  • Startup of a Lister CS 6/1 2.5kW startomatic set using a single light bulb. The control system detects that the light bulb is in circuit, which begins the starting sequence. These generators were common in rural Britain in the days before the National Grid reached these areas. Many now survive in preservation and some are still used as backup generators.

Presumably, the alternator doubles as the starter motor?

1st light on starts it and last one off stops it. Amazing generators.

Yes the alternator also has DC windings for starting and recharging the starter battery.

Our old post office telephone exchanges used as back up power sources. Simple and stunning.

Probably cheaper to generate your own electricity these days

With diesel it is still more expensive than mains electricity, but if you can find a cheap or free source of used veg oil then yes, it would be cheaper than mains.

It is linked to the garage via a changeover switch, which allows the garage to be run on mains or the generator. I haven’t linked it to the house yet but this may happen in future. Currently it runs on diesel but the Lister CS can also run on alternative fuels like veg oil.
