- The DeKalbs lived next door to Jennifer and Sara Hart. The couple and their adopted children died when their SUV went over a cliff along the Mendocino Coast.
The man is a coward. The first time the kid asked for food secretly, the man shoulda picked up the phone. What a selfish coward.

He was smiling as he told the story. The smile means a lie. A duper's delight. He knows something he isn't telling. Were the children trafficked? Does he know where Devonte is?
If these children had showed up at my house I would have let them in and immediately called the cops and explained the abuse allegations immediately. This is such a sad story. The community failed these children.

I noticed what that man said regarding the 12 year old with missing teeth. The girl (Abigail) smiles with her mouth closed in photos. The mother said that Abigail doesn't want new teeth. Yeah right. Makes me wonder which of the 2 women knocked that poor child's teeth out.

Unfortunately this is what we get told, not to interfere in someone's business. I had to live through abuse with my parents. It wasn't so much that I got beaten but my mom was. None of the nice middle-class neighbours said or did anything.(They had disgusted looks on their faces, yes) On the contrary, their children weren't allowed to play with me any longer because I was considered not good enough and they didn't want me to rub off on their nice well-behaved children. Needless to say when anything went missing guess who was to be blamed? And let me tell you I wasn't an aggressive child at all I was severly withdrawn, living in my fantasy world. So for about 8 years I was wandering the hood on my own, lonely to the core. That was 40 years ago and I can remember it as if it was yesterday. Thank you neighbours for not caring but being quick to judge! I guess there are lots of people like this all over the world. I can relate very much to the pain and desperation these kids had to go through. Wish very much for all of them to have a cosy and loving life wherever they are now and may all their needs be finally met!

I don't think he necessarily finds it funny based solely on this interview. A lot of people giving interviews about something uncomfortable smile at points. But you're right about his wife's 80 year old father!

Yes and what makes me mad is when the wife says when they saw the new story they knew it had to be them. So, you mean to tell me they knew something like that would happen, yet they did nothing to help these children at all. They shouldn't even be getting an interview. They are disgusting. I can't say that these kids were murdered because of them, but I can definitely say they weren't saved because of them.

I think you're reading it wrong.... Some people make that face when in a state of shock and incomprehension. Which is clearly the case here. Since everything else about his demeanor (tranced like staring, wrinkled forhead, etc) and what he's talking about shows he isn't actually amused at anything.
The only people at fault are dead. Let's not blame the neighbors who could only do and knew so much, especially with the incompetence of child protective services. Anyone can tell they are well meaning, innocent people.

I dont believe everything these people are saying. I dont see what is funny about a black child asking for food and things. I dont see what is so funny when all the children are dead. I dont see what is funny about them knowing the 12 year old was looking neglected or strange with no teeth and small, yet they have these little chuckles. I dont believe that they cared, I dont believe they even liked those black children, and didnt help them when they knew they were being abused. The man looks bemused and smug, and the lady looks guilty.... like a maternal guilt that a female would get.... therefore i believe there is more to this story.
Aside from that it is strange how black children keep being placed with foster families which murder them. Not one or two either, but hoards of black children with one freaking family. This is not the first case. This is some systemic neglect.

This interview, along with the other parts of it that I’ve seen, SICKEN me to my CORE! Why in HELL would it take “...a week or so” of a CHILD coming over to beg for food for ANY REASONABLE ADULT to figure out they were “...probably reaching out”?! Why would you not “...know what to do” when a child comes CRYING TO YOU FOR HELP at 1:30-2:00 in the morning, TELLING you that she is being mistreated?!? Why would it only be a little “suspicious” when you ask about the “...missing teeth thing” and are told that she didn’t want them replaced?! Did you even bother to ask how she LOST them in the first place?! I am convinced that this guy is the son-in-law that the older gentleman on the 911 call was referring to, the SIL who didn’t want to get involved, and who returned the little girl to her abusive adoptive mother! That older gentleman is the ONLY one who seemed to be expressing genuine concern for the well-being of these poor kids, and the ONLY reason that this guy probably called CPS is because he was probably tired of the kids asking for his food! And the smirking during the interview...disgusting! You failed these poor kids right along with everyone else (except for the Father-In-Law) and you’re nobody’s hero, so stay off of the cameras!
Jen returned to their house early the next morning with all the kids in tow explaining that the children had mental problems as a result of their traumatic pasts and that the girl who ran away in the middle of the night was in the habit of lying to get attention. She even forced her to write an apology note admitting that she had lied. Of course they should have acted right away but I can't blame the wife for being initially conflicted about what to do as apparently Jen was a very smooth liar. Devonte also begged her not to call the police as he didn't want to be split up from his siblings. The wife may not be a perfect person but neither is she a callous monster. I hope those kids are in a good place now and at peace finally. They deserved so much better than the sad life they had. I hope this will lead to some sort of change within the legal system so these types of parents can't hide abuse as easily.

It honestly disgusting, the story they got the next morning was apparently about a cat dieing, which is why that girl jumped out a second story window ran through bushes looking for help and shelter. They delivered food to Devonte 10 times before they called 911 again. And my DR. Umar senses tell me it was only because the care package became an inconvenience. There were so many red flags the system failed these children at every turn. And I've yet to hear anyone say they're sorry.

Let's talk about it. So these children came from an adoption agency that no longer exists so there's no sure way to know how they even received the children into their care. I speculate that the women being lesbians also helped them with getting the children into their care. Nobody wants to offend a minority. These children look like they're mentally behind as well, maybe born to addicted mothers, who knows. What about them? Didn't they lose track of their babies in the first place? That's where the issue began, not with these lesbians, who only took advantage of the sad situation.

I'm just saying...I wonder I there had been more done on their end if they were white children. I try not to go there in this case, but I do not understand how a child comes pleading for help in the middle of the night, begging to not make her go back. Being verbally and physically abused gone out the window covered in blackberry bushes (that hurts to walk and fall through, she was desperate to get out of that house) ..and you're told all this and see all this in a child and nothing in you immediately calls police. Then they come for food, for over a week and you still don't call police, the father in law called police and he wasn't even really involved with the kids. You can tell this guy doesn't care. The disregard for children continously crying out for help, more than one of those children coming to them. Nothing there made them really do anything. I wonder what would have happened differently if this couple actually took the situation seriously and gave a damn. These kids would have had more of chance to escape this. Sickens me

He stated his son-in-law didn't want his daughter to make that call but he coudn't let those children in danger and was making the call in behalf of daughter. I listened to that audio : Dad's neighbour is the one that made the call . Man has some nerve answering that interview! He and his wife knew for a while already when dad called CPS

The father of Dana Dekalbs, all the way in Texas, cared more about these kids than the neighbors watching it first hand. The husband in particular. Listening to the fathers 911 call was eerie, because he knew something needed to be done. That isn't in everyone, this is furiating watching them get interviewed. I wouldn't even want to show my face after that display of not giving a fuck.

I can't comprehend a child showing up and begging me to hide them and then just taking a parent's word and letting them go without calling anyone. If that baby had come to me, even if I'd never seen her before, I'd KNOW something was wrong, I'd ignore them looking for her outside and keep her safe inside, call the police and encourage her to tell them the truth from the safety of my house and encourage the police to separate the kids and ask them in my home too or away from those parents. I feel like not only not wanting to get involved but ignorantly gobbling up the 'drug babies - have issues' story is such a racial biased that it helped kill these children. Just like how they were ripped from their blood relative simply for one NON-abusive incident, if those lesbian moms had been black, those babies would be alive because they'd been ripped away from them the first signs of abuse or even a hint of abuse.

The neighbors tried calling the police once when hannah came over, but the 911 operation ignored it. only the second time were the police called but by the time anything actually happend Sarah and Jennifer had taken the kids on their final trip.

They seem like good enough people but that's the whole problem. Even a couple like this doesn't give any credit to the voice of a child. The kids weren't in school or anything. Their neighbors were the only ones they could reach out to. Who returns a child to the person they come asking you to protect them from. I don't care if its my best friends kid. I know she's a great mom but if her kid was truly scared and trying to get away (like the way they describe this young girl desperate enough to stay hidden she'll injure herself in the blackberries) I sure as shit wouldn't return her and ask her claimed abuser what's going on.

From what I understand these 6 kids represent 2 sets of biological siblings. Devonte, Jeremiah, and Sierra had the same biological mother, and their biological aunt tried to adopt them. She lost her court fight when social services found out that the kids had contact with their biological mother, who was dealing with a drug addiction. The other 3 children shared the same biological parents. All six of them came from Texas. The state of Texas paid these women about $270,000 over the past 10 years to help care for these kids. cloudziinmyize, Enough people called CPS over the years that this can only be considered a system failure. CPS would visit the 2 women and they would come across as caring loving parents. They knew how to act like concerned parents. I know that the siblings Devonte, Jeremiah and Ciera (all 3 are biological siblings) had been in their care for 10 years. Many calls later from concerned neighbors and teachers and the whole family is dead.

These neighbours need to be interviewed again by journalists. They did the right thing but they were also fearful of meddling. Someone needs to interview the wife again and ask her how Devonté was treated because he is the only one that was seen outside, according to them. That means either he was their golden child OR they were punishing him by keeping him indoors.
I want to see the lives of these 6 black children given the respect and honour they deserve. They deserved parents who loved them.
