Just like the various other aspects of a dress shirt, whether that be its overall fit, its cuff style, its buttons, and so on, the collar of the shirt also comes in many variations.
Shirt Collar Parameters:
1. Collar Stiffness
From the 1820s to the 1930s, stiff collars were the norm. These collars were detachable for replacement in an era where effective detergents and laundering were not available.
2. Collar Height
Collar height is the measure of how high a collar sits on your neck, measured from the fold down to the point.
3. Collar Size
Related to height is overall size. Some collars, like the cutaway, which we will discuss below, are small and minimalist. Other collars are quite large.
4. Collar Spread
Lastly, there is collar spread-basically, the distance between the points of the collar. The wider the spread, the more aggressive.
Types of Shirt Collars
1. The Point Collar
In North America, the standard or default business collar is likely the point. As evident from the name, this style is characterized by the fact that the collar tips are pointed.
2. The Tab Collar
Speaking of vintage, within the same spread range as the point collar but with a distinctly classic look is the tab collar, which features an underlying tab beneath each collar leaf that fastens on the top button.
3. The Club Collar
This collar originated at Eton College, which had previously been the incubator of Beau Brummell’s stylistic innovations.
4. The Pin Collar
The various collars with a smaller distance between the leaves or points lend themselves readily to the use of collar pins, clips, or bars.
5. The Square Collar
There are also shirt collars that are quite small with a minimal spread, among them the square collar, so called because the collar points are squared off. These were worn, usually in detachable form, in the early twentieth century, but are quite hard to find today.
6. The Button Down Collar
Although it originated on England’s polo fields, the button down collar has become an American favorite after it was introduced by Brooks Brothers, especially as part of Ivy, prep, and trad styles.
7. The Spread Collar
Once the distance between the collar point widens we have a spread collar, noted as the default collar of London (and European) business wear.
8. The Cutaway Collar
The cutaway collar is a type of spread collar that is defined by the wide distance between points (over 6″) or the obtuse angle formed by said points.
9. The Wing Collar
Reserved only for the most formal events is the wing collar, also known as the winged or wingtip, belongs among the minimalist collars because its points are quite small. - Навчання та стиль
This is why I love the Gentleman's Gazette you go into deep theory on menswear that no other youtube channel provides.
Yeah they deserve more subs like at least 1 million lol
Almost there.

I'm a woman and your channel is both professional and helpful for me. Didn't find any female fashion channel with this level of professionalism.
Stiffness, height, size, spread. And I was convinced Preston kept it clean!
I love Raphael and Kyle but i have to admit that you are my favorite person on all of the UA-cam platform to watch. You are so well spoken and you just have that special something about you.
Thanks for your kind words and loyal viewership, Ricky! Glad you're enjoying our content. :)
- Preston
They are all my favorites! It's hard to pick who I like most because they all have unique styles. I wonder if this is how parents of multiple kids feel 🤔
@@gentlemansgazette I was hoping Raphael or Kyle would reply and say something sassy (yet humourous). Haha. :)
This is a one of the most concise and comprehensive video about shirt collars I have ever seen so well done.
A collar style you forgot to mention Preston is a Roman collar (aka Priest/Clerical) collar which is similar a mix of the regular collar, square collar and band collar but has a small opening for a piece of cloth or plastic is inserted to form a priestly/clerical appearance. Not to mention the full roman collar which is a round collar that is attached to a shirt to give a more formal priest appearance. Otherwise great video (though I understand that both Roman collars are typically reserved for clergymen)
I like this Preston guy
Preston definitely is my favorite lizardperson
Thank you Preston. I've recently become a big fan of Winchester point collars with a hidden button loop, but it's good to see the vast options there are in collar styles.
Female watcher for textile care. A lot applies to women’s fashion, too. I want to commend how Preston shows how to build slowly and prudently on a budget. I recall scrambling after college and law school to build a professional wardrobe. Brooks Brother and Ann Taylor has only a few items. Women were just starting to enter NY law and financial firms. The senior partners did not want us in fashion forward. But they loved spray on pants on the young receptionists. There were debates about how to push the edge a bit. Your channel is great for educating. Showing men who are not dripping in daddy’s money is a smart move. A differentiator. I plan to purchase your accessories to incorporate in my legal wear. As a tall woman. I do but men’s wear but fit issues remain. Ralph Lauren knows the conversion process but Macy’s salespeople are stunned.
The ultimate style channel on the internet. For men. Woman have their own style channels. This one, is for real men and Marines. These men are of the highest standard and knowledge.
Thanks Preston, I had to purchase another shirt and this helped me make sure i had the best idea about how to mix it up.

Great video, Preston I've honestly been waiting for it.
Great video. It finally answered all of my questions on shirt collars.
This is a great, and informative video. Thank you, Preston!
You should make a "reviewing my sub's outfit" section.
Thanks guys! Really needed that in depth video on shirt collars. I look at dress shirts so often and now I know some great tips for buying
I say keep it simple with traditional straight point regular or button down style dress shirts. Unless you wear Armani or Italian 🇮🇹 style suits I'd wear conservative style ties, shirts 👔.
I really appreciate these videos. Preston, you know your stuff. I am wondering if (and perhaps you have done so already) you could show us a video of classic menswear from the 1930's? I am very fond of that particular era but do not know how to go about creating a wardrobe dedicated to that theme. Thank you Preston.
You did a wonderful job and i appreciate it
I've needed a guide like this for a long time. Thanks Preston!
The Goodfellas Spear Collar is Badass 🔥🔥 Good Video as always Preston 👊🏼
Thanks Preaton I absolutely needed to watch this vid 👍 along with Kyle's how to pair tie-knots & shirt collars vid 👍
This channel just gets better than ever!
I have wanted this video for a long time.
Thank you, much appreciated.
Great Video, thank you Preston.
The men's suit is one of the best things in this world I don't know why but ya.
Very detailed video on collar alone ! 👍🏼🤜🏼🤛🏼
OMG!! Theres so much info about Men formal dress it makes my head spinn round round, I thing its a job by its own to be awere of all those things.
Great video and training. Thank you.
Good job! Very informative.
Great content mate .... thumbs up 👍
Great video guys! Very informative! Will you guys be doing a video guide of the Neopolitan style?
Long ago, a mentor suggested the length of collar points should coincide approximately with the notches in a jacket lapel. Still a valid guideline? BTW: This was enjoyable (thank you)!
i was waiting for a video like this too
Very elegant and useful video
Thank you! :)
An excellent video sir .
My issue has always been the girth if my neck... as a college football player, I spent a lot of time in the weight room and post college I competed in both powerlifting and other strength competitions... my neck was at one point 24” in circumference, whist now, in my mid-50s, I’ve slimmed down to “only” 20” lol... suffice it to say that my only options for appropriately fitted biz attire has been to go the bespoken route.... of which I can now take advantage of digital commerce and outsource my needs to far-east based tailor operations.... definitely 1st world problems lol
Good job, keep going.
Rundowm of dress shirt brands by price points would be a great video topic. Please feel free leave other suggestions in the replies. I would love to hear some more ideas from fellow Gentleman Gazzeters. Please like so more people can see. Thank you.
that would be great!
Especially with MTO brands
Waiting for the video where you compare Indochino with Brooks Brothers. Also...GOODFELLAS !!
banded collar FTW
The collars worn everyday at Eton are still club collars! They're called Arundel collars and they are still detached and starched.
I came here to learn how to choose a shirt for my dad, i didn't expect to have my heart stolen
You forgot the tab collar.
He didnt
How about stand up/imperial collars? Where do they land on the formality scale?
Would you please consider making a video explaining the neopolitan style?
I hanker for the day wing collars come back into everyday use.... to me they are so perfect and beautiful..... giving of a distinguished projection of being a confident gentleman to be take seriously in business.
Dear Gentleman's Gazette, what are your thoughts on using detachable collars outside white and black tie?
I may not be speaking for the Gazette, but I wear my detachable collar shirts a lot and often with a black tie. Personally I love it., especially since you can show the little golden knob that holds the collar when you shove the tie a bit down.
I also think that detachable stiff collars (imperials, wings, clubs) are the best choice for a vintage-inspired white/black tie ensemble.
Vintage lovers are into it, and in legal professions in England some still like them. If you like the look and feel of them it might be an option especially if you have soft, detachable turndown collars.
@@gentlemansgazette Darcy Clothing from England has the best detachable collars.
@@catnoir-a-saurus I got mine from Darcyclothing. I believe they supply the collars for peaky blinders as well.
Any chance of a video explaining shoe cobblers and when to resole/repair your shoes?
First! Love it!
Still waiting on most of your ties to come back into stock... 😘😘
In Argentina (and I believe in Latin America in general) wearing a button-down collar with a necktie or with a formal suit is a no-no if you want to be elegant.
Great video that I will definitely need to reference in the future. I hate it when you find a dress shirt pattern and cut thatyou love but the collar doesn't match what you are looking for.
What are your thoughts on the tuxedo t shirt ?
Great overview, but I wonder why you have left out club or penny collars?
Could you make a video on how to style each collar. For example, it mentions that the pointed collar is american business standard, but how to match pointed collars with suits and ties so everything is symmetrical?
Detachable collar video please
I love this guy. he reminds me of Spencer Reid.
Could you do a how to wear outfits like Tony Montana? That would be badass!
What about Brioni, I often see their shirts on President Trump and the collar always seems to sit and look very studious and strong, what type of collar is that?
What about the camp collar? Or is that the pajama collar or form of? Thanks.
spread collars, for whatever the reason have become a thing here in canada too. And I hate them.
Another good vid preston.
Hello, I have a question, how to I wear my detachable collar? Do I wear it over my existing collar over my dress shirt or do I need an entirely new shirt?
I need to wash, restarch and polish my Elton collars, any advise ?
Sadly no imperial collar weren't mentioned :(
overall great video, nicely structured
My favorite is the presidential spread collar. I could wear a shirt and tie every day.
Interesting video. How about those big 1970s style collars? No?
I love them, your picture also, is a sign of culture
Is it still ok to ware a shirt with pin holes without the collar bar
You forgot the imperial collar.
I like 2 tone mens dress shirts. 👔. I remember TV anchors wearing them & was impressed as a teen. 1980s. I have a small(weak) chin & larger head so a spread collar does not look as good as a standard pointed collar.
Is there's a collar on looking for the term for. I didn't find it here. It looks like a French cop and in the absence of the time like torn a decorative length will be used. Is the elyst formal sophisticated version of this is to use an ordinary cufflink With a tie a tie pin will be put between the halis the holes either above below or both.
Is a related question as to how do you strive how far apart the is color fold or from each other.
Preston, are there any guidlines or information on your channel regarding the untucked dress shirt option? Thanks
I'm not sure if I understand your comment correctly, but typically, if a shirt has a tail at the front, (which, in case you don't know, are two flaps of fabric that are separated) it should be tucked in, otherwise, it is to be left untucked. I hope this helped somehow. :)
Hi all, bit late I know but does anyone know anywhere where I can buy shirts that allocate detachable collars for a relatively good price?
12:06 and Mods/Suedeheads
The "tie-gap" is also important, besides the spread or "point-to-point gap": the tie-gap is the gap between the 2 sides of the collar at the junction between collar band and collar attachment. In a wide-spread collar, the tie-gap should be small (2-5mm), in a button-down collar, the tie-gap is normally a bit wider. A pointed collar can have a tie-gap of 1cm in order to make the tie more visible.
Bad are an overlap of left- and right collar at the tie-gap point, or a tie-gap that is too wide
👍
charcoal grey trousers? :o
I prefer the American point collar to the British spread collar and I am British....!!!!
How come you guys never wear ascots? I love them!
US Marine dress uniforms are famous for the Mandarin collar (and trust me it can get uncomfortable)
Sir Preston looks like he should be in the next James Bond movie
First should have been fit/gape. How the collar fits to your neck and if there is a gape in the back when you move or lean forward. A properly fitted shirt collar should move with you and hug your neck without it strangling you. When I buy a shirt I get a European Collar custom fit shirt as it is roomy in the chest and back but not so much to be baggy.
What about continental Europe?
1:12 Gazette: There IS a wide variety, not there ARE a wide variety.
Two button collar and the hidden button down are by far my favorite. I can’t stand short spread collars
Hi, does anyone know where to get good collar bars in a barbell style on a college budget?
From my experience, purchasing them on a budget isn't a good idea. I recommend simply saving up for a Fort Belvedere one. They have fantastic quality products.
What type of shirt is this ?? 18:11
Your the most perfect looking human being on the planet
I've seen the pajama/Cuban/bowling collar called a "camp collar" before. Is this a proprietary name for it, or just one that y'all missed?
The Charlie Sheen, Tommy Bahama look in 2020 is somewhat played out. I've seen men over 40+ wearing "camp shirts" and it's not a good look.
@@DavidLLambertmobile 40 yo can pull it off at the pool or beach. but yah its a youthful look or sure
What about "The curved MJ" collar type?
Ai's getting scary, this robot is so realistic
Such a pity that you didn't discuss matching collar and beard styles! Having a pointy goatee or a fuller beard that makes your face more square shaped completely affects the way the collar fits. I have a longer beard and full cutaways barely stand out as it is mostly covered
does he have a long neck?
🌎🌞🌈🌠🌟💎💎👏👍✋🙋thank you very much.
No "club" collar?
No club collar?
please increase the volume...
spear collars from goodfellas 😏
Didn’t men used to wear wing collars in everyday suits? I see those all the time in Downton Abbey. Could you not do that nowadays or would it look too out of place?
Wing collars are more formal and would work in a wedding/gala setting but probably wouldn't work at the workplace.
I want a fitted point collar shirt with cuffs and tie bar
No shop sells them in my size
And I can’t afford bespoke 😡
Made to measure
