I have narcolepsy and this video has been so helpful. When I tell people I have a sleeping disorder that makes me spontaneously fall asleep they look skeptical; rather than boring them with a definition that could be illegitimate, I send them to this video. It's funny, informative, and legitimizes the issue, so thank you.
I have narcolepsy and I love this video. Not many people know what narcolepsy is, so when I tell people I have it I tell them to watch this--it's a mix of information and humor, and it doesn't bore people. It makes us feel sad and wanting to laugh, much like the disease. Thanks for posting
most likely the dog was still awake when the attacks happen. its cataplexy part of the illness i think. excitement triggers it. laughing does in most humans with the illness. i deal with the same issues. im fully awake when i fall but i just cant move or talk to say different. so most will think im knocked out :P
tallladyjay It is very disruptive and intrusive, but luckily like the video said, it isn't particularly painful or unpleasent. So while he needs some extra help and someone to make sure he doesn't fell or something, at least it doesn't inherently cause him any discomfort.
Most of the time in this video the dog doesn't struggle with tiredness, but he is happy, which triggers a cataplexy... However, people (and dogs) are fully awake during a cataplexy... Just in a few cases a very long lasting cataplexy can eventually lead to someone becoming tired... Mixing up tiredness and cataplexy is a common misconception about narcolepsy...
This is EXACTLY what I was going to comment. The excitement this dog feels causes cataplexy as any strong emotions do. There are so many videos on the news and UA-cam misinforming people. There are people without cataplexy with Narcolepsy. I can handle sleep attacks and falling asleep randomly. I do not like laughing with my children and keeling over. If you notice that dogs eyes are open. Not sleeping.
Gloria Jean Yeah I know right! I am actually someone without cataplexy, though I might now be showing symptoms,,, But yeah i honestly wish there wasn't so much misinformation about narcolepsy! I try finding out more about it but its so hard at times because of stuff like this!
Ame Exactly! I'm sorry you are beginning to have signs of cataplexy, I did not recognize it when I first had the signs - I put it down to clumsiness! I sure know differently now. Searching forums with other people with N+C has helped me learn. I wish you the best!
i would cry every time and every day if it was my little puppy. I feel so bad for him and his mommy ... look how sad she is when the dog can't make it up onto the sofa... People can suffer from that too... don't think any of those how think it is soooo funny would still be laughing if it was them falling asleep where ever they stand or walk ...
He wasn't sleeping. This report is confusing narcolepsy and cataplexy. This dog's symptoms are cataplexy triggered by emotions. It's like sleep paralysis while ones awake.
Pixel Master35* ummmmm. They do, depending on the person and what sets off their cataplexy, like if a fire alarm went off they may become scared and the excitement would cause them to lose control of some muscles. For some it’s mild and is the face, for others it’s more extreme and results in total muscle control loss in their legs or whole body.
What's making him fall over is cataplexy that often accompanies narcolepsy. His extreme emotions aren't putting him to sleep, they're making his muscles lax which is what happens with cataplexy in varying degrees. That's why he gets excited then he starts looking like his legs are giving out, because they are. Though some of it is him also falling asleep I'm sure. And some of it might be sleep paralysis. Poor doggie. #notavet
I just watched about 4 videos of narcoleptic people and this is the only one that made me cry , i don't know why i'm more sympathetic towards pets than i am humans
he is experiencing cataplexy. a symtpom of narcolepsy. he is not actually asleep in most of of the attacks. cataplexy is the sudden temporary loss of muscle tone while remaining conscious usually triggered by emotion
Well no. There's a girl who has narcolepsy and she has her own house and a boyfriend who cares dearly for her. She had to drop out of college though because she couldn't take her online courses but I believe she's doing fine now.
Well, actually I am working and doing well, but I'm seriously concerned about my career. Climbing up the ladder means more and more meetings. However, falling asleep in a meeting is anything but helpful. Especially not if it happens very often. And I'm losing quite some time due to sleep. I probably need 10h per day, which is ca. 2h more than others - every fucking day. That's a lot of lost time... Also I would never be allowed to fly a plane. Has nothing to do with my job, but it's sad anyways...
We fixed a narcoleptic miniature horse with the MRS2000. Look for the Spots N Stripes video. The little guy was fixed in just a day, and then repeated treatments for a couple of weeks . If this is a chronic thing, the little guy may need daily treatments, so you might need to get your own machine....call us for more info.
When Skeeter hits his face on the floor and I hear the noise I just want to kiss him! He looks so soft and cuddly. What a cute dog. I feel sorry for him but at least he has a loving family.
That's cataplexy for sure. I also have narcolepsy 1 and his eyes were almost always open. I'm sure that pup has narcolepsy but what were showing is cataplexy.
Our dog would do that when she got excited. She was diagnosed with a faulty heart valve. It got worse as time went on to the point she couldn't even climb the stairs without passing out. We had to put her to sleep. Very sad.
That dog has a loving family. He isn't sad. If he were, he wouldn't get excited anymore. He's a VERY happy dog, or else he wouldn't get so excited and fall asleep. And the doctor did say he is normal.
Poor dog... he even looks out of his eyes like he's saying 'help me'... I hope they figure out something to help him, and possibly people with the same issue.
In the year 2017, Skeeter gave birth to a single puppy, who too had a condition triggered by excitement. He would grow in size, become stronger, faster, angrier filled with rage, and turning green... he was... HULK-DOG.
This dog is so cute. I know, it's sad that every minute of his life is like this, but every time he falls asleep I want to pick him up, and cuddle him until he wakes up.
i have narcolepsy, what this poor dog has is cataplexy (and so do I) since i was 22, though doctors had no idea what it was till I was 26. My husband saw a late night info commercial on TV for Narcolepsy, but Doctors wouldnt hear of the patient making the diagnosis. But it was, and i'm 50 now--been a real life changer. 5 mile radius limit is all i can safely drive. (I know my limits)
The antidepressants treat cataplexy, a feature thats usually associated with narcolepsy. Cataplexy is the loss of muscle tone (collapse) thats usually occurs after a certain stimuli like laughter or excitement as in this case with this dog. These drugs don't make the brain release more serotonin, instead they keep serotonin & norepinephrine around in the body longer.
What you see is not the narcolepsy having an effect on the poodle, it is in fact cataplexy, another condition nearly all narcoleptics have. This is a condition where the body loses control of its muscles due to a strong emotion, whether this be laughter, sadness, excitement etc. The dog is not asleep, it just has no control of its muscles for a few moments.
poor little thing!in the beginning you start to smile but then you see him fighting so hard that it breaks your heart!i hope they find a cure for this!
my papillon had something similar, but it was an autoimmune disease. I dont remember what it was called unfortunately. He ended up passing away at 2 years old
They mentioned that the dog doesn't really like to fall asleep constantly, he struggles to stay awake, so it's not like the dog doesn't care. He probably suffers because of it, and is confused by the situation he found himself in. Putting him down would mean it's finally over for him - he is not human, so he cannot cope with it the way a human would. I would be torn as well, if it was my dog, but I think I would try to decide and make his suffering stop.
I love how you feel for him the entire time, and they they say: "Hes being treated" so you are like yay hes gonna be ok. But NOPE the treatments didnt work. And then to top it all off they end it with "hey remember how sad it was in the video you just watched? Well, it got WORSE."
@HolsG the only reason I said about putting the dog down is because he can't be like other dogs and be free - think about it - He can't eat or drink without having his stomach rubbed, he can't play like other dogs because he would be tired a lot and Its not fair to not be able to play and not feel tired
Did you even watch the clip?? He can't lead a normal life. He can't even EAT without passing out. He can't do anything. He's probably asleep 70% of the time if not more and he doesn't want to be. He doesn't get to have fun because the second he gets excited he passes out. He doesn't get to go on walks and enjoy himself because he'll fall asleep. He misses out on everything. It is sad.
I have narcolepsy and this video has been so helpful. When I tell people I have a sleeping disorder that makes me spontaneously fall asleep they look skeptical; rather than boring them with a definition that could be illegitimate, I send them to this video. the puppy is so cute for wanting to keep trying... i feel so bad for this puppy
that was so sad and so adorable at the same time
He's still a good boy tho :(
The goodest boy 😔

@@WELLINGTON20 Dude, it's a meme.
Poor, Baby. Can they put padding on him for when he slams into the floor. I heard his little head bang when he slumped over and it jarred him up!
"he looks so miserable. he looks like a prisoner in his own body."
:( when i heard that i wanted to cry.
"And there he goes! Out cold!" I admittedly laughed at this.
wtf is up with the upbeat music to this?
32deej loll I was gonna mention that! And the endless puns and upbeat tone of voice
Shut up it’s a damn dog
poor doggy

poor baby :/
That's kind of sad if you really think about it. It's cute the first few seconds, but then you start feeling really bad for the baby.
I have narcolepsy and I love this video. Not many people know what narcolepsy is, so when I tell people I have it I tell them to watch this--it's a mix of information and humor, and it doesn't bore people. It makes us feel sad and wanting to laugh, much like the disease. Thanks for posting
I'll have to admit that the condition is sad, but at the same time the pooch looks do freaking adorable! I just want to hug it :)
I know I shouldn't laugh but the news announcer is so extra Lmao

Cataplexy was my same thought.
It’s partly cataplexy and may I ask do u have narcolepsy as I do and I’ve never spoke to anyone or met anyone else who has it.
I'm glad you're educated on this issue because it's really scary..
Cheyenne Eagles I do, I haven’t spoken to anyone else who does either.

I thought that was the metal ring on his collar that hit the floor. Ugh. Wish I didn't go back and look. Poor baby
Poor little dog, it's a good job he's not mine, I have narcolepsy too! We'd just constantly be sleeping :'D
Me too lol
its sad...but you gotta admit a little funny. and very cute!
He's the cutest thing i've ever seen!!! God bless him and his family!!!

As a 16 year old with narcolepsy and cataplexy, this was heartbreaking to watch. That poor dog.

He wasn't sleeping. This report is confusing narcolepsy and cataplexy. This dog's symptoms are cataplexy triggered by emotions. It's like sleep paralysis while ones awake.
He's even got the cataplexy aspect... that's something.
Imagine if people did this. That’d be weird in a job interview.
Pixel Master35* ummmmm. Good thing most job interviews aren’t that stressful though. If they struggle with feeling nervous though it may trigger more easily.
This breaks my heart. So sad. I wish the best for this poor little guy.
I am a tv anchor woman. I show no signs of caring that the condition got worse and happily announce the next story will be about the tallest dog.
What's making him fall over is cataplexy that often accompanies narcolepsy. I didn't know whether to laugh or cry, so i did both.

That's cataplexy for sure. I also have narcolepsy 1 and his eyes were almost always open. I'm sure that pup has narcolepsy but what were showing is cataplexy.

haha my pit bull, dozer also has narcolepsy but we give him medicine to help him out. he only passes out when he’s super excited

What an adorable dog! His curly white fur reminds me of a lamb. And sheeps are often associated with dreams.
I know this is bad but this had me dying at the beginning xD
The way he just wants struggles to stay awake after being exited like when he was trying to get on the couch was cute but sad
"His narcolepsy is triggered by excitement" Tell me the biggest nerf to a living species other than that.
Is bad that I found that hysterical? It was just so funny.
Canine narcolepsy has been found to be common now, especially in poodles, dachshunds, labs, and a few other breeds.
The antidepressants treat cataplexy, a feature thats usually associated with narcolepsy. He’s so cute. I want to cry :( cutest dog ever
Stop talking about my girlfriend like that
This has to be excruciatingly frustrating. For the owners and for the dog.
They need to put plush rugs in every room so the poor puppy doesn't get hurt slamming his face on the hard floor.
wow. i thought my Narcolepsy was bad
I love how you feel for him the entire time, and they they say: "Hes being treated" so you are like yay hes gonna be ok. But NOPE the treatments didnt work. And then to top it all off they end it with "hey remember how sad it was in the video you just watched? Well, it got WORSE."
aw, the dog is so cute. hope they find a cure soon
@HolsG the only reason I said about putting the dog down is because he can't be like other dogs and be free - think about it - He can't eat or drink without having his stomach rubbed, he can't play like other dogs because he would be tired a lot and Its not fair to not be able to play and not feel tired
