The law needs to be changed in regards to possession and use of illegal fireworks. As it is now there really is no real consequences as the law is so weak. It should be that if law enforcement finds illegal fireworks in your possession or on your property you'll be arrested and face large fines and or jail time. Will this stop illegal fireworks from being sold and bought? Not totally, but it's a step in the right direction to deter it's use. Who set the fuse to the cake isn't known but the whole incident is tragic. These are professional grade very dangerous. Perhaps Honolulu should put on a city fireworks display at sea on barge for everyone to enjoy NYE. Horrific ending to what should have been a fun evening. No matter the law people will continue to pop fireworks next year and the next year and years to come. But the state is the problem. No matter how illegal no matter how much people get hurt over the years people will still find a way to get fireworks. Maybe the state should think about realistic solutions instead of making more laws. Laws are meant to be broken if not it would be a problem. Condolences to the family and ones who got hurt. Safer and better decisions could have prevented this.

Fireworks burst thru the ceiling of car port into two stories of the house causing huge damage. The fire dept was called to scene but the explosives kept them back til they could get close to give assistance to victims and put out any fires at location.

There’s a reason why fireworks are regulated from ignorant people like you. Don’t think sensible people would want yo lose their life or have their house burnt down because someone doesn’t know how to handle fireworks or decides to store loads of them in their home.
People also want unlicensed ghost guns, legal recreational cannabis, legalized gambling, and don’t want to pay taxes. What? Give it to us because you can’t baby proof life?

Call the police if you want but fireworks only last a minute to go off so why bother. All these mainlanders/ foreigners that move here need to know that locals don’t want to be intervened or bothered by outsiders telling them right from wrong or what not to do. They gonna do as they want, plain and simple. Either stay out there way or suffer the consequences. This is coming from a local. Learn how to adjust because fireworks in Hawaii is going no where.
It’s a tradition us locals take serious and regardless of what happens, we know what we are getting ourselves into when we light fireworks. My sincere condolences to the families involved.

track down the suppliers, importing illegal items to an island state, wont be too many suspects. Government, go do your job and track down the suppliers and transport companies for allowing the illegal stuff to get to Hawaii
