I really appreciate how you didn’t put people down for liking the mass market games, but rather invited them in to our hobby! Definitely something that I appreciated back when I was getting into gaming Also the second camera bit made me lol 😂
My recommendations... - Yahtzee (dice rolling and locking, push your luck): King of Tokyo, Cubitos - Scrabble (word game): Paperback - Uno (card shedding): Scout, Tichu - Connect 4 (pattern building race): Santorini, Yinsh - Risk (area control/war): Small world, Risk: Star Wars edition - Sorry: (Take that games) Survive Escape from Atlantis, Tournament at Camelot - Battleship (deduction, secret deployment): Captain Sonar, Fugitive - Trivial Pursuit (trivia game): Timeline series, Wits and Wagers - Candy Land (racing game): Quest for El Dorado - Clue: Rear Window, Mysterium
@@funnynameyeah it’s pretty different. It’s two player only and has you fighting on 3 different fronts (Endor, space, inside the Death Star). You either play as the Empire trying to wipe out all the rebel ships or as the rebels trying to destroy the Death Star. Once one of those goals is accomplished the game ends. The battlefront you’re fighting on is determined by what action you choose on the multiuse card you played that turn. There’s still a fair amount of risk style dice rolling.
Totally agree. Two people I know who love to say that board games should be called ‘bored games,’ say that the only game they liked in the youth was Monopoly. Coincidence? 😉 BTW, I have tried several times to explain that modern games are not like the games we played as kids. No dice (heh, see what i did there?)
Nah my 8-year-old cousin 4 years ago said it was the best game ever and when I asked him how Lilo and Stitch version was different and with a snobby look he said, “It just is. You wouldn’t understand”.
The bad camera joke was excellent. I have really enjoyed First Empires as a Risk game, and I have also really enjoyed Risk Strike surprisingly. I guess that is like the Monopoly Deal of Risk. BIg Boss has been a really great Monopoly or Acquire replacement, Bohnanza has also been getting a lot of play recently in that regard. Oh! I almost forgot Franchise. Franchise is an amazing Monopoly replacement.
I played Clue for the first time recently (after being in the hobby) and I immediately went out and bought Awkward Guests because it is Clue extreme! Rhino Hero Super Battle is so good and I've been keeping an eye out for a wooden version of Junk Art! Another fun one similar to Jenga is Riff Raff (a little pricey but so worth it).
Another good replacement for classic RISK is the new RISK Strike. You get the basic feel of RISK, with conquering continents through dice battles, but as a quick card and dice game that takes about 20 minutes.
When I was in the Navy in late 90s we always played Axis and Allies while underway.haha We had 6 teams. Example, one controls Eastern US and the other Western. Japan and southern Japan. The losing team buys rounds and/or pays the other half of the food bill for the losing team.haha
It was never one specific character in Clue for my family; it was always, without fail, whichever one my mom was playing the game as. It’s been a long-running joke with us for years. 😂
Rear Window is another game that could replace Clue... I love that they've used some of the characters from the original movie in the game. It sounds like Mike has a cold or allergies. Feel better soon!
I told my grandkids that if they want to play Monopoly with grandma, then they’re going to have to play Cape May. It’s kind of like monopoly because you’re moving around the board and building up properties that will get you more money. I think it’s a lot of fun.
What a great idea for a topic! These kind of tips could really help folks trying to get into the hobby focus in on some things they might enjoy. Nice thorough coverage of why you made your picks too!
Great idea for a video! I like First Rat as a sub for Candy Land. You still go along a path but you collect different resources at certain spots. You can steal upgrades at various points on the path if you want, but than you have to go back to the beginning of the path if you do. You can also spend resources to use tunnels to advance further up the path. It’s got a fun, silly theme but allows for much more agency in how you move along the path. It’s a super fun game!
I keep saying Great Western Trail is the true successor to Monopoly. You run around a track, buy/build property, people pay you to pass on your land, you make money when you complete a loop. It's basically the same game.
Really clever and fun video!!! Great way to honor the classics that provided a lot of foundation and inspiration for further development of games. Thanks for putting together!! Really enjoyed!!
I loved the goosebumps choose your adventure books as a kid. Above and below is a favorite of mine. Another choice is also the choose your own adventure house of danger.
Monopoly - high rise (just as long and not terribly complex, but really mean - food chain magnate) Risk - imperial 2030; nexus ops Clue - awkward guests or mystery of the abbey Sorry - cosmic encounter or steam up Guess who - definitely dinosaur tea party
Here are my replacements; 1. Monopoly--> Suburbia; Acquire 2. Clue--> Any Arkham Horror type game; Spy Fall 3. Jenga--> i don't have a game that fits (that I've played) 4. Connect Four-->Ticket to Ride; Azul 5. Guess Who? --> Bang! The Dice Game 6. Choose Your Own Adventure--> Near and Far (Scythe a little bit) 7. Risk--> Risk Legacy; Root; Small World; Supremacy 8. Sorry and Candyland--> Talisman, Various racing games 10. Life-->Campaign games where characters get items (LCGs, Near and Far, etc). The Pursuit of happiness sounds like a perfect fit, but I haven't played it (yet). Great list!
I would certainly pay to see the result of introducing people who are familiar with games on the difficulty level of Cluedo straight into Arkham Horror. I think the "Horror" would stick for a while.
Clue alternative I would have said Awkward Guests or Scandoloh! From megacorpin. Quarto is one of our most played. We have the mini one and fits in a business card case and a neoprene mat. My Dad also made us a giant version for our wedding.
My recommendation is Kill Doctor Lucky. This is kind of like a reverse clue where you want to be the killer. You're in a mansion with a bunch of rooms and you have to essentially chase Dr Lucky and successfully make a kill before anyone else. It's so funny and great for bigger parties like 6-8
For me Chinatown is a great Monopoly replacement. Fun and dramatic negotiation, but fun for all and doesn't last 5 hours. Men at Work is a great Jenga replacement as well as Junky Art.
Any good suggestions for a Labyrinth replacement? It was our favorite childhood game and I think we would love a version meant for adults. Great video guys!
The second camera joke made me giggle As someone with mild-medium face blindness, I can't figure out why Mike looks so different in this video. Did he shave? Is it the hat? Is it my imagination?
I was going to suggest the same thing. Awkward Guests is really good: find the murderer, the weapon and the motive, but much less chaotic and prone to luck of the dice than Clue.
Great video, love the topic. I thought you had great suggestions for all but the Candy Land where I thought your suggestions were too much of a jump in complexity; I personally can't think of better suggestions, but I think they'd need to be simpler to be the best replacements.
Yeah someone else pointed that out and I think that’s fair. For that one we didn’t consider just how simple candyland is and we definitely made a big jump in complexity
If you want a 10x better version of Sorry! And you own Sorry! Simply play the game with a hand of three cards. Play a card and draw back to 3 card hand each turn. Luck factor goes way down and fun and speed goes way up.
@@TheBrothersMurph I was so sick of waiting for the move a pawn from base card that I said to my kids “This game stinks. Ok, next time we are playing with a 3 card hand. And, you can sacrifice playing a card to discard your whole hand and draw 3 new cards.” Then we started and were all “What game is this! It is amazing!”
Great list, but forgive, I have one very small issue with the suggestions to replace Candyland. The Adventure Book games look great, but are recommended for ages 10+, and Candyland is for ages 3+. Can you recommend some games that fall into that age range so they can truly replace Candyland?
Hedgehog roll, Disney It’s a Small World, disney Mickey and the beanstalk is 4+. I’ve personally never played candyland but maybe the new Key to the Kingdom is similar. It’s 6+.
Yeah, this is a very good point. When we were replacing a Candyland, we weren’t considering the complexity and definitely chose things that were significantly more complex.
Thank you! I was born in 1975 and had much older siblings so played Whosit! Even as a young child I thought it was kind of fun but too easy. I'm intrigued by the lying aspect of the dinosaur tea party game. Looking to expand my collection for smart but young kids.
So the correct answer for Clue is Tim Curry, there is no other correct answer. For Candy Land, use the advanced rules, draw 2 cards then choose one. It provides children with a choice to take, and you also never go backwards... Well almost never and generally speeds the game up too!
Catan is nothing to replace another game. Catan needs to be replaced! A game in which you roll dice for ressources is such a dusty mechanism. Why is Catan still hyped? I would only play that game with the cities and knights expansion because then at least it gets close to real modern board games. For experienced players or new players that have no issue with starting directly with heavier games: replace Catan with Terra Mystica / Age of Innovation or Clans of Caledonia.
That's fair but keep in mind that this is aimed at folks who are transitioning from mass market kid games to modern strategic board games. we ourselves have moved on from CATAN as well but some of those things like rolling dice and getting stuff are really familiar for people and so this game serves as a nice bridge into modern games. Some feelings of the old with some of the new. we gotta get people here and throwing age of innovation at them when they last played hi ho cheerio, might just melt their brain ya know? we gotta bring people in slow.
@@TheBrothersMurph Well, there are enough mid-weight modern games. I dont get what Catan has in common with Monopoly anyways. Other options might be: Machi Koro Concordia For Sale Ticket to Ride

No need to put people down. We just want people playing board games, we don’t care which ones!
I immediately subscribed after the camera bit 😂. For the record, I’m already subscribed on another device!

Is the star wars edition of risk particullarly different to OG risk?

I truly cannot believe anyone's favorite childhood game was Monopoly. It was basically a box we opened when we were looking for a fight.
Some may say that was their favorite thing to do though
I played monopoly a lot and don’t remember any fights. You win some you lose some.

This is the best video. I have been wanting to make something like this all year. Good on you boys for actually doing it.
Another good replacement for classic RISK is the new RISK Strike. You get the basic feel of RISK, with conquering continents through dice battles, but as a quick card and dice game that takes about 20 minutes.
Monopoly Deal is a deceptively fun game. Affordable, accessible, quick, and easy to learn-great pick!
It’s a banger! And it’s $10 at target
Great suggestions! If i had to add any it would be...
Clue: betrayal at house on the hill
Risk: axis and allies
Candyland: oasis

I consider machi koro a lot like monopoly. Grab properties and if someone rolls the right number time for them to pay up
A great and new replacement for Clue is Almost Innocent. Great deduction while being cooperative. Such a great game.
And awkward guests
Great video! Love that you're focusing towards new people.
(But it was super weird to not hear even one "Praise Be!!") 😮
I appreciated your subscribe gag - very fun!😂
