Hi Dixie! New to solo hiking in 2018 (thanks to your inspiration) I took a while researching backpacks and chanced upon Atom Packs. The idea of a customised fitted pack appealed as I knew I’d need all the help I could get (I was 62 then). But it was also the story of the company and its owner, Tom Gale, that made me feel this was a business I wanted to support. Living in the UK meant I could visit Tom and his team in Keswick to take a look and for measurements to be made. The result was perfect and I used it on my first solo hike along Offa’s Dyke - 188 miles of utter joy when I hardly knew I was carrying the pack. Unlike you, my colour scheme is slightly whacky to say the least - wanted to be seen - I fall over, a lot! My dream of the PCT hasn’t happened yet, but the Pennine Way during lockdown was a challenge. I urge anyone looking for a new pack to consider Atom Packs. Mine was worth every penny.
I have an atom 35 and an atom + 50 both custom and love them both. You should have asked about bottom loops before ordering. Also a note on atom packs they will repair your packs if you damage one, I recently had a shoulder strap replaced on my atom as the pocket got a tear in it but no idea how but I had been hiking in forests a lot. This was the most anticipated of your videos as I’ve messaged you about atom packs previously great to see what your opinion was on it 👍
I bought an Atom + 50 litre pack (standard design) earlier this year & have used it on Wainwright's Coast to Coast (UK) & other shorter trips totalling about 250 miles. I'm happy with the pack & it's of durable construction (certainly more durable than my Gossamer Gear g4-20, which I've had for 18 months & is already showing signs of wear). I've had 2 minor issues- I found it fiddly to detach/attach the hip belt pockets, & the plastic fitting one of the side pocket draw cords failed. I live close to their new premises outside Keswick & went in to get the repair done- a friendly & efficient process, which only took a few minutes using an improved fitting. I got the chance to see the people that actually made the gear, which is the opposite of a sweat shop, with views towards Skiddaw mountain. I too like to keep my tent on the outside of the pack & I put mine in one of the side pockets, held in place by the top bungi cord (I have a Tarpent Notch Li- light but relatively bulky).
I have the off the shelf Mo EP50. Such a great pack. So comfortable, well padded. Easy to reach a smart water bottle from the side pockets. Also these side pockets have drainage holes sewn. A 700ml smart water bottle will fit the shoulder pockets but I find with a sports cap on top they sit a bit high for me and get a bit in my face when turning sideways so I just use smaller bottles there which works fine. Bottom pocket is good for snacks and gloves/beanie but obviously not when the ground is wet!! I turned the pack inside out and removed the back panel to seam seal it. Also as the back panel comes out so easily and quickly it’s great for when you are carrying lighter loads when day hiking or base camp hiking. I have the Dynema front pocket which I personally think looks more aesthetically pleasing and is more durable. Trade off is the capacity of the dynema pocket vs mesh is that it has a smaller capacity. The bungee system on the outside is good and accommodates my 1/8“ pad and sandals. Got the add on hip belt pockets which work well but could maybe be a tiny bit bigger, less chance of rain getting into them though with the zip on the side and not top. Stitching of the pack is top notch. Had several emails with the owner Tom who was great to deal with. Overall a great all round pack for the average Thru hiker and great company to deal with.
The hip belt and sizing on most LW or UL packs now can be hard to fit. Even if you follow most manufacturers specs online, it can be confusing and you may have to experiment with the size. With detachable belts, this is now easier since you won’t have to change the main pack to experiment and dial in your belt. Also, this is a place where they have been whittling down the amount and length of the padding to save weight. However, one draw back to shorter padding section is that if you are someone who wears the hip belt around your iliac crest, then the padding won’t fully wrap to the front of your hip bones. This will mean less load transfer and less comfort. Another major drawback is that if you put a hip belt pocket on, which rides on the padding section of the belt, then the pocket will sit further back on your side instead of on the front of your hip bones. This makes it much harder to get in and out of the pocket, especially one-handed because you’ll be reaching down and back instead of just down, it will also likely interfere with the main pack shoulder strap attachment point and it may also be harder to uses the pack’s bottom, side water bottle holders. So if you’re someone who wears your hip belt lower or actually around your pelvic girdle and want to easily access your pockets while hiking, I suggest choosing a hip belt with a longer padded section. It may weight a little more, but your pack will be more comfortable, carry loads more efficiently and will be far more functional. As long as the length of the strap section allows you to cinch the pack as you gain or lose weight, then you’ll be fine. Other than a long thru hike, your measurement around your hips doesn’t fluctuate as much as it does around your higher, natural waist.
Anyone in the UK or travelling to the Lake District at any time can go into the shop to try on the packs to see which pack size/ hip belt size etc fits best for them which was a nice touch I used. Not going to help those who can't make it across but really helped me decide on sizing.
I have a custom Mo 60L and love it! Longest hike so far was 60+ miles at Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico and it carried all of my individual and crew gear beautifully!
I used the Mo for thrus of PCT and AZT and loved it. Taking it on TA in November and sorry you not coming for now. I find hip belt pockets too fiddly and use the Roo fanny pack by Atom which is so handy
I have the Mo 60 as well and one of the customizations I ordered was a slightly deeper left hand side pocket and I use that to keep my x-mid in. Way more secure than strapping to the bottom and easy access. Highly recommend that mod. Loving the pack by the way.
I used Mo pack on Pieterpad (trail from North to South of Netherlands) earlier this year and although a newbie, I was really comfortable and loving the pack. Yes, its very pricey but for me it was worth it. The bottom pocket is amazing and there is little hole on the other side of the main opening which is meant for small garbage such as snack wrappings. Genius!
I went for the standard Mo 50 [xl torso, XL waist] as a conventional hiker I intentionally chose a smaller size than I would have initially, and this as intended has driven me to select gear that will fit. Also I sometimes use a side pocket for tent and sleeping mat, which both fit. A characteristic I found odd is that when full and heavy it fits better than when I have eaten all my food, which is definitely not a problem.
I'm planning to get an Atom pack. I'm lucky enough to live about half an hour away from the factory. I called them up and they said I could visit for a fitting if I wanted to. The lady I spoke to was super friendly, they sound like a good company. Once I have my other gear dialed in I'm going to take them up on the offer and book a fitting appointment.
I got the Custom Mo 50 and used it on the Trilho do Pescadores in Portugal and absolutely loved it. Super comfortable, especially the hip belt that allows perfect weight transfer and the bottom pocket is just fabulous. Also, there is a small hole on the left side of the bottom pocket that serves as a little garbage disposal area - grab a snack from the right, eat it on the go and dispose of the wrapper in the same pocket on the other side, genius!
Atom packs may well be a good alternative to the many American brands for people in the UK, as shipping and import duty on imports from the US often make them not a viable option.
That pack liner is also smell containing. Like an Opsak. Also, $380 isn't really that expensive for a custom pack. Think of it like custom clothing. You're basically designing how the pack will look, what it's made of, what accessories you're adding/subtracting, etc. So really, paying that much for a mass made pack vs. a custom pack, and I"m going custom every time.
I have a Mo 40 that I really like and that I use whenever I go multi-day hiking. As you Dixie, I miss the bottom loops for the tents but that can be resolved easily with cords. As for the PeakDesign Capture, using the other set of crews (the ones requiring the Allen key) makes it far easier.
I love my Mo 60. One of the best things that I customized were 2 Avocado pockets, i.e. one additional stretch mesh pocket on each side above the pockets for the water bottles. They are perfect for storing small items with immediate access or even avocados or tomatoes without smashing them.
Hey! How did you go about getting one avocado pocket on each side? Was it available in the custom options when ordering your pack? I sent them an email about it but got the response that they only offer one avocado pocket.
I bought the Mo50 this past Spring, and so far, I love it. I bought the "stock" option, so I didn't get quite as much customaizability with it, but I also got it significantly less than a fully custom rig. And the setup I got has been very good for me. I've only put about 60 miles or so on mine, so it's still newish to me but it was a major upgrade from my 4 pound Gregory pack qnd my 7 pound NorthFace pack. I didn't get the hip belt pockets, so I picked up a good sized fanny pack, and that's worked quite well for $7, rather than the cost of the hip belt pockets. As far as the Capture Clip, I didn't like the way the camera felt when clipped to the shoulder strap, so I use the capture clip along with the capture pad, and string the pad onto the sternum strap. Was somewhat annoying when I wanted to take the pack off. But as far as walking with it, the sternum strap placement was quite comfy. And that bottom pocket is awesome! I thought I would use it for garbage, but I found it to be a perfect stash for my paper maps, which I laminate before hitting the trail (I know, who still uses paper maps, but I do...). In the shoulder pockets. I store a 700ml bottle on one side and my phone and battery brick on the other side. The setup has worked really well for me.
Can't live without paper maps. You can't really get a feel for the wider environment on a phone map, you need to be able to open it up and see the big picture. Also, they don't need batteries!
@@ewik939 I've carried as much as 4 days. I always Dehydrate food at home and pack in freezer ziplocs, rather than buying the prepared pouches. I find those commercial meals are good but the packaging seems bulky and stiff. I did have to use a bear canister once with it. I strapped it to the top of the mo50 with the Y strap, and it was fine.
I just finished hiking the PCT with an Atom Mo 50. I have a lot of experience hiking and I can say that this has been my absolutely favourite pack, so comfy and well built. I never had any issues or pain, even with the extra weight in the Sierras. I actually bought this week another pack from them 🙊
Once again I would like to thank you for your informative videos. I got really lucky with my backpack. I purchased a 65L pack from Walmart and it is a very comfortable one, it only cost $65. I have been able to load up 40 lbs without losing comfort. Though I usually keep it at around 30 lbs. I wrote awhile back about going through open heart surgery and with your encouragement I was slowly able to regain most of my strength. Thank you for that. I never expected a Walmart pack to fit so well. Keep walking Dixie and enjoy your path.

Great review and great pack. I have the atom+ which is slightly lighter. I would recommend anyone buying from atom packs to contact them with any customisable features they want. You could have asked for the loops etc. I asked for larger/longer side pockets on one side and my tent goes in there. I swapped out my hip pocket clips with z clips. And then finally swapped out the hip pockets with some larger ones also made in the UK 🇬🇧 by wild sky gear. Happy hiking 👍🏻
Pricey. But when you factor in its customisabilty and then look at the price per mile. Not so much. Will certainly be putting this pack as one of my choices for the multi day tramps I’m hoping to do here in NZ.
I have a Mo60 and am in two minds about it. My Exos 58 seemed to swallow my kit much easier. I find the two side pockets too shallow for 1 litre water bottles and the absence of a brain pocket is something I’m still coming to terms with. I agree that the bottom pocket which is stretchy helps makes up for the lack of brain pocket. The pack is well built and certainly tough - I’ve covered close to 200 miles (only got mine a few weeks ago) on trails plus a couple of mountain climbs and the only leaks I’ve experienced have been in the hip pockets. I also use a nylofume pack liner.
I hear you,about the pouch attachments. Would love them sticthed on, or shoulder strap style pockets on the hip belt that go under the detachable pouches. Love my atom +50
I have just ordered my third Atom Pack. Build quality is second to none and the customisable options will always push up production costs, hence the price. I agree though, bottom loops would be good!
If you are getting a customised one, and haven't already had the "in production" message, you should consider dropping them an email to see if they can add bottom loops for you. Their customer support is brilliant, and I have found them very helpful, and accommodating. ☺

I carry my shelter on the top via a Y strap, but I never get in my pack during the day. I carry everything I would need for the day in the outside pockets.

I agree with your assessment. I have an Atom + and a Light AF. The bottom pockets are amazing. My Atom Pack just isn’t quite as comfortable as my ULA or Outdoor Vitals Packs for total loads that go between 18-22 lbs. for smaller loads, I love my Pa’lante and my Nashville Cutaway, but they are best for total loads under 15lbs.
I don't know if this will make it to you Dixie, but I thought you might like to know. I was looking quickly for your channel and typed wander lust and the channel Money Matters came up and it was an entire video of your personal life. You may not care . Dixie instead of the bottom loops have you tried using all that bungee across the big pocket to have your tent on the outside? I was doing it all the time on the PCT and it worked just as well for me. I have an older version of the same pack with about 3000 miles on it and nothing have failed except the attachments for the belt pockets, which I replaced with tiny carabiners. Really good gear I think!
I have the Mo 50 custom and love it, yes I agree about the loops but that's my fault for not asking. I don't think I would buy any other pack now. As for the pack liner, like you I was sceptical but that thing is strong and robust. Ref the hip belt I think it is a huge plus that you can change the belt easily if you need a smaller or larger one.
I had an Atom+ and a Mo from Atom packs back when they were still using Xpac. They’re really well built and the custom options are pretty awesome, but for me the shoulder straps were incredibly uncomfortable. Even with an 8 pound base weight and minimal food I ended up really sore after every trip. I ended up selling both. Maybe the straps are different now. I really wanted to love them, but they just didn’t work for me.
I dont understand why Peak Design is sleeping on making a bigger version...not just slightly wider but also one that can accomodate thicker straps...but then again sleeping pad manufacturers were slow to the demand of wider 25 inch pads without having to resort to long version. I guess unless these guys get out there and hike, not just design stuff in front of their Apple, that's what the customers are going to have to deal with
What I like about these packs is they are made in the US. Unlike so many other packs. I have gone done the UL rabbit hole and to me they are a bit heavy. I understand people who are carrying a lot of camera equipment a beefier pack may be needed. I try to keep my base weight very lite so I will stay with Zpacks. Zpacks also has a similar issue with their belt pockets. It’s an easy fix.
I really like custom sizing I always had problems with standard S M L sizing I went with a liteAF because my torso measurement was right in the middle of their sizing and it came in coyote brown so it matches my dog I was a little worried I got the sizing wrong at 1st but once it came and I got to try it out it's been amazing I have a longer torso and a smaller waist having the right fit made carrying over 30lbs feel more comfortable than my standard medium day hiking bag with a half full water bladder and when I get to the low mid 20s I barely need trekking poles having a good fit makes such a big difference
I also have an EP60 and somehow it doesn't seem right in terms of capacity. My Osprey 48 fitted my kit better. How does that get explained? I do like the mesh pocket on the front as it works well for drying items. I also love the waist belt pockets that are actually useable. The shoulder pockets of the Mo work well for me and to date it has not leaked despite exposure to torrential 14 hour rain. My Osprey Exos would wet out and leak in such conditions. I also use a nylofume bag liner. In terms of comfort my Osprey won hands down. Im in two minds about reverting to an Exos 48 but after having invested so much money in the Mo I am reluctant to lose financially but find myself hankering after the Exos.
Can really tell that you are happy! So glad! The color is aqua and darker is turquoise, mosquito magnets! To differentiate your pack, have a very little stuffed totem animal of choice hanging from a ‘beener’ on the pack for “good luck”Or your bright pink scrunchie!🎃It’s like buying a pack of pink tools at the hardware store! No man-type-man will dare take them! You don’t have to worry about them “taking a walk” or being liberated by the proletariat!’LOL!
Have You noticed that hyperlite mountain gear recently introduced a dcf tent basically identical to the zpacks duplex but with zippered vestibules?. Just what You need another $700 tent!
Anyone heard how the Osprey Atmos fares? I’m within a couple weeks of buying one because “it feels good”. Getting a 60 Ltr for doing my first big hike/AT starting 2022 February.
Have the Atom + and have changed out my belt and for me it has brought the hip pockets closer to the front of my body which helps. But i agree they are horrible to get on and off. New clip please Tom @atompacks
I had the lite af curve on my pct hike and if you're male it's fine, if female I would go for something with a decent hip belt. The small hip belt on the lite af ripped from the pack at the half way point on the PCT. I was hiking with an anatomy professor and we mused a lot about packs for men and women. The company that could send a new pack to me quickest and have a wrap around hip belt and still be ultralight was Gossamer Gear. I bought the G4 20 that is around 40 liters. I don't carry camera gear but they do have a full range of sizes. The comfort level was night and day. Also the narrow thick shoulder straps on the lite af were painfully uncomfortable. Lite af is a great company, but the design like many cottage ultralight backpacks are decidedly for men. I so wanted to love the lite af but it didnt work for me at all. I'm sure they would have repaired it but I didnt have time and the only thing I liked was the bottom pocket. If you're a woman with narrow hips maybe it would be ok, but women also have an extra dip in the shoulders so the thin cushioned straps just dug in whereas the GG pack has wider more coverage over the shoulder and not as thick and again was way better for female anatomy. My other choice after seeing so many pack designs on the trail was the atom pack but didnt have the luxury time. 6 moons has a pack with the criteria but are heavier and didnt respond (2021 covid and not back to full business) and osprey makes a lighter version specifically for women but having tried one on, it fit me oddly and was noisey. Plus the gg pack is wider at the bottom whereas the af is a chimney shape so again the GG carry was better. Anyway, 2 cents. Having said all of that i see that the 46 you mention does have more substantial hip belt and wider shoulder straps. Ha! Oh well. ... the hip belt on the lite af pack came to my hip bone and didnt wrap around so hopefully the 46 would do so. Oh and gg pack $100 less.
I have an idea Dixie. You need to team up with a company who makes packs and design a pack for thru hikers that would include the options you'd like to see in a pack.
Definitely pack design specifically for women needs more attention in the cottage companies. There's so mamy of us out there. Men can carry more on shoulders and women on hips. .... in general.
Curious about the pack liner- you mentioned it was included with the pack I think, but do you happen to know what the material was? Nylofume or something?
Thru hiked the PCT with the Atom+ 40l. Loved it. The removable frame and hipbelt meant I could go even lighter in OR and it carried still very well during long water carries. You're right, the bottom pocket is so nice! I carried my small umbrella and trash in there. The backpack held up great with only a little delamination on one side (I got Liteskin they used to offer) but this was due to my mistake as Deet got on it. I liked it so much that I just ordered a Atom 30l in Robic which was reasonably priced for me. No more frame and hipbelt for me - when I can get away with it, lol. It has the stretch front pocket which I am looking forward to try even though I worry if everything will fit. But if I need more space I still have the Atom+. The 30liter is for weekend trips or hut trails (like the Tour du Mont Blanc) or for low food carry trails (like the Camino). Can't wait to get it.
Hey, I'd love to get a lighter pack, I'm still using an old school big heavy canvas backpack, with aluminium frame etc.! Not uncommon for me to be carrying 20kgs or more.

You could maybe try some salomon soft flasks with the xa filter cap? Sounds like those should fit pretty well!
How many days of food carry have you done? Do you ever wish you'd gone with the EP60?

However, one draw back to shorter padding section is that if you are someone who wears the hip belt around your iliac crest, then the padding won’t fully wrap to the front of your hip bones. This will mean less load transfer and less comfort. Another major drawback is that if you put a hip belt pocket on, which rides on the padding section of the belt, then the pocket will sit further back on your side instead of on the front of your hip bones. This makes it much harder to get in and out of the pocket, especially one-handed because you’ll be reaching down and back instead of just down, it will also likely interfere with the main pack shoulder strap attachment point and it may also be harder to uses the pack’s bottom, side water bottle holders.
So if you’re someone who wears your hip belt lower or actually around your pelvic girdle and want to easily access your pockets while hiking, I suggest choosing a hip belt with a longer padded section. It may weight a little more, but your pack will be more comfortable, carry loads more efficiently and will be far more functional.
As long as the length of the strap section allows you to cinch the pack as you gain or lose weight, then you’ll be fine. Other than a long thru hike, your measurement around your hips doesn’t fluctuate as much as it does around your higher, natural waist.
Anyone in the UK or travelling to the Lake District at any time can go into the shop to try on the packs to see which pack size/ hip belt size etc fits best for them which was a nice touch I used. Not going to help those who can't make it across but really helped me decide on sizing.

I have a custom Mo 60L and love it! Longest hike so far was 60+ miles at Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico and it carried all of my individual and crew gear beautifully!
I used the Mo for thrus of PCT and AZT and loved it. Taking it on TA in November and sorry you not coming for now. I find hip belt pockets too fiddly and use the Roo fanny pack by Atom which is so handy
I have the Mo 60 as well and one of the customizations I ordered was a slightly deeper left hand side pocket and I use that to keep my x-mid in. Way more secure than strapping to the bottom and easy access. Highly recommend that mod. Loving the pack by the way.
That price is insane for a regular cottage vendor pack there all basically the same save for some slight differences to make it there’s
I used Mo pack on Pieterpad (trail from North to South of Netherlands) earlier this year and although a newbie, I was really comfortable and loving the pack. Yes, its very pricey but for me it was worth it. The bottom pocket is amazing and there is little hole on the other side of the main opening which is meant for small garbage such as snack wrappings. Genius!
I went for the standard Mo 50 [xl torso, XL waist] as a conventional hiker I intentionally chose a smaller size than I would have initially, and this as intended has driven me to select gear that will fit. Also I sometimes use a side pocket for tent and sleeping mat, which both fit. A characteristic I found odd is that when full and heavy it fits better than when I have eaten all my food, which is definitely not a problem.
I'm planning to get an Atom pack. I'm lucky enough to live about half an hour away from the factory. I called them up and they said I could visit for a fitting if I wanted to. The lady I spoke to was super friendly, they sound like a good company. Once I have my other gear dialed in I'm going to take them up on the offer and book a fitting appointment.
I got the Custom Mo 50 and used it on the Trilho do Pescadores in Portugal and absolutely loved it. Super comfortable, especially the hip belt that allows perfect weight transfer and the bottom pocket is just fabulous. Also, there is a small hole on the left side of the bottom pocket that serves as a little garbage disposal area - grab a snack from the right, eat it on the go and dispose of the wrapper in the same pocket on the other side, genius!
Atom packs may well be a good alternative to the many American brands for people in the UK, as shipping and import duty on imports from the US often make them not a viable option.
That pack liner is also smell containing. Like an Opsak. Also, $380 isn't really that expensive for a custom pack. Think of it like custom clothing. You're basically designing how the pack will look, what it's made of, what accessories you're adding/subtracting, etc. So really, paying that much for a mass made pack vs. a custom pack, and I"m going custom every time.
I have a Mo 40 that I really like and that I use whenever I go multi-day hiking. As you Dixie, I miss the bottom loops for the tents but that can be resolved easily with cords. As for the PeakDesign Capture, using the other set of crews (the ones requiring the Allen key) makes it far easier.
I love my Mo 60. One of the best things that I customized were 2 Avocado pockets, i.e. one additional stretch mesh pocket on each side above the pockets for the water bottles. They are perfect for storing small items with immediate access or even avocados or tomatoes without smashing them.

I bought the Mo50 this past Spring, and so far, I love it. I bought the "stock" option, so I didn't get quite as much customaizability with it, but I also got it significantly less than a fully custom rig. And the setup I got has been very good for me. I've only put about 60 miles or so on mine, so it's still newish to me but it was a major upgrade from my 4 pound Gregory pack qnd my 7 pound NorthFace pack. I didn't get the hip belt pockets, so I picked up a good sized fanny pack, and that's worked quite well for $7, rather than the cost of the hip belt pockets. As far as the Capture Clip, I didn't like the way the camera felt when clipped to the shoulder strap, so I use the capture clip along with the capture pad, and string the pad onto the sternum strap. Was somewhat annoying when I wanted to take the pack off. But as far as walking with it, the sternum strap placement was quite comfy. And that bottom pocket is awesome! I thought I would use it for garbage, but I found it to be a perfect stash for my paper maps, which I laminate before hitting the trail (I know, who still uses paper maps, but I do...). In the shoulder pockets. I store a 700ml bottle on one side and my phone and battery brick on the other side. The setup has worked really well for me.
Can't live without paper maps. You can't really get a feel for the wider environment on a phone map, you need to be able to open it up and see the big picture. Also, they don't need batteries!
How many days of food carry have you done? Do you ever wish you'd gone with the EP60?
@@ewik939 I've carried as much as 4 days. I always Dehydrate food at home and pack in freezer ziplocs, rather than buying the prepared pouches. I find those commercial meals are good but the packaging seems bulky and stiff. I did have to use a bear canister once with it. I strapped it to the top of the mo50 with the Y strap, and it was fine.

I just finished hiking the PCT with an Atom Mo 50. I have a lot of experience hiking and I can say that this has been my absolutely favourite pack, so comfy and well built. I never had any issues or pain, even with the extra weight in the Sierras. I actually bought this week another pack from them 🙊
It's a stupid-good pack. It carries incredibly well and I'm not sure I'll ever go down do a no-frame because of the comfort.

I got really lucky with my backpack. I purchased a 65L pack from Walmart and it is a very comfortable one, it only cost $65. I have been able to load up 40 lbs without losing comfort. Though I usually keep it at around 30 lbs.
I wrote awhile back about going through open heart surgery and with your encouragement I was slowly able to regain most of my strength. Thank you for that.
I never expected a Walmart pack to fit so well.

Great review and great pack. I have the atom+ which is slightly lighter. I would recommend anyone buying from atom packs to contact them with any customisable features they want. You could have asked for the loops etc. I asked for larger/longer side pockets on one side and my tent goes in there. I swapped out my hip pocket clips with z clips. And then finally swapped out the hip pockets with some larger ones also made in the UK 🇬🇧 by wild sky gear.

I have a Mo60 and am in two minds about it. My Exos 58 seemed to swallow my kit much easier. I find the two side pockets too shallow for 1 litre water bottles and the absence of a brain pocket is something I’m still coming to terms with. I agree that the bottom pocket which is stretchy helps makes up for the lack of brain pocket. The pack is well built and certainly tough - I’ve covered close to 200 miles (only got mine a few weeks ago) on trails plus a couple of mountain climbs and the only leaks I’ve experienced have been in the hip pockets. I also use a nylofume pack liner.
I hear you,about the pouch attachments. Would love them sticthed on, or shoulder strap style pockets on the hip belt that go under the detachable pouches. Love my atom +50
I have just ordered my third Atom Pack. Build quality is second to none and the customisable options will always push up production costs, hence the price. I agree though, bottom loops would be good!
If you are getting a customised one, and haven't already had the "in production" message, you should consider dropping them an email to see if they can add bottom loops for you. Their customer support is brilliant, and I have found them very helpful, and accommodating. ☺

I carry my shelter on the top via a Y strap, but I never get in my pack during the day. I carry everything I would need for the day in the outside pockets.

I agree with your assessment. I have an Atom + and a Light AF. The bottom pockets are amazing. My Atom Pack just isn’t quite as comfortable as my ULA or Outdoor Vitals Packs for total loads that go between 18-22 lbs. for smaller loads, I love my Pa’lante and my Nashville Cutaway, but they are best for total loads under 15lbs.

Dixie instead of the bottom loops have you tried using all that bungee across the big pocket to have your tent on the outside? I was doing it all the time on the PCT and it worked just as well for me. I have an older version of the same pack with about 3000 miles on it and nothing have failed except the attachments for the belt pockets, which I replaced with tiny carabiners. Really good gear I think!

I have the Mo 50 custom and love it, yes I agree about the loops but that's my fault for not asking. I don't think I would buy any other pack now. As for the pack liner, like you I was sceptical but that thing is strong and robust. Ref the hip belt I think it is a huge plus that you can change the belt easily if you need a smaller or larger one.

I had an Atom+ and a Mo from Atom packs back when they were still using Xpac. They’re really well built and the custom options are pretty awesome, but for me the shoulder straps were incredibly uncomfortable. Even with an 8 pound base weight and minimal food I ended up really sore after every trip. I ended up selling both. Maybe the straps are different now. I really wanted to love them, but they just didn’t work for me.

I dont understand why Peak Design is sleeping on making a bigger version...not just slightly wider but also one that can accomodate thicker straps...but then again sleeping pad manufacturers were slow to the demand of wider 25 inch pads without having to resort to long version. I guess unless these guys get out there and hike, not just design stuff in front of their Apple, that's what the customers are going to have to deal with
What I like about these packs is they are made in the US. Unlike so many other packs. I have gone done the UL rabbit hole and to me they are a bit heavy. I understand people who are carrying a lot of camera equipment a beefier pack may be needed. I try to keep my base weight very lite so I will stay with Zpacks. Zpacks also has a similar issue with their belt pockets. It’s an easy fix.

I really like custom sizing I always had problems with standard S M L sizing I went with a liteAF because my torso measurement was right in the middle of their sizing and it came in coyote brown so it matches my dog I was a little worried I got the sizing wrong at 1st but once it came and I got to try it out it's been amazing I have a longer torso and a smaller waist having the right fit made carrying over 30lbs feel more comfortable than my standard medium day hiking bag with a half full water bladder and when I get to the low mid 20s I barely need trekking poles having a good fit makes such a big difference

I also have an EP60 and somehow it doesn't seem right in terms of capacity. My Osprey 48 fitted my kit better. How does that get explained? I do like the mesh pocket on the front as it works well for drying items. I also love the waist belt pockets that are actually useable. The shoulder pockets of the Mo work well for me and to date it has not leaked despite exposure to torrential 14 hour rain. My Osprey Exos would wet out and leak in such conditions. I also use a nylofume bag liner. In terms of comfort my Osprey won hands down. Im in two minds about reverting to an Exos 48 but after having invested so much money in the Mo I am reluctant to lose financially but find myself hankering after the Exos.

Have the Atom + and have changed out my belt and for me it has brought the hip pockets closer to the front of my body which helps. But i agree they are horrible to get on and off. New clip please Tom @atompacks

I had the lite af curve on my pct hike and if you're male it's fine, if female I would go for something with a decent hip belt. The small hip belt on the lite af ripped from the pack at the half way point on the PCT. I was hiking with an anatomy professor and we mused a lot about packs for men and women. The company that could send a new pack to me quickest and have a wrap around hip belt and still be ultralight was Gossamer Gear. I bought the G4 20 that is around 40 liters. I don't carry camera gear but they do have a full range of sizes. The comfort level was night and day. Also the narrow thick shoulder straps on the lite af were painfully uncomfortable. Lite af is a great company, but the design like many cottage ultralight backpacks are decidedly for men. I so wanted to love the lite af but it didnt work for me at all. I'm sure they would have repaired it but I didnt have time and the only thing I liked was the bottom pocket. If you're a woman with narrow hips maybe it would be ok, but women also have an extra dip in the shoulders so the thin cushioned straps just dug in whereas the GG pack has wider more coverage over the shoulder and not as thick and again was way better for female anatomy. My other choice after seeing so many pack designs on the trail was the atom pack but didnt have the luxury time. 6 moons has a pack with the criteria but are heavier and didnt respond (2021 covid and not back to full business) and osprey makes a lighter version specifically for women but having tried one on, it fit me oddly and was noisey. Plus the gg pack is wider at the bottom whereas the af is a chimney shape so again the GG carry was better. Anyway, 2 cents. Having said all of that i see that the 46 you mention does have more substantial hip belt and wider shoulder straps. Ha! Oh well. ... the hip belt on the lite af pack came to my hip bone and didnt wrap around so hopefully the 46 would do so. Oh and gg pack $100 less.

I have an idea Dixie. You need to team up with a company who makes packs and design a pack for thru hikers that would include the options you'd like to see in a pack.
Definitely pack design specifically for women needs more attention in the cottage companies. There's so mamy of us out there. Men can carry more on shoulders and women on hips. .... in general.

Thru hiked the PCT with the Atom+ 40l. Loved it. The removable frame and hipbelt meant I could go even lighter in OR and it carried still very well during long water carries. You're right, the bottom pocket is so nice! I carried my small umbrella and trash in there. The backpack held up great with only a little delamination on one side (I got Liteskin they used to offer) but this was due to my mistake as Deet got on it. I liked it so much that I just ordered a Atom 30l in Robic which was reasonably priced for me. No more frame and hipbelt for me - when I can get away with it, lol. It has the stretch front pocket which I am looking forward to try even though I worry if everything will fit. But if I need more space I still have the Atom+. The 30liter is for weekend trips or hut trails (like the Tour du Mont Blanc) or for low food carry trails (like the Camino). Can't wait to get it.
