  • 🗳️ Will it be Rishi Sunak or Keir Starmer? Speaking back in September, Rory Stewart was asked by a member of our audience who he would vote for in a snap election and discussed the biggest challenge Keir Starmer faces to defeat the Conseratives.
Rory also revealed whether he would return to politics in the future, reflected on his own race to become the Mayor of London and the major overhaul he believes our political system desperately needs.
An Evening with Rory Stewart hosted by Tom Holland was originally broadcast on Mon 4 Sep, live from the Barbican Centre, London.

I am voting Labour too. You just need to look at the record of the Conservatives and their lack of morals to know you need to stop them.

"Who here knows what Starmer's economic policy is?" How about you also ask "What is Sunak's economic policy What was Johnson's? Or May's?" I'm confident that no-one would have a clear answer to that, either, because the public don't typically engage that deep. But Rory will only ask about Labour because of the lie that has been propagated that the Tories are "safe with the economy". That simply isn't true, as we can see

Labour's economic policies: bringing back economic security by every policy fully being costed, not raise income tax or national insurance (but also not cut them, we can't afford it), reform of trade union/workers rights and planning laws for a fair deal and to promote productivity and growth, raise other taxes on those most able to pay (more windfall on oil/gas, VAT on private schools etc.), publicly owned energy production that will provide the Exchequer funds...
If you don;t know all or some of these you've not been listening. Admittedly this interview was almost a year ago when some of these policies weren't as fleshed out, but the direction was definitely clear. By this point the Rachel Reeves had already made her big speech on "Securonomics".

As the Tory Party is going towards some form of Proto Fascism I don't know how anyone can think of voting Tory unless they are of the fascist leaning stamp. Keir has proven his competence his ability to learn from experts & become expert throughout his life. If you cannot trust Keir there is nobody you can trust. On the Tory proposal of National Service. At 82 I was overjoyed to miss Conscription as my many friends, acquaintances and hundreds of workmates on the railways where I was a fireman. With one exception but against him two young men I knew had gone on the Lam to avoid conscription. The US military said a year or more ago the UK Armed forces are no longer a serious force. So that was under the Tories. Labour put 2.5% into our armed forces the Tories 2% or less. This is what the Tories are trying to cover up.

I think it will be interesting to see what Labour actually do on taxes and public spending because we need higher taxes on ordinary folk to seriously pay for major public spending increases. If Labour do that then middle aged folk paying ever higher taxes to pay for old people might get pushed towards the Tories again but if they don't do that then the left might cause more and more trouble.

Plenty of materials and talks online to research the Labour positions.
Labour generally is for a fairer society, helping the disadvantaged. They will get rid of the Rwanda policy and be more compassionate. That is reason enough.
Regarding the economy - Rachel Reeves is competent and prudent & will not waste public money. All the Tories want to do is cut essential services and hand tax cuts to the rich.

I do agree we now need a PR voting system in the UK, alongside abolition of the House of Lords.I,similarly, agreed with the FPTP voting system for many years but our political system is so broken now that the only way we will get engagement with the electorate in our democratic system is through reform of the system imho. Many voters are totally disillusioned with politicians and politics in general.I might be wrong, but the test will be what the turnout is for the upcoming election.I think the turnout for those eligible to vote will be around 60% -70%.

You give '60-70% turnout' as though it's a sage prediction - the UK has had 60-69% turnout in every general election for the last 25 years. In the last century, it was always mid-70s.

Compulsory voting is the only way we have a 96 percent turnout what also happens is your population becomes politicised and we vote along party lines not popularity contests between the party leaders we also make sure that everyone knows what each parties platforms are then they can say they have a mandate
