  • “Why did they remove the mom? Did something happen?”
Today’s video explores a famous 2chan mystery and urban legend in Japan surrounding bizarre and disturbing edits made to a well-known canned foods commercial during the 1980's. In its county of origin, this mystery is simply referred to as サンスキップ or “SunSkip,” and is up there with likes of Hitogata in terms of online renown.

Except that they didn't think that. They didn't think that they'd still be using that ad five years later. What they didn't think is that when they were still using that ad she would be in an ad for a direct competitor to their product doing the exact same thing as in their ad. It had absolutely nothing to do with them thinking she wouldn't get another job. So you're laughing at your own stupidity.

I, like many others, is happy to know that there wasn't a darker reason as to why the mother was censored out. I still find the poor editing on the revised commercial kind of unnerving, which sucks since it's actually pretty catchy. If you ever think about talking about another unnerving Japanese ad, there's this one called "garden"
It was mainly seen as "scary" because all it showed was a static shot of a field in a countryside with a semi acoustic song playing in the background. A boat then randomly appears and text that says "Garden" I personally don't see it as creepy but I don't know heh

Thanks for the explanation! I'm a little suprised that during the bubble economy of the 80s, when Japan was swimming in money, that they'd run the same commercials for years on end. These days, it's rare for any ad campaign to last more than 6 months to a year, lest consumer fatigue set in.

I grew up in Canada in the 00s and I definitely saw a lot of late 90s commercials, especially PSAs funded by the government, but also for simpler things like Pepsi or Coca-Cola (that was particularly weird when it was an ad with characters from a show that hadn't been on air for years).

In my country there are a motor oil ads that straight out from 90s that still runs today. (I didn't watch TV since 2018 that was last time I saw it. perhaps I'm very wrong , even though that was impressive) due to the meme-y of the ads that people fond on it.

Depends on the ad campaign and how successful it is.
If it's good and memorable it can become a staple. Why fix what isn't broken, and make a new commercial, if the product hasn't cahnged and the old one is still extremely effective?
Look at the M&Ms Christmas ad or the Cadbury Eggs ad from the 90s
      Is still aired every year.
The Hershey's Kisses Bells ad is from 1989 and it or its updated version is still aired every year.
The Tootsie Pop ad from 1968 (55 years old) is still aired around Halloween in its condensed form of just the Mr. Owl part, but even being born in 88 I've seen the full 1968 ad on TV over the years.

I'm gonna guess after just watching the intro. The actress was involved in some scandal and the company wanted to erase her from the commercial. But why not just reshoot a new commercial with another lady?
    Edit after the reveal:
The real reason is pretty funny, but makes sense. I still question why the company didn't just shoot a new version of the commercial with a new actress.
Kinda reminds me of when the guy who did commercials for the PS3 played the same character in ads for another company and got in hot water with Sony.

    • @danielmukhlis5709
      @danielmukhlis5709 9 місяців тому +17

As Sakura Stardust had pointed out, they probably didn’t want to shoot a new one ‘cause this is a pretty successful campaign. Or like everything else, it’s because of money. Or they could be very angry that the same actress appeared in their competitor’s commercial. All of these things could be factored into their baffling decision honestly.

I think the Sunskip story could make for a great lost media/internet horror story if exaggerated a bit.
Imagine some 20-something/30-something person is on the internet one night when they find some video on a message board, the thumbnail awakens a memory and they decide to give it a look. As they watch, the video fills them with nostalgia, but they also start to get creeped out. "Why do they cut around this mom actress? I remember her from the old commercial, but this is different-" just as they are being drawn in, their thought is interrupted by a cheap jumpscare with an edited still image, the OP's idea of a joke.
Over the next couple of days, our protagonist's thoughts are invaded by the nostalgic commercial. They begin to research it and anything revolving around its creation, slowly becoming obsessed.
They are able to find a few people willing to talk about the commercial, but no one wants to talk about the mom for some reason.
After many sleepless nights of working, the protagonist tracks down an unedited copy, but as they watch the commercial appears almost identical to the edit they saw on the internet. The mom is hidden from view; desperate to know more, our protagonist becomes more intently drawn in to the video. With only seconds left, the view pans to the actress' face, hiderously deformed and nightmarish, partially obscured by static, the view zooming tighter and tighter in on her visage as the protagonist lets out a protracted, bloodcurdling scream.
But, that's just my rough idea. I'm no writer, just someone that comes up with ideas on the internet.

In order to provide a much-needed respite for the children, who were annoyed by their mother's toxic presence, she was ultimately removed, bringing about a sense of relief and happiness for the children. ☺️

I just saw a Japanese CM for Philadelphia cream cheese which features what looks like a older band of singers (in package matching blue and yellow suits) with out seeing any faces. Just long shots of these guys dancing. I wondered if they were a former Johnny's boy band. It's from Japanese commercials HD from 5 days or so ago at the 7:38 mark. Just thought it was weird!

The mother in the commercial was considered lost media for so long and all they had to do is see her live performances. This was funny and interesting usually these lost media ads or things overall has actors and actresses that moved on living life but she was casually chilling and living life doing what she loves. This was was interesting and fun. Cool video. ^_^

It must have been a shock and a rush for the SSK ad team to find out what was happening, so it's no surprised that it ended up hastily shot.
I wonder how much longer it lasted in that edited form? This is definitely the kind of thing that would send your team scrambling.

This reminds me of the “Bat Embargo,” where during the height of the DCAU, DC had several different Batman shows running all at once and afraid that kids would be confused, made a rule that certain Batman characters could not be used on two shows at the same time. The main victim of this was KidsWB’s “The Batman,” and was why Robin couldn’t show up in that show until Teen Titans had ended.

Hi loved the video, I hate to address this and I hope you don't take it the wrong way but maybe when you cut to a commercial don't cut into a cut like at 5:36 and at 10:46 there is a weird Sony flashing maybe other people pointed out. Maybe I'm just nitpicking but these things detract me and made me miss part of the video.

Sounds very similar to Jerry Lambert (a.k.a. the $299 PS3 Slim guy).
He starred in a dozen PS3 slim commercials for Playstation as the character Kevin Butler, but later disappeared. Turned out he got sued by Sony after he starred in a Nintendo Wii Bridestone ad, which was a breach in contract.

idk why they dont just make new ads lmao. If the ads so successful just recreate it with other actor/actress. I know its possibly wont capture the same magic, it's easier than just do some lazy edits like this and eventually end up in sakura stardust video lol. But again it's japan things lol. In my country I get sick see same influencers and person basically everywhere in ads even in multiple different fcmg. Bcs his family so famous lmao.
