Majority of compton is working class / middle class residents. The danger element comes from the history of gangs. Not every part of compton in impovershed in fact maybe 10-12% of the whole city is an actual slum or below the poverty line. The reputation comes from the 80's and 90's where gang violence was at its worst and that time period compton gang violence was a notch above Los Angeles. Now it's the reverse but it's still dangerous in pockets and gang activity is still prevalent.
