I am happy to see you with our culture. We the great tai community are devaide in more than 7countries in Asia. So we stand together for our culture. We are not alone.
I am tai ahom from NE India.most of the Ahomes lost the tai language but I am very lucky because I am born in tai Ahom priest family and our pu thao ya thao also chanting in tai language and we still practice our tai folk religion which is called phra lung .
The word Tai or Thai means “People”. So throughout Southeast Asia, you have many groups of people called Tai or Thai. Tai dam, Tai Kaw, Tai Yai, Tai Ahom and the people who live in central Thailand like Bangkok, they are Tai Lek which means “Little Thai”. Groups of people who calls themselves Thai or Tai shares a language that derived from the Tai Kedai language family.
Ain't it a struggle? We wish to preserve all these cultures, but we can't promote them too much, else it won't be any different from a classic nationalist propaganda. If we don't give a more communual pride-based propaganda, the kids won't even try to look into them. What a struggle.
@Vuk Keon Our forefathers migrated from south east Asia in the leadership of Chao Lung su ka fa in 1228 . Since then there is no connection with tai brothers.
They are different groups but related to Thai. Thais nowadays are Theravada Buddhist mixed with Hindu and their ethnicity also mixed with Mon-Khmer , Malay and Chinese. While Tai Dam are Animism and rarely mixed with other people. They are related to Thai but not Thai.
there are too many groups of Tai tribal. But the most unique thing is their languages are too much similar to each other. For me between Laos and Thai, Laos is more similar to the rest of Tais. Thai are the version of hybrid which mixed too much with the indigeinous people Like Khmer Mon Malay.
It was more like a speacial Tai adminstration place under feudal Vietnam's rule. It was still freed from Laos rule. More like Hong Kong to China now. Belongs to the nation but allowed to have self-governing. A nation within a nation. It was recorded that although they were freely self-governed, they still had to give tributes to Vietnam in many ways like young, healthy men for Vietnamese troops, beautiful women for the King's Harem. Only after French colonism, Vietnam doesn't allow speacial administration like that anymore

As a sociologist, actually the way Tai in TH is more open to other ethnics is considered to be their strength and it's one of many major reasons why TH is a lot more prosperous than neighbors like Laos. Each ethnics in this world has differences. The openess of Tai in TH to live among other ethnics help them to draw other's strength into their society. We can see for example from their food which is globally accepted that it mixed with lots of other cultures. Not to talk about their economics. Unlike neighbor eg. Lao which their locals could not accept others eg. Hmong, and if they mixed with others like Chinese and Vietnamese, that ethnics would normally on higher social class yet don't count themselves as one of Lao people. No matter how long they will always count themselves to be their own origin. This is not the case in TH where their people count themselves as Thai no matter where their origin are. Plus they can keep their Tai culture pretty OK. No culture stay still and has not change. It's only happen with the "dead culture" as they called. Everything change and it's happen around the world unless you have no contact with others at all (in that case, be warned that you also has no knowledge/wisdom from other groups as well) The point is if that changes completely ruin the old ones. No offense but honestly to see someone mentioned the way you did (also with upvotes) really shocked me that your thought is very outdated and lack of logical in thinking. Also doubt if it cause by the regime in you land that people with diferences is problem to the society. You cannot freeze anything. In-breed -- both in biology and sociology (or even others aspect of life like management/etc.) -- only bring inferior aspect of that animals/society. Development in anything started from diferences -- either in genetic or the way people see things around them. If you see nothing except those in you own sphere, how can you develop in anything?
