Thank you! I have been analyzing why water enters our nose. I had to take a video and slow it down to figure it out so I could give you an easy solution and I finally got it!
But first we need to understand why water enters your nose and why it is so painful.
Water doesn’t enter your nose when you are facing down, that is if you don’t inhale. This is because there is air that won’t let is pass. But when you move your head to breath, in that little space of time when your head is sideways but not out of the water yet, those bubbles escape your nose and they go to the surface and water goes into your nose. The same thing can happen when you con back from taking a breath to put your face back in the water.
It is painful because inside your nose there are a lot of nerve endings, it is warm and because it is a salty environment. The water of the pool is cold and not salty. That is why it hurts but how come more experienced swimmers don’t get water up their noses while swimming? Sometimes we do, but the main reason is that we are so used to our nose being around water that we have an immediate reflex of blowing bubbles out.
So how can you, a beginner, start developing that reflex without pain? It is simple! Start practicing with a nose clip. Water will not enter your nose, you will start learning how to breathe through your mouth and since your mouth is more accustomed to being around water, you will intake less water or maybe nothing at all.
Before you start thinking, “but hey! I already look ridiculous enough with the swim cap and goggles, I don’t need a nose clip!” You are right. But even to best Olympic swimmers use it too! So you are in great company!
They Usually use it for backstroke for another reason that we will go over in another video.
Once you get used to breathing through your mouth, you can start doing drills without the nose clip like these. Click here to watch a video about this in more detail.

Swim fast!
Great tip! Same tip we give to beginner and advanced swimmers looking to understand their balance better. Just makes learning so much easier and confidence comes quicker. Nothing to be ashamed of, many of the best competitive and all of the synchro swimmers use clips. And free divers use even bigger ones.
Thank you for bringing this up! A lot of trainers have a dismissive approach to using nose clip, saying that swimmers should learn to get rid of the water by exhaling through the nose at all times. But I find that in certain head positions (side breathing / flipping attempts), water get in and hurt no mater how hard I try to counter them with blowing bubbles through the nose. I think that any solution to make front crawl drills more effective and less painful, is absolutely welcome. Great video!
Try to hum out the air. While you are doing this you are blowing air through your nose. Water can not enter your nose.
Synchronized swimmers (me) use every practice noseclip
True!
I can block my nose from the inside, like a muscle contracts and blocks it off near the top of the throat. No water can get in when I do this. Discovered it from swimming as a child, thought lots of people could do this but I've found no one that can? Anyone else able to do this?
@@virtual-adam omg yes lol! Same, I thought no one else could do it 😂
@@auntierajindasasmr7525 Well I'm not alone then :)

Thank you SO MUCH for discussing this. I have been working on the front crawl and breathing correctly for a month or so. I usually get some water in my nose and it is frustrating. I do use a nose clip when I use my snorkel, so now I will use it while I learn my breathing techniques for this too. I hadn't used it for this because I watched videos that said you should be exhaling through your nose and that's impossible with the news clip. However, after seeing the videos of professional swimmers using nose clips I don't worry about using it myself. Also, I loved that you said we may feel we look ridiculous with the goggles and the cap! I certainly felt that way when I first started trying to swim laps. LOL now I don't care I'm just hoping, eventually, to get the breathing down.
Don't use noseclips! Hear me out: breathing out, under water, through your nose (vs mouth) is much easier and more natural than being forced to breathe out of your mouth. Because with these nose clips you can't breathe out through your nose anymore, duh! So work through and develop the technique and natural reflex which you need so that this become normal to you, it's worth the effort in the long run! And you will develop this habit naturally by just swimming, it just takes a little time ;) If you are a competitive swimmer like the pro's in the videos, you might have your reasons to use these clips like it is said in the video, sure. But all these pro's shown in the video can swim e.g. freestyle without any noseclips without (nearly) any water in their noses.
You are right, I used nose clip when I learned swimming now I cannot swim without nose clip its frustrating 😠
But I run out of air when I exhale when I’m doing underwater dolphin kicks in backstroke
For me, my vision obscures whenever i swallow my saliva or yawn. And i cant swim belly down. Oddly i can only swim by floating belly up and holding my beeath to stay floating. I have to breath out ans quickly inhale and hold, repeat between breaths or i sink and wont be able to recover.
I can only exhale out of my nose for 3 seconds max though! So I can’t last underwater and I just about pass out if I try it
Sinus issues
Thank you so much for this! I really love swimming but I’m not the best and this one time I breathed in so much water through my mouth I couldn’t breathe for a couple of seconds but I’m still not gonna give up! I’m gonna ask my mom to buy goggles and the nose clip to start out and go a little bit under water and take it from there, again thank you so much!
Me: ok easy..

Thank you! I learned to swim as an adult and im still not very good at it. The nose in the water has plagued me and gets in the way. I wont jump in or swim if i cant touch the bottom. I hold my breath and stop to take air as when i have tried while swimming the water goes up my nose. I have used a nose clip in the past but felt as though I needed to learn without it, my rational was that I may not have it in an emergency situation like falling in the sea. However, i've come to my senses and going to get my nose clip and get swimming. I can always try learning later when I feel more confident in the water in general. Video is a great visual and reminder. Thank you so much. Good luck everyone!
During swimming I notice a difference in how easily water enters my nose related to how I position my head; looking slightly forward (angle 40°) water does not easily enter my nose. But when facing straight down to the bottom of the pool e.g. when adopting arrow position, water almost always wants to enter my nose and I have to blow bubbles hard to prevent that happening.
Same!!! When I look down (the proper technique) water goes in my nose. But when I look up for a bit, the water doesn’t go up my nose.
I just got back into swimming after like 10 years since i was a teen. Ouch my nose. Thank you so much
코로 물이 넘어온다고요? 간단한 해결책. 자유형 호흡.
Water up your nose Quick easy fix. Freestyle swimming breathing.

When I go under I have tried to blowed out before and when going underwater but it still gets in my nose. I have also tried not breathing at all but it still goes up. However I can plug my nose and underwater I can unplug it and it’s perfectly fine. HELP I just want to swim without plugging my nose at all
When I started freestyle swimming I breathed out very fast, in a panic mode not to have water enter my nose. Then I figured how little air is needed to prevent water from entering your mouth actually. It's a lot easier now.
How do you breathe while turning though? Thanks
So ur saying if I put my head backwards in the bath and breath a little through my nose the water won't go in there I'm terrified to try
I love your videos you explain so well
Great channel guys. I am a completely different swimmer after watching your videos for a year now.
Here's an idea/request for a future video. I would like to hear your opinions on season (and week) planning for fitness - not competitive - swimmers. For example, should I focus on kick work, aerobic work, technique work, or something else at the beginning of the season, and then move on to speed work or higher intensity work (and for how long)? Also, what could be a good way to partition the week (e.g. one day kick, one day drills, one day aerobic, two days dryland, or should I mix them all each day)? Thanks, and keep up the great work.
“dONT speND A loT of MONey tho” 🤣
I finally mastered swimming without getting inside my nose by breathing like this video shows; regardless, I use nose clips, because the pool water irritates me so much. I swim to feel better, not to suffer.
Please do more how to lift while swimming
Loved your videos amazing work guys very helpful please make a tutorial on how to stop water from entering nose face up underwater dolphin difficult but you people can crack it with knowledge & skill .
Is it bad that my nose filled with water while submerged? I have developed tolerance when water enters in my nose.
I didn't swim for years, even when on the beach I don't really go to deep zones. Now I'm trying to re learn because here is so cold to cycling (my number 1 sport) but I find myself with water entering from not only the nose just by standing still and facing down, but also some water entering from the ear canal. It's irritating and I get out of air all the time!
sir... what should we do when water enters your nose nd causes pain?? plzzzz answer.. 🙏
Great video cinematography
Hi I watched a lot of videos from your channel and it is very insightful. Here I have a complete opposite problem when I swimming long distance (400-1600m), my mouth is painfully dry, since I breathe with my mouth. Some said it is because my pool temperature is too high, but I don't know. Any thoughts?
It is a very good video. Thanks
I swear. It is so uncomfortable for me to go under water without plugging my nose. I’ve used nose clips throughout my whole life, but can’t locate one that’s strong enough to allow me to learn to swim and dive professionally. I want to find the right one first. Is the one you presented in the video the strong enough to do all of this? I also want to go on tall water slides where we land in the deep end. I never knew professional swimmers used nose clips before. People in my family would start bullying me when using them but I do my best to ignore them.
a lot of people have a intolerance to the chemicals in the pool which aggravates the sinus and causes inflammation
Very short and simple. Thanks
I think water went up my nose. Is that a problem? If water went up my nose what should I do?
How come no one talks about closing your nostril holes by flexing those muscles at the back of your throat? Kinda like when your nose is blocked from a cold. I find when I close my nostrils as I come up, I never have issues with water. Easier than constantly blowing out.
I did that but whenever you'd relax those muscles when gasping for air, the water was already all the way up to those muscles and would just enter my throat.
I feel like I'm about to have a heart attack after 25m freestyle and need like 40secs to get my heart rate back. I'm hearing that the way to avoid this is by exhaling through the nose because in that case I actually have less CO2 in my lungs. Do you have any comment on this issue?
So basically don’t breathe through the nose when free style swimming?
When I'm face-up underwater water slips on my throat through my nose DESPITE the fact that I'm constantly blowing bubbles... I need to blow them really hard to avoid getting water in my nose. I am not beginner, it's been this way from the beginning. This is ridiculous because I see a lot of swimmers barely even blowing only little bubbles yet their nose doesn't get flooded face-up. Moreover, at least 70 people (most of them don't even swim regurarly and have never been swimmers) who I asked can do the face-up nose equalization underwater (pushing just enough air not to let water in, but not to release bubbles either) and guess what, they either didn't have to practice this, or learnt it in a day or two...
Why am I a genetic garbage?
Try to hum out the air. You can not hum without blowing air through your nose. It works.
snorted a half cup into my sinuses with a flip turn and I’m going on day 5 of a massive headache. might not get back in the pool.
Amazing vid., it helped a lot. Thx!
I think it has happened to me. Should I do something about it? If I should then what should I do?
Oh and if water is stuck in your nose how can you tell, and what dose it feel like?
You did not tell how to prevent water goes to nose without the nose clip, I learned swimming with nose clip and it was a big mistake, now I depended to nose clip and I can not swim without it
Love this channel
Thanks!
What is the brand of good and durable nose clip! I have bought a cheap one two times and it's broken from the middle I used to use nose clip and enjoy swimming and breathing from mouth with it.
I don't use any brand I just order the cheapest of amazon but i use the one with a wire. It has never broken before
Great sir
I have another problem. When I turn my head up, water comes into my ear. How to fix it?
So ur saying if I put my head backwards in the bath and breath a little through my nose the water won't go in there I'm terrified to try
Do they stay on when diving off diving boards?
Whenever i try to swim to the bottom of a pool i get water up my nose when im facing my head down and it's kinda impossible getting to the bottom when standing up still only using ur arms and legs because the bouyance force pulls me up
I think water got in my nose? Should I me concerned? Should I do something about it?
I wouldn't call myself a really skilled swimmer but water in my nose has never bothered me and it's not painful at all, i don't even feel it when doing backstroke underwaters...
But every time when i hit the wardrobe after, i start sneezing like crazy, and my nose gets absolutely completely blocked.
I have a blocked nose like 90% of the time and sometimes it develops into sinusitis and then pneumonia :(
Should i consider getting nose clips in times of having a chronically blocked nose?
Well for me it hurts:(
Oh 😮 yeah I know some people that don’t have a problem with water up their noses but I don’t think it’s healthy. So I would advice a nose clip also
I just looked funny with a nose plug, but it keeps the water out which is good! 😂😂
this is helpful for competitive swimmers, but i just wanted to get the sparkling water out of my nose :(
Oh thx for the tips
I had a request from you. Usually I love to do breaststroke and fly but in fly I not able to do create a hip drive from my fly stroke .
So if u can upload the next video for hip drive in fly .
Thanks
Is IT dangerouers
Unfortunately this only covers normal swimming not face up swimming which is the actual problem.
Should ve seen this before swimming freestyle in the salty sea of Perú
Thank You!!
I don’t get water in my nose in freestyle
Thanks!
Trying to gt to level 2 but I just need to swim with my head underwater
I have a lot of trouble with this
Wish my nose wasnt almost unusable bc of deviated septum.
Its not painfull but i have allergic. And when water enter my nose i get runny nose thus make hard to bubbling
I got one of them but it didn’t work it kept coming off
Did you buy a metal one?
water enters my ear
Great
Great great
Doesn't work, they pached it in the latest version.
Voldy356 shut up
Just tell me how to swim without a nose clip and without the pain😒
Blow bubbles
Skills NT Swimming I tried that and it felt like I was drowning
@@savandtay6818 It's very difficult. That is why I recommend a nose clip. It is like having training wheels when you learn to ride a bike. After a while when you swim with it you get used to breathing only through your mouth and you completely block usage of your nose while breathing and when you take it off it is a lot easier to breathe without getting water up your nose.
Skills NT Swimming Ik, it’s hard finding a nose clip where I live and I had to do to another state to get one, I tried the nose clip a few weeks ago and when I was underwater, the nose clip feel off and my nose was burning like crazy
Question, how to avoid swallowing water?
