  • This time we rebuild the front springs dampers and Shockmounts for our 1996 Jaguar XK8 (X100) Purdey, using Adamesh lowering springs, Bilstein Dampers and new top strut mounts supplied by British parts.
    Springs. Then we re-fit them to the car.

    Yet another great video John and a job well done. Good to have met up at Gaydon again for a chat. I couldn’t quite see in your video if your wishbone bolt had a ball shaped end. Mine had a ball shaped end which puzzled me until I started hitting it with a hammer to get the bolt back through the bushes. If that was the intensional design of the bolt, it was brilliant idea.

      Not a ball but a reduced diameter dowel on mine. So yes an intentional design to facilitate inevitable hammering 👍

    You make these jobs look easy john. 😂. Good meet up with you on Saturday and I did check out my locking Ariel by taking the battery out and check on the screw in part and that was tight so Iv ordered an other switch from autoreserve. Thanks for that advice. Steve.

    Another perfect video John. It gives home mechanics the encouragement to have a go. As you point out, if you are methodical and take care it really isn't as mysterious as people think.
    Just one comment on the reassembly of the strut for others tempted to have a go- Make sure that the bottom bush is correctly aligned with the three studs on the shock mount so that when fitting it to the car, the bottom bolt lines up with the subframe holes. It can be almost impossible to adjust that once the strut is under compression. Yes, that was discovered by personal experience!
    Those colourful struts were let down by the crusty control arms John but perhaps that's for the future video on bushes and ball joints?

    Another brilliant and helpful video John. In must say though, I found the scuffed front springs deeply offensive when I saw Purdey at the weekend. Nothing for it. You'll have to send them back and do it all again. 😂. Also, I'm intrigued by the drawer marked 'random'. Could be a whole new series in that! I like the chain trick, but for what it's worth, when doing this job I use a trolley jack to support the hub and lower wishbone and position them for refitting. Cheers my friend.

    Bump stop and gaiter assembly should be engaged into the small bell on underside of top mount. You may get away with it floating free down here in Aust., but the damper centre shaft is now exposed to all the English road filth with absolutely no protection. When the top mounts fail, and they will fail, l can help you with a mount kit to last a lifetime, for you free of charge.

    If you are doing your rears after 27yrs I will do mine in another 5yrs or at 200Kmi since I have zero rust and shocks are solid currently at 154Kmi.

    When you re-installed your thin and thick washers onto the upper wishbone fulcrum shaft, did each location point use both a thin and thick washer or was it a different configuration such as two thick washers in one location and two thin washers in the second location? When I removed my upper wishbone, like a dummy, I did not pay attention to the configuration of my thick and thin washers. I'm trying to determine a baseline and your thin, thick washer configuration would be a good place for me to start when reassembling my upper wishbones before I take it in for a front-end alignment. Thank you John for this great video.

    Hello Jon. Do you think there is an ideal orientation for the little dowel on the lower spring cup? Should the end of the spring coils be outboard or inboard, for example?

    • @ToTheGarage
      @ToTheGarage  11 місяців тому

      Another good point. Position the TOP end of coil to be closest to the outside of the car. You should then rotate the lower spring seat dowel to the required position to accommodate this.

    Having done this just two weeks ago, I have some hopefully useful comments. Did you clock each spring relative to the mount and the way it ultimately fits into the shock tower? Wayne Tate has indicated to me that this is critical to getting them into the most neutral position so as not to have a tendency to drive the mount off center. Too bad there was a chunk of video missing at the fitting of the shims. A ratchet strap is probably better than a chain to hold the spindle and hub up. Cheers.

    • @throwback19841
      @throwback19841 Рік тому

      I had a shop rebuild the struts on mine (I fitted them myself though) - they were a bit off when I got them back but it didnt matter, you can rotate them in place. I just took a spare hunk off wood I had, drilled three holes for the top of the strut mount, stood on the bit of wood and then shoved a long 3/8 socket extension through the bottom mount and turned it to the right position like a massive bottle opener. So you dontt need to worry too much about that, in spite of the insane force the springs are applying to the shock you CAN turn them to clock them once assembled. OF course, if you can avoid that in the first place, even better.

      @@throwback19841 Please describe how you oriented them rotationally relative to the car.

    • @throwback19841
      @throwback19841 Рік тому

      @@garyvanremortel5218 you just need the lower fulcrum bolt to line up with 2 of the strut top studs. There's 3 of them so it doesnt matter which ones. I used a ruler placed against two of the studs., drew a line on the wood I was using to hold the strut in place while I turned it indicating where those two studs lined up, and then lined up my ratchet extension I was using as a turning tool in the lower fulcrum with the line. Simple. Also didnt take much force to turn it. If struggling, just use a longer bar to turn the shock with.
      FINAL trick - ALWAYS wait until you have your car back on the ground to tighten up the top nuts on the strut mount studs. That ensures that the car lines itself and the strut up properly before you torque it down. Thats not jaguar specific - do that on any car you change shocks/coilovers on.

      @@throwback19841 Not according to my expert on the subject, Wayne Tate in NC. He specifically states the spring coil ends need to be in a particular rotational position to neutralize the spring thrust axis offset that drives the shock shaft off center in the mount.
