  • From www.swimmingpoolsteve.com/pag... - If you have a problem with your pool heater in that it will not fire or turn on, this video will discuss the most common reasons why this happens and what you can do to resolve this problem.
    Most commonly the pressure switch inside the heater (safety switch) is not able to close due to low pressure or low flow in the pool system. This could be from a variable speed pump that is running on too low of a speed setting, but most commonly this problem is from a restriction in your filter. If you have a sand filter be sure to backwash it thoroughly to resolve this flow problem. If you have a cartridge filter be sure that your cartridges are cleaned with a degreasing agent (not just rinsing them off). If these tips do not resolve your heater firing problem then consider having a heater cleaning service performed by a qualified gasfitter.

    Swimming pool Steve. My Hayward pool heater wouldn't start up. Your advice on using a degreaser on our paper cartridge was the solution to our problem. You know your stuff my friend. We learned a troubleshooting tip that helped confirm that the saturated filter was the problem. Hayward advised to remove the cartridge filter then reassemble and start the pump temporarily. Upon doing so the heater started up and worked like a charm.
    Thanks for posting. Your advice was a BIG help.

    Thanks Steve I just wanted to share my experience with my Hayward H1000 ... I tried everything you described and you are 100% correct for normal operation when pool filters naturally get dirty and disrupt flow... however my heater wouldn’t start after turning it on in the spring after 6 months of no operation and a cold winter. What I did is I removed the lid (removing the 6 screws on top of heater) did a quick overall inspection on all connections and then realized the fan wasn’t turning but can hear the electric motor running attempting to get it going ... so I realized if the fan doesn’t start, neither will the heater - they are linked. Turns out all it needed was a little kickstart just by rotating it manually a few turns. It probably was dirty, dusty etc because of the layoff and winter. All good now.

    • @Swimmingpoolsteve
      @Swimmingpoolsteve  6 років тому

      Thank you for this information. The concept is similar to pool pumps (and any electric motor) in that sometimes you need to jog it or spin it manually. Corrosion develops on the motor internals and an electrical connection is not being made. Moving the motor position will allow a better connection and the motor starts.

    thanks for your feedback. I actually did call a licensed tech. but i also told him i read about orifices and so i shut the gas off fro m the house and turned the heater off and cleaned the orifices. i did strip them and when he came he just put it back for me and voila it worked. I appreciate your feedback. thank u again.

    I like your relaxing voice and simplicity in explaining. In addition to what you said, spiders will block the gas nozzles and the best way to clean it is using tobacco pipe cleaner (bristle) . It worked for me after leaving my filter unused for 3 years for this stupid reason.

    Steve I have a 5 year old Hayward H series pool heater. Been working fine. Noticed this year sometimes the Mode button was a little slow to react now this morning cannot move the heater into operational setting from standby and the display window is showing 56 ( or maybe that is "stuck button")? We had extremely violent storms last evening come through and I'm wondering if there is some condensation behind the button sensor in the control panel. Is there a way to easily pop out the panel or something I can do or perhaps should I wait to see if the sun dries it out and it fixes the problem on its own. I know the temp of my pool is not 56 so that is why I think the panel is stuck. Thanks for any help you can offer.

    I cleaned the filter cartridges this morning and just like magic the heater fire up. Thanks for the information, I was going crazy because last week the heater worked and then it just stopped and there were no indicator lights to look for a possible cause. You were spot on the filter pressure rose 10 PSI in the last week and I noticed that the skimmers were not keeping up with the spring pollen. Back in business and the grandkids are frolicking in the pool again.

    Three years ago, my IF code was a stuck regulator diaphragm on the back
    of the gas valve. If you DON'T know what you are doing, leave it alone
    and replace the valve. If you have a clue about mechanical stuff, you
    can remove the rear cover of the valve, and check for the disk sticking.
    This winter it was clogged jets in the big black pipe at the bottom.
    7/16 wrench to unscrew the jets, tap out the gunk, and clean the pipe if
    you can. Replace the jets into the black pipe, and test. IF usually
    doesn't involve the ignition. If start the heater in the dark, look for
    the orange glow in the burner window, this will tell you the igniter is
    likely working ok. Can also be caused by low fuel flow, or in my case an
    LP tank with less than 1/8 full. Not enough pressure head in the LP
    lines to get a good solid 'WOOOOF' when the gas comes on.

      Call the installers back to fix it. Most likely there is a problem with the supply line (gas) and often they are too small to supply the amount of fuel needed for these giant appliances. Especially propane which is certainly more finicky than natural gas.

    What if heater wont power on at all. What are some things I should look at when diagnosing the problem?

    • @Swimmingpoolsteve
      @Swimmingpoolsteve  4 роки тому

      First thing for sure is simply to start inside at your electrical panel and make sure the breaker is on, and not tripped out, and then go to the disconnect near to the heater and verify that it is on as well. If you are an electrician or have been trained for testing electrical values safely, then you would use a multimeter to verify that the voltage is what it should be, and then follow it from the house panel to the disconnect, to the internal power connections in the heater. If the heater will not power on at all then somewhere along the way your circuit is being interrupted. Would not be crazy to find something like a rodent chewed through one of the lines at some point. If you have a pool heater in a cold climate area then it is important to actually power off the breaker over the winter. If you just turn the heater off but leave the breaker on then the internal transformer in the heater will be receiving power still and will be warm enough to attract pests.

    i have I F error code and i cleaned my NEW filter only have had the pool opened for 2 1/2 weeks. filter is brand new. my heater was working like a charm for past 2 1/2 weeks and now kaput. or IF error. i turn it off wait 5 minutes gas that is , turn it back on and it goes to pool and then it flashes the temp I want then it says my pool is 79, which i had it up to 87, then it flashes then 79 the wheel inside starts going round and then the clicking noise then it sounds like for a sec it is going to start the green heat light goes on for about 5 secs then off. what do u think I should do. my heater is 2 years old.

    • @Swimmingpoolsteve
      @Swimmingpoolsteve  7 років тому +1

      I know exactly what you should do, and I hope very much you do it, and that is to call a licenced gas technician to come and diagnose this problem for you. Imagine standing in your backyard and turning on 10 big BBQ units all at the same time...but not lighting them. Just turning the propane gas on full on all ten units. Would that make you nervous to stand in the center of 10 BBQ units all pouring propane out? It should. Your pool heater is the same size as 10 BBQ units and you probably have your face six inches away from it as you are reading IF error codes. If your heater does not fire up properly then feel free to turn off the system for a second, and then backwash your filter really well. If the heater continues to not fire up after that then you should stop trying to diagnose the problem as there is no other testing which you can do that is safe and likely to resolve the problem. I hope this info is helpful.

      Yes, I suggest that you get a licenced gas technician to come out and troubleshoot this for you. Have you done yearly spring cleaning with a gas tech? This is a service well worth the money if you want your heater to last. Also, most pool owners have ZERO appreciation for how large (and dangerous) a pool heater is. You know how when you light a crappy BBQ up you have to use a long lighter or match and you kind of lean away as you reach over to light it as you expect the WHOOOSH when it goes? A large family BBQ might be 30,000 BTU. Your pool heater is most likely between 250,000 to 400,000 BTU. That WHOOSH from lighting a BBQ sounds a lot more like ringing in your ears and learning how to walk all over again from a pool heater. I have seen a 10 pound service door blow 100' off the front of a heater that was not firing correctly.

    • @TheNine6

    One thing not covered - the heater has a pressure sensor. My heater will not start until the pump has been running about 8 hours. After that, the heater fires right up. So run your pump for a day, then try turning on the heater.

    • @Swimmingpoolsteve
      @Swimmingpoolsteve  7 років тому

      The next step is to contact a licensed gas technician who can troubleshoot your heater (other than perhaps making sure the pressure switch in your heater is connected as they get taken apart when winterized quite often). Even when I worked for a major manufacturer of pool equipment we were not allowed to provide troubleshooting advice for heaters to anyone without a gas license. This is for safety - gas heaters are more dangerous that people tend to realize.

I can still use is if I open the pool return valve about 20% but I would like a fix so I'm not losing so much heat to the pool. Any suggestions?

    • @Swimmingpoolsteve
      @Swimmingpoolsteve  5 років тому

      Not a lot of instant solution so this problem, but the first thing I would try is remove a jet nozzle or two from your spa to reduce the restriction to flow. Maybe you get lucky and even one nozzle left out is enough to keep your system pressure lower.

    What is the minimum speed required for this heater to run? I have a variable pump and I am not sure about the speed needed. Thanks.

    • @Swimmingpoolsteve
      @Swimmingpoolsteve  5 років тому +1

      That is not a question able to be answered with the information provided. YOur plumbing system, and flow rate, will be 100% unique to your pool installation. There is no RPM that is standard to generate the required flow to close the flow switch on your heater. This is why you require a gas technician to calibrate your heater and pressure switch if needed, and they will be able to tell you, based on your specific situation, what RPM you should be running at. But even then, what if your filter gets a little dirty? Now that same RPM does not produce the flow that it did before - variable speed motor RPM and flow rate is a dynamic equation and not something you will find an easy answer for online unfortunately.

    • @OLeonOfficial
      @OLeonOfficial 5 років тому

      Thanks a lot for your detailed answer. Both the heater and the variable speed pump were purchased and installed by Leslie's pool. I was told that 2900 would be the minimum speed, it works. However, and now my other question: what is the sense of a variable pump if, let us say, we need the heater 24/7? The 'variable speed' doesn't make sense in my view. Thanks again.
