I enjoy watching this stuff as much as I did when I was 14. Very Cool. Skateboarding forever!!!
i was 13. i miss those days so much.
omggggg i miss being a kid. those were the days. no internet, cellphones, just the outdoors and neighbors to have fun with.
aaaand they jam the Cult.....oh yeah
Yeah bro
50 yrs young here
Grew up absolutely ripping backyard ramps in the 80’s
Remember sessions with period music. Knew then and know now how awesome it was. This was the kind of vhs that made the rounds and wore out from the c/o ‘86 pausing and rewinding. National treasure material right here.
Skateboarding was way cooler back then
Egh. I don't know what's cooler about less tricks less competition and just less people doing it? What do you like 45-50 and stuck wanting to be back in high school or some shit?
@@DCxSkateboarding relying to a 4yr old comment 😂🤡
@@marcelotapia3970 I didn't notice the comment was 4 years old. My point still stands.
Hell yes!
4 or 5 more years guys. At the top, getting in the magazines, having a board with your name on. Good cheques, kids asking for your autograph. The partying, the girls, the microcosm of fame. The way that, in really a matter of months, a year, it went from a vert dominated industry to a street skating industry, was crazy. Through no fault of their own, it was pretty brutal for many of them im sure. I was one of the thousands of kids, who knew vert was sick, but simply could relate more to street. Ramps were scarce, combined with fact that street was developing and progressing so fast, it was just exciting to be part of. Trying to keep up with the pro's when vids would drop. I was in uk, but i imagine being part of the evolution in places like california in late 80s early 90s must have been so good. Unless u were a vert guy.
Lawsuits and insurance killed ramps and parks. Don't ever trust the suits.
Grew up straight across the street from the park . Bird man was on the cover of my sisters high school yearbook pulling a judo air out of the keyhole . A few years ago a guy who works for the Tony Hawk foundation was driving on the 5 past where the park used to sit . Some dozers were digging up where the park sat . Part of the park was still intact . A few of the local including Tony showed up and skated what was left of the park . The video is on here if you search it
Lester Kasai has been mentioned as 1 of the 1st pros to make a 540 after McGill, so did Jeff Phillips, but they never put them in contest runs, except for Jeff Phillips, Clown Ramp, 1984, which is available on UA-cam.
Losi.Losi Style .style. style.styles for days !
Y born this year. 🙏🌟✨🙌❄🍊🍋🌱🍀🙏🍠l love skate
I'm all warm inside.. These were my gods when i was 9
Gator Rogokski, 5 years before he was a murderer. Me and a friend ended up moving into the apartment in Pacific Beach, San Diego, 719 Santa Rita Place where the girl he killed, Jessica had lived, after she was killed. Saw the news report and we thought, “ohh, maybe the apartment will be for rent when investigation is over” we ended up getting it. Place was empty accept for a half stick of butter in fridge, we figured it had to be hers. We made pancakes with it to honor her. Corny but true!
wtf.
@@SeyePhi LOL! Crazy stuff, man. Gator the murderer
You used to be able to see Lester airing from anywhere in the park he was so high.
Best video yet.... for me. Because this is when I started my passion for skating. This is a climax: style, power, tricks, showmanship, colors, clothing!!
Jeff Grosso dipping in with the guitar riff at 2:10 is awesome ❤️ 🔥
Loved seeing Lester fly out of the Combi at Pipe! Still have my Pipeline card ❤!
Chris Miller's sio-mo fastplant is sick!
Legends
9:26 haha there goes chris miller diving again in slo mo 11:44 i love how tony cuffs that frontside ollie
Killer film , axel says thank you
Tony says fuck you
the standard of skating in this vid would still light up any session today. the "street" skating from back then isnt really relevant any more but this still sets the bar pretty high, not many these days could touch these guys.
you gotta be on drugs if you think vert skaters these days are not miles away from this.
Love it
I would love to have a re creation of the Del Mar Pool in my back yard. Bad Ass. Perfect size , the ramps they make these days are ridiculous. I'm 40, I don't need to kill myself. lol
Just don't half pipe it when you ride! Haha
yeah i noticed that shoulder barge too. skaters just don't do that sort of thing.
Was this the contest where Corey Webster bit it hard and got hurt? I heard some punks dropped some game Jacks in the pool during one of his runs that made him go down.
Yeah, that was rough. I remember like it was yesterday.
Spinning a 540 was what the crowd wanted to see. It has been said that judges rate the skaters on crowd noise, so back in the day, no 540, no trophy. A rough time for Cab. All that grace, style, and incredible tricks but no 540. I know he did do some 540's in the early 90's.
Yeah, Phillips was the only guy who managed to beat Hawk in a final without pulling one single mctwist.
my gf says: Gen X kicked ass and still does!!
She is absolutely correct!! That whole first album 'Generation X" 1978 sums up an amazing summer of skateboarding, friends, travel and first love... back in 1987.
Randyh9 Yes she is correct. I taught her the the reality of it. I am Gen X from the OC of South Cali Punk and Proud until the end. We have a lot of the great punk bands from this area and were a large part in the birth of extreme sports like vert skating, short board surfing and snowboarding. The Punks/Punk Rockers before Punk was safe. We who stand up and behind the truth not the PC kind but not criminal just shocking and annoying to some. She is my Canadian a good head body and looks and very pro true American. I do not cheat on her just bring nectar that is interested home to share.
wooh
Wish the put the skaters names on before there runs
👍
Not one cell phone in sight
Times were better then!
They did not exist
look deeper
Did I not see Jeff Phillips and Hosoi too? Not listed
Where's Boney Hawk???
6:13 oh sh*t, Mike McGill is wearing the same helmet from Gleeming the Cube!
Like it was yesterday
where is Roskopp?
Blue monday for the final round
who was the first skater? ken park?
Yes, and Gator after him
mctwist!
First song?
Pretty sure its She Sells Sanctuary by The Cult.
The Cult - "She Sells Sanctuary"
Hey look, a skateboard contest that actually has banners from skateboard companies. What happened to that? Oh wait, truckloads of money.
That might be Hosoi in there.. There IS a rocket air pulled at 10:44 and that was his thing..
+christbait It's Caballero.
Cab's the dude in the white helmet I take it?
christbait
Most of the helmets are white. Black shirt and fuchsia shorts. Cab has scoliosis so you can always pick him out.
nkmcfrln That profile pic is the shit! I gotta go listen to that now.
Yeah ironically his condition kinda what make his style so unique. Always has his head turned in a way that makes his skateboarding style one of a kind. He is and always will be my favorite skateboarder of all time.
4:53 who is this? That rock revert fake was steezy
Allen Losi
@@thegrinch7989 thank you 🙏
is that Losi @04:58?
Yeah
Miller was not Miller yet!
Gator was badass before he was a murderer
song at 7:25??
brigggs03 This was the "generic music" used in most of the Vision contest videos. I can hear it in Chicago Blowout as well. My guess is they did it in house (or new someone who did this for free = avoid copyright.) Cool that some one pointed it out. :) I'll never forget it.
"Physical" by Olivia Newton John (1981)
Back in these days skaters learned these tricks the hard way...by slamming to the hard ground time after time until they finally had the trick down.
Now they have soft air bags to land in until they get it
They could waiting for the 30 year anniversary. I hope it does come out , id like to pay vision for what they have done for skateboarding~
I'm not trying to troll, but if you do some research on Vision and Brad Dorfman, Vision did jack s**t for skateboarding. Theres a reason that company collapsed despite having some of the best skaters on their roster.
@@MrHurv nostalgia blinds people
poor little Tony.even with a 720 in his pocket could not compete in terms of style.Gator and Miller ooze style
he did ride goofy i believe lol
