  • Why OBS Ford trucks don't last more than 400,000 miles. It turns out that's not actually the case. OBS Ford's do indeed last more than 400k miles, it's merely a limitation of their odometers that you don't see them with more miles.

By my estimations anyone following the orders of any group filled with dishonest, thieving, murderous, pedophiles, has no mind to begin with?

      I had a 1995 7.3 & I could tell the truck had a lot of miles on it, it had 373k on it & still ran great. The moment I found out about this I was sad, because of that I drove the crap out of it & later sold it a year later & got a 93 250 the same truck except in the 200k range not 300k cuz there’s no telling how many miles are on it.
      I specifically wanted a truck that didn’t have 300k on it just because of this, so I know for sure it has never rolled over & that I know how many are actually on it.
      Now the 95 has probably never rolled over, I can say this because I changed out the old factory IPR, CPS & a few other original parts including the starter that was original. The transmission shifted pretty good as well.

      @@jonathanharvey6196, unless you look under the hood for the original parts like IPR, fuel lines, & CPS. in my case my 95 had the original CPS in it cuz it was hard to get out & it had tons of dirt on it, the transmission was also in good shape since it might've been changed/rebuilt around 250k. it also had new injectors & need head gaskets.
      I think mine had 400k even tho the odometer said 376K, but you truly will never know.
      that's why with these its best to get a truck with 200k on it or in that range so you know for sure it hasn't rolled over, I later sold the 1995 PSD & got a 1993 7.3 idi w the zf5 with 210k & shes by baby.

    • @DeusTex-Mex
      @DeusTex-Mex 4 роки тому +3

      It's not as common, but in fleets the 5.4 and 4.6's lasted way longer than you'd expect given how many flaws they seemed to have. I've seen plenty in the 400k range. But most people aren't comfortable owning a vehicle with that many miles, anyway - every component of the car has usually exceeded its expected service life at that point.

    It's a limitation of the EEPROM storage(only has 256bits) and PSOM IC programming Ford chose to do. After 400K miles it goes back to 300K instead of going back to 0 miles to keep Odometer fraud occurring. It would be easy to "roll up" the odo and say this vehicle ONLY has xxx miles.

      My '89 5.0 is the same. I've seen it roll over twice personally, and that was less than 10 years ago, which puts it at a minimum of 340K. Upper limit I give it is 540K, because it was "on its last leg" when I got it (about 12 years ago).
      I do know that the engine has not been rebuilt in any way, aside from the valve cover gaskets and water pumps that I replaced, as well as some sensors and minor things here and there. It burns no oil, feels like it has as much power as new, and still passes smog in CA.
      The AOD transmission is well over 300K. It was replaced early in the truck's life due to an accident that unknowingly broke the trans cooler lines.

    I bought an old OBS 7.3 & 4000 miles later & I love it! It’s got 370K on the clock, some might say it’s rolled over. But I changed out the factory CPS that was defective. The IPR & a few other parts that die around that time period.
    So I’ve come to the conclusion it’s 370K original miles.
    I didn’t hear about this fenominon till I met a guy on Craiglist for some parts & he told me about that.
    Then I looked it up & sure enough he’s right.
    Gosh Dammit ford! I knew ford mechanics were nuts but this is rediculous.
    So I’ve have no idea how many miles are on the truck. It could have 370K, 470K, 570K, 670k, it could have 1,070,000K for all I know.
    With the 7.3 you just don’t know unless you get into it & look at the wearable parts & if they’ve been changed or not.

      The ribbon cable probably doesn't even have enough pins in it in order to control that extra segment, But especially the way the groupings for pin 24 and 25 to activate the segments there's no way of only lighting up the top bars for seven only, they put these odometers in almost every Ford vehicle in the 90s make some sense that the engineers only worried about getting to that 400,000 mark being as most vehicles would be mechanically totaled hopefully before they had 200k, in the eyes of the manufacturer

      IrishSavage87, he’s talking about logging the millage w oil change intervals w dates, & notating when it rolled over. There’s a guy w a 01 7.3 that has 1,000,000 miles on it. The odometer reads 999,999.9 w the trip ometer the remaining millage plus some.
      I’ve seen stories of guys w the 7.3s whose owners have owned the truck before 300k, & they say it’s original. Then would proceed to say that it’s rolled over nearly twice since then.
      These ole 7.3s both IDIs & PSDs can go well beyond a million miles IF maintenance has been done to em.
      If you do just oil changes, & fix leaks on the engine, then replace injectors every 250k that engine won’t die! 7.3 HEUI injectors are insanely tough as nails. I used to own one & beat the crap out of it while doing proper maintenance.
      The engine has no blow by at all, & it read 370k. The trans shifted well, so if the trans was replaced at 250-270k since the trans was fairly new it would shift decent.
      That old truck started right up darn near every single time I asked it to do so.
      Just don’t feed em Veg oil even at a 50/50 mix! That’s how u kill a 7.3.

    You should look at that control board. Many times there is an EE prom on the board that stores the mileage for the display. If you find a chip like this you could possibly read it with a dedicated chip reader and interpolate the code into the mileage. A data sheet on the memory chip will usually explain how it is coded. There is also a main computer that should write the total mileage to its memory as well. These codes can be read by dealers when connected to the OBD2 connector under the dash.
    If the cluster has its own code you could write a declaration statement of the mileage on the odometer and take it to a notary with the truck so they can certify the mileage. At this point if you have the proper equipment for reading and writing to memory chips you could effectively "zero" out the odometer but To CYA WHEN YOU SELL THE TRUCK YOU MUST PRESENT THE DECLARATION TO THE BUYER. A this point you would add the mileage between the document and the reset odometer to obtain the actual mileage.

    You are so wrong. I just sold my 1995 F350 it had 756,223. It has had 4 transmissions. Never had to change the engine. The engine had oil &filter every 3000 miles. The rear differential oil was changed every 10,000 miles. The transmission fluid & filter every 20,000 miles. The transmission issues were all torque convertor failures till i replaced the last one with a billet unit.
    The trucks last issue was a wiring harness to the idm and the steering column was work out for 6th time and i was not investing anymore into it, so i sold it.

    I've seen this come up before and it was determined that the upper left segment is non existent. I honestly can't figure out the reason behind that decision. It not a limitation of electronics as you can make anything you want given the proper circuit design. I don't see it being a flaw or oversight either, since it would have been a very simple fix.
    I had a 1996 Grand Am that I got over 1 million KM. But Pontiac was gone and there was nobody left to care about such a feat.

    • @jonmiguel
      @jonmiguel 3 роки тому +1

      The earliest digital dashes (the ones with the large digital speed display) had a similar problem. The left-most "number" only had the two segments needed to display a "1". You'd hit "199999.9" only for it to roll back to "100000.0" I put it down to simple cost cutting because (for example) 50 cents saved on a single unit times 800K units = $400K in additional profit.

    • @FerralVideo
      @FerralVideo 2 роки тому

      I saw that during the "startup test" in the first ten seconds of the video!
      I agree with Jon, it's probably just that tiniest bit of extra profit.
      The Toyota Prius has a similar problem, being an early sample of a gasoline hybrid, the electronics take some of the load off the engine, allowing the vehicles to last longer than they otherwise would.
      The odo will just "die" at 399,999 and the display will stop incrementing. But you can still read the actual mileage with a scan tool.

The only things I replaced on my truck was the starter, the power steering magnesium, and the front fuel pump but other than that mostly was just simple maintenance, took the transmission fluid just to get rid of the shuttering it was making and it hasn't had a problem ever since.

    Idling doesn't hurt diesels, cold starts do..that's why they have glow plug issues...EXCELLENT VIDEO...what about adapting a mechanical odo with a speedo cable?? Start it at 4hk...etc...if it can be thought of we can doit...we're americans!

    • @Rnddiesel
      @Rnddiesel  4 роки тому

      It could be done, the main issues would be getting the mechanical odometer to fit in the cluster as it's a bit tight. I'm sure with some material removal and blending it could work. The other thing is finding a reference point for the mechanical odometer. I don't know if there's a port for a mechanical odometer on the transmission or not. It likely depends on what transmission you have. Heck a separate electrically controlled system might be easier as you could use the existing output from the ECM, provided you can figure out how to read that.

    Good work interesting find. Somebody who has worked for Ford knows the why.
    When a 4th generation Ram 2009 thru 2020 Classic hits one million kilometers it stops IE 621,369 miles. I found out when my commercially driven 2014 Ecodiesel hit this number recently and have photo from my truck plus photo of the 6/20/17 Mopar Star case letter that states it. Service advisor complained on my behalf of the faulty design or designed failure if you will. Ram discounted the new gauge cluster price 50 percent for me. I think due to it being a designed failure that Ram should have replaced it for free and paid the dealership for the labor. 🤷‍♂️
