It always amazes me how they can take an old traditional Christmas carol that everyone has heard a thousand times, and turn it into something completely new and fresh. Once you hear them sing a carol in their style, you'll never hear it the same way again. I like the way you commented how much Kirstie adds to each song. This recording was made back when she was still not confident in her talent, was very shy and not wanting to be in the spotlight as much as the others, despite the fact that the Pentaholics KNEW how much she added. Thankfully, she finally came out of that shell and has become my favorite member mainly because of the confidence she now radiates.
The problem with Kirstie singing a solo is, there's this massive hole in the background, because she's not there to fill it. It's truly remarkable at just how good she is at background harmony and fills.
Rather clearly, her time on Broadway with a voice coach was time well-spent.
I'm an American and I've never said, "Happy Holidays, Y'all" to anyone. I say, "Merry Christmas, Y'all" (pronounced Ya'wl. As in Yawn, do away w/ the "N" and go heavy on the "L". Ya got it.) Some crazy Northerner must have come up w/ the spelling of Y'all, which is nothing like how we say it in the South. lol
I don't know who comes up w/ PTX's music arrangements, but I am pretty sure they are a musical genius. This was incredible. Thanks for the review, Barry, and Merry Christmas.
Shilohaura mentioned this already, but wanted to make sure you Barry, my good sir, caught that the ethereal ringing sound behind Mitch's opening phrase is Avi using his overtone mastery. Not that you needed more reason to be impressed with them.... :)

If you are wondering where that high pitched overtone came from it is AVI. He is able to produce TWO tones simultaneously. Again, I still love your format of react then review. Keep it up Barry.
This was during Mitch’s solo at the beginning. I didn’t catch it if he did it elsewhere. It adds so much yet it’s so subtle it’s easy to overlook.
I've been listening to this every Christmas for 5 years and didn't notice the overtone until today. 🤯
I'm pretty sure it was tuned higher than normal though. Not that it matters to me lol
I was wondering if that is what I was hearing! Usually the base note he builds the resonance off of is more apparent. I thought I was hearing things.

I think we say Happy Holidays because it is more inclusive. We just have so many people of different religions, beliefs, cultures here. This is the song that made me a Pentaholic! As a composer-jazz pianist, I was blown away by Avi’s overtone singing and the whistle notes, but what REALLY blew me out of the water were the minor 9th chords and major 9th at the end (Scott’s singing it).
I would love to hear Kirsten and Mitch sing together, but with Mitch singing in his lower register.

This was (a few years back) one of the video that solidified my love for this group. The arrangement, the unexpected chord changes... amazing.
Lovely and unexpected chords blended into the traditional melody made this arrangement a special gift for the ears.

What interesting thing I noticed on this is they used Avi's need to belt out the phrase near the top of his vocal range as a dramatic effect. They are so good with things like that.
You should check oit away in a manger. It was one they did after avi left but before matt joined. It's so good.

Dear Barry ☘️ can’t get enough of PTXmas. I like the little swanky spin in this traditional carol. Kevin’s beatboxing amazes! Every member is so into the performance and there is joy on their faces. Love! Can you believe I’m already missing PTXmas because Christmas comes in 2 days time and then it’s a long year’s wait. But then I know Barry will return to PTX’s catalog of songs. Barry, .please, please remember, coffee is lovely. The effect of drinking 3 shots of espresso from a tiny glass is, however, causes the rough equivalent of a explosion. Just a tiny bit calmer and you wouldn't have let "Angels' come out spelled "Angles'...No aspersions to angles - I'm sure they can make perfectly lovely noise, but for singing? Angels can really let loose...
Incredibly talented these young kids are. No matter what song they perform they make it better than it has ever been performed by others previously. Their musicality, creativity and presentations are unmatched these days. I'm probably a bit older than most that watch Pentatonix on a regular basis. I started watching them on "The Sing Off' and have followed them ever since. I go back to the early 1960's when there were the Hi-Los and the Four Freshmen. they were a bit like Pentatonix in their close harmonies and mostly Acapella performances. I would say that this video is 3 plus years old since Avi is here but they sure didn't lose anything when Matt joined them. It is incredible the vocal range all of these kids have. It is pretty obvious that they sincerely enjoy what they are doing . ! ! !

I love this one, it reminds me of singing this when I was a kid in school and we clapped during the Gloria bit in School and church. I went to a catholic school and this song was one of the fun songs we used to sing, I love that Pentatonix covered it it’s one of my favourite Christian/Christmas songs

I am not a professional singer. My career up until I retired was spend in computer maintenance, library work, office automation, and copying medical records, in that order. I do have a little experience in music. I was in my high school band, and everyone on my family played a musical instrument. I really enjoy the acapella groups these days. They push the boundaries and I think that is great.

This is the first time I've seen it sung this way. I love it! I also love the real reason for Christmas and LOVE Christmas all year.
This was the first song I heard by Pentatonix and it made me a Pentaholic for all these years! All those minor 9th chords throughout-until that last chord which was a major 9th!
Nothing is left to chance is it? For example the way each of them aspirate in the Gloria run in exactly the same point giving the run an extra emotional tug on the heartstrings each time it is sung. Nothing is left to chance yet it sounds so natural, nothing is contrived. Then the twists and turns with unexpected cadences and unexpected rhythms. God they are good..they are mor3 than good they are divine!
