- I've finally decided to perform an MS43 DME/ECU swap into my MS42 E46. I include pinouts and color codes that I've made up for you within this video. Please, Enjoy. To completely understand the conversion and how simple it can be, I urge you to watch the full video.
*I am not liable if you damage your car or run into complications while performing the methods depicted within this video.
I think you have smaal problem with cluster function splice direct image, Pin 13 goes to pin 2 and pin pin12 goes to pin 1 or im wrong?
The pinouts I made are correct. If you are basing your information from the MS4x Wiki MS42 Pinout, it is wrong. I attempted making this aware to some people, yet no one has fixed it. Rest assured, my pinout is correct. They have pins 1 and 2 backwards for X60004 on MS4x Wiki.
@@OLearysBMW Very good i make them based on your pinout, but i just check again and see that, thanks again which mean when i start everything will be correct.
@@redlineperformancebalkan You're very welcome, I was also confused when I looked at MS4x Wiki. Your car's cluster will function normal 👍

Hello man, thanks for the video, very well explained, I just do all the swap, and I can’t start the car I flash the ecu, is cranking, has power in the injectors, but doesn’t start… the pump it’s not active maybe my EWS it’s cutting the pump? Can you help me with that?
Hello again! i did the flash and the car works perfect! YOU ARE A GENIUS! THANKS MEN..
Love your workshop, plenty of space,a dream of mine for years ,to retire, in such working Comfort as you have ,would love to know what the make of your Camera / video equipment is ,Absolutely superb quality
Hello, this video was made with nothing fancy. Was shot on my old phone, then edited on laptop. My newer videos are actually much better quality. Thank You for watching.
Just a wealth of knowledge in this video! Man I really love your bmw content. You really break it down into detail, what most Bmw enthusiasts need .
Thank You for the appreciation, means a lot.
Hi. BMW E39 530i. I did a post cat sensors delete, setting c_conf_cat to 1 and used tuner pro.
I upgraded firmware from MS430037 to MS430069. Everything went fine but I don't have engine light when ignition is on. What I did wrong? Thanks
UPDATE;
I have performed this swap three times now with the same methods that I've depicted within this video. It infact works flawlessly.
if you want to help me get my e46 running best u can thatd be sick.. im down for full standalone i did a manual swap but have a gear on the car and the gas pedal wont do anything... idk how to do the wiring or anything i j dont know... it was a 500$ coupe that i swapped with a e36 coupe 4cyl trans it fit right up and then rolled the backwheels till i hit 10mph then the throttle quit.. idk how to make it be ok with the manual lol.. ive tried a bunch of stuff idk how the e36 clutch pedal is much different. idk i need somebody lol
Just did the swap & works mint! First start up and no hiccups. Everything is perfect. Great video
Did u have to tune it to get it started?
@@Problematicars you need to flash ecu with ews delete tune
I've done this swap with your help, thanks for that, but im having a little problem, my ms43 has ews, o2 sensors deleted, i throw away all wiring from x60002, and then i checked that pin 12 and pin 23 on x60002 is for ecu main relay.. so i think if there no wires to these pins my car wont start?:D or i messed up somewhere else, honestly i spent about 60 hours or more just trying to diagnose every bit, but something is not right, relay dont wanna activate the fuel pump if i short it with wire it works, all fuse relays ar good.. seems that i dont have spark as well, altough there is voltage to coils and signal, just somewhy i cant check the ground for coils i thinks its because of resistor inside, any thoughts would be helpfull.
when is part #2 coming?
I apologize for no follow-up. However, after doing this conversion multiple times now, it works flawlessly.
Really cool stuff Tyler, thanks for going through all of this stuff for us. I'm watching it because I like these type of videos, but I do want do keep my MS42, I really wanted a throttle cable when I bought my 323Ci :)
Thank You for your kind words, you're welcome! I prefer the feel of the throttle cable as well, but to use my particular throttle body, I had to do the MS43 swap.
M52TU is not drive by cable. It is drive by wire. The throttle cable actuates a potentiometer on the throttle body itself.
@@cheyennegrahamoneill9330 We (obviously Tyler) know that, it's just a matter of wording. The intention is what matters which is that there's a cable involved.
Whats an MS42 and MS43?
It would be nice to let everyone know at the beginning of the video.
I know my engine on my 01 330i is a M54 and a M44 in my 97 Z3.
I never heard of MS.
People who search this topic know what this video is about. Has nothing to do with engine. MS42 and MS43 are DME(ECU) versions.
If I swap the whole harness for the m54 harness, is the going to be a straight swap or do I have to de-pin and re-pin some cables?
Please, for the sake of simplicity use your original MS42 harness as I have. I've done this swap 3 times now. Your MS42 harness will work for M54. You will have issues and annoyances if you use MS43 harness on a MS42 body car. I made this process as simple as possible.
Hey man thank you for going into detail I was just curious if I were swap a different engine with the engine harness and the dme would everything plug and play or would I still have to splice those wires to get those sensors to work.I know if I switch dme’s I’ll have to code in the new dme to the vin but my plan is to swap over a 03 330ci engine in my 2000 323it wagon and I was just curious on what my approach should be.
This MS43 swap method is to be used for engine swaps. You can directly swap a B30 into your 323 with my wiring pinouts. I've done this method twice, works great. You don't really have to VIN pair the DME, can just disable EWS. Unless you want it to work. Regardless, use MS42 engine harness. Even on M54 engines.
@@OLearysBMW yeah your right I didn’t think of it like that thank you man I appreciate the second opinion
Thanks planning to do this conversion 👍
Thank you for the detailed info. Did you made the part two then?
Thank you again
I've done this conversion three times now with the exact methods I've shared. Works great 👍
Hey man, currently upgrading from MS42 to MS43 for the M52B28TU that I have swapped in to my E36. I am using race mode's adapter kit and have a small problem. On my loom adapter to get the M52B28TU to work in my E36. In plug X6004 there were no connectors to remove in pins 2 and 21. So I cannot connect the wire from pin 39 to 21 and pin 12 to pin 2 I am not sure why as this loom always worked perfectly. Just wondering if you know if these will be a problem to have disconnected or can I just blank them off as they may not be used for the E36 clocks or something?
I'm confused. You make it sound as if your E36 has MS42 from factory.
@@OLearysBMW no the car was originally a 320i that ran on MS41. Then when I swapped the B28TU in it was converted to MS42. I am now converting to MS43. After looking at a few diagrams I've found that one of the connectors is for engine start signal feedback which I'm pretty sure won't be needed in my case.
I put the m50 manifold on my e46 and the stupid cable throttle body was giving me issues so I did this ms43 swap and it worked great! Thank you for such an in depth tutorial!
Really great tutorials exactly what I needed currently in the middle of a MS42 to MS43 swap thank you so much
You're welcome!
Hey, thank you so much for this. It may have already been addressed in comments, but do you have the color code mapped to DBW pin out of throttle body cable? I bought a new throttle body connector where all the wires are white. I want to splice into the ms42 throttle cable, but the chart that you have listed assumes I have the connector to throttle body with oem cable colors. Thank you for your help.
Hi i know it is over one year old,but we are going to swap an m52 2,0 engine with a m54 3.0liters.in an E46 from 99,we have the new engine with ms 43 harness, but this wonderful video is showing how to make the changes in the ms 42 harness, what is best solution keep the old harness or use the new
I did the whole swap off the video, I never watched to the end part about flashing the dme, I thought she was ready to go it will crank with the ms42 but I have no throttle, who near Atlanta can I get to do that?
The throttle body will not open until engine is running, it's a safety. Get the EWS deleted from DME and you'll be good to go.
@OLearysBMW right that's what I was asking, where can I get that done that doesn't cost an arm and a leg? I have 4 dmes I would trade for a tuned one
My ecu is a from a 325i e46 2004
I swaped a 525 2004 my car is misfiring what can a do please help it keeps pop my fuse #2 from the relay fuse box next to ecu my ecu is ms45 can you please help 🙏 please

@kristiansomogyi744 Not in my car particularly, as I don't have those things. The two other cars that I've done the swap to, yes. All systems function normal.
How come u didn’t need to change the ews and key with dme
That's not necessary if you code out EWS.. which is what's most common.

Are you using MS43 engine harness?
@@OLearysBMW yes I am using it
@@kirkyrecardo3965 That's why. Reusing your MS42 engine harness, much easier. That's what this video shows.
@@OLearysBMW ok can you show how to get it done . Have some trouble for over 6 months now
@@kirkyrecardo3965 use your MS42 harness if you have it
Is it easier to sawp the whole harness im doing a manual sawp at the same time and it a manual harness i just dont want to tear the interior apart to do it
Transmission type does not deal with engine harness. If you're MS43 swapping you have to swap the accelerator pedal either way. As I said towards the beginning of the video, using the MS43 harness is not easier. More complication.
Also if you're manual swapping, you'll be installing the pedal assembly and what not.. so the interior is somewhat coming apart either way.
Hello! I just did the swap with Race-Mode setup and supplied MS43. I'm super happy with it. Just a sidebar ECU question; if I wanted to run a digital tach in my dash, can I just run a wire directly from X6004 Pin 17 to the tach? Would that do it? My install is in a radically custom Land Rover Defender roadster and am not using the BMW cluster at all. I use an OBD2 digital display but would like to have a real tach gauge. Many thanks!!!
Hello! I have no clue honestly. And yep, my method shown here is the exact thing racemode does, just without the fancy $ harnesses. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful to you!
👍
Thank a million ! Wish u luck with all of your projects 🙏🏾
Very informative video. I have recently bought a 2000 z3 with a m52tub20 but the previous owner had swapped an m54b30. The car goes to limp mode if driven hard and I'm guessing it has something to do with running the m54b30 on ms42 instead of ms43. Is the process similar between the z3 and e46?
Any guidance is highly appreciated
Same DME versions, same wiring. Just different DME locations. Running an B30 on MS42 should have zero issue if everything is working/tuned properly.
Thanks for a great detailed video...
Have you done or could you do a video to splice in and obd2 port correctly for read/writing to the DME in the car please
Never had issues with reading/writing with the OBD port(s). Some MS42 cars have two ports, all MS43/MS45 use one. Even after MS43 swapping, the in-cabin MS42 port has worked fine for me.
Thanks a lot man, you made the wiring so easy. My tb died so I ended up upgrading to ms43. Runs better now pedal felt strange at the beginning compared to the cable one.
It's definitely a big difference in feel, lol. But I thoroughly enjoy the more crisp throttle of MS43/MS45.
This is awesome!. Just what i needed. You're a life saver. The detailed instructions were perfect and you covered everything. If I had been more patient, I wouldn't have broken the plastic bracket for the throttle peddle. I thought you forgot about it so I just attacked it myself. Then came back in to watch some more of the video and that was the next thing you addressed. Gotta work on my patience. lol. Wouldn't happen to have a color coded splice for a white 3d immo harness to a black 2 harness, would you? I've been working on it but it's making my head hurt. and does Vlad have tuning videos I can check out? Looking forward to more videos from you. Thanks so much :)
Hello, yes I made this video very user friendly, so it's explained in full detail for anyone. We people with experience would find it daunting to sit through most, lol. So I totally understand. As far as the wiring you're describing, I'm not certain of what you're meaning.
awesome swap man....very very nice. Will try to apply the same concepts to e39. Very nice!!!
Genuine question. I have a m54 already so Yh ms43. Am I able to swap in a m52tub28 engine (just the block) and have the manifold, throttle body from the m54b30 onto the engine ? Would that be ok ?
Yes. You can use the engine from an m52tu to ms43 and viceversa. As long as You have also the cable harness and the devices (throtle body) it works
Hello. Great work but i have a question. Why you didnt use full engine wiring from ms43/m54 from e46? Is there any specific reason? Thanks for answer.
More complicated, works only with more extensive wiring. This method I've shown here is much much more simpler.
MS43 cars changed their body harness, which adds an extra plug to MS43 engine harness. Deciphering that takes much longer than simply modifying the MS42 engine harness, with 4 simple splices.
@@OLearysBMW Thanks, im gathering info for swap from lift e46 n46 engine to m52tu but using wiring from m54 end coupe of m54 parts like throttle body etc. I found info that dsc will not work when using m52 ecu in lift e46.
Thank you so much for this video! You have been an absolute life saver in a swap that I “thought would be a simple motor in and out” deal.
Not a problem! For future reference, you can also source a throttle body adapter. Then simply flash the MS42 for proper engine type/displacement. Going to MS43 though, I love it. Much crisper throttle response being one benefit.
Whose your tuner I need the email
Those connectors you made, the one for the throttle body, you basically cut the connector near the throttle body and then at the ecu and spliced wire in between to add the length?
I myself extracted the entire harness.. but yes it's fine to snip and add wire length. Easier to just dissect an MS43/MS45 harness though.
Did a m54b30 swap on to a ms42 body . No fuel injector spray , reppaced everybting fuses relays , deffiernt pin out or smth else?
You used the harness that came with the M54, didn't you.
Yes @@OLearysBMW
I'm willing to repin it
@@megumineatssand That's why. Use the MS42 engine harness.. I made this video for people who engine swap, like yourself. It's a headache to use MS43 engine harness on MS42 body cars

I'm not sure of the exact size, I bought a small assortment and it happened to be the smallest size I had. 5 point security torx.
BTW GREAT VIDEO, I have a question so I am currently swapping a m54 engine to a m52 car/ecu is there any way I can keep the cable throttle, also a throttle body question is there a way we can pm
You can purchase a throttle body adapter from Bimmer Tune. No need to MS43 swap if you do that.

You're welcome! After seeing lots of people having problems with the conversion I decided to do my digging and find perhaps the easiest DIY solution. Let me know how yours turns out.
I did the ms43 swap this weekend on my 1999 328i but for some reason it won't rev above 1500 rpm. I used a 2000 330i as the donor car. The codes I'm getting are p0122, p0222, p1632, and p2401. Do you know what it could be? I even went back to pick n pull to swap the pedal and throttle body again but it was the same result. Thank you for the informative video!
Sometimes you have to reset throttle adaptations following this swap, that may aid you. Do you have an EML light displayed?
hey how did the swap go what eco did you use, currently swapping a 2004 330 engine into 2000 323ci and boosting it
It actually turned out I had 2 wires switched around 🤣 Fixed that and it works great now!

Thanks man this was just the info I needed to complete my ms42 to ms43 swap
I have trouble with electric diagrams and your video was just perfect for me to understand without getting it mixed up i also made the pedal and throttle wiring looms like you did while getting them from a donor car .
Just another question related to does your e46 in the video have the obd2 port in use or the old style obd1 under the hood ? My convertible 323ci from 05/2000 has the old style (e36) obd1 under the hood which you need to make a read out and 1 obd2 in the car by the hoodlatch but doesn't work when you try to make a read out would it make a difference ? Just trying to copy as much as possible .
Bro what a channel, amazing. in 31:18, at throttle pedal pins, im swaping pins to same position at new connector, so i mean, pin7 going to pin7, pin 10 to pin10 at new connector, and pin 15 to pin 15, etc to all pins? position(number of pin) at connector does not change?
They don't change, no. They came from an MS43 car. You're installing an MS43 DME. Directly swap pins, one by one.
Does this work for e46 auto transmission? I'm from Brazil and I have an e46 ms42 auto and I would like to change to ms43 could you help me with this I have the dme ms43 the throttle body just missing the accelerator pedal, do you have an email to make it easier to communicate?
Amazing vid, What software u running?

Hey man, not sure if you’d be able to help me out but I just finished up wiring an ms43 swap exactly as shown in this video. I used the m52tu engine harness and spliced in the throttle body plug at the plug. The car will run and idle but I’m getting no power to the throttle body. Idle will raise to about 2k rpm due to the icv so I believe I’m getting power to the pedal itself but no movement in the throttle body at all. I’ve tripled checked all my connections and still nothing. Any help would be appreciated!
Hey there. Okay, so if there is indeed communication between the pedal and throttle body/ICV, hop in the car, put key to position 2. Then rapidly tap the throttle pedal, you should hear the ICV clacking.
If the ICV is making no noise when rapidly hitting the throttle pedal, I'd assume a communication issue between the throttle pedal and TB.
Also, have you reset adaptations? EML light illuminated? Does the throttle body come from the same car/displacement that your MS43 came from?
Also, as per safety, the TB does not operate unless the engine is running. So you'll have no response with just the key on. It won't open. Just a little fyi
