Hi Ian, many thanks for your thorough and enthusiastic reviews! I think I've watched most of them after getting back into hifi this year now my children have grown up (enough to stop damaging things!). I got my old Rega Planar 3 from the loft, some linn ninka speakers and some linn Aktiv amps. Based on your reviews I initially bought the Schitt mani to upgrade on the integrated amplifier I was initially using, wow what a difference! I then took my time to decide on the new cartridge to upgrade my old Ortofon 510mkii. I finally went for the MP150 about a month ago, and now it has bedded in I am blown away. I can sit for hours on the evening listening to music now, it is so addictive! Everything sounds so real, natural and in the room. The bass hits you in the chest. You can hear every ring of the cymbal and the crack in the voice of the singers. I'm totally hooked again, thank you Ian, your effort is very much appreciated, what a great job. Great to see your home city on your shopping trips too. I'm really hoping you do some new videos soon. Kind regards, Ian.

Hi Ian, in November, I purchased Nagaoka MP-150 cartridge, brand new and sealed in box, for $250. A couple of weeks later I purchased a Mofi Ultradeck without a cartridge. After about 40 minutes of setting up the turntable and another 45 mins installing and adjusting the Nagaoka, I had my new setup. The sound was fantastic! My records sounded better than ever! Now, almost four months later the sound is better than ever! I can't believe the detail and sound stage that I am getting. I thought the MP-110 was great, but the MP-150 is much, much better sound. The only thing with this new setup is that bad pressings are easier to find. There are some LP's in my collection that I thought were okay with my previous system that now sound horrible. Not because of the system, but because of the pressing. Great pressings sound unbelievable on this system. I also run the TT through a Schiit Mani. Thank you for all you do! It really helped me out!

Thank you very much Ian for keeping in touch with your devoted viewers! YOU were my inspiration that lead me to Nagaoka. I've been a vinyl and turntable enthusiast for many years and even the MP-110 outshines ANY Ortofon, Shure, Audio Technica or Grado cartridges I've used in the past. When it comes to quality, the Japanese REALLY know how to impress!! Cheers and I always look forward to any videos you post! This compliment comes to you ALL the way from Toronto Ontario, Canada!!

    Hi Ian,
Thanks for your review of this cart. It was the main reason I bought it. Oh my goodness...Ortofons going in the bin! This Nagaoka MP-150 is Mental! Huge sound stage. Bass dynamics, sibilance control (!!!) and extended treble. Out of this world for the price. It's like I'm listening to a new version of the same songs I've heard a million times before. So much detail in the sound. Wow. Get on it people. Listening to Roy Brooks - The Free Slave (Muse MR 5003, 1970) is like I'm there in the room...

Yes, this test shows the Nagaoka is very good! I tried several Ortofons over the years, and never kept one, because I never liked one. They sound dead in a bad way. Even a cheap Sumiko Oyster, which has been criticised here in a bad way, is near and dear to me for some records compared to any Ortofon, even expensive ones :)

    Hi Ian,
I hope all is well? I just wanted to let you know, I’m glad your on our side. In your TT shoot out the P1 beat out the project debut which I have. I have add all the upgrades to my project debut even the mp110. I really enjoyed the sound coming from the mp110, which you recommended. You were also spot on with the quality of the mani also. I just swapped out the Nagaoka mp110 for the mp150 in my debut carbon and wow! I spent 4 hours playing records, like always Ian your right again. The cartridge is not broken in yet, and I can’t believe the sound it’s producing. Thank you Ian for all your recommendations you provide to your subscribers.

    Hi from Jamaica,
"Master Class" "Show Off" That did it for me ;) Getting back in the game! Just purchased the MP-150H. I will be mounting on a new Denon DP-450 through a Parasound HALO Hint6 phono stage. Hope this synergy works! Thanks for your great reviews. They helped a lot in my decision. Was very close to Ortofon Blue/Bronze but coming from an Audio Technica AT440MLA, I'm hoping for something a little warmer, not dull but less bright. I did love that AT cartridge though but sold it along with my Rega P5....Kinda regretting that but was necessary at the time. Making my way back up:)
I think for my current TT, the MP-150 is where to stop for diminishing return reasons...
Great Job and thanks again for your hard work.
    Cheers

Hello Ian I would just like to express my gratitude for you work and this video in particular the performance is of fantastic performance per buck and altough the ML from Hana is excellent for strings and vocals and airyness its no match. Its crazy truly crazy. I was showing it to Niklas and he was so impressed.

      @HiViNywschannel  3 роки тому +2

Yes Buddy, it is crazy that many things can't match up to the MP-150. Those who have come around, to notice its superlative performance for its price and the easy match with the Mani or Rega Aria that will bring MM performance to highs and shame to much LOMC expensive setups with expensive LOMC phonostages!!!
😄😄😄thank you for catching up yet again Brother!!!!

I have just recently found the urge to start a vinyl setup. This came about by my father in law gifting me his Technics SL-Q2 turntable. It being the age it is, I figured I would change the existing cart (Sure 70 EJ) for something new. Knowing nothing about the vinyl hobby, I did a bit of research and I landed here, on your channel. I just have to say, WOW! Your reviews are amazing! I'm somewhat of a stickler when it comes to sound, music reproduction and stereo equipment. With just a few of your reviews, I'm confident I will make the right choice for my new cart. Keep up the great work. Thank you. (from Canada)

Just bought a turntable after not having one for about 25 years and quickly acquiring lots of records.
I have spent about 3 hours tonight watching your videos. My brain hurts from all the information that it just took in, haha. But it's a good hurt. I currently have the om5e cartridge and I dreaded to hear in your review what I suspected myself about it. : ( but I plan to upgrade to one of these Nagaoka cartridges, soon as well as a proper phono stage or phono pre-amp. The om5e only has about 10 hours of listening time on it so far and I understand that you have to give them a lot longer than that to break in properly . I'm impressed with your extensive listening and analysis.
    Cheers.

Hello Ian greetings from London. Love your analogy in one of your vids that describes listening to high quality digital replay as listening in HD 2D, while analogue is listening in HD 3D. This sums up the critical difference clearly and perfectly. Couldn't have put it better myself, so well done!

I replaced a dynavector 10x 5 with the 110 and a schitt preamp after dynavector wanted to charge me @500 for a replacement , new combination is cheaper, easier to mount , doesn’t take 1 year to break in and doesn’t.Suffer from cantilever collapse. 90% of the sound at 2/3 the price and no dynavector price gouging!. I truly respect this man!

Hi Ian, Happy New Year! Best wishes for you and family. I enjoy all your video reviews. I appreciate the time you spend and your honest opinion on each. I am moving up from a Teac TN -350 with a MP-110 / Mani combo in which I love the sound to a Rega P6. 😀It’s currently on back order. I plan on using the MP-110 on the P6. I like the warmth and centered mid range of the 110. So in your opinion for future upgrade do you think the Nagaoka MP-150 or MP-200 would keep with basic sound signature of the MP-110, without becoming analytical or bright? Thanks buddy. Sincerely Jon T

Thank you for another good test! It is important to have these samples, because there are not many stores anymore, where one can listen and chose according to one's personal ear. Also thank you for making high resolution files for downloading and listening. They made me happy and proved I can rest and enjoy what I have, because I would have to spend a lot to get better than what I have! Best value used to be a used cartridge body (IF you have some old bodies already hidden in some graveyard) and a Jico SAS stylus. I bought 3 SAS styli when I had better income some years ago. 5 years ago the SAS was about USD 130 a piece. Now it is around 300. While improved with cantilevers made with ruby or saphire, testers had a hard time finding differences to the old affordable stylus. Now LP-Tunes and LP-Gear have their own Vivid Line replacement stylus. They run between 80 and 120 dollars. I tried one, which was 80 dollars. The tonal balance is different, but many people actually like it better. It has a stronger midrange than the Jico SAS. I still like the SAS better, for its finer detail in the high treble, but not for 3 times the price! Combine a Vivid Line and old Shure cartridge with a V-bottom (they are all the same, except the V15 series), like an M95, M97, R47XT, R25XT, etc, and the result is amazing and plays in a class 2 or 3 times the price. My old Radio Shack Realistic R47XT bodies and Vivid Line NDC stylus leave nothing to be desired. For a person on a tight budget and a stash of old bodies, there is nothing better. Other good candidates for Vivid Line would be old Pickering, Stanton, or Elac bodies. But I think, if you do not have one of these old bodies, then Nagaoka, Audio Technica, or Goldring would be a best buy, because many sellers charge too much for old used bodies that may or may not work. Thanks to you, there are now several comparisons, that give us direct comparisons of cartridges, so we can chose the ones that are most pleasing to our ears :) From your samples, my ears like all three. Best buy in U.S.A. on a tight budget is still the VM95EN, but Nagaoka is certainly awfully good :)

This is the day we have all been waiting for... Thank you Ian for your hard work, dedication and thorough reviews. This series has been a gift to vinyl fans new and old. Again, many thanks for the kindness and friendship you show all of us. My only complaint is it is Monday and you are distracting me from my work because now I cannot stop thinking of going home and listening to records. =)Now I have to go purchase a Nagaoka MP-150 for future use. I still have my new Goldring 2500 stylus to use but once that stylus is ready to go I will have the Nagaoka waiting in the wings to be deployed.

    Hi Ian,
Thanks for spending time and money to do unbiased reviews after reviews for us. I really can't imagine the space and time you need for your subsequent reviews which will involve budget turntables (take up space after your review), since space and time is such a premium in Singapore! After convincing myself to get the MP-110, I had months of blissfulness listening to music. While I hold off and considering whether to upgrade to MP-150 because of how good MP-110 already is, "bad" thing (or good, depending on how you look at it) happened at such opportune time that I recently miscued the MP-110 that it drops to the side of the platter! A few days later, MP-150 was on my table :)
To share my experience, when I listened to Diana Krall's Devil May Care, even before the cart was fully run in, I immediately noticed the followings superiority of the MP-150 in comparison with MP-110:
    - Base: more punchy and constantly noticeable; more tactile as well
    - Dynamic: micro-dynamic is easily picked up; passage that appears "flat" previously is no longer so
    - Timing: fast and accurate; together with improved dynamic, I begin to realize how good the drummer is and how emotional the vocal of Diana
When I first cued up this song, I thought I accidentally set the turntable speed to 45rpm (my copy of Diana is 33rpm) because the song appeared "fast". I double checked and the speed was correct. Then it struck me that it appeared "fast" because the micro-dynamism revealed by the cart enabled me to hear the subtle beats in between what I previously could! So, yes, like what you have said, if one has work hard and save for this cart, it is money well spent! Thanks again for the recommendation, Ian. I hope there is no other VC member reporting here that he/ she suddenly miscues the MP-110 after this as this will be really "unfortunate" :P

:-D :-D :-D Thank you for telling us all about it, the graduation from MP-110 to MP-150!!...
Now here's the funny bit, brother and friend: I have miscued the MP110 pretty early on in the GroupB test weeks and landed on the side of the platter too!.. and thus I bought one more to replace it as well!!!! Hi five!!!!!
      :-D Sincerely,

...dear brother, and thank you for understanding and thinking about this:
"I really can't imagine the space and time you need for your subsequent reviews which will involve budget turntables (take up space after your review)"
The preparations I have to do, .... is back-breaking and extremely time-consuming........
I can't even bring myself to explain everything to you now... hahahaha... argh....
ok, e.g. I need to spend 2 days throwing out a lot of things from my storeroom to make space for these turntable boxes, and thereafter the storage of these turntables on yet another Ikea cabinet in the storeroom, tidied so many things up...
I took about 1 week in total to set everything up logistically to then order and bring these turntables in...
Okay, i shall stop now ":-D

Even though these are old videos they are still very useful and informative. A thousand thank-yous for reviewing the Nagaoka 150. Based on your review I bought one for $300 plus shipping. My jaw dropped!! The difference is unbelievable. The cleanliness, the clarity, the separation and presence... WOW! I was using a Sure V15 iii with Jico stylus on my Pioneer PLL PL-550, Denon AMP and Klipsch Forte speakers. I heard pianissimos never before heard...symbals and strokes not present before I am blown away beyond words. Now I need to buy more records. :-) Thanks and keep up the good, and very enthusiastic work. Now I need another MP-150 for the Pioneer PLX-1000 turntable that I ordered... it's going to get expensive, LOL!

Ian, two questions for you, if you don't mind. I have a Rega Planar 3 (2016) and based on your awesome review, I have purchased the Nagaoka MP-150 cartridge to replace my Rega Elys2. Question 1: There are various opinions about this on the web. With the Planar 3 / RB330 tonearm, is a 2mm spacer required to utilize the MP-150? I have not attempted to install the MP-150 since I am hoping to know if the spacer is needed.Question 2 and unrelated to cartridge installation: Is it normal for electrical hum to become noticeable as the tonearm/cartridge get closer to the center spindle (and the motor)? I don't have ground noise... it really like a warm hum. While music is playing it's not very noticeable, but it is there in the background and you can hear it in quieter passages of a record track.

    • @HiViNywschannel
      @HiViNywschannel  6 років тому +1

Dear Jeff, :-D hi, great to see you again! Okay, qn1: yes, I use 6mm to 8mm spacer height to get the Nagaoka to track at 91.6degrees of SRA (Stylus Rake Angle.), can be easily done! I bought 4 of the Rega aluminium 2mm ones. One can also get the aftermarket adjustable 2-4-6-8mm one. Qn2: I do not think it is usual for electrical hum to set in when the cartridge tracks closer to the spindle. I really apologize for that, as I do not think so. This is more likely to occur with poorly shielded cartridges matched with poorly engineered direct drive motors. You may want to ask your Rega retailer why that is happening to your Rega Elys2 cart on your P3 :-). I have zero hum on my P3 running the MP-110 or MP-150. Absolutely zero, even on silent passages. I am sure you will have the same. Warmest Regards buddy. You will succeed.

    • @QuantumJ67
      @QuantumJ67 6 років тому +2

HiViNyws channel Ian, as always, your advice is spot-on. I just installed my MP-150 and now my Rega P3 is a completely different instrument altogether. I didn’t realize how poor that Rega Elys2 cartridge really is.(My table and cart were brand new in January but the cart was replaced by Rega under warranty within a week due to distortion. The second one was Just OK.) It doesn’t do the Rega brand any favors. This MP-150 is a world apart. And guess what? All the motor noise/hum that would encroach as the tonearm approached the spindle... GONE!!! It was the crummy cart all along!
One more question, and I hate to keep bugging you. Can you recommend a counterweight? The stock one no longer fits beneath the dustcover with the spacer installed. I can’t close the lid ( but having to invest in a different counterweight is worth the cost now that the music is improved and the hum is banished!).
I am over the moon. Thanks again for your recommendations of the MP-150 and the Schiit Mani. (Mani replaced my one month old Cambridge CP1). The quality of the sound I get is at least 100% improved.

Well Ian, now you've gone an done it.
Months ago I asked you if you'd do a compare on B&O vs traditional tt's and cartridges. You kindly explained that the only B&O TT's out there are at least a decade or two old, so it would be impossible to have a consistent subject for testing.
I've now ordered a new, Soundsmith cartridge for my B&O tx2 turntable, and thanks to your enthusiastic and scientific testing, I also ordered a mint SL-1200 mk2 and a new Nagaoka MP-150.
Now I can compare my trusty old B&O turntable with a new smmc3 cartridge to a decent traditional TT & cartridge. Can't wait for everything to arrive and start playing with it. I've enjoyed B&O's since 1980, but always wondered what it was like "on the other side". Now I can be impressed by a new SoundSmith cartridge on my B&O, or make the leap to the other technology. Either way it will be a great adventure!
I feel confident that the MP-150 is the best cartridge for my budget.
Thank you for all the work you do and for your inspiration!
    You're the best!
    Mark

      @@HiViNywschannel Dear Ian,
I am honored that you actually remember this conversation, considering the thousands of messages you must get!
I am half way through the testing as of last night.
I got the SL1200+MP150 running a week ago but I had to wait for The Sound Smith to build me a new SMMC3.
So the only comparison I have done so far is the SL1200+MP150 against the B&O TX-2 +20 year old MMC3 cartridge.
The old MMC3 cartridge's suspension was starting to seize up so there really was no comparison between it and the new MP-150.
The MP-150 blew the MMC3 away in every aspect. Lows were deeper without being boomy and had much more detail and color, letting me hear the strings of the bass and how they were being struck with great detail. Mid range and highs were also much more full of detail and life, allowing me to hear voices, breathing, various percussion instruments that I didn't even know existed on a track.
Needless to say, I didn't get much sleep this week, listening to LP's and tracks that I've listened to for years, except now hearing so much more!
Again, this really was not a fair test, since the MMC3 was so old and showing signs of wearing out already.
One thing in B&O's favor. The TX-2 turntable is more precise in it's movements and easier and safer to drop the needle on specific tracks. Also, the TX-2 suspension is incredible. I can wrestle with my 2 Boxers (70LB dogs) a meter in front of the TX-2 and the needle always tracks perfectly. The SL is heavier and has what looks like a sophisticated double isolation system and looks like it would perform as well, but it is FAR from as good as the B&O where isolation is concerned. I can sit up a little bit fast in my recliner and make the needle skip on the SL1200.
I have noticed that the B&O is running a slight bit fast, compared to the SL1200 with it's constant speed indication and easy, immediate pitch control. The B&O TX-2 pitch is controlled by tiny adjustment pots inside the unit, requiring partial disassembly to adjust... therefore, one would have to check speed, disassemble, turn the pot a little, reassemble, check speed and repeat until you finally guessed right. The B&O 2402 that I had for the first 20 years had pitch control on top of the plinth, next to the speed select controls... but only one pitch control for both of the speeds. But at least you could actually get to it and adjust pitch if you had a strobe/chart to run.
      Now for the disappointing part:
The Sound Smith SMMC3 arrived yesterday afternoon. I was really anxious to see how it stacked up against the MP-150.
I did some fresh critical listening to the MP-150 and then swapped out the TT's.
When I installed the SMMC3 (SoundSmith) I noticed that it sat with a very pronounce angle... pointing the cartridge 3 or more degrees off-tangent.
It was pointing away from the record grooves so much, that I could see it from 5 feet away.
I put the original MMC3 back in and it was perfectly aligned.
I got my spare TX-2 and MMC3 out and mixed and matched cartridges and TT's and the SMMC3 always sat at an angle in any of the TT's and the MMC3's always were perfectly straight and on-tangent.
I did not do any testing with the tracking angle being so far off, not wanting to damage any LP's.
After an hours of testing, making sure I wasn't just doing something wrong, I took photographs and sent The Sound Smith a long email detailing my experience.
Being 2:00 AM on a Sunday morning, I knew I would have to wait until Monday to expect a replay.
So I'm afraid this story is still waiting for a conclusion.
When I receive a good one, the SMMC3 will have a difficult task ahead of it.
Most of the LP's I played in the last week were LP's I've had for 10-40 years, and they've never sounded that rich or detailed.
I'm anxious to see what Sound Smith can do with this moving cross cartridge that costs over $100 more than the MP-150.
In the meantime, I've having hours of pleasure listening to the SL1200+MP150.
Both TT's are works of art.
The TX-2 is a modern, minimalist, precise machine.
The SL is a study in function over form.. overkill on weight, versatility, quality bearings, ease of user adjustments... simple, incredible, precise machine.
Ian, Thanks again for getting me out of my little world of staying with one TT that I really liked, so I could discover what I've been missing.

I definitely be waiting on your next record and gear buying excursions. I have an addicting tendency to upgrade capacitance and resistor components in my old NAD 3130 amp to squeeze out as much performance as I can get, which sings beautifully. But your take on the MP150 will certainly upgrade NAD performance to another level, as the model is famed for its MM/MC phono stage.

    • @HiViNywschannel
      @HiViNywschannel  6 років тому

INdeed!!! Wow i just read about it on the net, yes it is known for its great MM/MC phonostage!! you must be having much fun and happiness playing and listening to such great "vintage" classic, built like a rock, hifi equipment! I owned the NAD AV716 for 20 years before passing it on to a friend last year. I have an affinity for NAD in my heart. The AV716 is the very first hifi amplifier I bought when i started my audio hobby 23 years ago, when I was 20 years of age :-D !!! Very nice av receiver :-D.... heehee. Such nostalgia and great sound quality. Brother, kudos to you modifying and tweaking it to get the very best performance and sonic bliss.. May you have fun and joy always in your audio journey, all the best :-D ! ~ ian

Thank you Ian for your kind words. After having great success in upgrading to audio specific resistors (Kiwame, PR9732, Dales,Takman), I be upgrading the 33 year old (yes. they are that old and decaying) NAD capacitors for Mundorf EVO Silver/Oil, Audio Note Copper, JFX Series , Nichicon KZ and Elna Silmic II's. Then the signal cabling. Followed by catridge cabling from copper to pure silver. Finally buying the MP150.
I think like any audiophile , there's an 'unreasonable' (lol) desire to get to that 'performance' level whilst listening to vinyl. Your system is an 'emotional' one. Even on video it displays subtle nuances and micro touches coming from the background. A clear separation of instrumentation and an emphasis on space, depth - beautiful!
I would love if it were possible, that you do some future reviews on interconnect cables between say phono stage and preamp, as well as speaker cables? And shootouts? I'm sure others may want to know, if its worth spending extra amount over cheap varieties.
Thank you for your enjoyable, classy, enthusiastically laced informative reviews. :-D

I caught this video _years_ ago - and have been comparing this cartridge with many other reviews both MM and MC. I've been going through a very long and ugly divorce, and finally got my turntable and vinyl collection back having last laid eyes on it in 2016! Of course, before the boxes were even unpacked I had ordered the MP-150. I've been living with streaming (my Aurender and hi-rez Tidal really aren't anything to sneeze at) and having not listened to vinyl for so very long was excited to hear what I'd been missing. After listening to my Goldring Eroica, I installed this cartridge. I've enjoyed the Eroica, but this is in another category entirely. Your enthusiasm for this brand is not at all misguided. Out of the box, it curb stomps the pricier UK offering. Lively and dynamic, it has swing! I can't wait for it to have several hours of break-in. It may have taken 5 years, but it was worth the wait. Thank you for your comprehensive comparisons and honest assessments.

My dear friend, Ian. Your descriptive in-depth review was such joy to hear. Highly professional in Approach and terminology accurately describes this wonderful transcriptive device, the Nagaoka MP-150.
The balanced combination of Schiit Mani, G series Turntable, and the fabulous MP-150 made your system (even via UA-cam) sound like a million dollars. As you know, I've been a fan of Nagaoka Carts since the 80's. They have always offered exceptional value with sound quality way above price. They just know how to do it with honesty.
You have a great pair of ears, Ian. You would make a great sound engineer in a studio specialising in Audiophile recordings 👍 you also prove (something I've been trying to tell people for years) you DO NOT need to spend outrageous sums of money to achieve genuine audiophile realism and stunning musicality. Thank you for sharing your passion brother ✅

      .
Oh yes, the Mani is superb and never the bottleneck to these cartridge reviews and upgrades :-D
Hope to hear/see your THREE systems my friend.

    Hello Ian from France.
Thank you very much for your reviews, at first I wanted to upgrade my AT 95 with a AT120. But it truly turns out that it wasn't worth the price so I took a Nagaoka MP 110. Will have it next week and I can't wait to try it.
Unfortunately I bought a Teac tn 300 and by seeing one of your other video I checked the rotation speed and indeed it is not accurate. Tho I'm not an audiophile so I can't hear the variation so I hope that I'll be able to enjoy the Nagaoka and it won't let me notice the speed variation.
In any case thank you again for your brillant and hard work. It was a pleasure to watch your videos.

Thank you Buddy from France!! I am sure you will enjoy it, the MP-110!!! It is my "daily commute" :-D my daily cart i listen to!! Most excellent at its price and up to US$230 and only beyond which it is superceded by the Goldring 1006 and the MP-150. The MP-110 gives beautiful, balanced, high quality sound. Detailed, very clear, great harmonics and detail retrieval, bouncy, great pace, rhythm and timing, great bass lines!! Enjoy my friend! THank you for referring to the other video i have made. Remember: Don't rush. Take your time. Enjoy the journey. Warmest Regards!!! ~ian

Ian, you 'Are' the Arnold Schwarzenegger of audio excitement! Your description of the MP150's sound contains flourishing details that other reviewers neglect to mention. In your comparison video's, your ability to focus on only the performance bounds of the cartridges being judged, makes it much easier for the buying public to make risk free informed choices. I applaud the enormous effort you take to assure the that operational environment is a level playing field. My friend from the UK purchased my NAD TT (re-badged Rega) with a MP150 on board, and his comments uncannily mirrored yours. I've got the next step up MP200 aboard a Thorens TD318. Many thanks for the honest work you do.

On a solemn note, i did sacrifice my own expenses so as to help all of you my dearest friends who love vinyl like me, to make risk-free informed choices. The only way is to go under the radar from all manufacturers and BUY the equipment with cash from retailers without them knowing who i am, and unexpectedly just grabbing one of the boxes in stock in the store, so they have no way to prepare any special "stock" for me. I have a duty to all of you friends, and I told myself for the past 6 years, to commit to all of you, dearest friends enjoying this most precious and beautiful form of music appreciation.
Warmest Regards to you and your family, and to your community, i wish all of you safety, stable livelihoods, and good health,

@@HiViNywschannel Ian, you are a man of integrity. I went way overboard with my vinyl setup ... I built my TT using a 5.2cm thick slab of solid acrylic. The sub-platter is acrylic as well with a hardened drill rod axle pressed into it. A low cogging synchronized Premotec motor drives to 300 rpm with 60Hz. The arm is a Roksan Nima I bought from gentleman in New Zealand with an Ortofon LYS (clear body MC 20) on board. Took 4 weeks and $1100 to build it. The pickup feeds two Triad J0-3 step up transformers, then into an RIAA 6DJ8 stage designed by Arthur Loesch. The PS is 6X4 rectified. So is the 1.7 wpc 6BM8 amplifier I designed and built 19 years ago. Speakers are TQWT with L Cao FA6 full range drivers. Thought you'd like to know you've another true friend. @@HiViNywschannel Hello again Ian ... More fun to convey ... Recently got a True Blue Box Cobalt DA integrated from the Netherlands ( see Hans Beekhuyzen's review ).
Everything is done in the digital domain, including RIAA compensation using Axign technology. My TD-318 & MP200 feed the phono input. All sources are converted to 24/192 and then converted to 500KHz PWM to 2 channel stereo. Digital A2D feedback even compensates for speaker dynamic impedance. Hard to believe this technique works so well.
Made an improved 'Hafler' surround system by designing a transformer based attenuator / mixer that 1) feeds a center channel for TV [L+R], and 2) feeds two difference transformers for surround [L-R & R-L]. The surround signals are sent to an a/d/s PS5 amplifier. The benefit over the Hafler topology is adjustable gain control for the surround with just one potentiometer. There's also a LPF that feeds a powered sub.
BTW your MP150 vs MP200 sound clips were so well recorded that I could tell the difference between the two with just my Samsung Galaxy S9 (no headphones were needed).
Many thanks for your attention regarding my Nerdiness (somehow I don't think you mind). Feel free to PM me so we can exchange photos :).

I've just received my Mani from the USA. It walks all over my current phono stage (Project Tubebox DS), even before being fully run in.
It is clear and detailed yet smooth at the same time. The soundstage is the best I've ever had in my room. Voices sound real, organic and have presence. Bass is just as your review describes it. It outperforms my trusty Audiolab 8000PPA. No shit!
I'm now waiting for my MP150 to arrive. I fully expect it to knock my more expensive cartridge off it's perch!
Many thanks for all of your hard work. It is gratefully received by all of us vinyl nutters.

    Hi Ian!
    Thanks for your great reviews.
I’ve been wanting to try a Nagaoka for a long time and your review of the MP-150 was so exciting that I want to buy one right now!
But I want to ask you something: I currently have a AT150sa - which is quite similar to the 440mla - and I agree with you that they have unbalanced frequency response and are too bright and CD-like. HOWEVER they track great and I have NO inner-groove-distortion with the AT.
SO, my dilemma is: getting a Nagaoka mp150 would be an upgrade in all levels? What do you think of the Grado Red fitted with the 8mz stylus?
    Thanks in advance!

I've read online that you can put an MP-200 stylus on the came cartridge as the MP-150. Have you ever heard of this or tried this upgrade out? I know that the Ortofon cartridge 2M Red and Blue use the same cartridge and are interchangeable, so it didn't seem that far-fetched that the Nagaoka carts might be the same. What's your opinion. Great reviews always! You help me make some difficult decisions. I purchased the Nagaoka MP-110 a while ago based on your previous review and I have never been happier. This was definitely the clear winner in that group. I came here to see if I wanted to upgrade to the MP-150, but I don't think the difference is enough to warrant replacement just yet. Thankfully I listen to my records a lot, so I expect that it won't be long until I need a new needle.

Brother, thank you for coming by and catching up! I do have two MP-110 at home, and a replacement stylus JNP-110 on hand to do duties anytime. I was listening to Jazz, Deutsche Gramaphone orchestra works, and some Chinese pop, via the MP-110 last evening and my goodness... it is such a relief and great enjoyment after finishing the project with the AT VM530EN review. :-D I am very happy to return to the MP-110. SUCH RELIEF AND utter relaxation and enjoyment!! Do take care and I hope getting the JNP-110 will be highly accessible to, and easy for you. Warmest Regards my friend, Vinyl lives on. ~ ian.

Thank you for some excellent your reviews. I'm really curious if you at some point in the future will be able to do a review of the Nagaoka MP-500? Also I find cartridges from Lyra very interesting. I'm looking to get into vinyl again after about 10 years without it. I'm looking at turntables and already I'm very confused. There are so many choices.

Dear Brother, yes, I have already started running in the MP-200 and MP-500 :-D. They have been unboxed and swapping running duties on my technics with other carts under review in the Groups E and F cartridges. Thank you for asking my friend!! Have a lovely Sunday ahead and I AM THRILLED TO HEAR YOU COME BACK TO VINYL after 10 years :-D !!! See you my friend!
What is the rough budget for your turntable-tonearm rig?
      Let me know.

Hi Ian, According to Nagaoka manufacturer you have to replace the stylus every 150-200 hours, do you actually do that? I love nagaoka but its rough replace stylus every 200 hours.

Hello Ian. Thank you for all the work you did for the phono cartridge shootout. I purchased one of these Mp-150's based on this review. I just got it so it probably needs some time to break in but so far I'm impressed. What tracking force do you recommend for the best results? Where did you have it set for this review? Thank you again. Love your channel!

Dear Dennis👋😄, I am happy for you!! I use 1.75 to 1.78g at most.
You are very welcomed Brother, u need to thank you for your encouragement that keeps me going. I only work to help all you vinyl buddies, my friends, and the only thing I can ever wish for is you friends benefiting from these efforts, nothing else I can wish for. Nothing else i am working for, coz of copyright for music included in the videos, there can be no monetization of course🤗! I hope to continue doing pertinent and useful episodes to help out the vinyl community and friends. We will win.

    Hello Ian,
I just thought I'd let you know that in regard to my previous post about possible compliance issues with my Denon Dp45F and the Nagaoka MP150, I contacted Jerry Raskin's Needle Doctor site in Minnapolis Minnesota U.S.A. He informed me that they have had great success using Nagaoka cartridges with similar servo controlled arms. So it sounds like I should be alright. Apparently the Japanese use a different formula for figuring out compliance of a cartridge. It should be where I live in about 3 more weeks. I hadn't received a reply to my previous post so I thought maybe you didn't know how to answer my post. All is good and soon I'll be experiencing the Nagaoka sound Thanks for your time Ian. I do enjoy your videos very Informative. Take Care Cordially Richard

Good morning Ian! Love your videos; not pretentious, joyful, very instructive and well presented. My question is: can this carthridge fit a low mass tonearm? I have been trying to inderstand this thru some reading but can't find a "real" answer. I own a vintage Thorens with the isotrack arm and I am trying to figure out if I can match this tonearm with the MP-150... Best regards

very cool informative review and one of the reasons i got one put on my P6! its early days but it sounds awesome!!! oddly though, when I check the tracking force with my digital gauge from amazon it reads 2.5. is that normal? I had a trustworthy retailer install it with tracking force set to approx 1.8 and antiskate 0.5. ; it was tested and set-up using hifi news test lp.
