I was diagnosed with narcolepsy when I was 17 I'm now 23 and even though I went to a sleep doctor and did a sleep study everyone including my parents says it's all in my head and it's just an excuse to be lazy, when I say something about being tired my parents are always quick to snap at me saying "you have no reason to be tired" or "you've done nothing to make yourself tired" and it really just breaks my heart that no one understands that I have a serious problem, I have been medically diagnosed with narcolepsy, I had a certified doctor sign a piece of paper for me to take to school that I have narcolepsy but no one believes I really do, I wish I wasn't tired all the time, I want it to go away but no one understands me......

That is terrifying to have to deal with. I have actually witnessed a girl at an old job have an "attack" while she was working. Just fell over and appeared to have passed out/sleeping. She woke up a little while later and explained that she has narcolepsy. I never heard of it before then. Alot of my coworkers thought she was just making it up though. Never assume things about people.

I AM 72 YEARS OLD I'M PART OF THE NARCS I'VE LEARNED HOW TO DEAL WITH IT BUT THE THING IS NOW THEY WANT TO PUT ME ON MEDICATION OF A DIFFERENT KIND BUT AT THE SAME TIME THEY WANT TO TELL ME THAT IS SLEEP APNEA
IT WASN'T SLEEP APNEA BEFORE AND IT IS NOT SLEEP APNEA NOW I REFUSE TO ALLOW THEM TO TURN THE SITUATION OVER AND PUT ANYTHING BREATHING ON ME THEY WANT TO PUT A THING ON ME WITH YOU SLEEP OVERNIGHT YES MY SLEEPING HABITS HAVE CHANGED. I HAD AN EXCELLENT DOCTOR HE HAS RETIRED HE KNEW ME SO MUCH THAT IF I TOLD HIM SOMETHING HE KNEW JUST HOW I WAS.
THESE DOCTORS NOWADAYS ARE NOT THE SAME I USED TO JUST WANT TO SLEEP IN SCHOOL THEY USED TO HAVE JIM I SAID JUST GIVE ME 15 MINUTES I'LL BE OKAY EVERYBODY PLAYING GYM I JUST WANTED TO TAKE A NAP IN HOME ECONOMICS I HAD A FRONT SIDE DESK BY THE TEACHER.
FOR DOING CRAZY STUFF WOKE UP ONCE STARTED PEELING THE PAINT OFF THE WALL MY TEACHER STARTED YELLING WROTE ME UP AND SENT ME WITH THE CHIP TAPED TO THE PAPER VICE PRINCIPAL'S OFFICE I HAVE VIVID DREAMS I WOULD DREAM AND WAKE UP IN THE SITUATION WAS GOING ON MAYBE DOWNSTAIRS ON THE TV PEOPLE WILL SAY YOU'RE CRAZY PEOPLE WOULD SAY A LOT OF THINGS BUT PEOPLE DON'T KNOW THE INDIVIDUAL UNTIL THEY TALKED TO THEM. AT 17 THEY GAVE ME RITALIN I WOULDN'T GIVE IT TO A DOG
EVEN THOUGH THEY TRIED IT ONCE WHEN I WAS YOUNGER I BELIEVE 13 BUT I ONLY TOOK IT BECAUSE THEY HAD IT AS SAMPLES. BUT I HAD TO SAY WOW THIS IS KEEPING ME AWAKE!
THE SIDE EFFECTS OF THAT STUFF IS CRAZY FOR SOME KIND OF REASON I CAN'T REMEMBER I DID STOP BUT WENT BACK ON IT AGAIN AT 17.
MY NEIGHBOR HER SON WAS TAKING IT BUT HIS PERSONALITY WAS DIFFERENT HE WAS DESTRUCTIVE I ASKED HIS MOM WAS HE ON MEDICATION SHE SAID YES WHEN SHE SHOWED IT TO ME MY MOUTH DROPPED IT WAS THE SAME THING I WAS TAKING THE SAME MILLIGRAM MUCH LONGER THAN I WAS..
AT THE TIME THEY DIDN'T HAVE CELL PHONES SO I WENT BACK HOME AND CALLED MY DOCTOR AND ASK HIM MY NEIGHBOR WAS TAKING THE SAME THING HOW WAS IT THAT HE WAS ON ADAD OR WHAT THE HAM I FORGOT!
I ASKED MY DOCTOR HE SAID IT ACTS OPPOSITE THE BODY COMPOSITION
THE WORDS THAT CAME OUT OF MY MOUTH WAS WELL IF THAT CHILD WASN'T HYPERACTIVE THEN WHAT DOES IT DO WITH HIM??
      SAME MEDICATION HE WAS SILENT.
SO MANY STORIES TO TELL BUT GRANNY WILL LEAVE YOU WITH THIS ONE
I WAS WORKING ON A DIAPER MACHINE I WAS DREAMING I HAD TOO MANY PLACEMATS ON THE TABLE TOOK TWO DIAPERS AWAY AND A GIRL CALLED ME AND SHE SAID WHAT ARE YOU DOING I SAID I WAS TAKING THE PLACEMATS OFF THE TABLE HAD TOO MANY AND SHE SAID IF YOU DON'T PUT THEM DIAPERS IN THAT MACHINE!

Sleep paralysis is terrifying- I get it about 2-3 times a month. I also wake up screaming as if someone was about to murder me... just horrible. My husband isn't amused..but thankfully we have figured out that my dogs are able to calm me when I wake with paralysis or the terrors...I've trained myself to recognize that if the dogs are there and calm, then everything is ok. This method has helped immensely

I know I must have hallucinated at some point. I woke up felling like the blanket was crushing and strangling me. I wanted to scream for help but I couldn't. I have no idea if I was awake or hallucinating ir some combination at this point. I was so happy when I got my body back.

If you find your self in paralysis, screw up your face and squint your eyes hard, youll have the ability to do this, give it a few seconds and youll wake up immediately, spring up out of bed and turn on the lights or go to the bathroom, you wanna make sure your body is back in full control, your heart is gonna be pounding from the fright of being stuck but itll def do the trick most if not all of the time

The tears started flowing by the end especially when she said she was so relived because she thought there was just something wrong with her. :-(. I was about 17 when I first noticed issues. I wasn’t diagnosed until I was 40. Spent the majority of my life not only beating myself up, but allowing others to as well. Hearing so called loved ones diagnosis of “lazy” , “depressed”, and even “bipolar” created a life long internal struggle. I didn’t believe I was any of those, but what if I was and just didn’t want to accept it? the actual diagnosis has been very emotional, and hard. From just processing so many years of self doubt to now the health issues from the abuse I put my body through just to try to function “normally” is catching up to me.

I feel the need to add, as a narcoleptic, there’s really good medication out there for narcolepsy. If you think you have it, say something to a doctor. Medication changed my life. Also the symptoms go beyond just sleep attacks. It’s also the brain fog, chronic fatigue, and difficulties processing.

I think there is definitely a way to fight it off. I can work in the O.R. for 6 hours straight standing without falling asleep and even do long shifts with no sleep for almost 2 days. Yet other days after waking up from a night's sleep I feel incredibly sleepy every few hours, even while doing active engaging tasks and will sleep right away if there is a bed. So in my opinion from experience the brain has multiple mechanisms of keeping wakefulness besides the known route which narcolepsy affects (i.e. Orexin pathway)
I do a lot of "mind over matter" (concentration exercises, deep meditation, breath control etc) activities so probably explains how I manage to stay awake despite the condition. Also when I was very young, before the condition started, I developed an aversion to sleeping outside the usual bedtime. Although I would sleep a lot during the day, I was gradually developing the mental fortitude to dislike sleeping during the day. I have no doubt in the power of the mind to override the function of the brain, my life at least is proof of that.

    • @Warmishcookies
      @Warmishcookies 7 років тому +33

+ TheVariableConstant well clearly you weren't recently diagnosed with Narcolepsy. Some people are lucky enough to 'grow out of' the condition as they age. Also it sounds like you simply had the normal pubescent sleepiness, but it stopped as you grew up. also sure, you might be able to work long shifts, but a nurse's schedule allows for a lot more catch up sleep than the vast majority of 9-5, 5 day a week jobs. I really am frustrated at your lack of empathy with people who have this condition, especially considering that you have a medical background. I'm sure your colleagues in polysomnography would love to educate you further.

    • @TheVariableConstant

Hmm point taken, but it wasn't childhood sleepiness. I can still spend most of my day now sleeping. But when I am focused/occupied I can stay awake throughout the day without issue. Like I said, it wasn't something that passed away by itself, I did and still do a lot of concentration exercises. I wished I knew about this earlier and that's the main reason I was mentioning it, to help others know it isn't hopeless or need medication forever...maybe I just have a mild version or maybe my mental "gymnastics" has been helpful.
Do you have narcolepsy with or without cataplexy?

    • @Warmishcookies
      @Warmishcookies 7 років тому +7

TheVariableConstant My bad. I jumped to the conclusion that you were one of those people who shouts 'Get a job' at people who rely on state assistance due to them having any number of handicaps (in the U.S. it is very common. People even say that to military veterans who were injured due to their service). My doctor seems to think I have cataplexy. So far my friends and family don't believe that I do because I don't do the sitcom type 'exaggerated falling to the ground at random' thing. It's actually kinda sad how little most people know about narcolepsy.

Ah I understand. Well I would suggest an EEG sleep study. If needed, for your family to better understand the situation.
The brain is a complex arena. Hopefully more progress is made in our understanding as more research in this field grows.
If you are interested, you can consider reducing refined carbs consumption, diet can be immerse helpful, not a cure though. Also meditation, recording your progress over time. For a few mins, you could sit as still as possible with your eyes closed, maybe for 5 mins initially and extending the duration gradually every few days up to 30 mins or more. For the first few days, it's ok to think about anything you want while you are still with your eyes closed, but after about a week of mastering that you could progress to thinking about only 1 thing. Eventually you would aim to sit still with your eyes closed while thinking of nothing for 15 mins everyday...without falling asleep!
This mental exercises, in my opinion, has been extremely helpful for my condition.
May you find the vitality you seek!

  • @jessirose

I have idiopathic hypersomnia, so it is excessive and constant sleepiness. I can fight to stay awake, sort of, but it's hard because the sleep doctor thinks its depression, and won't help me. I have told him I am sad because I am tired, not tired because I am sad.
I don't know how falling asleep in 6 minutes, not getting homework done, losing the bond with my sister, watching as my friends grow distant, and finding a corner to sleep in at family gatherings while my family knows not to talk to me, and instead talks to my sister, to the point where I hear "oh you have two daughters?" said to my mom, is not enough to help me.
I feel that living with this and not living isn't any different because of how much I sleep, and how much I miss out on.
I hope everyone with any sleep problem gets the help they need. ♡

Jessie Rose ...I also have hypersomnia. Mine really isn’t “idiopathic” as I’ve had 6 strokes caused by Moyamoya Disease. The brain damage caused issues in the speech center of the brain & also the sleep center. The worst part of hypersomnia is being told that I am just lazy. And that everyone gets tired...right, but not everyone gets so exhausted that they sleep while standing up cooking dinner! Thankfully I was put on Adderall which gave me back my life! I don’t have to worry about falling asleep behind the wheel anymore, so that is huge.

I also have been diagnosed with idiopathic hypersomnia and i honestly believe that the doctor misdiagnosed me. I have been living with narcolepsy since i was 16/17. I am now 27 and it's so frustrating. Luckily for me i have a very strong support system and all of my family and close friends have accepted me as i am and just understand that i absolutely have no control. I take medications to help me stay awake so i can go about my days as normally as i possibly can, but i have also had to accept that my "normal" is functioning like a typical non-narcoleptic person trying to function if they havent slept in a day or two. So i feel your pain and hope you find something that makes your life easier.

You can be completely normal one day and then a flu virus can invade your cells. Start making copies of itself with the wrong information your brain receptors need to keep producing hypocretin.

I was diagnosed in 2012 (it is now 2019) but looking back it is clear I've had it since childhood. However, I was labeled as "lazy" "unmotivated" "lacking effort". Those labels have haunted me to this day, even tho I graduated from a nursing program in the top 5% of ALL campuses while raising 2 kids, taking care of a house, pets AND a dying husband. Yet after my husband died 4 years ago, my autoimmunes flared and at 35 have made me disabled. Narcolepsy and type 1 diabetes (which is what killed my husband) play off each other and they make the other worse. Its a vicious cycle! And humiliating to live with...especially in a world that lacks empathy and compassion.

I was just recently diagnosed with narcolepsy (without cataplexy) and it is such a relief to know that there is a legitimate reason for my constant sleepiness. It's really wonderful to see Liza's case because mine is almost identical (other than when I get really sleepy during activities I can still stay awake, though I'm really foggy and more concentrated on when I can sleep next). I'm a bubbly, energetic female teen who also feels left out of social activities because I'm too busy sleeping. So many people say it's just me being a teenager, and it's really frustrating that most people don't understand this disease (though I don't like calling it a disease). However, I'm so glad I know now what is "wrong" with me so I can conquer- or at least accept- this. It would be great if I could contact Liza somehow; I think it would be really nice to meet someone else with narcolepsy, let alone another energetic teen who knows how debilitating it is.

I just got diagnoses with narcolepsy w/o cataplexy last week. I've had almost constant daytime sleepiness for almost a decade (now 27, so since high school), as well as multiple awakenings per night and extremely vivid, frequently lucid dreams. It was never enough to overwhelm me, since I graduated college without too much struggle. However, I felt it got worse in the 5 years since I graduated though, and I guessed it could be narcolepsy because of the vivid dreams and my seeming lack of boundary between waking and REM sleep. Got a consultation, then a study... sure enough, it was narcolepsy. Color me surprised.
I feel very lucky, because I do not have to contend with the cataplexy or sleep attacks that some do. My problem is primarily daytime sleepiness, which seems to be responding to armodafinil at the moment. My heart goes out to those who have to contend with the more difficult symptoms... I can't even imagine.

I have narcolepsy too without the cataplexy, this condition is with-out question dreadful. I've had it for over 30 years and it has made my life so incredibly difficult. I have extremely severe clinical depression and anxiety as well coupled with a damaged spine and arthritis. Trying to explain this to people is impossible. Most have no idea what it's like.
For me, I'm tired all day and when I get incredibly tired/sleepy I literally can't think, my eyes get all watery and I have to sit down, I usually fall asleep but over the years I have been able to fight it off to some degree, shaking my head, trying to do something, although I feel sick when I do, but it can happen at any time, sometimes it can happen while people are around me and not even notice as it is more an inward reaction, I just blank out of the conversation. I have even fallen asleep with food in my mouth and upon waking, continue eating. Really strange and fortunately I've never chocked.
Narcolepsy can be brought on by boredom, familiar long time surroundings, emotional stress, reading, watching tv, but stress or excitement is a big trigger for me.

I’ve been late to work half days before waking up and letting myself accept my boss to beat me emotionally down and getting the “if this continues I have to let you go speeches” when I fight to sleep and when I finally do it’s too deep and too long. Status cataplecticus is another form of cataplexy with narcolepsy, which is what I have. S.C. is an extremely rare and severe form of rebound cataplexy. Meaning, rather than having one cataplexy attack, one which lasts from a few seconds to several minutes, and then is followed by the rapid return of normal muscle tone and function. The sufferer instead has a string of continuous overlapping cataplectic attacks, attacks that look like one considerably long attack, one that lasts for several hours. Also in the most severe of cases like mine, if the trigger causing the attacks isn't addressed and/or removed, the paralysis of status cataplecticus may last for as long as even days too. We are all so different, and the medical community is finally discovering that not everyone’s symptoms fit so neatly into just two little narcolepsy “with or without” cataplexy boxes.

So... I've been having similar sleep problems for years, but I can't afford appointments. Not too long ago though my friend suggested I look into narcolepsy, because I kept telling them about my sleep issues. I don't know if I'm narcoleptic, I'm probably just always tired; but it's a struggle to get work done, stay in a class I really love being in, and not get myself into accidents while driving by myself. Recently, I think I'm experiencing sleep paralysis too. I feel too weak to move when getting sleepy or waking up, even when I hear my alarm go off, and I end up sleeping past that, and missing meetings... it's such a pain. I don't know why so many people think sleep issues are funny... 😶

Holy crap is she fortunate to not only be treated so young, but have a good doctor and be treated with dignity.
I can't say that for myself. I'm 33, a single mom. I've been dealing with fibro for as long as I can remember (severe IBS that caused hospitalization for the first time at 4 yrs old, yes I remember that vividly, among other things), I am in so much pain sometimes I wish I was dead. And my "normal" is a level 7 pain. Always. I'm never pain free (that's my hip/back unless my ibs kicks in, then I'm on the floor and when it stops I pass out).
I just now at 33 got diagnosed with fibro under much scrutiny. Now that I was finally allowed to speak in terms of pain (which isn't really managed, I'm on lyrica, I'm not ok), I wanted to bring up the severe fatigue, narcolepsy and insomnia (I was always shut down when mentioning more than 1 symptom at a time, "pick 1, that's all we have time for").
The narcolepsy has been so bad lately. I was sitting there yesterday, drinking a hot coffe and boom, offline, almost dumped the coffee into my lap. Driving... can be extremely rough depending on the day. However, even though my status quo is being exhausted, I can't sleep (no I don't simply doze off because I'm tired due to the insomnia).
I average about 8 hours of sleep in 3 nights. I told my doctor and was begging for help because as a single parent to a preschooler, it's not ok to fall asleep while watching them. And I can't do this anymore. I feel like I'm losing it because everything is coming together so badly.
I was told to set an alarm on my phone. That was her solution. And to drink coffee.
I have barely any functionality left beyond getting out of bed, which is a HUUUGE struggle, I don't really eat anymore, I'm at this point severely depressed and even though I'm not really suicidal, I wish I was dead every single day because I can't take anymore. And the pain. Always there. I also wake up gasping for air sometimes on those rare occasions when I sleep. They just now ordered a sleep study, but until then I guess it's 🤞🏻 I can make it. I've been ignored for longer than I care to say. I have no hope left at this point. The treatment I have received from the many doctors I've seen so far has been horrible.
I would really love to know how others do it... actually get help from their doctors that is. I have yet to experience actual humane treatment (there's a lot of things that have been done that I didn't mention, that are at best negligent at worst extreme malpractice). Some people are just really lucky and don't know it.

btw i don't have narcolepsy/never been diagnosed, i have a host of other illnesses that are likely to blame for my tiredness.
i have constant tiredness to the point its painful- but its hard because i can't always fall asleep. but then sometimes i can't stop falling asleep. there have been days where i won't exactly fall asleep, but i'll zone out while being fully aware and i cant move easily and my eyes twitch like REM sleeping. its not often, only once a month, but its scary when it does. my eyes won't open, i suddenly zone out while walking and wake up just in time to stop myself from falling, etc. but the sleeps only last for a few seconds. i also don't dream anymore (i attribute that to medication i'm taking for my mental illness as i used to have extremely vivid dreams- lucid dreams, in colour, with sound and touch and even taste and smell, as well as daydreams with the same qualities and i was a maladaptive daydreamer, meds stopped all of that). i assume its chronic fatigue, either due to anemia, mental illness, or chronic pain. but i do feel the struggle of constantly on the edge of passing out and no matter how much you sleep (like... 12 hours at night and 4 hours during the day as i do) you are never any less tired. it hurts. 💞

I don’t have any experience with cataplexy but I’ve had issues with falling asleep randomly since kindergarten. I have dozed off while driving, while at work, while standing in a line, and my mom used to joke that I had “carcolepsy” because I always fall asleep while riding in a car or on an airplane. The drowsiness is so intense, there’s no way to fight it off. Especially in the afternoon or evening. I also frequently get sleep paralysis which, not until recently, I realized isn’t as common for people as I thought because I’ve always had it. I just wish there was an easy way to get some sort of diagnostic test.

I’m happy that she got diagnosed so quickly and she had a doctor that can help her. I got narcolepsy when I was in yr5 but nobody knew what was it… I never told this to anyone but this really changed my life and me as a person. You really had no control over this once you start to fell asleep. I really thought i was my problem, and I missed out so much because i slept in almost all my classes and exams and even when i get home I just slept on the sofa until 8pm. I kept seeing different doctors but most of them actually thought it was a growth spurt… anyways If someone who also has narcolepsy are reading this, it is really not your problem and go see doctor and take medications!! Medications really saved me and now I can almost live as a normal person. Also narcolepsy isn’t just falling asleep in class (since most people get it when they’re teenagers), but you also fall asleep when you walk and do exercises and IT’S VERY DANGEROUS if no one is around to take care of you. I fell asleep even when I swim and do horse riding so BE CAREFUL, always make sure there’s someone around you to help if something happen when you do sport.

i honestly believe that i have some level or narcolepsy, and it's kinda like this girl. i really wanna go to a doctor about it, but my mom doesn't think that i'm suffering and that it's not important. i'm sleeping at least 16 hours a day if i don't have school, and if i do have school, i get like 6 hours at night and then i come home and take a 6-7 hour nap. i can't wait until i'm 18 and i can go to a doctor without a parent

I'm over here complaining about deformed arms and how it makes my life suck since I get tired too easily to do things. Then I watch videos like this and am glad I have nothing wrong with my brain, anymore. I used to have seizures that caused paralysis like the girl explains, and it was odd just laying there and having my sisters poke at me and yell at me to quit playing around. So, I know this can't be fun for her. I really hope they can help find a cure for this.

I have narcolepsy I was diagnosed at 10 I’m now 19 it’s still a little hard sometimes. I take Concerta to stay awake only last 12 hours. It’s hard tho to fall asleep at night because I’m always hungry due to the Concerta. But I’m ok it’s nice that I have my family and friends to help me through it.

The worst thing about this condition is that you will hear things from people like ''yeah Im tired as wel''. Thinking they suffer as much. Many people even try to teach me about how to sleep better. Even though they just want to help me, people should know that someone with narcolepsy is already a sleep expert and had experimented with blue light, temperature, sound, food, caffeine, alcohol, sleep schedules, relaxation, medication, matress, light therapy and more.

I think I might have this. I also have RLS, and on the nights my RLS is minimal, I fall asleep really fast. Also, when I am at work (janitor), after a while, it's a struggle to stay awake after a while, no matter how much sleep I get. The other day, I was trying to get a job done quickly so I could take my car to a mechanic, and, all of a sudden, I felt really sleepy while I was cleaning a laundry room. The next thing I knew, I heard a noise behind me, and I woke up a bit confused to find that I was mopping the floor and had cleaned all of the machines. I remembered cleaning one, but not the rest. I also remember sweeping or readying my mop. I also have trouble with waking up, and my fiance says I talk back to him when he tries to talk me out of bed. He tells me that he often tries multiple times to wake me up and leaves when I say something, thinking I am awake. Now, he just lets the alarm clock blare across the room until I wake up, and sometimes, it takes a few minutes for me to wake up if I'm really deeply asleep. Oftentimes, I feel drunk when I have to get up to use the bathroom in the middle of the night (I have OAB), or, if I have to get up quickly in the morning. I have also had trouble with sleep paralysis with leg movements while I'm falling asleep or waking up (helped by self-hypnosis), as well as sleep walking. I've woken up in my bathroom, and I have talked to people who weren't there in the middle of the night, thinking they were real. I should also mention that I had brain surgery for my Chiari Malformation several years ago. I also have episodic migraines, Sensory Processing Disorder, ADHD, and Bipolar Disorder. I'm so tired of this. I don't know what to do. . .

Sleep paralysis is scary, but have you ever had hallucinations? I usually get them after waking while I get sleep paralysis while falling asleep but those can be switched around. I once had a hallucination that there was this old, scary looking woman at my bedroom door who I could tell was staring at me, even though her face was completely black. When the sleep paralysis broke the hallucination ended but I still yelled “get out of my room!” And threw my pillow at the door and actually woke up my sis who was in the other room.

vbabyface94 bourget I don't think you should view a diagnosis as a condemnation. You should be thankful that you can now apply a label to the condition you experience so that you can learn more about it. Labels do not devalue you in any way. If I wanted, I could probably diagnosis you and everyone else in the world with plenty of personality conditions. Diagnoses and labels don't change who you are... unless you let them. You're still the same person, only now eqquiped with a term to describe a very specific portion of yourself. If you viewed a diagnosis as such, I don't see why you would have trouble accepting it.

I likely had narcolepsy since I was in middle school. I slept in classes often and sometimes would fall asleep suddenly and hit my head on the desk. I'd have trouble sleeping at night and struggle to get up in the morning. It wasn't until I turned 22 in January 2018 that I was officially diagnosed after I began experiencing more frequent micro sleeps while driving after I transferred to a job 45 mins from home. I never even knew what narcolepsy was until I brought up my symptoms to my PCP and he referred me to a Neurologist.
I've been on Modafinil for a year and rarely experience micro sleeps now. I was lucky to have a mild case but it's scary to think that I've gotten worse over the years and may get worse still.

I have idiopathic hypersomnia. It is similar, but I don't just fall asleep while doing physical activities. I want to, but can somehow fight it. I have had sleep paralysis, and very very vivid dreams, and nightmares. It's so hard to stay awake, and the doctor doesn't want to help because he thinks its the depression.
I am sad because I am tired, not tired because I am sad.
I never have high energy because of how sleepy I am every day, and it's horrible because I cannot escape it, and I miss out on so much life, and what I have is rare, so its hard for that reason too.
When I took the test I fell asleep in 6 minutes, but I just want help.

  • @anonanon7743

I was diagnosed in 2013 in my mid fifties after having tests. From my early twenties I had everything but cataplexy. About 5 years later a consultant at my hospital decided it wasn't narcolepsy because there was no cataplexy. I went for another sleep test and prior to that wore an actigraph watch which showed I woke about 27 times at night (I was unaware of those awakenings). The poly somnography test results showed nothing unusual the second time - the first time they showed I fell asleep straight away and four minutes later had a dream. I know this condition can be variable. My medication (Modafinil) was stopped. This was just before lockdown. There was no follow up, no advice on how I was going to stay awake (especially for my job) - nothing. After a couple of months of the most terrible dragging down fatigue and struggling to stay awake I begged my GP for help. The medication was re-prescribed. Due to the consultant's hostile attitude at my hospital I'm now looking to find another hospital miles away wondering how on earth I'm going to get there and the worrying thought that I'll most likely fall asleep on the train - all because the consultant at my local hospital doesn't fully understand narcolepsy even though he tells me he is the leading narcolepsy expert in Europe (I spoke to someone at Narcolepsy UK) they had never heard of him but they knew most of the consultants at the hospital where the sleep studies were carried out). I'm wondering if other people with narcolepsy are referred to a neurologist or in my case referred to a respiratory consultant and not passed to the Neurology Department.

Newbies, One thing many of you may not be prepared to face, in addition to the diagnosis and all that comes with that, are people that lack understanding, compassion, empathy & patience. I've been blessed to never been shamed, but I think this is rare. In the beginning compassion abounds, but as years pass patience withers. You didn't choose this, but you can certainly choose who you allow to surround you if/when you are grown. I will say that my children' have never known a mom that wasn't sleepy. I would notice them becoming indifferent to my struggles as this is all they knew, so extra time/attention/ explainations/education and extra understanding/patience on my party was necessary during their formative years. I also found myself apologizing that they didn't have a normal mom, b/c I would give anything except them up to change that. I can't recommend that you do the same. Looking back, my apologies could have had an opposite effect than I intended. One is, now, 24 and the other is 16. It still breaks my heart for them, but the I'm sorries are now I wishes. Prayers to all of you.
