      i can draw and design however I hav no real experience in leather but find that i long to work in leather lol. I did win a grand prize as a youngster in a leather contest state wide i made a leather top hat using NO pattern it was quite enjoyable and i was very surprised i could do it let alone win the contest but i was 12 then and 57 now lots of time has past i have no leather tools and when i look at your shop i think " my gosh he must have $60,000 in machines and tools now for me that is a great deal of money for something i may stink at. i understand just spending what i need for small projects and not investing a large sum of cash to start with and add as I go but i really would like to sell what i may end up making ... so i said all of that to ask this " how do u price what you make?"

    • @harryrogers
      @harryrogers  5 років тому

      @@mydiyjungle6075 Interesting...most of my kit is from eBay and such like so it's a small fraction. I price up jobs by setting an hourly rate and adding materials and overheads. I posted a film "How I price my craft" or something ages ago, and UA-camr 'Stock and Barrel' did a very good take on this recently. I think its best to start with a handful of tools and add any as need arises. Best regards Harry

    Harry, I think I might have an idea to help solve the clips marking the leather when you glued the edges - Why not use old fashioned flat edge metal bulldog clips? you can then lined them with leather and then maybe add a bolt & wing nut through the handle bit to adjust the pressure/opening?

    What grooving tool are you using? I've seen that on other videos and I like it better than my Tandy one. Also, do you sharpen your groover other than stropping it backwards on a strop? Thanks! BTW, a tip for you. When making an iPhone case, I cut out a piece of the cutting board you mentioned earlier the same size as the phone. The cutting board is just a bit thicker than the phone and is excellent for helping break-in the case. Sometimes, I dampen the inside with a wet dauber and then slide the cutting board in for a few minutes then work it in and out a few times. You will find it much easier to insert the phone. I save the cutting boards for repeat use as I usually make multiples of the same size.

    • @harryrogers
      @harryrogers  7 років тому

      pjculbertson55 I got it from Tandy or Ebay and it keeps pretty sharp with use...a strop is always a good idea though.

    Hi Harry, another great video!
    Quick question do you know of a chart that gives awl sizes to needle sizes or chisel size? I had no idea they came in so many sizes and could end up spending a fortune on different awls when I just need the one for when the leather is too thick for my stitching chisel. Thanks Sue

    • @harryrogers
      @harryrogers  7 років тому

      Hi Sue - Sorry I do not...maybe someone here can help. Some stitching chisels seem stronger than others and those can take a hammering through thick veg tan.....but I appreciate its all a bit hit and miss as to what quality arrives!

    • @harryrogers

      @norgmonster 6 років тому

      Thanks. I like the idea of small (3mm) stitches but is there a reason to use 4mm? Also. If i'm only going to be making straight line stitching in relatively thin / soft leather to make my ipad cases, do i rely need a Manichean or are stitching chisels sufficient?

    • @harryrogers
      @harryrogers  6 років тому

      NorgMonster for thinner leather the 3mm might be better...but small stitches take a lot of time...as does hand stitching...there is around 3 hours of hand stitching on one of my premium belts! and an iPad case is quite large.

    • @norgmonster
      @norgmonster 6 років тому +1

      OK. I will try making one with the 3mm as the leather i have is around 1mm thick. The chisels are around £10 for a set on amazon so worth a try. If it takes me to long then i may consider getting the Brother DB2 B755 MARK 3 i found on ebay for £80.

    Like that purple stitching. We just built a phone case, proved to be a deceptively difficult project. The case was just too tight. With everything that we did, we just couldn't get the phone to slide in and out easily. We had to rebuild the entire thing and moved the stitch line 1/16 of an inch back, and the case was just usably tight, almost loose. Incredibly narrow margin of error.

    When you buy leather can you order it to the right thickness or do you have to split it yourself?

      Hi you can select the thickness ...few individual people have the facility to split it.
