  • This is a follow-up to the catamaran shopping video I made a few months ago. Several people asked how I was able to make such good deals on these boats. It comes down to speed and decisiveness. I will outline my buying tips and tell you how you might be able to pay less for a boat.

    Having the owner teach you the boat in lieu of beating him up a little more on the price is a superb hint. I did that with my last boat and having his help with haul-out and splash was worth WAY more than the 1000 bucks I could have made him come down. Win-win deals are always better.

      Yeh experience with a vessel is something you come to value after you’ve gone in blind a time or two. A knowledgeable owner/seller can save literally days and days and thousands of dollars. Another reason to make sure it’s a win win for sure

    Good tips Nick. One thing we would add. When looking for a Cat ourselves with a buyer’s broker, we found a make and model of a boat that appealed to us, a Privilege 42. The boat had some issues that we thought should keep us from buying that particular boat. We told the broker that we would like to look for another example of that boat. He said that there were only 29 of these boats built, and very few were in the US. My wife said, “That’s ok, we don’t have to buy a boat in the US”. We had cruised for 10 years in our Amel Mango monohull and had sold it 6 months before in Australia. That night I found a Privilege 42 one owner in the BVI, 30% less, and called the broker, asked if was well represented by the photos. He said it was even better. I made an offer, sight unseen and flew there two days later. We had a survey the next week and sea trial and left with a signed contract. All went well. I would say don’t be afraid to look outside of your backyard.

      Awesome story! Glad it worked out! We met a cool couple from Portland last week on a Privilege 42. They’d rescued it and she was doing very well. Built like a tank. And they’d put big Lewmar Oceans in the overhead of the salon. Had no idea there were so few of them!

    Congratulations on your advanced communication skills. I am always amazed at how perfectly balanced your presentations are in terms of technical versus emotional-social, and, repetition - rephrasing - reiteration for clarity, your boat's name. First rate video here, thanks.

    Thanks Nick and you're right. Solving the seller's problem can go a long way but remember folks, there are also the sellers who won't necessarily fall into that category. There's
    A) the seller who's convinced that the $10k they spent X years ago on various bits & pieces are still worth the $10k
    B) the seller who through a long personal & emotional investment into the boat has overlooked the deficiencies still loves the boat
    In both of those cases, it's best to have a 3rd party (broker) explain your position that 10yr old radar & 15yr old sunbrella aren't worth diddly OR yes, she's a fine boat but having to sacrifice a chicken and make offerings to the gods for the engine to start isn't your cup a tea.
    Keep it professional, courteous and remember that as long as they hang onto the boat it's costing THEM money and Yachtworld has other options out there. Once you buy it you're committed to all its faults AND you're a lot poorer so she better be worth it....

    Really good comments. May I ad, if your making a low offer it’s always good to have a valid detailed reason . Will also show the seller that you are an educated buyer.

    • @TheOKellys
      @TheOKellys  5 років тому +8

      Yes, maybe. It's about deflating the standard cat-and-mouse game that buyers and sellers play. I maybe would not send a reason with the offer, as you don't want to get into a discussion. Your offer should be fair given the condition of the boat, not a set percentage. The boat might already be priced to sell. If the seller asks for a reason for the low offer, then maybe give him one. If too argumentative from the beginning about your offer, perhaps move on. It is such a case by case thing. Appreciate your comment.

      I am searching a sailboat since 2 years, visited 5 differents countries (France, Malta, Greece, Croatia, Spain) and for Greece, Malta 2 trips. Since the biggining, my project have moved, from a monohull to a catamaran. Not easy to decide because there is the same + and - on each shape. Even on my program, each have the same +/-... Finally I have decided to go for cat, more expensive and could be a little more stressful on rough sailing, but I love the space at sea like the Catamaran offer. I am focused on Lagoon 440 (or 470 if i can find a good price).
