I own an 06 sonata, it has almost 200k miles and still runs like new. Not many problems with the car besides normal wear and tear. It is bullet proof, hit a dear doing 40 and just put a small dent in the hood. I love my car.

@@niteblaster1 That’s false. I bought a 2006 Hyundai Sonata LX and I bought it with 222,000 miles. 5 months later and I’m currently at 233,000 and no check engine light still going strong. All it’s needed was new brakes and tires. This car is an absolute tank.

Jan 2022. We bought a 2006 a couple of weeks ago. We were lucky because it has only 60k miles. It looks and feel like brand new.
I couldnt believe it when i found it. The previous owner had several other cars so this one is pretty much a garage car. We will put several miles on it for sure. Loving it.

People have a strong tendency to underestimate Hyundai/Kia. These cars are on the same quality level as Honda and Toyota with much better warranty. The warranty shows how much confidence a car maker has in its product. The V6 Sonata 2006-2010 is a wolf in sheeps clothing when it pertains to performance (0 to 60mph at 6.6 sec and 1/4 mile at 15.1), top speed at 144 mph. A man in Arizona was clocked by traffic camera at 147 mph in a 2006 Hyundai V6 Sedan and the police were so surprised at the 147 mph clocking that they had the cameras checked and Hyundai Headquarters was contacted to test the car to see if it would really go that fast. Hyundai test drivers confirmed a top speed of 144 mph on level ground. The specific stretch of road where the speeder was clocked at 147 mph by the cameras was slightly down hill. Stop being Badge Dummies and start taking an objective look at these cars for their engineering, quality and performance because in reality Honda and Toyota are being outdone for less money. These cars don't look fast but they really are (Sleepers).

This year our 06 Sonata hit 100k miles..and it's the FIRST year we had
to do any repairs to it. The repairs were changing the brake light
switch and yaw rate sensor..which we did ourselves because the Hyundai
dealership wanted to charge us over $700 to do. We purchased the brake
light switch for under 8 dollars on Amazon and purchased a used yaw rate
sensor with a 6 month Assurant protection plan on ebay for under $30.
We also need to change the drivers lock switch..but again this should be
an easy and cheap repair. The car is not luxurious..and it does jump a
bit over bumps or pot holes..but it gets you where you want to go
comfortably..the seats are good..the AC and heat are wonderful..but most
of all the V6 is VERY powerful and can keep up with most V8's out there
with plenty of passing power. We are thinking of selling it to get
something bigger and comfier like a 2004-06 Lexus LS430..but we are
concerned nothing else will be as cheap and reliable to keep as our 06
Sonata. Good job on this one, Hyundai!

Just watching the videos on my first car. Unfortunately, I lost her because of a deer in Iowa, but I still miss her. Mechanically wise she only had some minor issues that were easily fixed and was a gem. The next car I had that I got from my father because I was in a pinch and desperate (his former car) was a nightmare mechanically. Watching these videos missing my old car, and hoping my soon to be new car will be fine mechanically wise (at least she will have coverage from the dealership for awhile in that sense!!)

I feel like it was best post-facelift on this generation. They ironed out all the problems of the 2006-2008 with an update in 2009. They fixed the uncomfortable front seats, updated the exterior styling, changed the dated and cheap-looking center stack. I owned both a 2006 and 2009 and I agree with you. This generation Sonata was an excellent car, it was the first car that caused people to take Hyundais seriously.

I like the generation before this one best (1999-2005) with the more Round design. I feel that many car companies started getting more ovaly in the late 90's to the early 2000's because of that 1996 ford Taurus started the ovaly trend in cars today, but a little less extreme. Chevy Chevy's Malibu for an example looked more curvy in the early 2000's, so as sonata, Toyota Prius (first generation), Nissan with it's Sentra and Altima. But at this time in the middle of 2000-2010 cars became more boxy. In '04 the Toyota Prius got a boxier look, so as the 2005 Malibu, the 2006 sonata, then the 2007 Sentra became boxy as well. Cars do follow a similar trend. I like the ones between 1980 and the early 2000's.

I owned a 2006.5 Kia Optima, which is essentially the same car as the 2006 Sonata. I loved that car. It was extremely refined. You couldn't hear or feel the 4cyl engine idling with the windows down. There was absolutely no engine vibration revving the engine. The interior was solidly built and very comfortable. Dependability was ok. Not great. Not bad. If I could turn back the hands of time I would buy one again brand-new. I liked it that much.

This was the first generation of the Sonata that actually had the chance to outlive its payments before major mechanical issues hit. Although it was a vast improvement over previous generations of the Sonata which doesn't say very much but it and it's twin cousin the Kia Optima held up pretty well but but the old saying you get what you pay for really came into play. This generation Sonata has all but disappeared from the US roadways unlike it's two biggest competitors the Camry in the Accord. Although the Camry and the Accord cost about $2,000 more each then the Sonata or the Optima you still see them all over the place. I liked this Sonata actually. I thought the exterior was handsomely styled however the 2009 facelifted version had a much better interior and dash design. The AC vents were mounted too low in the dash and the cold air seem to warm too quickly on hot days at least here in Miami.

You'll pull it toward you and cruise control light lights up on the dash, then the 3 buttons on the right of the steering wheel use to set the cruise. middle button cancels cruise, top one slows cruise down 1 or 2mph, and bottom one speeds up cruise by 1 or 2mph. @pattycarljackson Where Kia and Hyundai have similar models, they are structurally, electrically, and mechanically the same cars, like the Sonata and Optima. There is little difference other than styling. Dodge is the sporty/performance division of Chrysler Corp. Chrysler is the luxury division. At least that's how it used to be. Plymouth was the entry-level, family oriented division.

This was one of the best generations of the Hyundai sonata excluding the awkwud and drab dashboard with the air conditioning vents that blue at your arm pits Looking back it was nowhere near on the quality level as the Toyota Camry. The proof of that is that here in Miami I remember seeing tons of these But I honestly can't remember seeing one in months. Even the 2011 - 2015 Gen. Sonatas are few and far between. The original Hyundai's would break down on the way home from the dealership. My mom bought a brand new Hyundai built mitsubishi in the late 1980s and the Brand new car started overheating after only 2 weeks Until finally blowing a head gasket at only 9 months old. Hyundai fixed it at my mom traded it for new Toyota Camry which is the only Kind of car she's bought since. Hyundai's have dramatically improved but they still don't hold up like a Toyota.

@palebeachbum Because people somewhat associate more quality out of Hyundai than Kia. In my area, the local Kia dealer has the most obnoxious and persistent ads and always seem so desperate for sales. I'm not a fan of Korean cars, but I'd at least consider a Hyundai - but never a Kia. I know they're the same companies, but Kia has no rep and looks so much cheaper.
