    So I took your advice, ditched my imitation Audio Technica LP120 and purchased a 1977 Technics 1301(I love the auto return) and carefully set it up with your guidance using Nagoka MP110H and the Schiit Mani Phono stage pre-amp. After taking the time to use a technics approved alignment protractor the extra effort was worth every penny. Total cost is under $500 and my system sounds amazing. Truly my ear is NOT as refined as yours and may never be but the difference is astounding and I seriously appreciate the effort and dedication you go to in informing people how to get amazing sound without going broke.

      YES!! Got a 1301 a few months back, love it. The start didn't work when I got it, but that was easily fixed. I am am currently using a Shure 97xe cart but want to upgrade to the Nagaoka MP-110. Wondering if you have tried other carts aside from the 110, and if so is the sounds difference that noticeable.

    This is the only UA-cam channel I am subscribing to! You've totally won me over with your unvarnished reviews and fun videos. Thanks for discussing the points that matter and helping me see my choices more clearly. I'm convinced your guidance has pointed me down a good path that will help me enjoy my vinyl even more. My MP-110 arrives in a few days...can't wait to hear it!

    I really appreciate your videos and feel that they are of great benefit to anybody interested in vinyl replay, be they experienced users of turntables or newcomers to this most enjoyable form of music reproduction. However, I must admit that watching your videos has ended up costing me a fair bit of money, as I have bought a few of the cartridges that you have recommended. Not only have I bought them, but I have also held on to them and continue to use them in rotation, as each of them has attributes that I enjoy. Thanks to you I have a Goldring Elektra and a Nagaoka MP110 and a Nagaoka MP200. I totally agree with all of your conclusions about these cartridges, which give me a tremendous amount of enjoyment. So a big thank you for that, as I consider it money very well spent. I had to spend a lot of time getting the MP200 correctly aligned but the end result was worth it. If I could only keep one of my phono cartridges, it would be the MP200. It is, as I think you said "affordable luxury". If it was the only cartridge I could keep, then I would use its standard stylus for playing my best condition vinyl and use an MP110 stylus on it for playing my less pristine records. I would also probably consider fitting an MP100 conical stylus on it, for playing my few mono records. In terms of the most bang for the least bucks, I feel that the Goldring Elan is a very hard cartridge to beat. It may not be 100% musically accurate, with its slightly rolled off higher frequencies, but it is a very enjoyable cartridge to listen to. Although discontinued, it is still available to buy in the UK for as little as £40. I doubt that it will remain available for very much longer. Although it is a very enjoyable listen in its standard form, it can as you know be upgraded by fitting a Goldring Elektra elliptic stylus to it, for a further £85. Or you can fit an aftermarket copy of the Elektra elliptic stylus to it for as little as £30. I have tried this and the results were very satisfying. I think that your review of the Goldring Elan was one of the most enjoyable and infectious cartridge review videos I have ever seen and heard. So please keep providing these videos, if you can. I think you have provided a great service to the world wide vinyl community.

      Dear Douglas!!! Thank you for your time and kindess for me.
      I love all that you have WRITTEN in detail!!! and i agree with them all!!! Yup... get the remaining stocks of the Elan replacement styluses!!!especially if you reside in the U.K.!!!coz Goldring prices are best in the U.K. and very deliciously so!!!! Still listening AS usual...to my mp-110 and mp150 and 200, plus that 1006 and 1042 from Goldring!!! Glad all of these monster performance cartridges are around on earth to help us enjoy lovely vinyl analogue sound and music!!!
      Thank you for your extreme kindness for me my friend... i feel very touched and encouraged to come back asap.... lately past few months clinical work hasn't been kind to me, and also that many people have not been able to keep their jobs and livelihood, and even their loved ones, empathy has it that discussion of whether a cartridge or phonostage sounds better in certain sound parameters, would be out of place in many people's situations in this time. I have earmarked since Dec last year, and procured some products for review. And i hope to come back soon and appear and see you guys again!
      I am always around to chat with you dearest friends in the comments columns!!!! :-D
      May you and your family be well and happy, safe and healthy always,

    Yaaayyyy! You put that vid up within a 1/2 hr of talking to you! Lol. Now, that’s dedication.
    Firstly, Moko looks absolutely adorable running around on the beach, and I love the tiny little bark! Haha! Looks like quite a relaxing vacation with the family too. I could hear an REM tune from one of my favorite LP’s, “Document” very faintly in the background at one point.
    Anyway, that was a great comparison video, Ian. I’m not surprised the MP-110 still remains at the top of the heap in its price range and even beyond that. It’s truly a magical cartridge. That and the Goldring 1006, which I purchased both of after seeing your videos, btw. I sincerely thank you for that! 🙂 👍 They are my 2 main cartridges, even outperforming much pricier carts. I think that maybe the E1 with the conical stylus could quite possibly beat out its 2 big brothers, the E2 and E3? I could be totally wrong too. Not to say the E2 or E3 sounded bad, but they are no MP-110 by any means.
    On a quick and separate note, a buddy of mine has gone through a ton of carts and finally went with an MP-300. He said he no longer has any bit of “upgraditis”! 😂
    Thank you very kindly for another wonderful video, Ian! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
    Your friend,
    - Nick

      I must have taken up a lot of your time Brother....

      Funny, I thought the same thing about the E3 and the MP-110 and also recognised REM and loved going back! So funny that!! But it’s the extra atmosphere that really no other channel has to my opinion... Oh, and now I want to try the MP-300...

      Yeah, I don’t think you can really go wrong with any Nagaoka cart, but if it cured my friend’s upgraditis, it must be great!

    Thank you so much for your passionate dedication. I find extremely exact all your descriptions, except one: the high frequencies, which are Very attenuate at Nagaoka MP-110 comparing to Goldring E3 and not only with this cartridge. I don't know why this Nagaoka defiency is not at all heard on your video, but in real life-sound the low high freq are crystal clear :)
    Nota bene: the same thing with Technics SL-1210G, and AT-LPW40WN.

    Hi and thanks again for another great review Ian, FYI, I had to change the Nogaoka Headshell that came with the cart due to having only one locking pin on top, the VTA (SRA) changes depending on how tight the locking nut is tightened, it pulls the headshell up altering the angle to the point where the tonearm could not be raised any further to compensate, replaced with the Jelco HS-25 (Duel pin) to get consistency and Headshell parallel to the arm to achieve correct VTA. Thought this was worth a mention.
    Thanks again mate, you have made my system sound awesome with such a small investment.

    • @Livewire91
      @Livewire91 5 років тому

      I also ordered the MP-110H a while ago and the headshell was much higher than my stock Technics headshell. I even put on a thicker mat, but the tonearm was still not parallel with record surface. Adding a second mat helped, but it looked stupid. So i put the cart on my Technics headshell and left the thick platter mat on the platter and now it's parallel. Mind that the tonear.m base was already at 0.

    Wow, on this review I could hear the differences your described on nearly all examples. The MP110 just seems like the absolute and clear winner.
    Thank you again for bringing us these comparisons Ian, currently in the process of retipping my J-NP200 into a finer stylus profile, further enhancing the carts precision and tracking, hope it works out!

      Dear Buddy Leon :-D!!! Hi!!!! Sorry I took 2 hours to reply to you. Brother, thank you for catching up so soon again!! I am very glad you came by! Thank you for helping so many friends on the MP100-110/150-200/300-500 body-stylus information all around the UA-cam channels!! I saw them!! Very helpful of you!
      Amazing!! You are RETIPPING your MP200 with a finer stylus?! Goodness i can hardly wait to hear your update!!
      Brother, I have just checked and there are two units of SL1200Mk5 currently on sale on hifido website :-D
      Here they are:
      www.hifido.co.jp/?M=&LNG=J&G=0301&KW=technics+sl+1200
      I think it is because of the upcoming release of the Mk7, that the Mk5s now whenever available at hifido, are listed at 29,800yen (before minussing of the 8% Japanese sales tax) instead of previously always at 46,800yen!!! Good buys indeed!
      I have a hunch that the Mk5s are going to outperform the MK7, if not equal the MK7. We shall see soon in a few months. Mk5 made very well in the past in Japan.
      Warmest Regards,
      ~ ian.

      Is it better to go with an entirely new old stock unit or are these used Mk5s still as okay in worse condition for maybe half the price?

They are pretty anal and staunch at doing these checks and maintenance before releasing them for sale :-D . ...hahaha... so... either your friend's offer or these used units from hifido WILL be great buys! Thank you so much for these cartridge comparison videos. Due to the vast variety and cost, it is an imposing task to select one if on a limited budget such as I am. I am willing to pay for good sound quality but I cant afford the hit or miss that usually goes with it. This video series has been extremely valuable in selecting a phono cartridge. The sound quality is great and it is very clear and easy to hear and understand the differences you explain through both my head phones and speakers. Based on your videos and my budget, I have decided on at minimum the Nagaoka MP-110 but probably save a bit more and step up to the MP-150 or possibly the MP-200 for the better boron cantilever.. Thank you again for the help.

      Oh, and it would be interesting to compare the Nagaoka with the best pick from the next group of cartridges to see how it holds up. I am always confused by ‘for the price’ reviews. Difficult to compare it to more expensive cartridges. How much are they better. Same goes for the Schiit Mani, which I bought based on your recommendation, and love, but how does it compare to more expensive models, how far up the ranks do I need to go to improve the sound of either cartridge or RIAA? Would be interesting with a review of best pick from each group and how the cheaper ones hold up to the more expensive ones. What do we get my spending more money? Just an idea :-)

      Dear Buddy Peter :-D the Nagoaka MP-110 leads GroupB ($90-$130) and GroupC ($170-$200) carts, and only trails to Goldring 1006 and Nagaoka MP-150 in the GroupD price range. You can watch my Goldring 1006 and MP150 reviews on my channel homepage :-D . As for the Schiit Mani, at $129, it even beats the $1,100 Lehmann Audio Black Cube SE2 in MM mode. Thank you Ian (and fellow Nagaoka-enthusiast!), for this interesting comparison. It's no surprise though that the Nagaoka with its much more sophisticated construction principle and materials wins!Unfortunatly due to a continuous (and recently very sharp) price advance for Nagaoka cartridges in Europe, it is good to see possible alternatives. For example a Nagaoka MP-150 is now at about 330 €, whereas its direct competitor, the Ortofon 2M Blue is available for 190 €, which would make the decision quite clear despite my Nagaoka preference.
    What I would really like to see is how the E1, E2 and E3 compare to each other, for example if and how the different cantilevers of the two spherical cartridges influence the sound (I always felt the "carbon" cantilevers add some nasality to the sound).
    The Goldring E-series sells at really low rates in Europe, on Ebay you can get the E1 for as little as 50 €, the E2 for 65 € and the E3 for about 90 € (all plus shipping). Wouldn't that be a good subject for a short shoot-out video?
    Oh, and then maybe throw in a MP-100 into that Goldring pool, and see how it performs. You could just get the JN-P 100 stylus for your MP-100, as they are otherwise identical ;-)
    Thanks again, and a big thumbs up for your always very elaborate reviews (and setups!).

    • @HiViNywschannel

      Dear Kai :-D you have given me those NOS carts websites and I am amazed! Thank you!!! Brother, i have just received some emails/messages on this UA-cam board from fellow U.K. and Europe countries, that they buy direct from Japanese ebay sellers from about GBP90 (MP110) and about Euro100-110 , and MP150 for Euro260 :-D... The MP110 beats the 2M Blue in performance too, thus, :-D it is still easy to go with the Nagaoka carts. So far so good. Let's hope one day other carts from other companies run close or even knock these pesky 110, 150, 200 off their perches. I am hoping :-D !!!

    • @KaiTimmerherm
      @KaiTimmerherm 5 років тому +1

      Well, maybe the UK customs is more lenient, but in Germany import duties and VAT are adding a considerable amount to the selling price, so I could also directly buy from german sellers (which also speeds up the shipping duration).
      But back on topic, how would you compare the Goldring E1 and E2 to each other, is the E2 worth the extra €€€? Or is the sound difference minimal?
      PS: the Schiit Mani is practically unavailable in Europe these days.

    Another excellent video. You have a brilliant way of describing sound which makes sense, and your passion and enthusiasm is awesome!
    I know you used a Dynavector in the past, could you help with some advice? I have an elderly Dynavector 10X4, yes, 4 😔. In an Inspire Apollo TT which has a 'tweeked' Rega RB arm. I like the smooth mids of the 10X4, but find the sound overall a bit 'thin' and lacking bass drive and depth. Would the Nagaoka MP110 be an improvement on a 10X5? Is there a better option for the Rega type arms? Listening is mainly 80's pop and 70's AOR - Eagles, Alan Parsons Project, but also classical, jazz, lounge, so the cart needs to be an 'all rounder'. Any tips much appreciated.

      👋😄great hi to you!!!!
      Ooooooh an "elderly 10x4"!!! Almost the same age as me (I am born in 1975)! But if it is good it is good. And some older friends have told me and attested to many vintage cartridges having stood the test of time very well.
      It may be easy for me to jump to conclusions without having heard the 10x4. But I would earnestly opine that, the "fault" which you have noticed on the 2.5mV 10x4, may be due to the phonostage. So perhaps you may try a better phonostage even😄... I may be wrong. Brother, thank you.

      HiViNyws channel - thanks for replying, I forgot to mention phono stage, very good and important point. I use different phono stages, an Icon Audio PS 1.2 valve phono stage, but I find the phono stages in my pre amps are better - Musical Fidelity 308, and Musical Fidelity E200 with option phono stage. I get better bass dynamics from my Project TT with a Denon DL110, but the Denon can be a bit bright and 'synthetic', and lacks the detail and resolution of the Dynavector 10X4 (2002, but low miles).

    Do you have any plans on reviewing the Denon DL 103 cartridge? Since it's highly praised all over the internet and rather affordable I'd love to see how it fares against the rest of the lot.

    • @1mctous
      @1mctous 5 років тому +2

      Because of its low compliance and relatively high mass, many modern tonearms will not be compatible with the DL-103's. If you have a good MC preamp and suitable tonearm then the Denon serves an old-school, midrange-forward niche.

    • @XerxesAudio
      @XerxesAudio 5 років тому +1

      @@1mctous I concur. What you heard about the DL-103 is true. When matched with your system properly, it beats cartridges 2 to 3 times its price. Some people wonder that if a Rega arm would work well; they would be surprised that it does.

    • @1mctous
      @1mctous 5 років тому +2

      @@XerxesAudio Many analog fans look down upon conical styli such as the DL-103's 0.6 mil. They will literally round off the high treble which is often desirable, but they can still track everything below quite well. The DL-103's robust midrange may not suit all tastes but would certainly sound great on the radio, and indeed many Japanese stations used them with a step-up transformer in the 1960's and 70's.

      @@hothousebebop6627 It should. The Dual 1219 manual says the arm can balance cartridges up to 12 g. Of course you will need either a MC (high-gain) phono preamp or a step-up transformer for your DL-103. You will also need to lubricate the drive system beneath the platter and possibly replace the idler wheel if the rubber has hardened.

    Hello. I was glad to run across your video for reviews on the Goldring E3 and the MP-110. I recently purchased a Fluance RT85, which comes stock with an Ortifon 2M Blue. I’m happy with the RT85 and it seems to be a good match for my Rega Fono MM, but I’ve never been a big fan of the Ortifon 2M line, Red or Blue. The sound seems too bright and harsh to my ears. I completely agree that both the E3 and MP-110 both sound better than the 2M Blue but they don’t seem to be a significant upgrade to my particular setup. Do you have any other new cartridge suggestions in the $300-$400 range? Thanks in advance - I really enjoy your videos and how you share your passion for analog music.

    I have to admit, if I had known the 110 was available in the UK for less than £90 posted I may have gone for it over the E3. Having said that, I have been very happy with the E3 as an upgrade over my previous Ortofon concord cartridge. Coupled with an Edwards Audio apprentice phono stage it gives a rich, wide sound even through modest bookshelf speakers. Hopefully you would agree, Ian, that although the 110 bests it overall, the E3 has given it the closest run of the budget cartridges pitted against it so far. To my ears that is the case anyway!

    Always a pleasure to see another new video from you Ian - especially one reinforcing just how good the MP-110 is!
    Would you believe, I do have something that I like even more - the Technics EPC-P202C (T4P) with Jico SAS stylus. This combination with a Technics SL-10 brings out a whole new level of sound with superior productions and pressings (although there is not much difference using records with productions or pressings that are anything below the highest quality) - mind you, the sylus alone is a bit more expensive than the MP-110. I'll be making some comparisons with the Technics EPC-205-II series of cartridges with Jico SAS soon. I'll also get a Technics T4P adaptor so I can compare all of them in my SL-1200MK3D. If you have any old/out of production cartridges that you like and Jico make a replacement SAS stylus, I would highly recommend trying one! Until the next video, cheers!

    I wanted an upgrade from an Ortofon OM10 cartridge and 2M Red (the obvious first choice) sounded somehow bright for me. And I was going to buy the Goldring E3 purely based on press reviews - nowhere to hear it. Then I watched your review and it turned me around, so I bought the Nagaoka MP-110 cartridge - also a "blind date". And I was delighted from the start, even before putting 10 hours on it. Sounds great. GREAT! Then one of the sellers knowing I am looking for a cartridge informed me that he has an E3 in the listening room, and he was also kind enough to let me compare it to my new MP-110, on my table - Elipson Chroma 400 RIAA. It was good, but not better than the MP-110. And since I was already there with the toys, I also tried the 2M Blue, which sounded maybe a bit sharper sometimes, but also too bright and, for my ears, colder and not so complete and entertaining as the Nagaoka. And an Audio-Technica VM 530 EN (I think), although cheaper than the Blue, but sounding better to me - not enough to make me change my mind about the Nagaoka.
    I am not an expert, just an avid music listener, always paying attention to details... and for me, WITHOUT ANY DOUBT, The Nagaoka MP-110 is the best out of this group. If I have to put them in order: MP-110, then a tie between the E3 (cheaper) and the VM 530, then the 2M Blue and the 2M Red (price factor included). My 2 cents - nothing more :)
    Ian, thank you for your wonderful review. It proved an ear-opener for me since I did not even take the Nagaoka into consideration before watching it. Now I am very very happy with my upgrade.

    Ian, another great review and as many of us expected, the Nag was clearly better. Just before this video, I had a comparison of the old AT95e and the new VM95e and the Nag 110, both AT carts were dull, flat and uninteresting, the 110 outclassed both, no contest.
    Here with the new Goldrings, it was closer a comparison, due to all three being closer in price but the differences were still quite noticeable.

      Warmest Regards my friend!!! And have a great vinyl'ing time ahead with your family and friends :-D!

    Ian, my friend!! I'm now a fan of your videos...I think that your work is amazing, and a healthy refresh for the Audio community.
    What's your opinion about Audio Technica Mc Cartridges? Vs. Hana SL for example...? I' m using right now an AT 33SA... 🤔
    (By the way, I've purchased a Schiit Mani after viewing your reviews about it...😁😎👍)

      Dear Buddy Claudio :-D ...hi!!! I am humbled by your words of kindness. Thank you for your time!
      Brother, I do like the AT-33EV and AT-33ptgii, as i have heard them at friends' homes sounding great. I would love to do a Goldring Eroica LX vs Hana SL vs an AT MC cart at the same ~$800 price range too... it is in my dreams :-D brother!!!!
      Brother, i congratulate you for getting the Mani :-D!!! but, a small but, is that do not expect superlatives from its MC mode. It is not a wimp, and as my critical MC friend say: "...hmm...it is not bad, but it is really NO SLOUCH either!"
      It performs crazy good in MM mode.
      Brother, care to tell me anything more about your MC carts journey?
      Eager to hear from you my dear friend, thank you~
      Warmest Regards and have a lovely week ahead :-D

      @@HiViNywschannel Ian, thanks for your comments 👍😁. My experiences with Mc Cartridges are limited to the At 33 PTG II and recently to the AT 33 SA, using a Parks Audio Budgie Step Up Transformer + a customized single ended Fet Class A Phono Preamp. I would say that the differences between these carts are mostly in tonality, regarding their differences in the stylus shape, and in the music presentation. The At 33 PTG II seems to be more analytical, with the mids a little bit restrained. In the opposite, the SA model has more articulated and present mids, and a more pleasent and credible presentation, for my taste...
      I'm aware of the limitations of the Maní regarding Mc Cartridges, but my plan Is to use it with de Budgie SUT, so think the to are going to form a good society...!!!
      I send you a big greeting from me and from the community of Argentinian audiophiles...🇦🇷!!!

      Dearest Brother Andrea.... hope Trigonōs is well too!... thank you for your well wishes and kindest support always. The three phonostages are the MoFi StudioPhono, the Tisbury Audio Domino, and the Vincent PHO-8. They are about US$250-300. They have already arrived in my home and I have started running them in for the past week :-D . See you soon Brother, i am very glad to hear from you.

      Unfortunately, my friend, Trigonōs had no opportunity to survive and that’s why you haven’t for so long time heard about it. I am really sorry, you can trust me. Italy it’s a difficult place for music with no or little compromise. Have a good job with your trhee phono preamps and keep on enjoying great music. Thank you very much indeed for your generous answer.

    Nice video friend.....as always...my old Nagaoka MP11 has been broken and I bought the "new" Nagaoka MP110....I can say that I felt that the MP110 little bit more refined and with more clear trebles...so, I can conclude that Yes...Nagaoka has improved the new line ( even if not that much ) compared to the last ones. Just a little joke : considering the number of cartridges you have already bought, you can open a "seconded hand cartridges shop "...kkkkk

      @@HiViNywschannel Hi friend...Thank you once more for your words...no update on my system....., actually I had the chance of listening to some amplifiers ( tubes ) and speaker ( big horns ) produced on 50's and I was REALLY SHOCKED !!!!....I think we have not made a big improvement on High End (probably the opposite ) during the last 70 years :(
