A bit of devils advocate, do a tasting with a brief ingredients list on the side. Get the tasting notes and ingredients up front and watch it be made the proper way afterwards.
Episode review: Personally seeing the tasting notes before seeing what was actually in the drink was a bit confusing; trying to understand your description of the drink was difficult without knowing what was in it. Perhaps if you included the recipe on the screen while you gave the tasting notes at the beginning of the episodes, that would negate the confusion and prove to be a better format. I totally understand how showing the drink at the beginning of the episode can be beneficial though “here’s what to expect from the episode, see if this is the kind of drink that will appeal to you” but for sure I think a recipe shown during that would be huge improvement. As usual though Greg, you never disappoint; all episodes are a pleasure to watch. Keep doing what you do!
I see where you guys are coming from, but I think if he puts the list of ingredients at the beginning of each episode, new viewers will probably be less likely to stick around for his personality and miss the draw of his content. Just a thought.
I like the tasting after. I find it more interesting to see the drink built and then your reaction to the flavors after. The other seems anti-climatic for me.

The build up of making the drink and then finally getting to see all the ingredients come together and taking that first sip is an experience of the show. I think that format is just better. know someone who used to work at M&H london there's a few mistakes here that lead to a very different drink. firstly best to use Artist blend for the body of the drink not a peated scotch the original used Asyla but artist blend actual fits a bit better and Aslya is very rare these days. They use Peat Monster and always have for the float. The ginger syrup and this is the biggy needs to be made from ginger juice and sugar not ginger steeped in syrup. this is then premixed with honey syrup 2.1 and the mix is used in equal parts with the lemon juice so the cocktail reads as 40ml AB 20 h&g syrup 20 lemon 10 PM. I thoroughly recommend trying it this way as it really punches other versions out the water.
I feel like doing the taste review at the beginning takes away from the pay-off at the end. Plus it's harder to tell what part of the drink is bringing out what taste if that makes sense. Good on you for trying something different though!
On the format change: it's isn't wrong, but lacks the context of the ingredients to explain why the tasting notes are what they are. On the mid-show ad: yes please. I'm glad your show supported. And the world needs more HTD
Yeah! The Penicillin is absolutely fantastic - I often prepare it at home! And with the recent (Feb 2020) IBA update, it's now an official IBA cocktail!

In a little bit of trivia, the whiskey that was used at Milk & Honey was specifically the Compass Box Asyla, at least according to somebody I've talked to that had the drink there. Legit no idea if it's still being produced though. Great video as always!

I just picked up a 1907ish Hamilton railroad watch. It doesn't wind up but none the less it's very cool. It was my great grandfather's it was passed down through generations. Now it's mine. Awesome!!!
I do a raw ginger syrup for this, grind up the ginger in food processor and then squeeze it out with a nut milk bag. Mix with sugar in a jar to dissolved. I do this because I also use 10 year Laphroaig for the whole pour instead of the float. It's crazy intense but lemon ginger smoke are all locked in an intense battle for dominance but none prevail for long. The honey is there in the back to soothe the rough edges between the intense blasts of flavor.
Personally I think I like having the tasting notes afterward! It's fun to watch what goes into a drink and thinking about what it might taste like, and then seeing how your reaction lines up with what I was thinking. Sometimes its a good surprise
The penicillin is probably my favourite cocktail along with Negroni. I've never tasted such a complex, balanced mixture of flavours. I make mine with famous grouse but may try it with some single malt at some point. I usually float some Laphroaig Quarter Cask or Lore, although I am pretty sure I've used Caol Ila at some point. Thanks a lot Greg!
@@mommylap Never had Smoky Black Grouse, how is it? I live in Scotland and peated scotch are my thing but I don't how it would be a penicillin with full smoky flavour insted of just a hint. I usually put only a barspoon of Islay scotch, unlike Greg that is being quite abundant on that! Cheers!
I really like having the tasting notes up front. Honestly, either format is good, but it's fun to see your notes. Having the notes upfront will help people looking for a drink to make know if they want to make the video's drink before watching how to make it.
I'm a big Islay scotch fan and love this drink. It's one of my favorite cocktails! Having said that, I really do think it's best drank through a straw, letting the float blend into the drink as it dilutes and sits. Really great drink.
Background music took me back to New Orleans and im so here for it!! Especially while fantasizing about either crafting this cocktail myself and/or drinking one in the streets of the Quarter😜🤩 this sounds amazing as I’m both obsessed with ginger and love a good balance of intensity and sour; format for me is fine either way as long as they always end in stumbling mumbling hilarity at the end😉🥃best part! Cheers!
I like having the process before the tasting, that build up and anticipation as you make the drink, where the audience doesn't know how you're going to react to the drink until you've tried it, that format itself makes for an interesting video. It's the not knowing what to expect factor for those of us who know jack shit about making cocktails but like watching your videos
I love to make mine with 2 oz of rye whiskey, .75 ginger honey, .75 lemon and I put the .25 scotch in the shaker. Most float it but if you shake you still get the smoke and taste from the scotch and it all brings it together
I have to be up at 5am to see patients again tomorrow, but I am so excited for this drink. The sweet gal over at the diviest karaoke bar in town made me a surprisingly great Penicillin when I was in for lunch a while back. I'll put this one on hold for now and see if the liquor store has anything left on the shelf when the weekend rolls around.
Not opposed to the reverse format per se if it works better for you, but the normal time-tested format tends to give me the best entertainment. I love getting told a story about a drink, watching it be built, and then see how you react to your creation. The build up makes me the most pleased. I feel like I got rewarded for just clicking rather than watching this video.
Canada just closed its borders to American citizens, but if you need to, I'll sneak you in. Thanks for sharing your art and everything you do to bring joy in the world.
I'm not sure what JT was saying, but it seemed to me that Americans can cross to Canada but Canadians can't go anywhere? Even the reporters were confused!!
The report I read said all borders but the amarican border was closing to everyone but Canadians? But it's all so confusing I honestly don't know what exactly is going on at our borders..
I like this format, it's just as good as the other one. I prefer tasting first just because it's new to me, and I like seeing you change things up from time to time, keeps the show alive
I'm definitely a whiskey woman. Though I rarely drink these days, I gotta say how freaking fun you are to watch! I think I'd probably like this drink. Going outside my usual, I think the last 2 drinks I had at a bar were a Limoncello (homemade, they claimed)... martini? It was in a martini glass and apparently had a little Amaretto in it though all I could taste was lemon (pretty good actually). Then I had at this great little tavern called The Mason Jar a blood orange margarita (again they claimed to make the blood orange mix homemade) which was dynamite. My bestie had their strawberry jalapeno margarita which she said was also righteous.
Love this drink, but mine is a bit different proportions. 2oz scotch, 3/4 oz honey syrup, between 1/2 and 3/4 oz lemon juice, and 1/4 oz peated scotch. I muddle sliced ginger then add these ingredients and shake. I add the peated scotch to avoid what happens when you float it, the first few sips are very Smokey. Glasgow blend is also peated, I’ve used Dewars which may have some smoke but it’s more malty.
If my memory serves me correct, the blended scotch is preferably something unpeated (such as Artist’s Blend) so as not to overpower the drink with smoke. Probably my absolute favorite cocktail, but then again I love scotch and I love smoke so no shocker there.
I work at a corporate bar that has a pretty good riff on the penicillin it’s my favorite drink on the menu. 2oz Monkey shoulder, 1oz Lime juice, 1oz honey syrup, .5oz ginger syrup, 1 dash peychauds. Garnish with 2 thin slices of orange and three pieces of picked candied ginger. “Whisky & Ginger”
I prefer recipies first then taste. I dont make any of them at the moment so knowing what's in it and how it's made helps me understand where everything is coming from.
The Amoxicillin is the agave version of this. Sub Vida Mezcal for blended Scotch, lime for lemon, agave syrup for honey (or just keep it), and Chichicapa for the float. This drink absolutely slaps!
I watched your episode with lime cordial and now make the same using lemons because I like the aromatics the zest adds. Currently drinking bourbon and lemon cordial on ice, but think I could use the cordial to make many lemon forward cocktails. Maybe even this
I can go either way on format. The history bits are my favorite, and, as long as those keep getting inject directly into my veins, I will be a happy boy.
Personally I prefer the tasting notes at the end. I think it creates a story arc that is very satisfying. Love love love all of your videos. Thanks for doing them.
I think an open with a vague description of the taste would be a nice opener, but I like the full description after the time it takes to make the drink. The opener to intrigue us, but the ingredients to hook us. The final verdict to pay it all off.
I like this format better! It gives me that instant interest in what to expect from the drink. If I want to know more about how to make it myself, I keep watching. *Record scratch* This is How to Drink and you're probably wondering how I got here.
'Quarantini' - I hate this, so so much. I also love the idea that you made this episode the normal way first, found out the footage was corrupted and decided to say you were shooting it backwards.
Nope, we shot it backwards. My audience retention chart plummets more or less as soon as I get into the tasting notes, in other words the second the drink is complete, so I wanted to test running it the other way.
Hi, big fan of the show. I prefer the tasting notes at the end, it's fun to see the ingredients and process before getting the tasting notes to see if the expectation matches the actual drink.
As someone who hasn’t had the opportunity to try a lot of these cocktails, it’s kinda nice to have the tasting notes up front. I can see how people who are not in this boat could see it, but I like it
i kinda like the change up, you can decided from tasting notes if its a thing for you, advertisement happens before the mixing so you get a nice solid chunk of recipe for the rest of the video. always a fan of your on the fly brand of silliness so keep up the good work
Much better format. I like the tasting notes up front. If someone found the Paper Plane strong would adding a quarter once of simple syrup help? Or a Lemon Simple syrup?
My dad showed me your channel, and wow! You deserve way more subs and views! I would love to see a behind the scenes video too, if you don't already have one. Your setup and camera shots are amazing.
This was awesome. But kinda hard to go for, tho since Lagavullin 16 is not that affordable here in Brazil... costs around 180-200 dollars a bottle (900 reais). So I made it with Laphroaig 10, which is still around 80 bucks (400 reais), and I'm hooked. But not at first sight, I had to go back to it after some time, and dude, best one yet. Been making some whisky drinks like old-fashioned and irish coffee, and I'm loving the ride. Love your channel!
Great video all-around! I didn't mind the tasting at the beginning. It was fun to try and guess what was in it. Not something I'd want you to do all the time but I liked that y'all changed it up.
I can see why people might dislike the tasting first, but I like the idea of knowing if I’d actually like the drink or not before watching the recipe. Seems like a less entertaining but more practically useful format.
While I did watch all the way through because I love your personality I definitely prefer tasting notes at the end. It makes more sense to me from a "storytelling" perspective and I agree with what others have said about it being difficult to understand the tasting notes without knowing what's in it. I also agree with what's been said about it discouraging new viewers from watching all the way through if you kept this format (especially if you had the ingredients at the start).
I’d combine the ginger syrup and the honey syrup and maka a honey ginger syrup, alternatively make some ginger juice to replace the syrup. I also find that a single malt Highlands whisky works very well for this cocktail
I do like building the drink then the tasting notes so I can see what’s in it that causes that note, but I can also appreciate the notes first and discovering the ingredients that make it so. Basically I’ll keep watching not matter what, so I’m not sure why I’m commenting.
I HIGHLY recommend you guys do the bright cellars deal. Did the same and it's great. Even if you don't really know your tastes, the questions are simple and they do a pretty decent job. Once you get your first order and try everything make sure you rate the wines. If you choose to order again, it'll narrow down the wines so you get something you like! Also, definitely trying this cocktale
Honestly, I like going on the drink making journey before getting the tasting. I like knowing why your tasting whatever notes are in the drink. Gonna keep watching either way though; I love this channel.
The penicillin I know calls for muddling raw ginger, then adding 2oz blended scotch, 3/4oz each of honey syrup and lemon juice, then shaking, then doing the float. But I have ginger syrup now, so I'll try it your way at some point.
As an Islay lover, this is by far my favorite cocktail! Glad to see it featured. A bartender put an interesting twist on it for me by using a mezcal float instead of Scotch, which was pretty damn good.
Everyone seems to be saying it already, but I like the tasting notes at the end. Btw: love your videos! I started mixing drinks after I became a repeat viewer.
Definitely in my top 5 cocktails I always order. For the people who dont drink dark liquor you can swap out the scotch for tequila and give it a mezcal float for smokiness.
I don’t have that particular Compass Box blend- but what would be a good runner up for the blended scotch? I have these: JW Green, JW Gold, Peat Monster, Dewars, Dewars 18, Monkey Shoulder, Chivas.

How To Drink
I think the normal make-it→taste-it format is more better than this format. It just feels weird with the tasting notes first.
Do in medias res next! For the format, I mean, but if there's a drink by that name do both.
Yessss .. i was hoping you would do an episode like this
Make then drink, cause that's how the world works!
concur with the old format. seeing the history and details that go into making the drink set you up for a better understanding of the flavor profile and end result.
Everyone's over here buying up all the toilet paper, leaving all this perfectly good whiskey and gin on the shelves.
Thank goodness, what else are we gonna do while sitting at home because everything's closed.
I went to the store this morning and just bought two bottles of gin and hafl a pound of chocolate. I don't know how to feel about that
I've got bourbon, rum, vodka....I need tequila, gin, brandy...at minimum.
@@YTLSF that sounds completely logical to me
Not me my guy, just got back from a preparatory run for when the rest of the populous figures out that the stores are still full lol
Just feedback: Make the drink first, then do the tasting. Makes more sense that way since we can attribute tastes to the ingredients you put in it.
A bit of devils advocate, do a tasting with a brief ingredients list on the side. Get the tasting notes and ingredients up front and watch it be made the proper way afterwards.
I think yes the usual format help us be more involved in the cocktail creation. And I think that's the purpose of this channel in the end.
Are we all just laughing at you? Yes, he does that; and said at the start that this was a little different, but not on purpose .. damn noobies
Agreed.
having the tasting at the beginning is WRONG and i DO NOT stand for it
I agree. It is tough to understand the tasting notes without knowing what is in the drink.
Agreed
IkeWitt is correct. It’s also jarring...but that’s second to being lost on what you’re actually tasting.

I actually love the background music. Lifts my mood every time I hear it.
I like this format, it's just as good as the other one. I prefer tasting first just because it's new to me, and I like seeing you change things up from time to time, keeps the show alive
Oh wow I didn't realize this was a year old oops
"Quarantini" garnish with toilet paper
with a float of purell
NileRed made alcohol from toilet paper, he was ahead of the curve on that one.
I will not rest until I can use the phrase "my float may have been a bit thick" into casual conversation.
That's what I've heard too.
I'd love to see an episode on making shrubs... and of course, the drinks to use them in!
I prefer recipies first then taste. I dont make any of them at the moment so knowing what's in it and how it's made helps me understand where everything is coming from.
A drink to cure, maybe not the covid, but at least my anxiety.
You ok?
The Amoxicillin is the agave version of this. Sub Vida Mezcal for blended Scotch, lime for lemon, agave syrup for honey (or just keep it), and Chichicapa for the float. This drink absolutely slaps!
we can all stay indoors safe playing runescape while he makes runescape drinks!! .... please make runescape drinks :(
Resto pot with shark and karambwan float
I watched your episode with lime cordial and now make the same using lemons because I like the aromatics the zest adds. Currently drinking bourbon and lemon cordial on ice, but think I could use the cordial to make many lemon forward cocktails. Maybe even this
I can go either way on format. The history bits are my favorite, and, as long as those keep getting inject directly into my veins, I will be a happy boy.
Personally I prefer the tasting notes at the end. I think it creates a story arc that is very satisfying. Love love love all of your videos. Thanks for doing them.
The backwards format felt very much like a "Yup. That's me. You're probably wondering how I got here."
flipped style is awesome. Having allergies to ingredients like cinnamon and knowing the flavor we are getting into first is pretty great. fan of that.
"What is cork?" would be a great April Fool's day video. :p (As would "What is vodka?" with lots of neutral tasting notes.)
I think an open with a vague description of the taste would be a nice opener, but I like the full description after the time it takes to make the drink. The opener to intrigue us, but the ingredients to hook us. The final verdict to pay it all off.
Everyone else: **complaining about the tasting notes being first**
Me: "That deer looks like it's possessed, what's wrong with its left eye?" o.o
I like this format better! It gives me that instant interest in what to expect from the drink. If I want to know more about how to make it myself, I keep watching. *Record scratch* This is How to Drink and you're probably wondering how I got here.
'Quarantini' - I hate this, so so much.
I also love the idea that you made this episode the normal way first, found out the footage was corrupted and decided to say you were shooting it backwards.
Nope, we shot it backwards. My audience retention chart plummets more or less as soon as I get into the tasting notes, in other words the second the drink is complete, so I wanted to test running it the other way.
@@howtodrink Well hopefully it works!
@@howtodrink I'm surprised to hear that. Your tasting notes are always so funny to me!
Hi, big fan of the show. I prefer the tasting notes at the end, it's fun to see the ingredients and process before getting the tasting notes to see if the expectation matches the actual drink.
I've been memeing with this drink at the bar I work at. I make a penecilin in a shot and then drop it into a Corona to create a coronavirus
I enjoy where we see you make it first. It feels like we earned the tasting notes by being there while you make it.
As someone who hasn’t had the opportunity to try a lot of these cocktails, it’s kinda nice to have the tasting notes up front. I can see how people who are not in this boat could see it, but I like it
Can't say I'm a huge fan of seeing the tasting first. Can say that no matter what order you do them in, I'll still watch 'em.
i kinda like the change up, you can decided from tasting notes if its a thing for you, advertisement happens before the mixing so you get a nice solid chunk of recipe for the rest of the video. always a fan of your on the fly brand of silliness so keep up the good work
Much better format. I like the tasting notes up front. If someone found the Paper Plane strong would adding a quarter once of simple syrup help? Or a Lemon Simple syrup?
Great Share..... Thank you for being you and explaining the tasting notes... it really helps understand the dynamics of the drink
Just to comment on the format, I like you starting with the tasting notes before going into making the drink. Good experiment!
I love this flavor profile. I personally prefer a Glasgow mule, but both are fantastic
Just did the same. Used Laphroaig 10 as a float with Monkey Shoulder as the base scotch. Unreal cocktail for peat lovers.
Like the tasting notes at the end. Like seeing it built then how it tastes when all together.
Watching this channel grow has been a real treat, and the best part is its still the same nerdy Greg
Great video all-around! I didn't mind the tasting at the beginning. It was fun to try and guess what was in it. Not something I'd want you to do all the time but I liked that y'all changed it up.
I love seeing scotch cocktails! Scotch is by far my favourite spirit, so seeing it used in new ways is always cool
I can see why people might dislike the tasting first, but I like the idea of knowing if I’d actually like the drink or not before watching the recipe. Seems like a less entertaining but more practically useful format.
I just have to say that I love your videos! My moscow Mule with your ginger syrup recipe is my all time favirote drink!
But I have ginger syrup now, so I'll try it your way at some point.
yesterday. finally made ginger syrup. and today Im enjoying this drink. Its really good. thanx. salud🍻from mexico
