In the 60s there was a plan to tarmac over Bristol docks to convert it into a motorway and a big chunk of Totterdown was demolished to make way for a road scheme that never happened. On a happier note, the first night of Dave Allen's comeback tour and Alexei's show at the Dominion, in the mid 80s, were the only comedy gigs I went to as an undergraduate (even with a full grant money was tight). Dave's piece on giving up smoking was hilarious and Alexei's Glenn Miller impersonation left a lasting impression (no pun intended). In the late 80s I lived in a university hall of residence just up the road from the Brunswick Centre and spent many happy hours in the Renoir cinema, as it was then, watching lots of European films - Kieślowski's "Dekalog" series and "The Double Life of Veronique" making up a big chunk of it.
For reading about housing clearance in north Liverpool I recommend the Ken Rogers books "The Lost Tribe of Everton and Scottie Road" and "Lost Tribe: The People's Memories".
I demand more than a tennis ball on the end of my stick, I'm shooting for the moon. I like that the podcasts are more frequent and don't mind it's just Wilf and then the two of you chatting.
Stoke city council destroyed almost all of the bottle ovens in the 60's, 70'sm and 80's, and although they were a blight whilst at their height, they could've improved Stoke-on-Trent once redundant as pottery kilns, with some imagination. They also took away this hill of slag which as children we used to ride down on pieces of fibre glass, which left us with black faces at the end of an eventful day, and there were brambles where we picked blackberries, and pond with newts and Stickle backs, all were destroyed and replaced with "playing fields." The dullest places on earth, created by, and for, the dullest people. Also, Dave Allen's funny, watching him talk about teenage children, and growing old made me laugh a lot since I am in my adage, and having suffered parenting teenagers repeatedly. Thank you for raising these subjects, as I've haboured a serious grugde against Stoke city council since 1972 which only grows over time, and feel the need to air it every so often, plus, I hadn't fully realised it was true of most of the North until it was pointed out on your podcast, thank you! :)
Oh, wow, I can't wait for us watching withnail and with you guys. I've never done a watch along. I did a royal wedding with Tony Law by accident,on twitter which was a hoot, but, that was an accident
Hull used to have the largest council estate in Europe, Bransholme its huge. Which moved a lot of families from the Fishing Community(Hessle Rd). Over to this estate. Hence the reason there are so many Hull FC families in East Hull which is traditionally Hull KR territory. This caused quite a bit of bother back in the 70's and 80's😂😂😂. So Hull did suffer from this demolish and relocate attitude as well.
Oh, i need to learn, some Arabic. Im going back to Marrakech, i thought my school boy french, would be good when ive been before, but, its like London, everyone who lives and works there, isnt Morrocan, so, i need more Arabic than , no, thanks and if god wills it
Talal, are you doing voiceovers for Paramount films? I keep hearing what I think is your voice. Interestingly I was in Skegness recently what were you doing there!?
@ ah cool, Bangface… lol. We were at Butlins too about 3 weeks ago. Interesting place, now the domain of Richard Tice. Re Paramount (I think it was Paramount!) it was just a UA-cam ad promo for some film and the voice over sounds like you (but with a serious voice) with AI these days it’s difficult to tell. I did some work with Colin McFarlane a few years ago and he did loads of that kind of voiceover.
Withnail & I sounds great. I'm not into movies but I have by chance read the plot synopsis on wiki a few years a go. I love this podcast & cant understand why it is so niche. I only discovered it by chance because word has it that Alexei has a property in the lowlands of the south west face of the cordillera beitca about 25km to my west. I can't distil what is appealing for me but it's very satisfying to be (part of) listening to the conversations. Even though Alexei claims to be staying in the topics of comedy, the study of the politics of the left and weapons history, its really the podcast that can go anywhere which due to A's deep & broad experience of life is s6 very rich experience.

Really enjoyed listening to the two of you on the least couple of podcasts.

Lot's of happy memories of Ealing cinema! I remember the huge queues when I went to Jurassic Park many, many years ago
I just saw a post that said "we are in the bargaining stage of grieving" following the us election result.
i'm thinking of writing a screenplay about a comedian who always comes up with nutty titles/names
i reckon the series should be called The Entitler.

And UA-cam cancelled my comments for 24 hrs.

Talal, are you doing voiceovers for Paramount films? I keep hearing what I think is your voice. Interestingly I was in Skegness recently what were you doing there!?
I was performing at a rave festival in the Skegness Butlins, terrifyingly called Bangface.
What show on Paramount are you referring to?

If it was a choice between Trump, and an inert piece of carbon rod, the inert piece of carbon rod should win.
