Very good video was having problems with car stalling at the light paid out over 1000 dollars to three different mechanics went through 2 fuel pumps map sensor tune up you name it I watched this video 45 min and $5 dollars fixed it myself THANKS MAN wish I could buy you a beer !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks for making this video, it has been very informative! I have a 2005 Cobalt manual that has been having the same surging/lugging and rough idle issues. I'm also putting in some e3 spark plugs in addition to cleaning out the intake.
Just finished cleaning out the throttle body/air intake hose. The MAF was pristine, but the throttle body had massive oil and carbon deposit buildup. It was well worth it to completely remove it and thoroughly clean all the buildup off. The spark plugs were fairly seized in when I was changing them, but the boots were still in good condition. Once everything was connected (including the battery which I took off a few hours ago) the car started up smoothly and idled at 900rpm. The best part was, the check engine light was off after being on for the past 2 days. I don't think new plugs were nearly as critical as cleaning the throttle body, but it should help with overall performance.
Hey man found your video fairly helpful. Found this remedy on a forum to fix my rough engine idle at stopping and starting. Your video helped me out with knowing where sensors and screws were to take apart and procedures on how to clean with battery and connector disconnected from the throttle body prior to cleaning. My constructive criticism is your video was kinda backwards as most people can put things back together once they know how to take it apart. Your video only showed the putting back together and i think showing how to take apart and clean would have been more important. Just in case you wanted to make another video or for your next one ;) thanks for being the most helpful that i could find for this issue, i appreciate you.
yes it did, was easy and worked great. car runs perfect now, no stalling, perfect smooth idle, getting better gas mileage too. and I had a check engine light that would come off and on randomly that never comes on anymore either. everything worked great thanks to this video I knew what I was doing/at least what I was getting in to
@ twistedimagev2 Greetings to you! I've been having idle issues and the check engine light which comes on and off every now and then as well for the past 2 months. It's a 2007 Chevy Cobalt, and whenever I come to halt, the vehicle will turn off, even at times when I put it into reverse gear. My speedometer will also jump up and down at times when the engine is on, but in park. I was wondering if you were having the same issues? I have been employed with a company which is based 45 miles away from my home town for years, and had to resign due to this being my only vehicle and no way to make the trip with these recent problems which arose. Very sad! Thinking about performing this Control Valve removal and cleaning myself very soon. If you can please get back to with issues you had, or any tips on the maintenance you performed, it will be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
Just something I figured out doing this the other day. Disconnect the battery or plug from the throttle body first. If you don't you'll probably get left with a high idle afterwards. I guess the problem works itself out with a relearn, after about 2 weeks of driving. Can also let it run 3 minutes, turn off for 1 minute. Repeat a few times. Those did not work for me. Thought I was left with a 50-150$ PCM Reflash. Cleared codes before the first two methods, no dice. Out of desperation, I tried disconnecting both the - & + battery terminals and clamping them together for 5 minutes. No longer does my car decide to drive forward by itself at red lights or stay at 3k rpm going down a hill with my foot off the pedal. Maybe you'll find this after panicking and it might work for you. Not sure if it was just by coincidence or what. I don't know what all it reset, my TPMS all took a while to come back online though.
Yeah I'm dealing with a few issues including dirty tb, bad vvt solenoids and possible bad maf. I also got a bad ground and im getting the T/C light come on and service traction light. Basically my car is a mess right now. Hopefully get all these issues dealt with this month and get my csr running properly again.
I've done a thorough cleaning and my car is still idling high. It's been about a week now. When I first start it, some days it'll idle properly..... until I touch the gas. That's when it'll spike and shoot straight to 2k then eventually settle to 1500. What's the deal? I'm burning alot off extra gas and it's killing my pockets. My cobalt is an 08 2.2 manual non ss.
When was the last time you checked your charging system could be your battery or alts going so engines idling and reving to charge. Also any codes ?? Could be a 02 sensor or hole in exhaust/leak. Colder months you definitely consume more fuel
My 2009 cobalt LT revs while driving...going between 30 and 40 but only sometimes any idea what this could be? No engine light on or any lights for that matter I just passed inspection a few days ago also.
the same thing is happening to mine any were you able to find the solution? sometimes I'm at a stoplight and it randomly starts revving up to 2000 RPMs
Hi. Thanks for the video. It was a big help to my Chevy cobalt. However, after cleaning the throttle body and putting it back in, my car idles pretty high. Around 13-1500 rpm. I've driven the car around for about 20 minutes or so since doing this and the problem hasn't subsided. Any ideas on what I could do to get my idle back into normal operating range?
all I had to do was let the car idle for 5 mins, turn it off, start it back and let it idle for another 5 mins, then i took it on the freeway where i could run at 60mph+ for about 5 mins and the idle adjusted itself just fine.
Vlopddap another way to discharge the system is remove the positive lead from the battery and hold it to the negative terminal for 10-15 seconds. That will discharge everything.
Does the throttle body sensor position fix the power reduced warning that is common in cobalt cars ? Also, hate those cheap obd scanner. Btw, I have a cheaper one lol.
7 ra Yes I had the that code and P0449 (bad gas cap) I replaced the gas cap and cleaned the throttle body and the Check Engine Light was on for a couple of days and then it went off.
7 ra you pushed the butterfly within your finger too far and now you confused the computer. You can try the relearn procedure. Start the car, idle for 3 minutes, then off for sixty seconds. Start again, idle for 3 minutes, then off again for sixty. One more time, on for three minutes, off for sixty seconds. If that didn't work for you, then drive it for at least 3 minutes, then idle for three, then off for sixty seconds again. If that still didn't work, then drive for about 20 miles on the highway. Accelerating, decelerating, and stopping. Get on the highway, take the second exit. U turn. Get back on, take the first exit, go left, wait at a stop light, u turn, back on the highway... Etc
WARNING: To those that DIY... after a Chevy COBALT throttle body is cleaned, the car's idle will most likely be better BUT also abnormally high (REGARDLESS if you moved the butterfly or not during cleaning). The car's computer will need to relearn a new idle. Moreover, the idle will need to be relearned at a dealership service department or other qualified mechanic. I had this problem and went threw all the on-line suggested methods to make the computer relearn the idle and they did not work. You name it, and I tried it including disconnecting the battery, and various combinations of pumping brakes and or gas peddle, gearing the idle down, driving for miles, etc. The cost to relearn the idle was $135... well worth the money. Car's idle was very smooth and normal after dealer relearned it.

Just did this job, it was very helpful, especially the end about disconnecting the battery and let the idling reset. Thank you for sharing
I followed step by step and fixed my girlfriends car ! Thank you !!!
Thank you so much for this video! Truly a blessing after spending days trying to figure out the problem!
Thank you very much for making this video. It saved me a lot of money and effort.
Why is my car idling at 1 when I stop the car then 3 seconds later it goes to a little above half of 1 is this normal please reply if you can tell me
thank you so much for this video, my car has been idling rough/stalling for two years!! gonna try this tomorrow

That sounds like pretty much all the stuff that goes wrong with cobalts normally. I've done all that too, its easy clap once you know how
Can you open the flap if you’ve disconnected the battery first?

this should definitely help. after my expensive one got stolen i cheaped out second time around will be replaced one day with a better one lol
So, you only cleaned the inside of the throttle. Has that helped? You haven't cleaned the sensor, have you?

by any chance did the car idle high after you cleaned it?
Thanks man, saved me some $$. I have an '07 Balt and am getting P0121 error this should fix it.
by any chance did the car idle high after you cleaned it? about 1500-2000 rpm
7 ra Yes it did for a little while and then it settled down
how long is a little while< sorry its just that when i drive it stays at 1500 even at 40 km it wont go down if i release the gas.
7 ra Did you try different gas? Try switching gas brands also get some complete engine cleaner, I used Dura Lube Fuel system treatment
I was skeptical at first and it a bang up job
Not to brag , but for pure insight; my Mechanic does this for free.
Great deal
Once you open it up to check it out, most good mechanics would stick a paper towel in there and give her a quick wiperooskie.
