When Starships of the Galaxy came out for the Star Wars RPG, I spent weeks designing things like tenders, supply ships, patrol ships, fighter carriers, passenger liners and shuttles to round out the various fleet roles.
I wish we saw more utility ships to give some things more life, like on the Venators after a mission you'd see clone technicians and flight deck crew refueling and maintaining ships which just added life to the shows background scenes
The medical tug seems like an older model that was already in service by the start of the war while the Pelta seems like the newer vessel designed for the GAR navy.
Given that, on our world, basically every single nation with ocean access has its own maritime industry, but many corporations producing licensed things too, i imagine the two different designs to be either licensed productions or variants, maybe models of different years or production lots. One could also be a competition product from another manufacturer or the changes were necessary for regional reasons, be it technical, ideological or cultural. Same as it is with our worlds vehicles of literally any kind. And i would like to see more such "same but different looking" ships, given how many starship makers are in SW.
I can't be the only person who thought about Gary the Stormtrooper from Robot Chicken when the clones were trying to stop the transport. Come on Gary use the force!!!
I would guess that the larger one is simply a newer module updated with the rest of the fleet for the war, however they likely didn't immediately retire the old ones because they could still serve.
I wish we saw more interior shots of these, if it has bunks and a refresher, add a hyperdrive and a basic dorsal turret, you've got a great salvage freighter.
ships in starwars do have reverse thrust tho, not shown but they exist. If you want cannon proof watch the rogue one scene with the star destroyer being sliced using another pushed by a rebel ship (i forget the name, think it was smt like block smt)
In the wise words of captain Afyon: "Without a constant supply of barrels, you hotshots would have nothing to roll". Seriously, do they roll so much to get a view of the battlefield or something? Viewing battlefields is for bridge officers.
I would imagine if push comes to shove these things can be used for defense tractor beams were once used as weapons in the Star Wars galaxy and those powerful tractor beams could push entire ships into other ships or if there fighting one ship could just move around it and rip the entire thing into pieces with tractor beams pulling in several directions
What if multiple could used combined strength to throw debris from the battle like entire Engines at the Enemy force? Like a slug thrower but in space you have unlimited range with the law of Inertia
Actually in Legends the Squib species used their ships tractor beams in that way and managed to shrink down the tech to build a weapon known as a tensor rifle that fired with a loud bang.... And one in imperial officer remarked that one of the most amazing sights in the galaxy he ever saw was watching an ISD rip a rebel cruiser apart with just its tractor beams.
In TFU, there were scavengers on Raxus Prime that used tractor beams just like that, just on a smaller scale. They use arm-mounted tractor beams to rip apart scrap to salvage, or use it in self-defence by throwing junk at enemies, not unlike using the Force.
Is it just me, or does the design of these tugs seem to take a deliberate page from the design of Kushan salvage corvettes from Homeworld 1? they serve essentially the same function except the salvage corvettes seemed to override the target ships shield and engines to aid with the capture of enemy capital ships. Also come to think of it, the Pelta class seems like something the Kushan fleet would design as well.
Hey metanerdz dont know if you've done it but could you do a lore video of the eye thing that pops up in javas gate in Return of the jedi I always wondered what they were.
I love these kinds of things in Sci-Fi. Sure, it's cool to see the top-of-the-line warships and smuggler freighters and all that kind of stuff, but when you get to see things like this that are so mundane, it makes the setting feel so much larger.
I think there is two different models maybe more. It could be specifically for stations or just to be upgraded. The control center is different and reminds me of the ship Kenobi was using when Grievous boarded him on the clone wars episode. I also think T. is tractor beam it would make sense to me.
One question though: i get tugs in a fluid based transport system (the sea :) ), but in space ? Wouldn't a ship in space have more than enough thrust to maneuver ? And thrusters (like those that seem to be apparent in the take off scene from the millennium falcon) should be standard on any spaceship ?
Smaller ships wouldn't need tug assistance while large need such to safely dock to harbor (with some exceptions like ferries) - like IRL maritime transport
@@Jfk2Mr Why ? A ship has to be designed to accelerate and stop it's own mass otherwise it would be uncontrollable and an astrodroid would presumably be more than capable of handling any calculations for the docking maneuver. So with no other significant forces to fight when docking like in real life (i don't think you would have a spaceport near a black whole and let's say the spaceport is near a planet it would have to be in a geosynchronous orbit, so by definition gravity wouldn't be an issue). Plus we see star destroyers just float above cities in some of the EU stuff, so they don't seem to need tug assistance. I'm not trying to be picky here but in the SW universe were they have mastered hyper-drive and vertical takeoff of pretty much any size of ship i don't see the point of a tug. Except as a plot device :).
*The tugboat, for its size, is the most powerful starship around. And, the Tug-314s are the power behind the spaceports and hyperspace lanes that make up the Galactic Republic.* *This, is TUGS*
If I was in the Star Wars universe as a bounty hunter I know what ship I would be using to hunt my prey down I'd be using a modified version of this ship slap some weapons on it give it a hyperdrive
The Valor variant looks cool, but looks like another ship latched onto another ship. Still a better design. Someone, should make a lego Valor variant custom.
You remember that quote about Star Destroyers tearing ships asunder with just their tractor beams? It’d be kinda bada*s if we could see that in this ship
So, I've watched quite a few of your vids on ships, and you almost always include top speed. Is this top speed in atmospheric flight, simulated atmospheric flight (as ships in sw move more like planes than spacecraft a computer must compensate the control input in order to make them move as fluent, and the limits in vectoring of main engines and specific impulse of rcs thrusters will put a hard cap on speeds where this can be achieved) or are the physics bs? Different engines will have different acceleration, but as space has nothing to slow you down, there is no such thing as top speed except for the speed of light as long as you have fuel to burn.
You know. If you needed to just lightly push a droid ship another way. Maybe able to blindside it. Even this Tugboat could do it. Just have to be very crafty and be basically one with the Force. As it would be a suicide job. Yet if it works and you live. You have balls made out of Duriasteel. No, one can say other was.
"Save some love for the ships that keep the war machine moving"
May we have more unsung craft videos?
I agree! The sung heroes wouldn't be anywhere without the unsung heroes.
I couldn't agree more
All cogs within a machine need to work in order for it to operate smoothly.
You know this to be true

a jawa plus a porg wider than the X-Wing, this is why I subscribed
The metasystem is superior to all other measurement systems
But how many dewbacks could it hold?
An american measuring system in the star wars universe
The medical tug seems like an older model that was already in service by the start of the war while the Pelta seems like the newer vessel designed for the GAR navy.
Wish we could see more of the civilian lifestyle in Star Wars more often.

*maybe
Same
That's one of the reasons I love the mandalorian

The last time I was this early,Tarkin was still alive !
Last time I was this early, Qi Gon was still alive
The Sam nice one !
At they’re getting the recognition they deserve. :)
I agree with that
Wow! This ship really TUGS at my heart strings.
I can't be the only person who thought about Gary the Stormtrooper from Robot Chicken when the clones were trying to stop the transport. Come on Gary use the force!!!
The valor station tug has a really cool design. I wish more ships looked cool like that.
that utility tug type 2 was in that tie fighter animation! I had no idea what the heck that was!
Same here, I searched the internet for ages and now we know!
;
Never clicked off looking at country’s debt faster
The RA had a tug called the worthless fool which was modified to carry 18 passengers and equipped with multiple laser cannons.
That breakdown of the control panel is really clever, I was confused by it at first but your theory makes a lot of sense, good work!
I love their design. Very nice edges
I am amazed on how you translated the words on the control panel takes alot to find things like that thank you. 😁👍
Disney+ should make a comedy series about Space Tug Pilots. It could be pretty great.
I really love both cockpit designs. Great vid
Who thinks all three variants of the Imperial tugs and all two variants of the Republic tugs deserve a Lego set
the there imperial tug are from the old tie fight and xwing video games. i may have shot a few down.
@@tahhotep impressive
One of the coolest scavenger and control ships out there great vid meta.

Wow, very interesting, thanks for the video on these ships.
4:31 isn't this the one we see briefly on the Star Wars fan-made animation?
That's a great looking ship. Looks like the nostromo a little bit. Practical and utilitarian
The attention to detail is amazing in the show. I didn’t realize the actual control panel was designed out.
Please do a video about the T-6 shuttle.
Love the look of the two designs
Great video they have a cool design.

A Jawa and a Porg, lol! I love your ad-hoc measurements.
Tugs deserve hugs.
It is always good to have ships to slow down other faster ships.
Really making it all move.
Definitely need more info on the various tug ships, gives fan characters a back story.
In the wise words of captain Afyon: "Without a constant supply of barrels, you hotshots would have nothing to roll". Seriously, do they roll so much to get a view of the battlefield or something? Viewing battlefields is for bridge officers.
When your stuck in a RUT call an RIT!
Then what was that officer at Scarif referring to when he said "full reverse thrust"?
I would imagine if push comes to shove these things can be used for defense tractor beams were once used as weapons in the Star Wars galaxy and those powerful tractor beams could push entire ships into other ships or if there fighting one ship could just move around it and rip the entire thing into pieces with tractor beams pulling in several directions

Very good point, but then there would be the risk of overshooting and sending debris to any nearby planets and space lanes.
Actually in Legends the Squib species used their ships tractor beams in that way and managed to shrink down the tech to build a weapon known as a tensor rifle that fired with a loud bang....

"True hero of the Galaxy known as R2-D2."
That is so true, it ain't even funny.
Imagine if the rebels had these with cloaking capabilities they could push star destroyers around like at scariff
Let's not forget the clone pilots they deserve more recognition.
A tug boat is definitely useful
We need a metanerds comoendium of all his "only remember" endings
Different tugs suggest different manufacturers.
The true workhorses are far too often overlooked. I really like it when Star Wars technology is applied industrial purposes.
I'll try vortex, that's a cool trick!
Huh. Imagine one of these as a customized pirate ship. It could be a great salvager/boarder ship.
Another amazing video MetaNerdz Lore. Did the Galactic Empire use Tugboat and if so what were they?
Lmao I read that as Tupolev tu-314
If Rebels had a couple of these awesome ships during the Battle on Scarif, there would be no need to damage +3.000 years old museum item.
Possible hero ship?
The tugs that picked up R2 seem to be the longer tug variant
You should do a Video about the Gladiator-Class Star Destroyer
Clone wars produced so much awesome lore ♥♥♥.

starwars.wikia.com/wiki/TT-8L/Y7_gatekeeper_droid THESE! :D
Ah thank you. Still would like him to do a lore video on them
I love utility ships.
The shape reminds me of those APC's from Rogue squadron

I'd love to own and live in a modified tug if I lived in the Star Wars universe. Some mashup of the medical and republic types.
Anyone think that these could be use in piracy, think about being able to pull a star destroyer to exactly where you want it and then board it
But first, better somehow turn off his weapons, cuz it would wreck your face
And pull/immobilise that ship with own tractor beam battery

What about the reverse thrust?
ships have repulsor lifts. THey can move without their engines son if they are near other matter, so they could push away from space stations.
You forgot the Mere Tugs from Jedi Starfighter.
any real life comparisons such as thos one things at the panima canal to make sure ships dont hit the sides of the canal.
why does CT11 appear in that TIE Fighter animation?
I can't be the only one that thinks it looks like the Mule from Serenity, it is almost uncanny the similarities.

what happened to orn free taa after the clone wars?

He became a puppet delegate for the Empire and lived a life of fat luxury.
You that could be a great bounty hunter ship
Such boat can be easily militarise as a costal forces
I hope you make a new star wars species video
The newer design is so much nicer and in line with the era. The older one looks like it could be an old republic ship really.
Wanna do a video about the Legend’s Tugs?
Wouldn’t it have been more efficient to use tug droid ships ?
Milenium falcon is also tug.
And the smaller tug was made by Mandal motors
They wasted clones on tugboats?
Also some ships hast trust reverse.

It's annoying that everyone speaks English in the star wars universe, but they don't use english characters amongst the english speaking groups
