    We’ve done a lot of work with the 6.5 PRC cartridge, including a lightweight rifle build, testing the Bergara Wilderness HMR, and a variety of other projects. This time, we took a closer look at the Berger 144 grain 6.5 mm Long Range Hybrid Target Bullet.

    Gavin, at 13:43 when discussing cleaning off the case lube and you mention ... "you could leave it on there"... There have been tests with water (rain), ice, and lube, intentionally left on cases to measure the differences in internal ballistics and chamber stress. These conditions did not make significant pressure changes, but they certainly create significant differences in bolt face forces. In some rigs, this opens the door for POI shifts as well as challenges safety factors.
    It will also create a false indication of pressure when the brass of the case head and primer cup flows even though pressure is normal because head force is abnormally high. Don't leave lube on your rifle brass and don't leave your rifle chamber flooded with preservative oils. Avoid letting ice or water get in there as well.
    Also, with small (3 to 4 shots) group samples, the SD/ES stats aren't worth the trouble. It would be just as informative to just show the samples.
    Great to see Guy getting to play with some great toys and a interesting new cartridge. Well done.
    YMMV

    • @stevenlewis6781
      @stevenlewis6781 Рік тому +1

      Yes and it will certainly create a "stuck case" situation, and with a AR-10 or AR-15 it will cause a nightmare. I've had to "mortar" an AR-15 many times before I figured out it was excessive die lube. The chamber needs to be scrubbed with solvent afterwards or you can still get stuck cases even after they've been cleaned.

      Would be great as a 1000 yard match cartridge. But would be close to a 264 Win magnum. As far as barrel wear. A 6.5 X 284 Lapua only gets about 1400 rounds of usable life for 1000yards. A 100 fps over a 6.5 X 284 will not do much for you. As far as a match cartridge in most cartridges.

      I think that's due to the fact that those big long .30 cals, when pushed fast by the PRC, is going to hold a lot more energy down range. When you're trying to defeat barriers like car doors, etc, this can be an important consideration.

They said this came directly from Capstone Precision Group. Then about 2 weeks later they published their load data and it was way less than what they told me over the phone... Their published loads, don't even beat the Creedmoor by hardly anything...

    Great video but you're velocities for there 144 seemed very modest. I have the Bergara Wilderness Ridge in 6.5 PRC and I'm running N565 58.6 gn and there Berger 156, Lapua brass and CCI BR2s I'm getting MV 3005 with single digit SDs and ES. Load is sub half MOA. Last time out with this rifle I shot a 2in group at 650yds. Pretty sweet for a factory rifle. Now there is a however, I am single feeding the rounds as the mag box is to short for my OAL of 3.050. That's something I can live with as I purchased the 2 bullet quiver from Short Action Precision. I've been very happy with this rifle. I did top it with a Athlon Ares BTR Gen 2 4.5x27x50 with the ALP3 reticle that I purchased primarily because of your reviews of Athlon. A Sweet setup for sure.

How is a 6" group at 1000 yards. Enough? or you could go one step further and buy a rifles chambered in Lapua 6.5x47 uigng that bullet and use Lapua factory ammo. What do you look at when evaluating a given powder to see if it might be a good fit for a particular bullet, and I'm guessing barrel, etc, combo? If you cover this in a video already, my apologies, but you have a LOT of videos. But how to evaluate a powder might be a good video - seems like there a lot of variables that come into play. i.e. Long barrel + heavy bullet = slow powder....ish. LOL

    Looking at your results at minute 16:35 indicates you may have swapped the velocities between the first and second, and between the third and fourth charges. Also the sudden V0 ES drop at the fifth charge indicates you were just approaching the stable range of VV N565. I would bet that the VV 6.5 PRC data is very conservative. Compare it to 6.5 CM you are only getting a velocity increase of about 75 fps. There is an internal case volume difference of about 14 grains of H2O, yet the charge only increases 7 grains. I would guess your 54.2 grain change is developing only 50000 psi +/- 2000 psi. If that is true a top charge of 58.0 grains is not beyond reason.

    • @VulpesGBR
      @VulpesGBR Рік тому

      I thought the same, here in the UK VV powders are the most common (at least with all the shooters I know) and we also use N565 with our PRC's. My own load developed on my Begara Premier HMR is 58gr N565 using the heavier 156gr Berger EOL (Lapua brass, Fed 210M primer). So I was surprised to see Guy's load top out at 54.5gr.
      There are a few guys in my club target shooting the 6.5PRC at a mile, they prefer RL26.

      @@VulpesGBR Well Guy seems to come from the real hunter side of reloading (not NRL Hunter which is a PRS match shooting at animal shaped plates) , and was properly staying within the VV data envelope. Now with the experience seeing that his top charge did essentially match the velocity shown in the data, he could step into the unknown a bit and see if higher charges can be used in the subject rifle to increase the precision of his loads.
