  • Knight Scoop is a popular Japanese variety show that takes on viewer-requested mysteries. Today, we’re taking a look at the first and only time a mystery on Knight Scoop was deemed unsolvable and suddenly dropped completely. The one singular time since its premiere in 1988.
Why was that? Was there more to it?
Today we’re exploring an unsolved mystery known as the vinyl rope incident.

as a person with ocd, the fact that she was terrified of stopping tying the ties rings the bell; it could be a compulsion, and schizophrenia is often associated with higher rates of ocd.

This was always my assumption. They probably figured out who was doing it and why, but it probably was a sad story. Since the show was clearly made to be humorous, putting a mentally ill person on blast on national television for laughs would've been in very bad taste. That would also explain why the store owner refused to talk about it. How would you react if a TV crew of comedians came in asking about it? I'd be afraid they came here to make fun of her.

I haven't heard about this happening with dogs, but with cats. Some cats "have" two houses. They're treated like outdoor cats, the ones that come and go, so both families think they own the cat, so the cat eats food twice a day or more. I think maybe something happens too like that with the chonker.

I was literally just thinking about that! As soon as that story was brought up in this video, all these years later after playing it on my Dreamcast as a kid, it now make sense. I thought it ways always a weird point that the citizens in the game mentioned that the Statue would have a super natural element to it and move on its own. I figured that this little fact would lend the game doing something creative with the Statue, but nothing happens. I always felt something was missing in translation!

I know that they handled the whole thing rather strangely and abruptly, but I think that it was also potentially (although by no means exclusively) their attempt to allow the woman in question to retain their dignity. Just imagine how much added stress and anxiety she would have faced in unintentionally becoming a tourist attraction of sorts?
And whilst I wholeheartedly agree with you about Japan's attitudes towards both mental health and disability in general im thankful that by design or accident this woman was spared from the media circus and sideshowesque objectification that featuring her would have likely entailed.

Yeah, this would actually probably end so much worse in the west, we'd probably terrorize the woman, at least nowadays. Not only would she be shown and appear on TV (even though that should be illegal, but whatever), but we'd make her a freak show. We treat privacy and right to image very badly in the West.

Yeah i 90% believe the woman with mental health problems is the reason why they took the plug of the episode. Seeing the light humor of the show and how every single case was so chilled resolved they could have just pressed on with the case not thinking much and seeing the real reason of it decided to cut it out. Shows like this spend a lot of money with travels and expenses so they cant just not air an episode, you need to record something or else there is no episode of the week, after that day i imagine the procedures to take on a case was very well revised.

I at first thought that it might have been juvenile gang/gang related activity, like marking their territory to let other gangs know who’s boss there. An older disabled woman with a potentially deteriorating mental state may actually be a more plausible answer. I hope she’s well if she’s still living and if not, that she lived out the rest of her days pleasantly.

its possible she suffered from a seriously bad unchecked case of obsessive personality disorder , its not unheard of, ad that to possible schizophrenia, its possible she believes something bad will happen if she stops like the end of the world or her own death... there was case of a serial killer that believed he had kill people to stave of the apocalypse (im not saying she is a killer)

This very much gives off an OCD vibe. A thought getting stuck in someone’s head causing her to compulsively have to do this random act. I’d guess the show figured this out and with the stigma/privacy issues banned the episodes conclusion. They had to air something so they gave it a bit of a creepy abrupt ending playing into the mystery aspect.
Japan having extremely strict privacy laws to this day, especially about filming or photographing people with out consent, would make a satisfying conclusion nearly impossible. I’m kinda thankful for that given how in the US they would have just shoved a camera in this person’s face which feels extremely gross.

Hope you consider doing more videos on TV programmes like this, I really like your presentation style and it's easy to tell that you put great effort into your research! Keep up the great work!
A small thing I noticed when watching Sacchan's story (thanks for providing the link in the comments) that I just wanted to give a little heads up on: There is small translation mistake that I assume you just copied from the subtitles in the clip you used, as they also got it wrong. The dog was not eating the same food as her and she was curious about why he gained weight and she didn't, but she actually wrote that the dog had gained so much weight that he probably weighed about as much as her. (It says 今では私の体重と変わらないかもしれません in the letter, which would be "Right now, his weight probably doesn't differ from mine"). It's a bit of an unusual grammatical structure for native speakers of I think most European languages (my native language is German and while you could built a similar sentence, it would be extremely awkward and unnatural) but I feel like it's surprisingly common in formal (especially) written Japanese. Hope that helps a bit in your studies 🙏🍀

Nagata Kabi's books about her alcoholism and dealing with the stress of being queer in Japan said a lot. It was really dark. (My Lesbian Experience with Loneliness etc) I am entirely unsurprised by this whole thing.
I hope the woman who was doing that is OK and feels better these days. I hope she got what she needed. OCD is life destroying.

What a deep dig in this quirky investigation series. I think there were also paranormal reporter shows back then so it must have been a popular format.

At the time this aired, Japanese media was still going through a supernatural boom. My guess is that they did indeed want to avoid complications from the event, but also didn’t want a “ruined” segment, so they opted to create a mystery that pulled viewership rather than a sad story that potentially pushed viewers away.

I vastly misunderstood what Knight Scoop was about when you first described it. I thought it was some kinda true crime investigation show, we have one in the states that i forget the name of. Instead it just seems to be like Mythbusters but without the science and explosions?

  • @AntonioIdeguchi

I'm a huge fan of Knight Scoop and I have the Knight Scoop DVD with this episode (Vol. 13). Just some comments about it. The tantei was not Kitano Makoto, but Miyabi from Tommy's. The blue tapes that vanished from the box in front of the store were removed by the Police after Miyabi called them - a high patent officer with a cap appears right after it. The box itself had the Police badge, it seems like an emergency communication station. The Police officer mounted in the bicycle said that tieing the box was not a crime, more as a transgression.

    • @AntonioIdeguchi
      @AntonioIdeguchi Рік тому

One more thing, Miyabi guesses in the end of the episode that it seems like there is a perimeter of 3km, where the ties start at a gas station and end at a public playground, so maybe there is a background of a person losing its child for some accident or something worse, and this stills haunt this person...

Having lived in Japan for nine years, you aren't wrong about the issues with mental health. There were only hints of normalization even when I left which was... a month ago.
I don't think it was a hoax either, since if it were done for ratings, it would likely not be so strongly suppressed.
Unfortunately it's probably the fact that it was a sad reason, so they couldn't really mess with it too much on a variety show.

I actually first heard about the Curse of the Colonel from Arakawa Hiromu's manga, Silver Spoon/Gin no Saji, which referenced it. It led me down quite an amusing rabbit hole.
As for the main subject of the vid, all things considered, them deciding to just cut things off, even abruptly, to have a mentally unwell person retain some privacy instead of being the subject of a comedy show seems ultimately a good thing.

I hate to break it to you, but things have not gotten better in Japan. I have a friend that has lived there since the early 2000, more specifically in Urawa and he told me, very very recently (a month or so ago) that in his area the people made a complaint to the city because a school for kids with disabilities was rumoured to be built and they did not want it because they though it would soil the good looks and cleanness of the area. Is awful, but it is happening still. Very disgusting.

The clip about the ties: I remember seeing a different Japanese show air an episode about these ties. That show, during the late 2000s, I forget the name, was a show mostly about paranormal topics as well as mysteries. It also has a comedy aspect to it. It had a panel of men and women as well as a special guest. There was an episode where they spoke about an Olympic team that represented a small country. They had caught the attention of a reporter because they had lost all games but one. Winning that one game, the players had celebrated as though they had won the Olympic gold. Well to make this short, the mystery here was that as the reporter explained why it was a mystery, it was eventually found that those players weren't official players of the sport, they had apparently forged passports to make their way out of their country. The mystery being, who were they, how did they manage to replace the original players, and what happened to the original players?. Well that same episode aired a clip about these ties. In the end, the show had expressed that this whole mystery was probably put up by request of the producers from Night Scoop. They cited some other show that did something similar for ratings or to fill in the slot.

I don’t get it. Why didn’t they just abandon the story when they felt they couldn’t complete it satisfactorily? Just not airing it would have done far more to protect privacy and let the issue quietly fade away.

Japan's collectivist mentality means that standing out is not considered societally harmonious. Unfortunately, having a mental or physical disability means you are not in harmony with the others and therefore you essentially are unpersoned (as in, you are treated like you don't exist.) Would love to know how this works with their rockstars and mascots though, they seem to stick out quite a bit...

Japan's mental health care is even more dire in my understanding. There aren't a lot of mental health professionals at all because of how the severity of stigma keeps them tucked away.
I know we (in the US) don't have enough professionals either, but it's at least not an uncommon field for people to go into. Hopefully that increases as we continue being more open about these things and hopefully the same is true there.

The picture of the blue ties seem awfully high off the ground, depending on Kitano's height, for a small woman to tie if he is standing upright.
