And if you look at some of these ads, it's hard to argue with a straight face that the games were made for adults in the first place. Like the one Arthur mentioned.
Advertisements have a particular role here. They have the power to egg children on and lure them in. Every parent knows what response a commercial for sugar cereal or the latest Star Wars toy will get from their children. People advertise because it works. They want that product and, one way or the other, they're determined to get it. So we ought to think twice about the impact of ads for so-called "first person shooter video games," like the recent ad for a game that invites players to -- and I quote -- "get in touch with your gun-toting, cold-blooded murdering side."
I was given -- today, Arthur brought me the magazine with the ad that he mentioned, and he was kind enough to mark it for me. There really is a gun here. It says: More fun than shooting your neighbor's cat. I was given another ad that says: What kind of psycho drives a school bus into a war zone? And here's a school bus, heavily armed. This came out right after the incident in Springfield, Oregon.
Here's an ad that turns the argument I just made on its head: Psychiatrists say it's important to feel something when you kill. And then it goes on to say, you ought to get this technology because it bumps and you feel it. It says: Every sensation, every vibration, every mutilation, nine programmable weapons buttons. Customizable feedback software. Push the stick that pushes back and feel your pain. And here's one that's the most unbelievable of all. It says: Kill your friends guilt-free.

Correction! This was the most exposure Guilty Gear has ever gotten in its existence.
It was ironically essential in solidifying Guilty Gear's success in North America, specifically the United States. Ironic because Clinton's speech was all about "Advertising's bad, m'kay, protect the kids" as it took place a couple of weeks after Columbine. And now the average Guilty Gear and BlazBlue player is younger than this very speech or was too young to properly remember Clinton and Columbine happening.

Even though the game is called "Guilty Gear" you can "kill your friends, guilt-free". I don't get why Guilty Gear, or anime fighters, or anime other than Pokemon, Sailor Moon, and Dragonball Z didn't get more exposure than they did right then and there.

@@karanoelle4819 Thing is, even if they IK is super telegraphed in Missing Link, it's still bullshit as the IK wins the fucker the match instead of just the round, and there's no penalty for failing the IK.
@@DrEarthwormRobotnik the penalty for whiffhing IK is being in recovery. Considering this is game with infinites starting from big pokes, Yeah if you're too careless you'll just Die.
@@DrEarthwormRobotnik there is a penalty, if your opponent deflects the IK (which is really easy) they get invulnerability for 10-30 frames dependent on character. Baiken and Kliff are the only exceptions.

I was already gaming when this speech was given, and the propaganda was insane. Schools were boycotting Harry Potter over the Christian panic about it being 'witchcraft', etc. GTA was already a hit and the news was consistently running stories on it featuring gameplay (that's how I discovered it in the first place, for the Gameboy Color)... yapping about how it's "teaching children to murder our brave police officers", and all of this bullshit. This was the narrative they used to scapegoat the gaming industry for somehow being responsible for Columbine, when those two kids had the most lax parents I've EVER seen, and had mental health issues completely ignored/brushed off. But their HOBBY came into scrutiny by the government, not their ridiculous parents (Harris' father was a bomber pilot during the Clinton administration...wonder if that had anything to do w/ it... seeing as he knew Eric made pipe bombs but didn't care and helped him detonate them for fun). Instead, they villainized the gaming industry, and this continued all the way through 2005 when Rockstar was the topic of discussion in the halls of Congress, namely by then Senator Hillary Clinton, who was one of the top people fearmongering about children playing video games. Rockstar responded to this "Hot Coffee" fiasco by making the Statue of Happiness in GTA 4 a doppleganger of Hillary Clinton, holding a hot cup of coffee instead of a torch.
The Clintons have a weird history of animosity toward the gaming industry. It probably isn't much deeper than boomer-tier thinking "uh gun in game cause violent kid, yurr".

In Vigilante 8, Molo is one of the Coyotes (villains), and the original Vigilante 8 had a school bus as Molo's vehicle. Couple it with how Molo was once expelled from school because of his bad behavior, and it is why Molo is the most likely "psycho" that the Clinton speech formation was talking about.
Vigilante 8 reacted to the Columbine High School shooting (20 April 1999) and the subsequent Bill Clinton speech (another reaction, which was on 1 June 1999) by replacing Molo's school bus with a prison bus in the sequel (Vigilante 8: 2nd Offense) and the Microsoft remake (Vigilante 8 Arcade). Vigilante 8 Arcade was developed in 2008, but since that remake and its developers still reeled from Columbine even nine years after the tragedy, the reboot understandably replaced Molo's school bus with a prison bus.
