  • ✨Hey there and welcome to my channel!✨
My name is Francesca, I'm a British 20-something currently based in Paris for my Master's degree.
Everyone seems to have been obsessed with Emily in Paris on Netflix, and it’s sparked huge debate and criticism for a lot of it’s stereotypes! One thing that made me laugh was her “chambre de bonne” apartment- which it definitely isn’t! I live in one of these former servant’s rooms and thought it’d be fun to give you a tour ☺️💫

I am French and I must say: you are lucky because this is not what a chambre de bonne looks like! This room is a thousand times cleaner, modern and brighter. In real "French life", they put you in a dark cupboard like Harry Potter and ask you to pay 800 euros to hear your neighbours eating chips. And the toilet is in the corridor. So I'm happy for you!

I am definitely very lucky! My landlord lives in the same building and they newly renovated the room just before I moved in which I think is why it's so nice! Thank you :)

If you’re feeling the lack of privacy you can hang a curtain by the window with a pressure curtain rod, it won’t ruin the walls and you’ll have your curtain!

Great idea, thank you! I ended up using a sticky plastic that makes it look like frosted glass, but curtains would be so much cuter!

Have you ever tried privacy window film? It sticks to the window with a little soapy water. You can cut it to size, maybe a solution for your bathroom wall.

@@frenchcesca3988 Cute apartment and video! I was going to suggest that same thing for the bathroom. You can also find it under frosted vinyl, even on Amazon. And also, there are some kind of temporary paper shades o blinds, you can cut and install yourself, that I believe may help you with the big windows. I know they exist in France because I saw them on "Una mexicana en Paris" channel (A Mexican in Paris), and she, Mirella, bought them for her balcony (you can see them on the video where she redecorates her balcony, they seemed super practical. I also saw them on Amazon). Greetings from a venezuelan architect!

I would add, for exterior window privacy, a simple tension rod for the window nook and a cafe curtain. Tension rods don't need hardware and they're very inexpensive.

What a lovely apartment! I had a similar issue with some glass windows and privacy. I bought a roll of “frosted privacy static film” from Amazon and it is amazing! It sticks with water and it is super easy to remove and reuse so it is super rent friendly.

That is a very nice setup!
I’m thinking if you got an expandable tension rod to go between the walls either side of the kitchen over the window, then hang a fabric shower curtain , cut to the right length, across it for privacy and darkness.
It’s not permanent and would be easily removed.
Tie it to one side during the day, so you can open the window.
    Same in your bathroom.
    BHV would have them.
Whoever renovated this c de b did a lovely job!
    Lucky you!🇫🇷

Your room is not too shabby. Most don't even have a kitchen. Also, Ikea has those frosted glass plastic window stick-ons. That may be a good alternative to window coverings. While you're there, you can upgrade your bed to a loft-bed which will raise your bed by 2 meters and you can actually put a small sofa in your room.

As far as the kitchen window and night time darkness/ early morning rising, I'd put up a tension rod with a simple curtain that you can close. And, if you don't love the look of it in the day, it can easily be taken down and stowed away. I think that would give you a lot of privacy and would keep the streaming sun out in the morning. : )

@@sec2355 That's Paris, this city is very expensive the only way to have something cheap in Paris is to be able to get a room from CROUS, and only a few students can get one because there are a lot of students in Paris.

    Wow!
I hope you're busy enough with your job and everything and just sleep there because if I'm honest I would go nuts in this apartment without being rude. You can get blinds on ebay fir 10€ which you just so to say clip on the window. I'm subscribed now 🙂

I'm definitely glad I didn't spend lockdown here because as much as I love it, I think I'd have gone nuts too 🙂 I ended up buying privacy film which sticks to the window and works great! Thanks for the sub, happy new year!

Check Pinterest for ideas. Maybe you can think on cafe courtains that you apply directly to the window wood panels with velcro. You dont have to cover the whoIe window so you wont loose the light that comes thru. I saw courtains made with burlap that looked interesting.

Why does France have these, but countries like Belgium do not?

    • @frenchcesca3988
      @frenchcesca3988  3 роки тому +5

Great question, I'm not sure! I know France has them because the rich families needed to have their servants nearby so they could look after the rich houses easily.

    • @jujublue4426

That's maybe because Haussmann's buildings were built to have the servants close to their superiors, but idk

This is the biggest chambre de bonne ever. Definitely not typical or educational for people who are interested in living in those studios. However, it definitely gives Emily in Paris/Friends vibes. You are very lucky.

No, this is not a real chambre de bonne. It has all comfort. Une chambre de bonne has NOTHING. A bed, a table, a chair, a sink, a small window and it is hell in summer. No heating in winter. Iwonder how much is the rent for this rent. More like a studio. Actually people who owns several chambre de bonne are clever. They brake the walls and make some kind of appartments. In my time 1990, we had to pay cash. So that was illegal. Then I decided to install the telephone. I wrote a false letter with approval of the owner and got the phone. I left the place, and send the bill to the propriétaire!! They exploit you, making easy money on your back. I got my revenge. Now, things may have changed but I am not sure. Here we see a priviledge person. Still has to climb to the seventh floor with patience. Old people used to live there. Can you imagine the conditions?
