Thanks to the creators of this animation for giving us creative inspiration! I go in more depth about the fundamentals of animation in my online courses: www.animatorguild.com/
French animators' works are best known for their greatness in quality, and animation at the same time thats crazily consistent and realistic- and there's alot of french animations that is pretty awesome to watch, take the Dofus movie, i highly recommend watching it 👀
The frame by frame for the disintegrating hand feels a lot like slow motion footage of ballistic gel impacts, especially that rippling and tearing. Few things come to mind that would also have that kind of viscosity of the ripples and the way it strings out like that when it breaks apart. I wouldn't be surprised if that's what the animator was referencing.
I was thinking maybe a slo-mo shot of a liquide filled ballon being popped (and maybe being blown upon at the same time; or just filmed sideways, but yeah, there's a lot of imagination and stylisation going on at the same time
I would guess that it is heavily referenced / maybe a little rotoscoped at times. They definitely performed many of the movements. i think it works really well for the style
Gobelins is great for reference because they covers a lot of art styles, themes and cultures in a quick format, you bound to find something even in their simplest animations. From a cat graphic designer running back and forth on an inneficient work pipeline, a Taiwanese child's first encounter with funeral ritual and the heavy feeling of loss, a Barbie doll stylized animation about a girl grappling with her OCD to help her sister, a magazine comic styled cartoon about a boy searching for his boot that accidentally got sold in a flea market, I could go on! No I won't share the titles of them because you will now have to search them one by one and find something you yourself fancy.
Love the title (Even though even now we're barely seeing the beginning of people taking animation as a whole seriously and not underestimating it and we inside the bubble of animation get a little lost when looking back at how far we've come which is a lot Don't get me wrong but we still have quite the mountain to climb)
To be honest, French Animation is one of the best. They have high design/Visual quality, high animation quality and most of all their story telling skills is at the highest. I always wished to see more than short. But their quality standard requires a lot of time and money, I believe that's why they go all in with students. They're very talented 🔥
Since this short was based on Mexican folklore, one can assume that the deity depicted in the monkey headdress is likely Xipe Totec, god of rebirth among many other things. So as macabre as it might seem, that "paper" texture you describe is likely the flayed skin worn by Xipe Totec in mythological descriptions 😅 Perhaps him blowing away the baby and what appears to be a xoloitzcuintle(a dog shepherd for humans in the afterlife) is Xipe Totec "breathing life" into them to facilitate the life, death and rebirth cycle. A theory that is further cemented in the following scene as the two subjects emerge from the mouth of what appears to be a corpse(possible symbology of returning from the underworld) Even in the credits still image, the colours shift from very unsaturated lifeless hues, to more saturated and lively colours. Another possible indication of life renewed
And it's just a trailer for the Annecy animation festival, check the shorts of each years, they are awesome ! If you liked it you will like the animation studio "remembers" ;)
I live very close next to the actual school, its fun not only because of the name, which is amazing, but also I know all this is happening behind them walls
Often it feels like America + Japan are acknowledged as animation industries, and the european industry doesn't get the same kind of recognition, despite them training many of the best artists in the world.

Can't imagine anyone underestimating French Animation. Especially anything from Gobelins ❤
Some of the movement is so realistic you wonder if its rotoscoped at times.

I watched this particular short a few months ago, and all I could think of was how beautiful this 45 second short was
As someone who is now studying in the hopes of going to gobelins next year, I am glad this video exists.
You've been busy :) Enjoying these recent uploads.
Love the title

I was literally blown away when you revealed that this was a funeral

It is good to have you back howard, would there be an animator guild contest next year
Thank you!
No plans yet to host another contest as i don't have time in my schedule right now
Truly amazing
The fluid dynamics reminded me of 'Vampire hunter D'
the first scene reminds me of that old sleep paralysis painting
can u pls breakdown Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 Episode 17?
No one underestimate french animation, they're more tend to arthouse not commercial

Spirit/soul guide for the dead = psychopomp
This is stunning, but where can I find the animation itself?
ua-cam.com/video/Dwc_WERFdX0/v-deo.html
Which animation app is best for 2d animatios?
Personally I like TVPaint, and that is also what these animators used.
My recommendation, eat cheese.
