The Undertones | Feargal Sharkey | Punk
Thanks for watching - please subscribe!
Hi Danny ,I was the proud owner of your Rickenbacker ,I sold it to tony who then passed it on to you ,i bought it from a bankruptcy auction some years ago and Gordy from Rudy had played it but I can't confirm if Mickey would have ever used it ,it did come from an auction in England and was property of Kenny Jones estate at a time so I'm sure there's a lot of history behind it ,and if I could have put more proof behind it I probably would still own it ,hope this helps a bit ,ps undertones where and still are a great band along with SLF ,,regards pete
loving this
The Undertones are a FANTASTIC hidden gem of a band! Even John Peel has a lyric in his tombstone from them!
I’m inquisitive what was written on his grave ?
@@lucybarney1Teenage kicks so hard to beat.
He was the first DJ to play teenage kicks.
@@lucybarney1
"Teenage dreams, so hard to beat." The first line of "Teenage Kicks."
@@gringogreen4719 Bit unfortunate, now we all know about his tastes.
Feargul Sharkey has such a distinctive voice.
Yes it can be best described these days in the upper echelons as "Rent a Gob"!?!
His brother Nazgul was better......
Fear GAL!
Undertones and Stiff Little Fingers make for an interesting study in contrast of that moment in History & Music.
Definitely
In times of great social unrest come solutions from opposite sides of the coin. 😁
I was watching a video earlier and, as I read the comments, I saw this from some random dude and I wrote it down...
"Punk isn't about using your brain. It's about using your heart to make music, just like the Blues."
Danny, your talent is far deeper than maybe the vid shorts have shown. Nice to see you finally coming out from under the bushel. The Undertones are still performing and their songs are timeless.
The Undertones and The Buzzcocks crystalized what would become Punk Pop. I was a Kid at the time both were about in their original form. Unlike most music I loved at the time, I never fell out of love and fell in love again with their music, I always loved it.
I didn't realise how closely the Undertones' and the Buzzocks' melodic, upbeat garage band style has been imitated by the modern UK indie and the USA Alt-Rock scenes.
I had so much fun watching this video. 5 stars. Bonus points for the cable knit sweater. Great video, Danny.
Please more longer videos !!!!!
Good enough for John Peel, good enough for me.
No worries, Danny, we love your cosplays!
I personally would love to hear some original songs of yours one day!
They were OK, but no Wham.
They are fantastic
Totally underrated
Brilliant songs
Really hoping you get backstage!!! It will be rad to see a pic of you back there, even better if you can get some video! Good luck Danny!
I've always preferred Stiff Little Fingers when it comes to Irish punk bands. The Undertones were amazing though.
Saw The Undertones at The Showbox on 1st Ave. in Seattle 1980. Just fantastic!
Another underrated band is Squeeze.
Especially the early stuff before they got too Beatlesy for my tastes. Cool For Cats is a perfect snapshot of the times, "The Sweeney's doin' 90 cos they've got the word to go. They get a gang of villains in a shed up at Heathrow..."
So true, the missus always DID look the bleedin' same! Great show! 😎
Glenn Tilbrook is my favourite guitar player and Chris Difford is my favourite songwriter then they also had the most stacked band of all time with Gilson Lavis and Jools Holland not to mention the strangest bass playing of all time
Squeeze aint ever punk more pub
@@gavinw5784 who here said squeeze was punk?
A lovely tribute to a truly fantastic band who still sound fresh. More passion videos please!
Always thought they were like Buzzcocks.
Loved the Mars Bar song.
Wore a Rudi t-shirt to SLF/Damned/Skids show in Belfast last week.
Mars Bar - great song! Unfortunately I had to switch to Twix IRL because Mars bars rotted my teeth 😭
This band was a big part of my teen years all those decades ago. I still have the vinyl. Power pop/punk at it's finest!
Your singing makes me want to hear a Yorkshire version of Slade
SLEHD
Cum'on feel't'noize.
@@SD_UK This made me giggle. 😊
Oh that would be awesome! 👍🏻 I'll second that motion.
I was JUST thinking of Slade!!!
Undertones, love playing their songs. Playing in the ME introducing the locals to punk...
Class tribute to a class band. Good stuff. Well played fella.
Please do more of these band re-views/ background videos Danny, absolutely love them
Would you believe I also couldn't suss out that chord? Solved now!
first saw them around '77 and last time before covid - they were the best punk band by a mile and still have it
is that an SG1000? love them
If you’re talking Irish punk bands, I would probably go for Stiff Little Fingers, but the Undertones are good too
Check out That Petrol Emotion as well
Good afternoon,Danny, congratulations by your video, cheers and have a nice weekend for you and #BEHS4ever!!!!
Brilliant stuff Danny, big love for the undertones. I was a little nipper when they hit big, all the other punk bands were a bit scary but Jimmy JImmy was the talk of the playground when they did it on top of the pops. Was blown away when I rediscovered them in my teens. So many great songs.
Thanks for turning me on to The Undertones! Your channel is one of my favs. Keep playin the BEHS!! 🤘🏼🤘🏼
I always think of the Undertones and the Buzzcocks as similar bands. Neither would be considered punk now, but I remember when punk wasn't defined by such a narrow vision. They are both punk bands to their core. Both could write a catchy tune and thoughtful lyrics that spoke to young people at the time (And I should imagine still do today). Great attempt to capture the spirit of the band.
The Undertones were vital to the whole of Northern Ireland and opened the door for so many bands and musicians from there. It's good to see Fergal Sharkey still close to his punk roots. If river and waterway activism and caring about your environment isn't punk, I don't know what is.
As a lifelong UT fan that was quite special, thank you ❤ Can you do The Damned next🙏
Brought a tear to my eye and took me back to messing about on the streets . Cool vid Mr Sapko
How about Glen Matlock? I think he deserves some recognition.
Love your work. Good luck!
Since you are a big punk fan, can you do a video comparing Glen Matlock and Sid Vicious?
Apples and...decomposing oranges
I used to live on the border between Holmfirth & Scholes. Glorious countryside in a house that I literally helped to build, which led to a career in Project Management.
I hope you enjoyed the gig 😊
They were looking back almost a 1960s garage punk band, later even bringing in a farfisa organ sound.
First band I ever saw. I ripped their first lp sleeve off the wall of Tiffanys Coventry and got Feargal's autograph the rest of the band scurried past me before I could ask anyone else.
The only autograph I EVER asked for.
Wednesday Week was the first song I'd heard by them (bought the single when it was still fairly new just cause I liked the cover art lol). Still my favorite song by them
Thank you. Keep up the good work.
Always quality content.
I have a friend who grew up in Denmark and as a kid loved the song "I'm Terry the Lobster", didn't know it was "Alternative Ulster" until she was well into her 20s
Fantastic ' what a great tribute to such a great band ' ...you got Feargal off to a T '
Fkin' brilliant \O/
Blimey! From one Yorkshire bloke to another, that wer' reyt good, that!!
My perfect cousin..... Tune...
Surprise traditional grip!
there i've monetised you !
Great vid! Love the longer vids, deep dives, great bands...
How about a deep dive on
The Zutons?
Day one of asking for a video on The Zutons
The Undertones! Danny knows. 🔥😎
Day 138 of asking for JJ Burnels behs tone. Back in year 9 my history teacher who was part of an old mod band showed me Teenage Kicks after i told him i wanted to write music, he said it was one of his big inspirations. Changed my life. Been a fan since
Stage one: Get a guitar combo amp.
The second song you played _really_ made me think of a number of 'They Might Be Giants songs', notably 'Twisting'.
Anyway...
Pure gold, and you barely had to say a word.
Have you seen the film Good Vibrations? all about Northern Ireland punk scene well worth a watch for any 'tones fan
Wednesday Week … my best punk rock friend in the 80s was named “Wednesday”… she was almost homeless and I would let her hang out at my place while I was studying design in Denver. When I got home, she always vacuumed and washed the dishes. We always played “Wednesday Week” as her theme song. Today nearly forty years later, she is still one of my best friends… married with kids living in Italy… me married and living in Tokyo. Life is funny!
I attended a lot of Rush and Van Halen concerts, among others, way back in the fun 1980s. The Bee Gees concert was incredible and I have to consider them one of the most underrated bands in history.
the most underrated rock band is the ruts
Fukyeah mate!!
The Undertones were all shades of awesomeness
4:19 I would have loved to have been a fly-on-the-wall at that gathering of the Secret West Yorkshire Behs Collective (featuring yourself, Scott's Behs Lessons, and Marc from Talking Behs) in your underground lair.
I loved that the drummer could never stop grinning while everyone else looked hard and serious. Great band 🤘
Btw, I thought he played an Azurglo Ricky?
I could not agree more. They were first rate players with great and, often really funny songs, and Fergal was the icing on the cake. Brilliant band. John Peel knew a goodun when he saw them.
Go Danny.
I just love this band❤❤❤
I discovered them in 1980 while listening to a bootleg tape of an interview with SQUEEZE where they mentioned the Undertones new record being produced by Roger Bechirian who also worked with SQUEEZE. I immediately sought out their records (not an easy feat in 1980 US suburbs). They became and remain one of my favorite bands from the period.
Answer: yes. 'Nuff said!
I really like your videos where you do your own full versions of your favorite songs.
Fantastic video.
Can I suggest you check out The Chords.
They supported The Undertones on occasions. Much underrated band, that should have been huge. Handful of singles and one fantastic album.
Great video. Thanks for putting the work in on this.
Yes they are! Brilliant stuff Danny, this 65 year old enjoyed your article very much, I loved them then and I love them still. My favourite tracks are too numerous to mention but 'Let's Talk About Girls' and 'You've Got My Number' are totally riffalicious. It's also worth a shout to say how completely brilliant 'That Petrol Emotion' were. For me, absolutely one of the best bands in the late 80's and the 90's, especially "End of the Millenium Psychosis Blues'. 😁
Undertones rules!!! I wouldnt mind listning to only Undertones and no other band
The goldfish solution!?!
Benjamin Orr video please (Attempt 106)
They certainly were one of the BEST DRESSED bands out there. Ireland must have had some killer department stores. Slick dudes 😎
Love the Undertones!! How many people have a cousin called Kevin? :D
I love how Sharkey sang in a Derry accent
Day 2 of requesting Justin Pearson from the locust bass tone.
Also you're totally correct about the undertones.
I saw the locust some years ago now supporting Fantomas. Had no idea who they were or what to expect. My god what an experience. Haven’t heard or seen anything like them to this day, mind blowing.
0:30 he’s talking about Boney M here isn’t he. Daddy Cool 😎
Thank you
these long form videos really are something to behold! great playing and i love your yamaha 😍
If any of you haven’t heard the O’Neill brothers follow up band, That Petrol Emotion, they are also well worth checking out. Their song Sensitise, for example, would have been a smash chart hit in a sane world. Then there’s A Natural Kind of Joy, It’s a Good Thing, Cellophane, Big Decision, the list goes on.
Danny Sapko for Prime Minister! This was very good.
So Danny plays with traditional grip on the snare. Interesting. Makes me wonder if he had some marching experience or something, as I think match grip is the most common for most drummers today.
LOVE is your favorite band’s favorite band’s favorite band and influenced so much
I remember discovering this band on the Peel show. Simple sounding but impossible for me to break down the parts on my Woolworths electric guitar (the family radiogram was 'modified' to serve as an amplifier). Your skill and passion shine through sir.
Smashing cover of Hypnotized, which has a real Buzzcocks feel. Wednesday Week and Julie Ocean are also outstanding songs, as well as You Know My Name (Look Up the Number).
Your impression of the struggling, slighty disoriented Bassist is bang on. Bing like "what do they mean by 'count 4 bars and then change to C'? When it feels right I simply place my index finger over there and it sounds just fine" 👏😃
Great review and also great band! I remember digging through my pop's record collection after finding an old record player in the trash and seeing them. They look liked a bunch of dorks with cut off bellbottoms, red docs and knitted sweaters. After hearing them though I grabbed a pair of bellbottoms cut them at the shins and went searching for some red docs.
Thanks!
Such a good band. Feargal had a pretty interesting solo career as well.
👏🔥, I hope that you get the back stage, 😊.
Like deployed 👍
Undertones are still great, I never miss a Dublin gig when they play.
Loving the iconic Yamaha SG, I'd love one..
This is the kinda video I'd make about The Residents if I could.
Saw them at the Hammersmith Odeon back in the day. They were halfway through Satisfaction before we figured out what the hell song it was! Great stuff!
I'd never heard The Undertones until Bob Dylan played "Wednesday Week" on one of his radio show episodes. I immediately introduced that song to my bandmates, and we still often perform it. I've been a fan of their music ever since, and I agree that they're an underrated band.
I'm sure this video took a lot of work to make...thanks for doing so!
I can distinguish some sweet undertones
I grew up in NI during the punk 70's.There were loads of good (and better) punk bands around. The Undertones were always classed as a pop band for the part time rich kid punks. Can't deny their talent in any way though.
you are such a talented geezer!
I loved the old Thunderbones back in the day, like Buzzcocks they had that pop sensibility and weren't bothered about their punk credentials. I will have to revisit their records. It's going to happen.
I think you’d really like a music project my childhood friend did a few years back, named The Losin’ Streaks. The crash meets Hendrix, with my buddy, Mike Farrell’s insanely stellar guitar work
Undertones were amazing but the Stranglers were and still are the best by far
Hi Danny I'll be there on Wednesday been a fan since I heard the "hypnotised" album aged 9 in 1980. Never seen them. Really looking forward to it
