Hi Pazi, your videos are awesome. I have the same camshafts that you have, I’ve already modified them to fit my M50. But I’m a little confuse about the timing. I have 2 doubts to see if you can solve them for me, 1st, what do you mean by the letters TDC? and 2nd, is the opening on the valve 0.1mm, which is 1 tenth or 1mm? I read comments and did not understand it very well. I am from Spain and I am doing it on a m50b25 nv engine the stroker, is this setting of valve opening also valid for m50b25 nv? thanks in advance.

Hi, when timing the m50nv cam, are the lifters full of oil, and does that make a difference to how much the valves at cyl 6 open ? Also, do you place the dial guage needle directly on the lifter, measuring 1mm (meaning the valves have moved 1mm also)? Would be very happy if you could help me, big fan of yours and keep up the good work !
Lifters have spring inside, so you don't need to care how much oil is in them. They should be closing the cap just fine in non-running engine no matter what, so you can measure from lifter.

You need to take 2mm off the sprocket mounting surface. And you MAY need to grind little bit off from the cam tray between lifters. Depending how castings match. And that 1mm open at tdc is good starting point for exhaust cam timing.
@@pazi88 hey Pazi, I just wanted you to know that you indeed need to grind some material away of the m50 cam tray to fit the m54b30 cam. It is not that much, maybe about 1mm of hight between the lifters. Thank you again for your knowledge
Hey Pazi I have a question about cam timing. I have an m50tu with an m54b30 intake cam fitted to it and stock exhaust cam. I've been in the turbo game for a while now and it seems like every m50 nin vanos I've had in my car i have a distinct rattle at 3000 rpm it sounds like a timing chain rattle. I use the .140 thickness head gasket, new timing chain guides and all new upper and lower tensioner. Can I get your advice please. This sound is driving me crazy
Normally m50 vanos looks like this: www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/showparts?id=CB31-EUR-01-1994-E36-BMW-325i&diagId=11_1541 But after 3/95 they upgraded vanos with spring washer, and it looks like this: www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/showparts?id=CD11-EUR-07-1997-E36-BMW-328i&diagId=11_6060 So upgrading parts 9,10,11 and bolts 6 from newer m52 vanos, the rattle has gone away in my engines.
It's almost stock m52 wiring. Some wires has been rerouted to fit e30 and I have separated the dash coolant sensor wire from m52 coolant sensor and fitted e30 sensor to get the stock temp gauge to work. Everything works like stock except fuel consumption gauge. That might work with stock m52 dme but I'm running megasquirt.
e-vac works well. Maybe little bit of oil smell behind the car. but that's not my problem because only cars behind me will smell that :D Stock separator/cranck ventilation system is removed and the port for that in intake manifold is blocked off. The m50 e34 dipstick tube doesn't have the oil return line for crank ventilation. But with m52 dipstick I would have just blocked off that.
Hi can you tell me what power your car is ?I am building an aluminium block m52 turbo with 3.0 inlet cam forged rods 9:0.1 compression and a gt4094r turbo hoping for 600hp !
Hi! My car has 500hp. The 600hp might be bit too much for aluminium block. Because you need to use stock bolts with alu block and stock bolts can't handle more than 1.5 bar of boost. And with that compression ratio, you will need more than 1.5 bar of boost to get that 600hp.
I will need 1.5 bar to do 600 ! My tuner says 9:0.1 will be fine and he tunes a m50 single vanos motor with same cam and m54b30 crank rods and pistons and did 261hp so 240hp should be possible on a 2.8 which will do 600 at 1.5 bar . Them numbers are on a new super flow dyno not dynojet or a hub dyno

No I didn't change that. The engine works fine with that timing also. It just means less overlap which causes more low end torque with losing some of the top end power.
Steven Pal Yeah but only in top end. m52 intake manifold gives me lor more low end torque. And in turbo engine I can have as much top end power as I wan't just adding boost.
i knew it..... !! the people in finnland are crasy. 1,4 bar on stock m50 rods? and stock comp? hope you have a good map .. ohh i forgot .. you map it yourselfe :S hehe nice videos . thanks for making
The oil viscosity and engine power are not related to each other. The required oil viscosity comes from the engine internal clearances. And those are at OEM specs so OEM spec oil is needed. Even high hp modern GTR engine uses 0W-40 or 10W-40 oil. This engine of mine has 500 hp.
That was my mistake, I thought the oil was 40W-XX, cause saw only 40 on oil canister...And realized there is not so thick motor oil at all after googled lol. Anyway, super great videos, hope you do a lot more on other aspects too like bodywork!

+eimantas28 Should hold as long as needed if there isn't problems in the engine (serious misfires etc.). At least mine and the ONE have worked in daily use without problems. Also I know one boosted almost stock m50 engine in Finland that has worked for more than 40 000km. Mine has now worked about 6000km with zero problems.

18:36 You made an error, you skipped a tooth when moving the vanos onto the spline, I've done this accidentally before and it messes your timing badly.
Usually the cam/vanos gear doesn't line up correctly, so you need to rotate the sprockets quite a bit to get the teeth to line up. And even if you skip a tooth, it doesn't affect the base timing at all. The cams are still degreed as they should. It only can limit vanos travel amount that stock ecu at least throws errors.

How many digrees should i degree the exhaust camshaft on this setup and from what position to make timing?
It's 1mm open at TDC
Witch wiring do u use for m52 swap and does everything work(dash gauges), or e30 wiring is ok with few tweaks
It's almost stock m52 wiring. Some wires has been rerouted to fit e30 and I have separated the dash coolant sensor wire from m52 coolant sensor and fitted e30 sensor to get the stock temp gauge to work. Everything works like stock except fuel consumption gauge. That might work with stock m52 dme but I'm running megasquirt.
hey, how turn out your e-vac crankcase ventilation ? what did you did to dipstick tube for crank case vent? just blocked off?
e-vac works well.
OK got it!
I have a little bit a problem with smoking, when engine is warmup, while idling smoke: white/ blue smoke coming out.
is there a way to be sure that the fire rings haven't moved when installing the head?
You will quite clearly notice that the head will not sit on the block like it should.
Where do you get that double banjo for oil feed for turbo ? thank you :-)
I got it from local hydraulic shop. But if you google double banjo bolt, you find those available at lots of places.
why you oil the bolts before installing them in the block , oily bolts need more torque than dry bolts torque ?
The oil is required to get the required stretch for the bolt. It's said in BMW factory repair manual also.
where can i get BMW manuals ?
Download BMW TIS or use this: translate.google.ca/translate?hl=en&sl=ru&u=tis.bmwcats.com/&prev=/search%3Fq%3Donline%2Bbmw%2Btis%26hl%3Den%26client%3Dfirefox-a%26hs%3DbQ6%26tbo%3Dd%26rls%3Dorg.mozilla:en-US:official%26channel%3Dnp&sa=X&ei=EN7hUMDzEOqY2wXU04DABg&ved=0CFYQ7gEwAw
Thanks mate that helped a lot ! :)
Hello. @ 14:56 - 1mm open or 0.1mm?
Should be 1 mm but I accidentally put that to 0,1 mm :D
So, You did not change as You wanted and it works nice? I just put a REAL 1mm and thinking, maybe some compromise ~ 0.5?
And what You used to hold magnet well on engine? On what dod You put it?
No I didn't change that. The engine works fine with that timing also. It just means less overlap which causes more low end torque with losing some of the top end power.
I have steel plate bolted onto valve cover stud.
why not use an m50 intake manifold it flows better than the m52s at least on n/a
Steven Pal Yeah but only in top end. m52 intake manifold gives me lor more low end torque. And in turbo engine I can have as much top end power as I wan't just adding boost.
@@pazi88 kiitos 👍
What's the compression ratio of your motor? 9:1? 9.5:1?
Stock 10.2:1.
i knew it..... !! the people in finnland are crasy. 1,4 bar on stock m50 rods? and stock comp? hope you have a good map .. ohh i forgot .. you map it yourselfe :S hehe nice videos . thanks for making
Mistä noita moottorin momentteja löytää? äkillisellä goolettamisella ei löytyny ku tästä videolta :D
NewTIS:ssä ne on helposti saatavilla netissä. Tarviit vaan kutsun sähköpostiin sinne.
Why do you use W-40 oil in such a powerful engine ?(How much power btw?)
5W40? NOT TO LIGHT THE OIL ?
Not sure what you mean. 5w40 is fine for these engines.
aha , oki thanks :d
10w60
Osaatko sanoa paljon pitäisi ajoittaa m50b25 nv vapari jossa jyrkempi pakonokka vai tarvitseeko ollenkaan?
Riippuu paljolti millanen nokka sulla on.
mittailen tossa viikoloppuna varmaan olikoha nyt joku 1mm korkeempi, mut sitten mietin semmosta ku mulla oli toi kansi halki ja myynnissä olisi m52 kansi nii passaako se toho m50? et onks sisuskalut sit paljon erillaisia
Also why you haven't used M50B25 intake manifold?
It gives more low end torque off boost. The top end power is easy to get with high boost but I like the engine to work in low rpm also.
What about stock head bolts? They can handle such power?
+eimantas28 Yes they can. I have seen them give up somewhere in 1.5 Bar boost levels. So 1 Bar that I'm using is quite safe.
For how long? is that kind of vehicle can be daily drive? With 1bar boost or little lower
What kind of fire rings do you use?
The ones that come with the athena headgasket.
Thank You)
u running hall sensor on the m52b28 turbo?
Yeah the stock hall sensor.
+pazi88 so the ms box is build for hall? thinking about getting VEMS ecu on mine m52b28 but not sure if i should choose vr or hall sensor?
+Mg Mg If you have good hall sensor from m52 use that. If you don't, buy the cherry hall sensor. There is also adapters for m5x engines for that
M50b25 nv
0.6 intake
18:36 You made an error, you skipped a tooth when moving the vanos onto the spline, I've done this accidentally before and it messes your timing badly.
Usually the cam/vanos gear doesn't line up correctly, so you need to rotate the sprockets quite a bit to get the teeth to line up. And even if you skip a tooth, it doesn't affect the base timing at all. The cams are still degreed as they should. It only can limit vanos travel amount that stock ecu at least throws errors.
@@pazi88 appreciate the insight
What turbo is that?
Charlie Priestman holset hx35
why m52 intake on this engine
It gives more low end torque off boost. The top end power is easy to get with high boost but I like the engine to work in low rpm also.
+pazi88 but He have on the dyno Video m50 intake or Not with 490hp
+hythekiller It's with m52 intake. The dyno video is filmed right after this video. I just put these on UA-cam bit strange order because I didn't had time to edit these.
+pazi88 Okey thanks how much Boost on this Video?
I have the Same enige m50b32tü with 330hp on the crank non turbo non supercharger with itb and another Mods...
but i drive with old Bosch dme 3.31
+hythekiller I'm currently driving with 1 Bar boost. I tried rising it but the engine went Lean after that. My fuel pump maybe at it's limit.
Paljon on tehotavoite?
