I take a look at the evolution of Horace Horsecollar and Clarabelle Cow (Orazio Cavezza e Clarabella Mucca / Karel Paardepoot en Clarabella Koe), Disney's original side characters and the original best friends of Mickey Mouse (Topolino) and Minnie.
We follows them right from their first appearances as plow horse and dairy cow in 1928 and 1929, through their modern appearances.

Ok, video's only been up an hour and already people are asking about this - so let me clear the air.
A couple of days ago - before I'd started proper work on this video - I put out a poll asking whether people wanted this as one video or two seperate videos for each character. 2/3 voted for 'seperate'. After researching and writing this piece as two seperates... I instead decided upon a combined video. Here's why:
Polls aren't always going to be the be all and end all - they're not to decide a 'public vote', but to give me a good idea of what the audience is thinking. They help me gauge audience interest and help me learn about viewing patterns and behaviours.
But at the end of the day - as the creator, it's simply my job to take that information on board and then make the best decision for the particular video and story I am trying to tell. As I said in my video - Horace and Clarabelle are great characters in their own right, but their story is so in intimately intertwined that it needed to be told as one. This is something that I only learned once I started researching and writing. Sometimes... most of the time... the video takes shape as you're writing or creating, not before. And as you're writing things change constantly. As I mentioned, I'd started writing this as two seperate pieces.
If I'd told this story in two seperate videos, they would almost be the exact same video with a few differences. In the past, people have been annoyed when I so much as repeat the same line in multiple videos, I couldn't imagine how they'd be if I uploaded two of the same video with a few differences here and there.
Also, combining these characters means I can get onto MORE characters even quicker, without mucking around making two identical videos.

People are annoyed when you repeat the same line? They must really hate this series then. Not a criticism in any way but pretty much every video does end up covering exact same animation journey. Rough version > Finalised look black and white pipe animation > rounder colour stretch animation > end of the classic cartoons > one off specials starting in the late 80’s > 90 and 00’s tv shows > modern flash cartoons. It’s how often the characters were used and how their portrayel changed over time that makes each video different.
Kinda weird how I always knew Clarabelle existed, and was rather fond of the character, though I never knew that Horace existed at all until now.
That's because Clarabelle was in Mickey Mouse Clubhouse and Horace wasn't.

Poor Horace & Clarabelle. They've been forgotten way too many times.
Well, I don't think they're forgotten. They're seen at Mickey Mouse shorts and Mickey and the Roadster Racers. In fact, I've just found out that Horace and Clarabelle are meet and greeting at California Adventure recently.
You know who also fell into obscurity? Casey Junior. He debuted in his own short in the Reluctant Dragon before appearing in Dumbo, only to get upstaged by the movie's supporting cast. Meanwhile, Figaro the cat has appeared in various shorts after his first appearance in Pinocchio.
Not as much as Clara Cluck.
Amitai Katz Clarabelle is at least still used from time to time. I've literally never heard of Horace before this video. I always assumed Clarabelle was Goofy's girlfriend we rarely see.

I find Clarabelle and Horace's history absolutely fascinating, and I'm so sad the two have been largely forgotten after being basically succeeded by Donald and Goofy.

@@TheRealProcyon Both of them appeared in most European Disney comics. They weren't as popular as the regular characters but still appeared regularly and had colorful personalities. The Horace I remember was sort of a smarter, more sarcastic Goofy who is intermittently adept in situations while being played for a fool by being too certain of himself.
Plot twist: in the end, Horace gets together with Goofy and leaves Clarabelle alone and confused 😂

Horace Horsecollar & Clarabelle Cow are one of my favorite forgotten Disney characters but not only that Sylvia Marpole from An Extremely Goofy Movie is also my favorite forgotten Disney character.
I thought PJ's girl was more interesting, but both were heavily tied to a decade. The 3rd wheel in the two movies is highly dated as he is essentially just Pauli Shore, who is a pretty annoying actor in all his roles.
I hope they bring back Sylvia one day...

In comics Horace was (and probably still is) sometimes depicted as a repairman by profession so I was happy they kinda included that in House of Mouse

(My theory is) Clarabelle is cheating on Horace with Goofy, the reason that they disappeared was because clarabelle felt awkward around Horace’s friends because they all hated her for cheating on him. So she spent time away from them, Horace stopped seeing his friends because they all had successful relationships (Mickey and Minnie, Donald and daisy) and so he also stopped seeing them. Years later after neither was friends with them anymore they met up again and started dating. But clarabelle left him for goofy. Torn between them she dated one at a time (on again off again) and made friends with Minnie and daisy again

yeah ive definitely seen the character before, in most of these clips actually, i just didnt piece together that he was the same recurring character!
It's so weird to hear that for American audiences, Horace and Clarabelle basically didn't exist for several decades, because to this day they're still regulars in European comics. Also, in the European comics, Clarabelle is full on dating Horace and there is no romance with Goofy whatsoever, which in my opinion is a good thing.

As a European growing up with the comics, seeing Clarabelle depicted as Goofy's love interest in various cartoons always makes me feel kind of confused and uncomfortable.
I remember as a kid, being curious as to who these background characters were. But back in the early 1990s, you didn't have much to go on. They were in childhood books of mine. But it seems that these characters typically only get used if it is necessary to use a lot of characters at once. But they seem to be the go to characters if extra roles need to be fulfilled in a cartoon.

As a swede, I keep forgetting that these characters are forgotten. Since I grew up with both of them through european comics, I've always considered them as relevant and going strong as the rest of the main gang. Then, when i played Epic Mickey for example, it felt weird to see them banished to the Cartoon Wasteland among the others from the rubber hose days.

As a little kid I used to like the idea of Goofy and Clarabelle being together mostly because of "Mickey, Donald, Goofy: The Three Musketeers," but have since then become indifferent towards the couple. I do think her being with Horace make more sense.
Honestly even if they don't know what to do with them I'll be happy if they keep up cameos, sort of as if we can see them as still apart of Mickey's life, Honestly that's what they should have done with Oswald and Ortensia, just started having them wandering around , even if they are taking part in the episode

In the Dutch comics they live together, but I'm not sure if they are actually married or just engaged. Also, Horace is a mechanic in those comics and his garage is often featured. But this was a nice video and I'm happy you did those two
I've missed Horace as a kid and wondered why he wasn't used as much as he was. Not only that I have always shipped him with Clarabelle long before she and Goofy became a couple. I hope he keeps being brought back. As for favorite appearances, The Band Concert and Get a Horse.

One of the funniest thing of DuckTales 2017 for me was the reaction of American audience to Fethry Duck. Like... who the hell was it??? Meanwhile, in European Disney comics, he became one of the most recognizable family members of the Duck clan. 😂😂😂
@@marveldcfan2477 - I guess Disney comics aren't taken that seriously by everybody in the States. That is, they're more like something a mother or grandmother would buy their very-young child if they've been good, while the very-young child wouldn't exactly follow the story or be disappointed that it wasn't Spider-Man. Most of them just think of Mickey, Donald and Goofy.
GRANTED, there *are* teen and adult collectors of Donald Duck comics who do appreciate the stories and history, but it's just kind of not as strong in numbers as in Europe.
It's a shame that Disney neglected them on screen for so long, but I'm so happy more people remember them now, thanks to the new series and shorts. Now if only they could give Oswald some more love before he falls into the public domain.

Despite the strange name, I think Maximum Horsepower could have been really cool. The idea of 30s characters finding themselves in a modern cartoon setting reminds me of the premise for Animaniacs.

I really enjoyed your video a lot! I watched every single Mickey Mouse short from 1928-1995 on the Walt Disney Treasures DVD sets in order, and I also noticed that both Horace and Clarabelle's appearances really started to become a lot less frequent around the time we get to the shorts in Technicolor.
While it is sad that they aren't as common in the Mickey Mouse series nowadays, it is interesting that they sometimes appear as walk around characters at Disneyland and Walt Disney World. Keep up the great work on your videos and Explaining Disney Series! :)
I always thought Clarabelle was max's mom
that could be possible like what if she died after max was born it happens a lot during labor where the mother dies after giving birth and the doctors gave max to goofy since he was the only living parent and that's why in a extremely goofy movie goofy says he hasn't date in a while but that's just a theory *a film theory* thanks for reading

Remember both of them from watching classic cartoons and reading comics as a kid. Glad to see they both are still around. I am in my 60s.
I would hardly call Clarabelle obscure. She's been in so many things since as far back as I can remember. Even today she is pretty prominent. I'm speaking from an American viewpoint of course but still.
Horace on the other hand...
The fact that these two got placed in the sidelines is how long-running animated shows have been doing to this day whenever newer characters become more popular than the older characters.

Clarabelle cow is just one of those people who likes to play around with two different people, dating back-and-forth while keeping relationships from either one separate. Meaning she likes to be with either goofy or Horace, one or separately the other whenever she wishes.
I'd love to see a show where Mickey, Donald, and Goofy have a rivalry with Oswald, Horace, and Clarabelle.

Some of my favorite obscure Disney characters, I was so happy to see them again in the Get a Horse short.
I really appreciate you making this video. Horace was always a favorite of my mine since he didn’t seem to get much emphasis or attention. Clarabelle I feel still gets plenty of attention. But I like to root for the underdog so I support Horace all the way. And if Maximum Horsepower was made I know for a fact I would’ve loved it as a kid:)

Clarabelle's voice was provided for many years by Elvia Allman, who also appeared in person on a number of sitcoms.
This video was very comprehensive/informative! One fairly notable appearance you left out (the only one I can think of) was both H&C's appearances in the Mickey Mouse Club title sequence - that's a good one to check out sometime. (especially the colorized version) :)

Great video. Clarabelle has been my FAV character forever never replaced her with another character she was my first favorite character and still is. Sad her yellow suit has been removed but I love her Disney Parks suit!

They being engaged is still a thing in Italian Disney Comics. Which is sort of it's own contunity (as I'm from Germany, the Italian Disney comics are a big thing by us and the Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck medium most recognizable).

Awesome video dude, love your channel. I never knew that Clarabelle and Horce were love interests at one point. I only ever knew of the flirtations between her and goofy, got to the point that people theorized that she was Max mom if I remember correctly

The saddest thing about Horace is that he was phased out MUCH more than Clarabelle, so his GIRLFRIEND was seen to have another bf whilst he was gone. I always thought that Goofy was Clarabelle’s counterpart/date, NOT Horace. In fact, I didn’t even know about him until a Cuphead facts video mentioning how Phear Lap looked like Horace.
I honestly thought these two were swept under the rug and forgot about for a long time. It’s great to see them still going.

I know it's not going to happen, but "Maximum Horse Power" could be a really fun episode of Ducktales 2017. A show that loves drawing from the Disney Afternoon's history, diving into a lost piece of it's history could be even more fun. Maybe earn Horace some new fans with a cool premise for his whereabouts that got cut sadly short.
I think a goofy and horace team up short would be pretty funny

I’m glad my two favorite Disney characters are coming back to the spotlight and after all it’s should be the magnificent 8 which should include Mickey, Donald, Goofy, Minnie, Daisy, Plato, Clarabelle & Horace.
I always thought that the Horace and Clarabelle in epic Mickey Were Their Rubber hose Styles and they arrived in wasteland because they were replaced by their current day versions.also great vid!
Horace is my favorite minor character. Even Clarabelle is better known than him.

I think if Disney were to make a calendar with the Chinese Zodiacs, Clarabelle and Horace would be the best representatives of the Ox and Horse Chinese Zodiacs! It makes sense in a way AND a win/win for both fans old and new alike!
I... liked the concept of Maximum Horsepower up UNTIL the aliens. I think a series about a washed-up Horace trying to break back into cartoons and being resentful of Donald and Goofy is a hilarious idea.
