PLEASE DO ANOTHER ONE!! This was so awesome, my god. Often it feels to me like there's something missing from VC videos, we see the records and hear the stories of how they were found and bought for an amazing price, which is great, but, where's the music? The wonderful thing about what you've done here is that we can hear the sounds you love, and see you listening, so closely, and reflecting your thoughts for us. This is so great. So generous, genuine, authentic and interesting. Just my all-time favourite VC video. Thank you!
Oh boy Sam you really opened up a can of worms with this video 🙂🙂🙂!! I know exactly what you mean about getting hooked on songs. Maggot Brain is usually the Funkadelic album I go to if I want to hear them. Nilsson Schmilsson is a great album - Jump Into the Fire is such a great song - I've got the album in Quad and it is wild.
Nilsson was an absolute genius who wrote a ton of hits/classics. There's a great documentary about him that's a must-see. It's titled WHO IS HARRY NILSSON (AND WHY IS EVERYBODY TALKIN' ABOUT HIM)?
Like the format. Picking out five tracks from five different artists is a great ideal. For now on I’ll be checking out your channel. X-ray Specks: it’s never been easy, has it? 🇱🇷⚡️
My band did Harry Nilsson "Coconut" once. It was a Hawaiian theme party and everyone was drunk and they had a limbo stick while we were playing. Lol. The song went on for like 15-20 minutes. Lol Good memories.
Aloha Sam, Awesome new type of video. I would love to see this type of music videos. That last band you played, I never heard of them before, thanks for sharing, Now I'll keep an eye for that record album. Sam I really enjoyed this, now I got another record to look forward to purchasing. Mahalo Ed
Thanks Ed, glad you and a lot of other people are liking this video! Yes, definitely check out X-Ray Spex. One of the greatest punk/new wave bands ever!
In my opinion, this format, for you, works. What I like about it is that you have the opportunity to share music that is important to you and then share some background about the artist and what is happening in the recording that draws you to it. I also like that you have a lot of knowledge about the music you’re playing. The video flows nicely without awkward pauses. Very nice job, Sam!

Really love this style of video Sam. Maggot Brain is stellar obviously. Admittedly I don't think I've ever seen or heard that Nick Cave 12" before so it was great to hear it here. Haha Coconut is just brilliant, always great hearing it on the credits of Reservoir Dogs too. In fact there's two other songs off that album which I associate with TV shows/films they were in - Gotta Get Up for being in Russian Doll and Without You for being in an episode of Inside No 9.
Aside from James Chance/White, in general I'm not that crazy about saxophones outside of jazz but in the music Xray Spex it's and intricate part of their fierce driven rythym. A Great fucking band!

I'm doing my 500 favorite songs list, only one song per artist. After watching your video I added The Day the world turned Day-glo. I went with a obscure Birthday Party song for my list but I may consider including a Nick Cave song too, have to make up my mind. I included Atomic Dog by George Clinton and still not have a 50's rockabilly song in my list, only a Stray Cats song called Stray Cat Strut :). I don't really like Nilsson so I don't have a Nilsson song, maybe I don't consider him "punk enough" cause yes, I a'm a poser lol

Yes, everything makes sense and your ideas are on the spot (if you don't have any problems with YT copyright). It is a format that I would like to see more. Thank you.
I think you should continue! I love hearing (no pun intended) what others are listening to, especially if deep cuts or not so “popular” songs make the list. I think it’d be cool if those commenting would share their current five. Mine, currently… Gosdin Bros. “One Hundred Years From Now” // Lucinda Williams "Fruits Of My Labor” // Donna Lewis “I Love You Always Forever (Sylk 130 Remix)” // R.E.M. “Sitting Still (Hib-Tone 45 version) // Abi Ooze “A BA”
I remember I went to see Smashing Pumpkins and the Breaders at LaLapalooza and they were horrible. The best acts that year were the P Funk All Stars and the Beastie Boys. I think it was 95.
It was '94. I saw them on that same tour too. I thought the Pumpkins didn't play very well either. My favorite performances were The Beasties and Nick Cave, who played to a nearly empty house smh.
@@charlesdrake3125 OMG I forgot to mention that. Poor Nick Cave was faced towards the Sun when it was shining right in his eyes. There were very few people at that time, most were checking out the booths. It made me very sad for him.
I'm like one minute in and I already think this is a great idea. One minute later update: You have GOT to be kidding me with this Funkadelic song! I was playing the HELL out of that one a few months ago! See? I knew this was a great idea. Final update: I actually like when you talk about the music you like. You really sell it. And you weave in all sorts of background and nice, historical tidbits. What more could a person want? I've even checked out a few things you've mentioned that I hadn't heard before.
The first DEVO lp "Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo!" Is and always will be my favorite complete album. Back in 1978 some older friends of mine turned me on to it. It would, hands down, be my go to pick for the old question "If you're stranded on a desert Island and could only have one album what would it be?".
I'm Not obsessed. I think I'm gonna get rid of my xrayspex CD and my essential lógic vinyl because I'm so tired of watching gls talking about it. By the way I'm listening to IDENTITY since 1989. My top 5 obsession 1. The Godfathers-Obsession 2. Sonic Youth- Self obsessed and sexy 3. Mar otra vez- Obstante 4. Herbie Hancock- Ostinato (suite for Angela) 5. The Only Ones- Oh no
I had first heard Downbound Train through a cover by Gin Gillette retitled Train To Satanville. It’s really strange because I thought I knew the material of Chuck Berry really well. It’s a song that I think is finally starting to gain recognition, with at least an unofficial 7” version now on the market. Please keep going with your songs you like piece, I think it’s really cool to hear someone else’s take on material you may know, but may not have thought about in the same way.
Maggot Brain and Nilson Schmilsson are extraordinary albums. Apart from the title track, the standout for me on Maggot Brain is Super Stupid. Jump Into the Fire is my favourite off Nilson Schmilsson but Coconut is a classic and Natasha Lyonne's Russian Doll made great use of Gotta Get Up.
You had me at the picture of you holding Nilsson Schmilsson! Love the whole album. Check out the video of this song on UA-cam, it’s a riot. I own multiple copies of it. Recently got into Nick Cave, tres cool. Thanks for the video, keep them coming. Shits and giggles, lol.
Yes I like this idea. I go through these 1 song obsessions myself then play the crap out of them for a few days. I have quite a lot of vinyl but I'm not huge fan of the format(I prefer cd's). Love your channel though.
I love this idea Sam. I've thought about doing it but I'm always mindful of the copyright police. I'm not monetized so I guess its a moot point but still..... This is great. I so want to do this too and have for a long time.
If you haven't seen the Nilsson doc 'Who Is Harry Nilsson (And Why Is Everybody Talkin' About Him)?' I highly recommend it. The whole thing is on UA-cam too : )
I love X Ray Spex saw them in 1978 suppoting The Clash wnen Polly shaved her head also fun fact i bought Telegram Sam around 1972 and there were 2 versions one clean and one rude were Marc would wisper "Sam sam you Bas**rd. Check out the Slits and the Raincouts debut albums.
Oh man that had to be a killer show! Haha I didn't know there was a "rude" version of Telegram Sam. Love those albums by The Slits and The Raincoats, still need to get them on vinyl
down bound train is a awesome chuck berry song i only discovered a couple years ago. I remember when i first heard down bound train it reminded me of something but i couldn't put my finger on it. After hearing it a few more times it finally hit me that down bound train sounds a lot like bound for hell by love & rockets. As a love & rockets fan a was a little disappointed that they kinda ripped off that song although it doesn't sound exactly the same the similarities are undeniable.

@@rufus_the_cat ikr I remember thinking at the time that this was the end of the push to make alternative music mainstream. Turned out to be true.
Cool video....I think you should do this once a month
Nick Cave - Dig Lazarus Dig !
You always look like a rock goddess always love your videos you amazing love you sam you have an awesome taste in music
Keep this segment!!
I'm like one minute in and I already think this is a great idea.
One minute later update:
You have GOT to be kidding me with this Funkadelic song!
I'm glad you enjoyed the video! And that Funkadelic song is such a jam!
@@ts_vinyl It really is. And, yeah--it would be great if you did more videos talking about music you love in a more general way. Just my opinion.
More of these, please
I have the Maggot Brain album on 💿 cd
Telegram Sam does that refer to the T-Rex song? Seems likely 😆😎🤘
It does!
I'm Not obsessed.
I think I'm gonna get rid of my xrayspex CD and my essential lógic vinyl because I'm so tired of watching gls talking about it. By the way I'm listening to IDENTITY since 1989.
My top 5 obsession
1. The Godfathers-Obsession
2. Sonic Youth- Self obsessed and sexy
3. Mar otra vez- Obstante
4. Herbie Hancock- Ostinato (suite for Angela)
Thanks Jesse! I'm going to have to check out Gin Gillette's version of "Downbound Train", I don't think I've heard it.
Get into "Sparks" Sam and you will have plenty more songs to get obsessed with :)..
Love Sparks, I still need to get their stuff on vinyl
Johnny Rotten was frightened by Poly....lol
Haha thanks Sandy!
Thank you, and you should do it! You can really play whatever you want if you're not worried about monetizing your videos in the future
If you haven't seen the Nilsson doc 'Who Is Harry Nilsson (And Why Is Everybody Talkin' About Him)?' I highly recommend it. The whole thing is on UA-cam too : )
Love that doc! Watching that was actually what got me into Harry Nilsson
@@ts_vinyl Oh cool! I just rewatched it a few nights ago. It's so good. So many cool and interesting characters in his orbit. He's a proper legend : )
Hooked on small faces “ me you and us 2” it will make you bounce
I love X Ray Spex saw them in 1978 suppoting The Clash wnen Polly shaved her head also fun fact i bought Telegram Sam around 1972 and there were 2 versions one clean and one rude were Marc would wisper "Sam sam you Bas**rd. Check out the Slits and the Raincouts debut albums.
Oh man that had to be a killer show! Haha I didn't know there was a "rude" version of Telegram Sam. Love those albums by The Slits and The Raincoats, still need to get them on vinyl
☕️
down bound train is a awesome chuck berry song i only discovered a couple years ago.
Interesting... I'm going to have to check out that Love & Rockets song.
nilsson he had more songs then the coconut ?? ;)
cool
Coconut reminds me of a McCartney tune with non-sensical lyrics. He had plenty of those…Lennon as well.
Everything popped, but Harry Nilsson kinda washed over me. Like the vibe, doesn't resonate yet. Funkadelic just gets better and better though.
I don't like the over exposed camera setting. Intentional or error? Either way i'm out.
