I think the main thing that makes Crasher such a safe pick is the colors, actually. While most other GoBots were virtually unchanged from their Machine Robo counterparts (apart from the cartoon giving them new faces), Crasher was significantly redecoed - Bandai's Porsche Robo was white and blue! That likely gives Hasbro a lot more leeway to make Crashers without Bandai having grounds to sue, since they're so very clearly based on the GoBots character and not the Machine Robo toy. And hey, if Machine Robo is allowed to release a Bike Robo figure with an alternate Cy-Kill face, I'm willing to bet Hasbro can get away with a lot more than they have been doing.
The Studio Series Wreck-Gar is perfect for Cy-Kill, additionally, like Crasher, his face in the cartoon is vastly different from Bike Robo's generic face, so I think we could get a modern Cy-Kill if Hasbro so desired. I would like to see a Leader-1, too, but that one is more difficult because of how similar he is to Eagle Robo.
Exactly what I was thinking. Little bit of retooling and it's perfect. Wreck-Gar already has the option to put the tires on the forearms, retool it to the shoulders, take off the blaster nipples (😂) and give him a new head, heck keep the spike wheels to make him more different for Copyright and really make him look like a bot named Cy-Kill
I always thought the Maverick mold would be perfect for a Leader 1 homage. They could just strip the shuttle parts out of Siege Astrotrain to make Loco. Turbo can be any car, just not Siege's Sideswipe.
I actually think Hasbro could get away with it for the same reason that they're able to keep making Jetfire/Skyfire a thing. Cause Hasbro doesn't actually own the rights to the original Macross mold that character is based on. They were able to get away with it by just changing the head design from the toy and slapping an Autobot insignia on the chest. Some of the paint aps are in different spots as well making Skyfire more visually distinct from Jetfire. They also get around homages because it's a brand new mold that just happens to resemble the Macross toy but it's not reusing that same mold. 3rd Parties also use these same legal loop holes to avoid being sued by Hasbro even though we all know they're making Hasbro owned characters. Go-Bots technically has the loop hole built in because the anination models changed the design of the faces from how the toys looked. Hasbro can further make them look different just by using original molds rather trying to make something too similar to the Machine Robo toys. I think Hasbro could easily get away with putting a cartoon accurate Leader-1 head on a Seeker mold and putting a cartoon accurate Cy-Kill head on a Junkion mold and have two figures that homage those characters without setting off any land mines. The Seekers are distinct enough from Leader-1's original toy to pull off the homage while not infringing on Machine Robo's copy right. Same thing with Cy-Kil as a Junkion. It would also help to add very prominent Autobot and Decepticon insignias to them which Go-Bots didn't originally have. Cy-Kil has shown up as a Decepticon in the comics by the way looking exactlt like his animation model. He didn't last long though as he was killed by Megatron almost immediatly.
Funny thing I was just re-reading IDW's Megatron Origin and was thinking to myself we could get a retool of the SS86 Wreck-Gar and get an IDW inspired version of Cy-Kill. It would be different enough from Machine Robo's Bike Robo that it wouldn't be any infringement on the Copyright
I have such nostalgia for the Go-Bots. I remember my Grandma first getting me into Transformers a loooong time ago by renting me a Challenge of the Go-Bots VHS as well as the Transformers VHS that had the first appearance of the Dinobots. The only Go-Bot toy that I can remember ever handling as a kid was none other than the 1984 anomaly known as "Psycho" (mind you this was a few years after its release). Like I said, and absolute anomaly of a toy. If ever there were a toy I would love to see get a modern take, it would be "Psycho".
My favorite Go-Bot is Pathfinder, so she already has an option. If I were to do new versions of any Go-Bots, I'd probably go with Leader-1 and Cy-Kill by making they slight retools of Starscream and Junkheap respectively.
All they needed to do was retool the POTP Jazz / Ricochet a little, and that mould could've made a PERFECT Crasher. Could've done her in Original White and Cartoon Black. And then done Generations Selects releases for the rare Dunlop Red and Prize Draw Silver versions. Someone once did a great custom of Fitor, using a Classics Ramjet as a basis. Looked amazing!
I only had two Go-Bot toys as a kid: Zod and Dumper. I can only foresee a Dumper figure if there was an existing Generations Throttlebot Wideload or if they reused the CW Long Haul, again a farfetched notion. As for Zod? Extensive retool of SS86 Grimlock?
not really big on gobots but one of my favorite designs is Pathfinder, mostly for similar reasons I like Cosmos I just think the UFO is a fun vehicle mode despite it not being “practical”
My favorite go bots toy was Tux because of his vehicle mode and robot mode head. I wish hasbro would put out more characters in older classic vehicles. There are a few characters with vintage land and air vehicles from G2 that would make great additions to my collection if they were updated with the Legacy treatment. Wishful thinking.
One cool thing. I noticed about the original Loco as a kid was that he was wearing an engineer's cap. Those are the hats that are similar to the Marines octagonal caps, except they were the light blue striped ones.
Another cool thing I noticed about the original loco, was that its Wheels fit on an HO scale train set track. It was too small in every other aspect, but the wheel width fit perfectly on the rails.
Crasher has a different alt mode, Bug Bite is now white... I think this sort of side steps should be fine and we just need to add the names to other storylines. I always felt like RID15 Storm Shot would have made a perfectly fine Leader 1 by just making him grey, for exemple. I also feel like Smallfoot would make a GREAT standard repaint for Strongarm. Just give her orange light bar so she looks more like a utility truck than some sort of responder. I would be REALLY happy to see her again. Smallfoot was my favorite as a kid. I also think Pathfinder would be a perfect standard repaint for Cosmos. She wouldn't look anything like the original, but replace the green with a deep dark blue and the yellow with a cool grey and give her a red visor and you got it. It's a cool name, it gives Cosmos more chances to appear again and it's not the same alt mode at all. I've been hoping for this ever since iGear made their Roswell repaint of their Cosmos for TFCon. It's a brilliant move. They always want to reuse molds as much as possible and I think they could fill those ranks with Go-Bots hommages that would be just evocative enough to work without looking like the originals.
You've probably read this, but what about the Leader-1 homage in the Armada toy line? Little silver/grey jet that came with Optimus, that for me was the first time I saw a direct reference to GoBots in transformers.
I’m surprised that the people running the Bandai mania UA-cam channel, or at least hosting it, don’t actually bring up GoBots in their revenge of Chronos demonstrations.
I always liked the turret head of destroyer. Also vamp, scorp and the other monster gobots have a unique organic feel that could be cool as a transformers faction.

I used to have gobots when I was a kid. They were a lot cheaper that transformers. I remember getting puzzler for Christmas. I was so ecstatic for it. Now as I look back at it, why was it called puzzler? I remember the ectosuits that you can put the figures in then create giant robot . That was kind of tacky lol. Was never very big into gobots myself but I loved Puzzler and Monstrous. I think they were way better than the combiners G1 gave us. Not without flaws of course, but better

After the Origin Bumblebee, there's no reason to not give us Pathfinder. A few tweaks to the model, you could get close to her Cylon fighter-looking spacecraft mode.
I'd love to see them make another car Decepticon combiner that is like Puzzler in it has all the combining stuff build in. Which the last Stunticons had or at least more or less had.
I don't ever recall seeing the Legacy Velocitron Crasher ever on shelves here in the UK. One of the only figures we didn't get, or that it was rarer than rocking horse sh*t. I guess it was a similar situation in the USA with the Velocitron Cosmos figure that you guys struggled to find in shops over there.
I wish they'd just do a Seeker mold up like Leader-1. Just make a new head with an all grey plane with a more realistic color scheme. Seems viable, right? I also think Cy-kill from the Junkion mold could work.
also its Japanese source material Machine Robo joined the franchise crossover video game series that is Super Robot Wars as in you can see "Gobots" fighting alongside Gundams and Evangelions, Transformers had yet got that special treatment.
So what I'm getting out of this is that to really be able to do anything at all, they would have to buy the rest of the rights from Warner Brothers. And then they would have to fully reboot the franchise to fully separate it from the original Machine Robo toys.
FYI there were bad guys in the Machine Robo line. It was the more alien looking designs like what was brought over as “Creepy” and “Skorp.” You should check out the Machine Robo Revenge of Cronos anime.
i'm prety sure the main reason Crasher gets to happen is that her iconic black and red colourscheme was exclusive to Gobots. her Machine Robo counterpart was never released in those colours. only the white deco. similarly, the Blue Leader-1, Black/Green Cy-Kill, and Orange Blaster are also viable options if hasbro ever wants to d more gobots. also, the EHobby Gobots are unique decos, most of them based on cancelled decos for g1 microbots.

I really want Hasbro to produce repaints to give us all the figures from the E-Hoby G1 Go-Bots set. As you said, we already have Bug Bite and Road Ranger. Why not release Pathfinder and Treds as well? The figures in the E-Hobby set don't even look like any of original figures, so Hasbro doesn't even need to worry about Bandai coming after them. Just release repaints based off of the set they already created for E-Hobby.
My first go bot was pathfinder, I never saw the cartoon, so didn't know until my adult years, that it was a she. Also got Stacks for a birthday present one year, and of course had no "problem", working with my cousin's Optimus Prime.
I get a kick watching the Machine Robo: Revenge of Chronos series versions of Leader-1, Cykill and the rest of the mainstay GoBots as jobber characters; They actually look better and have the toy features. No dumb 5,o’clock shadow on Bike Robo lol. That being said, the 3rd party “MP” class Bike Robo does include the GoBot face which is a pretty cool nod.
i am hoping for the SS junkion mold to be remolded into cy-kill. or maybe make a homage to Vamp by making her more bat like, and then claim they took inspiration from the batmobile.
TJ, regarding the "-" that you mention around10:30 for the Japanese characters it's not exactly the same. In Japan when "-" is used in katakana (the characters used to spell "Go-bots" it's simply to elongate the vowel sound of the character that precedes it.
From what I can tell Machine Robo/Gobots (currently) has virtually ZERO representation at retail outside Asia. Hasbro COULD make them some sort of offer. Cut a deal with Bandai and retool 86 Wreck-Gar into Cy-kill already. But the reason they won't do is not Hasbro is "scared" of lawsuits. It is the SAME REASON WE CAN"T GET THE RID2001 CARTOON (English version) released on any sort of home media. Hasbro may not own the rights to the dub currently but they could EASILY have made a deal with Disney or whoever does own the rights to it. They are simply too DAMN CHEAP and LAZY to bother making an effort to get the deal done.
To be honest, even if Hasbro would care less on doing more on bringing back GoBots in a big way, I think Warner Bros should do it, cuz ya know, *Challenge of the Go-Bots* was created by Hanna-Barbera, so…I’m a bit stumped as to why WB didn’t bother buying them instead of Hasbro… **sigh** Or maybe what if *WB* bought Tonka instead of Hasbro, that’d actually be a bit better tbh
Something needs to be done with hasbro. If Hasbro has a lot of money then they should go after Tonka and whoever else to get all the rights equally so that they can do many other of the Gobots. Or get rid of that idea of doing this series all together and think about other things Transformers

the big hang up is everyone gets caught up on replicating the original we have entire transformer lines like Armada where the toys don't look anything like G1 why can't Hasbro just do a completely original line of keeping the same vehicle modes and color schemes but making them different enough that they very obviously aren't the same? if we can get an Optimus prime that's a fire truck why can't we get a leader one that's a t-rex? or a tank?
Crasher was definitely my favorite Gobot from the show, I couldn’t stand the main three Guardians and and really the only other renegade I cared about was the non-transforming Zod. The toys had alot of cool designs but tended to break even more easily than the transformers, on the average. My favorite gobot toy that I owned was the one that transformed into the blue Seahawk helecopter, much better looking than Coptor, but of course I broke the rotors…..
That’s what I keep saying about a Power Rangers and transformers crossover. Hasbro bought Power Rangers, so why hasn’t a Power Rangers and Transformers crossover happened yet? Even if it’s a crossover with beast wars.

The combiners required no accessories. That was a huge plus. I’d love to see a Puzzler reissue.
When people are asking "why don't they make Go-Bots" they aren't really asking. What they are actually saying is "Make Go-Bots!". Don't care how. Hasbro can figure it out. If we can get Star Wars crossovers, TMNT, Jurassic Park, Back to the Future, Top Gun, we can get Go-Bots. LOL
this. if they own the names I don't care what the toys look heck the colors don't even have to match the originals if that's what they got to do we have machine Wars Armada etcetera toy lines where the Transformers don't even look like G1 why can't we get more robots that just don't look anything like the originals?

After the Origin Bumblebee, there's no reason to not give us Pathfinder.
A few tweaks to the model, you could get close to her Cylon fighter-looking spacecraft mode.
Crasher is my favorite Go-Bot, followed shortly by Cy-Kill and Fi-Tor.
I'd love to see them make another car Decepticon combiner that is like Puzzler in it has all the combining stuff build in. Which the last Stunticons had or at least more or less had.
I don't ever recall seeing the Legacy Velocitron Crasher ever on shelves here in the UK.
One of the only figures we didn't get, or that it was rarer than rocking horse sh*t.
I guess it was a similar situation in the USA with the Velocitron Cosmos figure that you guys struggled to find in shops over there.

I wish they'd just do a Seeker mold up like Leader-1. Just make a new head with an all grey plane with a more realistic color scheme. Seems viable, right? I also think Cy-kill from the Junkion mold could work.

also its Japanese source material Machine Robo joined the franchise crossover video game series that is Super Robot Wars as in you can see "Gobots" fighting alongside Gundams and Evangelions, Transformers had yet got that special treatment.
So what I'm getting out of this is that to really be able to do anything at all, they would have to buy the rest of the rights from Warner Brothers.
And then they would have to fully reboot the franchise to fully separate it from the original Machine Robo toys.
I'm not sure what my favorite Gobots toy is, but I really wish someone would remake the submarine one.
FYI there were bad guys in the Machine Robo line. It was the more alien looking designs like what was brought over as “Creepy” and “Skorp.”

i'm prety sure the main reason Crasher gets to happen is that her iconic black and red colourscheme was exclusive to Gobots. her Machine Robo counterpart was never released in those colours. only the white deco.
similarly, the Blue Leader-1, Black/Green Cy-Kill, and Orange Blaster are also viable options if hasbro ever wants to d more gobots.
also, the EHobby Gobots are unique decos, most of them based on cancelled decos for g1 microbots.

@@TatsuChi right, but what im trying to say is that the black deco was never used in Machine Robo. meaning its a Gobot-only deco, which means Bandai has no legal claim to it. the white deco was both a Gobot and a Machine Robo.
I really want Hasbro to produce repaints to give us all the figures from the E-Hoby G1 Go-Bots set.
As you said, we already have Bug Bite and Road Ranger. Why not release Pathfinder and Treds as well?
The figures in the E-Hobby set don't even look like any of original figures, so Hasbro doesn't even need to worry about Bandai coming after them. Just release repaints based off of the set they already created for E-Hobby.
My first go bot was pathfinder, I never saw the cartoon, so didn't know until my adult years, that it was a she. Also got Stacks for a birthday present one year, and of course had no "problem", working with my cousin's Optimus Prime.
My favorite Gobot is Night Ranger. It hurts me that the Backtrack redeco of Lugnutz was cancelled 😢

I get a kick watching the Machine Robo: Revenge of Chronos series versions of Leader-1, Cykill and the rest of the mainstay GoBots as jobber characters; They actually look better and have the toy features. No dumb 5,o’clock shadow on Bike Robo lol. That being said, the 3rd party “MP” class Bike Robo does include the GoBot face which is a pretty cool nod.

TJ, regarding the "-" that you mention around10:30 for the Japanese characters it's not exactly the same. In Japan when "-" is used in katakana (the characters used to spell "Go-bots" it's simply to elongate the vowel sound of the character that precedes it.
From what I can tell Machine Robo/Gobots (currently) has virtually ZERO representation at retail outside Asia. Hasbro COULD make them some sort of offer. Cut a deal with Bandai and retool 86 Wreck-Gar into Cy-kill already. But the reason they won't do is not Hasbro is "scared" of lawsuits. It is the SAME REASON WE CAN"T GET THE RID2001 CARTOON (English version) released on any sort of home media. Hasbro may not own the rights to the dub currently but they could EASILY have made a deal with Disney or whoever does own the rights to it. They are simply too DAMN CHEAP and LAZY to bother making an effort to get the deal done.
How come the top Gun crossover wasn't talked about since that is clearly a leader one mold and wouldn't take much to turn it into leader one
I didn't grow up with Gobots so I can't say which one has a chance as a Transformer. Also, Revenge of Chronos was TV show not a movie.

To be honest, even if Hasbro would care less on doing more on bringing back GoBots in a big way, I think Warner Bros should do it, cuz ya know, *Challenge of the Go-Bots* was created by Hanna-Barbera, so…I’m a bit stumped as to why WB didn’t bother buying them instead of Hasbro… **sigh**

Something needs to be done with hasbro. If Hasbro has a lot of money then they should go after Tonka and whoever else to get all the rights equally so that they can do many other of the Gobots. Or get rid of that idea of doing this series all together and think about other things Transformers

the big hang up is everyone gets caught up on replicating the original we have entire transformer lines like Armada where the toys don't look anything like G1 why can't Hasbro just do a completely original line of keeping the same vehicle modes and color schemes but making them different enough that they very obviously aren't the same? if we can get an Optimus prime that's a fire truck why can't we get a leader one that's a t-rex? or a tank?
Didn’t Tonka have some original content? Such as the Command Centre, Thruster, Zod, and several other original Tonka designed Gobot toys.

Crasher was definitely my favorite Gobot from the show, I couldn’t stand the main three Guardians and and really the only other renegade I cared about was the non-transforming Zod. The toys had alot of cool designs but tended to break even more easily than the transformers, on the average. My favorite gobot toy that I owned was the one that transformed into the blue Seahawk helecopter, much better looking than Coptor, but of course I broke the rotors…..

That’s what I keep saying about a Power Rangers and transformers crossover. Hasbro bought Power Rangers, so why hasn’t a Power Rangers and Transformers crossover happened yet? Even if it’s a crossover with beast wars.
I hate how people have got so hung up on making the current toys look exactly like the 1980s cartoon. Yes, you should keep them generally recognizable, but don't let them get completely fossilized.
