that bathroom scene they released before the movie came really threw us off. it got people thinking that maybe chelsea wasn’t the villain after all or that she would end up being redeemed, and it probably would’ve turned out really good if that was the storyline. but sadly, it was just apart of chelsea’s scheme to claim the trident

    What I wanted to see:
    1. Chelsea as a more complex villian, like maybe she had her reasons to hate krakens b/c they destroyed her kingdom.
    2. Chelsea would’ve had sirens powers on land, like a “siren call” that made her popular and manipulated Ruby’s crush to love her and not Ruby.
    3. Ruby taking responsibility and be a queen or some leader of the ocean.
More evil minions mermaid in the final climax.

Thing is the social allegory in kids films with fantastical creatures or things "other than human" in a school setting or some other modern setting is just no longer a novelty anymore, and even the better ones of that genre like Zootopia or (to a lesser extent) The Bad Guys are flawed if we're meant to look at them as directly correlated to the social anxieties seen today - fine on their own as entertainment but apples and oranges if they're asking us to see it as some metaphor about racism. I feel the same way about Maus, really... Only something like Fox and the Hound which could be seen as vaguely topical or allegorical but still has a realistic outcome really seems to hit the nail on the head. I haven't seen it and probably won't but I find it so rich that cautiously optimistic fans of Dreamworks were told to shut up and "let Dreamworks cook" after Puss in Boots Last Wish cuz "I trust DW now and they know what they're doing" and THIS is the result lmao - where its only novelty is making a meta joke about white Ariel

    If Disney wrote it
    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ruby's mom was trying to protect her daughter from the dangers of the sea. Ruby has a panic attack when meeting Chelsea who immediately acknowledges she's a kraken. Ruby starts undergoing body changes she's not used too. Out of curiosity Ruby sneaks out one night and dives into the sea in hopes to know more about herself that her mom keeps hiding. She meets her grandma and the kraken population. The grandma is framed as a good guy to trick the audience. When really, she is actually manipulating everyone to think all mermaids are bad. She pressures Ruby into being queen because her daughter bailed out. After that she gets back on land but has to wait a bit to get back to her human form. So, she hides and tries to not make a scene how gigantic she is, but she gets caught and some profession fishermen are called to catch this "beast". She eventually gets back to her human form and goes back home to quickly get ready school. Her parents hear on the news about this. They know it was Ruby, she gets grounded from going anywhere outside of school and told there's no chance she can go to prom.
Ruby goes to school. The whole bathroom scene where Ruby vents out how she feels about not fitting in. Chelsea tells her it's cool to be kraken and convinces her to have a sea girl ditch day. They start to bond and learn about each other. At one point they get attacked by fishermen and Ruby helps save Chelsea who almost gets caught. Ruby is told the next time she sees her grandma that "mermaid are evil." To avoid getting in serious trouble of treason, Ruby hides her friendship with the mermaid. At some point she gets put under pressure and says some rude things about mermaids to seem less suspicious. Chelsea planning to surprise Ruby with a friendship gift, hides and hears this behind the corner. Chelsea turns on Ruby after misreading the situation thinking Ruby is just as bad as her grandma and was planning to trick her. Chelsea then thinks all Krakens are evil, and so she steals the trident, frees the other mermaids, and plans to come back an destroy the Kraken kingdom.
Ruby goes into hiding on land, and eventually her math partner finds her now in her human form upset. Embarrassed for him to find her like this, she tries to avoid eye contact with him and tells him she's sorry he is seeing her like this. He asked what's wrong, she explains what's happened but, in a way, that's still keeping her Kraken secret. He gives her some good advice that helps her realize what she needs to do and quickly runs off while telling him thank you.
Ruby quickly swims back to protect the kingdom by stopping mermaids and krakens from fighting. Ruby reveals and talks about the friendship she had with Chelsea and that they don't need to fight and apologizes for the things she said. Ruby then says somewhere similarly to the quote " People aren't born good or bad. Maybe they're born with tendencies either way, but it's the way you live your life that matters." Chelsea realizes Ruby isn't as bad as she thought she was. The grandma sees everyone is lowering their weapons down. The grandma still wants to destroy the mermaids and goes after Chelsea. Ruby gets in the way and is hurt instead. Chelsea uses the trident which takes the grandma's powers and giant kraken status away so now she's a regular kraken. The grandma seeing the angry crowd fleets in fear and then gets captured by fishermen. Chelsea sees Ruby dead freaks out and then tries to use her trident to revive her. It appears to not work she starts crying but then Ruby wakes up and is fine now. Ruby and Chelsea are friends again, Ruby explains a lot to her family what happened with the help of Chelsea. Ruby's mom allows her to go with her friend group to prom. Ruby gets to dance and kiss the boy she likes. Everyone is dancing to some catchy song and then there's the end credits with some goofy pictures. At the end it shows the miserable grandma in a small aquarium fish tank without privacy being watched by a massive crowd and pictures taken. The end.

Never expected this to be one of their best. Dreamworks never had an early-Pixar track record and it seems like Puss in Boots: The Last Wish made people forget that.
The movie just before it was The Bad Guys which I thought was pretty cute but nothing remarkable. The movie before that was The Boss Baby sequel (never watched it but well, no one was calling it incredible). Movie before that was The Croods sequel (I've heard it's okay. Maybe 6 or 7 out of 10) Trolls World Tour (again never watched.) Opinion seems to be it's about on par with the original, a little better or worse depending on who you ask. Before that Abominable (had to look that up, totally forgot this was DreamWorks) did literally anyone care about this one?? And before that HTTYD: The Hidden World. Which some love, some hate but either way it's generally considered the weakest of the trilogy.

Here is an alternate change that I think would have made the movie more interesting and better executed and don’t read if you haven’t watched the movie cause of spoilers
Have Chelsea and the Mermaid Queen Nerissa be separate characters and actually have them be mother and daughter
With the mother being the true antagonist who faked her death during the war planning her revenge
She pressures and manipulates Chelsea into following her orders and sees her as a tool that she would discard if she either loses her usefulness or defies her
Chelsea’s arc would have her manipulate Ruby at first by pretending to be her friend in order to get the trident only to actually like Ruby and have second thoughts about her mission and is completely guilt ridden when her mother claims the trident and reveals the truth to Ruby
Chelsea tries to explain only for Ruby to be completely consumed by anger and grief over being lied and manipulated by someone she thought was her friend and refuses to listen

And honestly, I still might go watch this movie, though probably not before Spider-Verse 2 if I’m given the choice. But that doesn’t mean I wouldn’t like Ruby Gillman! I may come away from the film slightly more happier than the average Joe! The most overlooked thing that I like about DW is that they don't have a formula or a target demographic in general, like Disney with their princess movies or pixar what if X thing had feelings, dreamworks has fairytales, parodies, superheroes movies, religious movies, musical jukebox with pre-existing musics, musical jukebox with original musics, a movie about art martials, a movie about shadows and a movie about monsters fighting against aliens and the list goes on. Also, disney is trying to be "family-friendly" while DW is trying to target every demographics as possible, like they make films that appeals more to babies, kids, famlies and mature audiences and I think what that causes them to get a lot of hate, because people expect something like The prince of egypt, HTTYD2 and TLW from them and think that shouldn't devalue them for this reason.

I mean, even Chelsea's fake persona *had its mean/slightly aggressive moments* . Hushing people, being assertive to the point of being a bit overbearing, struggling a little with empathy for others (but not totally), etc. Ie, she's a *flawed* character, which is great! Ruby Gillman is a good example of the "Flip the Premise" storytelling. And if you are going to ask "What's 'Flip The Premise?'" (Let's call it FTP for short), it's a writing technique where you take an existing story and flip it by making the hero into the villain and the villain into the hero. And then, you write a synopsis for your FTP story. And then, you strip your FTP story to the bare bone but keep the story's concept and make your own story out of it. FTP is what writers use when they have writer's block. It's the best technique IMO if you have writer's block.
And Ruby Gillman is an FTP story of "The Little Mermaid", obviously. Ruby is basically the good guy version of Ursula and Chelsea is the bad guy version of Arial. Other FTP stories like this includes Bright starring Will Smith, which is the FTP version of Lord of the Rings.

Oh surprise, exposition dump was actually a video that Ruby made to convince her folks to go to prom....except this video-making skill never comes again in the entire movie. Just a contrived exposition dump.
The plot was all over place. 1) she is kraken trying to hide among humans; 2) surprise! she's grows big in the water 3) she's royalty; 4) her mom lied to her; 5) she got super powers; 6) apparently, kraken's and mermaids don't like each other; 7) she makes friends with the new 'it' girl; 8) 'it' girl is a mermaid; 9) it girl is the daughter of the evil head mermaid; 10) no wait, she's actually the evil head mermaid (why was this needed?); 11) evil mermaid want a special trident that actually doesn't seem to be that special and tricks Ruby into getting it for her; 12) old guy is trying to show the world krakens are real on youtube/tiktoc but the plot needs the men in the family to thwart him just to give something do (they should have pulled a disney and killed one of the parents before the movie started).
Removing ANY of these plot points results in a more tightly focused movie.
On a side note, if you going to give the main character a gay best friend, why must they be turned up to 11 all the time?

I'm not sure that we half to say we need to have a bit of lower standards for this simply because it's more kid-oriented than family-oriented 🤔. Even if something is more younger-skewing it can still be of good quality.
Dreamworks films have always ranged from being for kids or for families, and I personally find in funny how at one point the internet would make fun of dreamworks films and some of their tropes for being lesser compared to pixar or disney. Now the tables have kind of turned either because people feel that pixar and disney have dipped in quality, or illumination has taken it's place lol.
Nevertheless, This film does look cute but not worthy of being seen on the big screen. The comparaisons to Luca are fitting as Dreamworks conviently still makes films that look a little similar to pixar or disney, and I agree that if everyone in the film has these spinless long-fingered designs than that doesn't help our main monster character stand-out as much 🤨.
Lastly, I wonder if the gay character you mentioned happens to be the black or colored chick as we apparently are still doing that trope of having a black or colored chick be the token lesbian. Although, I'll give credit that having a black or colored male be the handsom heartthrobe is a little rare in these kind of films. So there's that, although I wonder if him having dreads is suppose to make him resemble the Kraken females tenticles, idk 🤔.

I think this movie made a great job at the main character´s development but not so much with world-building, it´s very one-sided because it´s only told by Ruby`s grandma and she really doesn´t seem to be the most open-minded kraken in the Ocean there are even moments when she sounded kinda racist, I think DreamWorks was so focused on making fun of Disney´s Little Mermaid that they didn´t realize it was over the top and backfired because we only get to see one mermaid and they want us to believe just because "Chelsea" is evil then all mermaids are as well but in the end I kinda got the idea that in the bigger picture the mermaids are the actual victims of this situation because Ruby´s family can turn into giant and powerful krakens as they please but the mermaids needed that trident to transform into giant creatures as well to fight toe-to-toe (or fin-to-fin) with them but that trident was taken away and hidden from them for years so they were in a very vulnerable state and forced to hide all this time from the krakens, how would one little mermaids or even ten of them be any threat against a giant and powerful kraken like Ruby and her family? I was hoping for some twist like they would reveal that the reason Ruby´s mother Agatha chose to leave the Ocean and not be a warrior anymore was because she attacked innocent creatures because her mother told her too by saying they were "evil" and when she realized what she was doing she regret it deeply, but as you said it´s never really established why her mother and grandmother don´t get along it´s said that it was because her grandmother "kept controlling her life" but we never got to see what she made her do that she didn´t like

Yeah it’s funny that they didn’t think the message through. Ruby’s grandma is the ruler of the ocean and anyone who talks back is inferior and evil and instead of showing us that black pe- sorry, mermaids are also people, they justify her racism. Haha.

This just returns DreamWorks to the Status Quo with another movie like Trolls, Boss Baby, etc. I really miss the old DreamWorks where even if there wasn't a deep message or characters, there were at least clever and absurdist Jokes (Bee Movie) I would say Monsters vs Aliens but that one actually has a deeper in the background subject about Susan's Toxic relationship with Derek.

The movie feels like when people mix mnms and skittles together in one bowl.
    the pacing was terrible,
    the songs were okay.
The characters feel so one dimensional, its like they just created the characters, gave them a few things to make them different, and called it a day.
These characters have 1 personality trait.
I want to root for a character or absolutely adore one of them, i want to get to know more of their motivations

Ruby, Mario, Spiderverse2, Nimona on Netflix, Paramounts Transformers' cartoons; all are more ESG than anything Disney has nowadays. Ruby's gay high school couple wit rainbow ties? Sony's Spiderverse's trans flags all around and jst in case you didn't get it they spell out "protect trans kids" in big black letters. Mario's ball-busting Princess Peach that tells you in interviews she didn't accept the role until she made sure she is a "feminist boss". Paramount's transformers cartoons and gendered robots. Netflix's Nimona just released to praise by critics and audiences; a film which Disney dropped cause they thought it was too explicitly gay.
No matter what, ur giving ur money to the same people; more often than not even more woke people.. it's the entire industry.
