The Poppy Family had many hits at home in the early 70's, If You Go Away (Terry), Good Friends, That's Where I Went Wrong, Where Evil Grows. Susan had many hits on her own I Thought of You Again, You Don't Know What Love Is, Anna Marie, I Want You To Love Me, All The Tea In China...
Brings back memories of my childhood. Susan Jacks was so beautiful and talented. Im in my sixties now and she was one of my first loves as a 12 year old kid.
This song was Canada's contribution to the psychedelic 60's. It went to No.2 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart. Written & produced by Susan's husband, Terry Jacks, he had an even bigger solo hit in Canada with "Season's in The Sun' which has a very unique dark tone for what was pop music. He had produced it as a Beach Boy's recording but when they decided not to release it he recorded it himself. 'Seasons in the Sun' would be a great song for a reaction. I'll bet Amber & Jay have NEVER heard another song like it.
Poppy Family - That's Where I Went Wrong (1970) and Good Friends? (1972). Another great one to react to is One Tin Soldier by another Canadian band - The Original Caste. This song, redone by Coven, was the theme for Billy Jack (1971), a movie you really need to see as a seriously-themed window into those times.
I was going to send them an email to say that Ronnie King (Cornelis Van Sprang) just died last week. I wanted a tribute reaction but couldn't really decide on a song because they had so many hits. A nice tribute song would be Oh My Lady or Minstrel Gypsy, although Ronnie plays a bigger part in Hit the Road Jack. For you Stampeder fns who many not remember try listening to Me and My Stone, great song the likes of which won't be heard again.
The Bells was a group that for a time included Frank Mills. Their first big hit was Fly Little White Dove Fly and my favourite song by them is He Was Me, He Was You. Their hit song that followed Stay Awhile was Lady Dawn and it is lovely.
@@festidious2644 When I was a kid, there was a song I just hated, Love Me, Love Me, Love. It really used to upset me, like no other song. Later in adulthood I was amazed to find out it was performed by Frank Mills. His other big hit Musicbox Dancer also strangely got me in the feels. Later I got to interview him, lovely fella.
Another great AM radio song from my childhood. Susan had a beautiful voice that I never grew tired of when the song was played so much. Thank you for listening to it. I haven't heard it in decades.
I haven't heard this song in decades! Oh the memories it brings back. Being a kid and having my first little transistor radio, pulling in radio stations and hearing this song, and so many others.
Wonderful song! Still suggest from the 60s The Cowsills mom and kids Song" The Rain the Park and other things" this was a flower child song Then there was the Song" Hair" This was the real Partridge family.
Good call. I’ve suggested it a few times because Amber, the flower child at heart, would absolutely relate. But you know what they say (or I say, at least), you can lead a reactor to a great song but you can’t make them listen. 😁👍🏼
Before casting actors for the Partridge Family the producers had looked at the actual family. The only one they thought they could cast was Susan. Seeing them later in life I can see why, they were annoying and dysfunctional as hell (likely for a good reason). Still they had some great songs
Yes Paul! I'd love to see Jay and Amber's reaction to The Rain, The Park... song, I absolutely love it, I feel transported back to the 60s every single time I hear it (even though I wasn't born til '67). And Hair makes me smile.
still have this great oldie in my ancient stack of 45's - it's one of a bunch that were my mom's before I got 'em in the mid 70's ... she married a "Billy"
I remember my mom had a few albums when I was little that she'd often listen to, but the unfortunate environment I/we were in made those albums leave me with unfavorable memories. One of those albums was “Poppy Seeds” by The Poppy Family. A few years before my mom passed away, I was thinking to myself... “what could I get mom for her birthday?” I was wracking my brain trying to come up with something extra, extra special. So, I thought I'd do an online search for some of those albums that she had when I was little, that had been long gone. She had given them all away several years prior. I was really excited to find a CD of The Poppy Family ~ "A Good Thing Lost: 1968-1973", which contained many of those songs she used to listen to. Mom and I met for lunch at Applebee's for her Birthday, and afterwards we went out to my car, and she opened up her present, which was that CD and we sat there and listened to that music, and I felt such a connection with her. As I said earlier, all that music had less than favorable memories do to the unfortunate living circumstances back then, but here we were getting to listen to that old music together. I very much enjoyed it and I know she did, too. Those memories, to this day feel priceless!! Our most favorites are "Winter Milk", "Tryin'", "I Was Wondering" and "Which Way You Goin', Billy?" I liked your awesome thoughts and comments on that nationwide smash hit! I hope you will do more of their music in the near future. Thank you.
I was 7yrs old, and my name at that age was Billy 8:05 and this song said Billy so often, i felt ... weird about it. Mixed feelings. Little kid. Today it brings back nothing but good memories. Love it.
Where Evil Grows is a great Poppy Family song. Also check out Terry Jacks song - Seasons in the Sun. Not too many people (at least Canadians) who don’t know it. Staple of our teens ❤
OMG. This song was how my older sister and her cheerleading friends would torturing me with this song. They would constantly sing it to me. I’ve been scarred most of my life because of this song , what young teenage boy wants a bunch of older cheerleaders constantly singing this to you , I’m a victim. 😂😂😂
Haven't heard this beautiful song in years, it seriously taps into the emotions! You can hear a similar melody to this one on the song Summer and Lightning by ELO.
The Poppy Family, we got to see them a lot on Vancouver Island, they were of course heavily played on local radio stations. They were and are great entertainers. Their music has aged well from back in the day until now. Dang I and an old person. 😎🍺☮️🇨🇦
The original Poppy Family was a four-piece folk-rock-Indian band, with Terry Jacks on rhythm guitar, Susan Jacks on lead vocals and various percussion, Craig McCaw on lead guitar and sitar, and Satwant Singh on tablas. They stood out among all the Vancouver bands of the late 60s. Their recorded sound was more pop-oriented (and very good), but their live act was unique. Susan was indeed a beautiful long-haired blonde, and remained that way her whole life. I was Facebook friends with her (along with 4,999 other people, admittedly), and I had several good discussions with her online about music, politics and other topics. She is missed by many people.
Another good Poppy Family song is " That's where I went wrong" 😊 Might I suggest another female artist from around this same era 1969-70. The song is called " For the Love of him" the artist is Bobbi Martin. She has a great voice 😊
fyi In 1977, Susan met Canadian Football League player Ted Dushinski. They married in 1980 and had a son, Thad. The family moved to Nashville, Tennessee in 1983 where she recorded the Juno-nominated song, "Another Woman's Man".[3] She was voted the best new country artist in Oklahoma for her song "Tall Dark Stranger". She became a staff songwriter for a Nashville publishing company and had several songs recorded, including a children's song on a Grammy nominated album entitled "Snuggle Up".
Susan chose her brother's name Billy to replace Buddy in this song. In 2010 Billy donated a kidney to save Susan's life. "That's Where I Went Wrong" and "Where Evil Grows" also charted well on Billboard. They consequently followed up with numerous hits in Canada. In 1983 she released "Another Woman's Man". She was voted the best new country artist in Oklahoma for her song "Tall Dark Stranger".
I remember my older siblings playing this 45 record, I was nine. It's funny how a song can bring back so many memories, I remember Mom and my siblings loving music and playing LPs and 45s♥️🙏✝️✌️😎
This 1969 song was about a guy being sent to Vietnam and his girlfriend doesn't want him to go....the B-side of the 45 single was Terry Jacks performing his version of the 1958 "Death Disc" by Jody Reynolds titled "Endless Sleep".
Two years since she left us and I still feel the loss. Their best song was "Where Evil Grows" but I'd also like to suggest "Good Friends." Many good songs and memories from this duo.
So happy when I saw the notification for this song. I was listening to it just last night. Other great Poppy Family songs: Good Friends, I Thought Of You Again, That's Where I Went Wrong. Susan had such a great voice. Sadly she passed away in April of 2022 at 74 years of age.
You were right, Amber. Susan did have long beautiful hair!! I listen to this song all the time. Loved it since I was a kid. Susan's voice is gorgeous. 💕💕
I haven't heard this one in many years... Thank you so much for reacting to this one... Such a beautiful song...good job, guys...Keep Being Awesome !!!...
Another song that I forgot. But as soon as I saw the title I could instantly sing it in my head. Hadn't heard this in 50 years. Such were the times. Every detail comes back with a simple reference. Thank you.
A few years ago I was reminded of this song and did a deeper dive into the Poppy Family. Found some cool stuff -Beyond the Clouds and That’s Where I Went Wrong are two I remember.

My uncle Larry played bass and backup vocals on Terry Jacks' previous band to this, 'The Chessmen'. They did a heavy version of 'Wild Thing' before Hendrix did! In fact, one of Jimi's guitars is from The Chessmen early guitarist who quit music to study.
Great harmonies, love Susan Jacks. Check out 'Where Evil Grows', 'Beyond The Clouds', 'Good Friends?', 'I Thought of You Again', What Can The Matter Be?', Anna Marie or 'That's Where I Went Wrong'.
There is a performance video of this song showing Susan and Terry singing that is definitely worth looking for on UA-cam. Susan was beautiful in such an ethereal way (matched only by her voice) the adds an additional element to this song that is missed when just hearing her voice.
True story Billy is Susan's brother Bill Pesklevits, The original title was Which way you going Buddy but Susan didn't like it so she said Which way you going Billy after her Brother Bill.
The late 60s, very early 70s has got to be my favorite era for music, Sooo many great songs along the same lines as this one Another Canadian group l loved was the Belles and the song Stay Awhile. I would also add the group New Colony Six from Chicago and their hits Things I' Like To Say and I Will Always Think About You.
I had forgotten this song, and the memory of it came flooding back. Thank you for that. It's now on my playlist. For no particular reason, another song popped into my head that you should hear. It's a country song, from 2006, called Brand New Girlfriend by Steve Holy. It's a good one!
She did have a very soothing voice. Susan & Terry got divorced in 1973. That's when Terry had his first solo hit "Seasons In The Sun" a #1 in 1974. Reminds me of another Canadien band The Bells. They had a song called "Stay Awhile". You have to react to Jacki and Cliff's voices on that song and tell me it doesn't give you goosebumps. Thanks. 😎
Susan had a FB page some years ago up until health problems made it unable to keep it going. @@sadee1287 That one is way up on my list as well. I always liked *Evergreen" the most. I have a couple of her albums and were hard to find!! I literally searched through a million disks before finally getting what I have. Before the internet explosion
If you want another song that really brings out Susan's beautiful voice, Try the Poppy Family's You don't know what love Is, Susan's beautiful voice really shines on that one. Her voice is so crystal clear.
I've ignored this song for many years because all I remembered from hearing it in my youth was the "which way you going Billy" verse and it didn't do anything for me. Listening to it today probably for the first time since the early 70s and as soon as the chorus kicked in, I recognized it and thought, why have I been avoiding this all these years!
Another worthy Poppy Family song is Where Evil Grows. Susan and Terry's voices blend so well together
"That's Where I Went Wrong" was another fine one.
Good Friends was my favourite
The same thing with A Good Thing Lost it really brings out both of their voices.
She had a beautiful voice. She just passed away but what a great song
Early 70s pure pop. The radio loved this song.
Actually it was recorded in 1969
"That's Where I Went Wrong" is another great song from them!
"That's Where I Went Wrong" was Her/Their other big hit from that time. Very dreamy and her lovely, innocent voice - you guys'll love it!
Where Evil Grows, Good Friends and lots of Susan and Terry's solo songs.

Need to hear Billy Don't Be a Hero by Bo Donaldson and the Heywoods
Need? Lmfao 🤦🏻♂️
The best version by far is by Paper Lace which went number one in the UK.
The best song by far IMHO by Bo Donaldson and the Heywoods was "Who Do You Think You Are" .. Ultra catchy !
Or the original Billy Don’t Be A Hero by Paper Lace.
Good song@@wayne_twentyfive
The Poppy Family - Good Friends? another great song

They’ve reacted to it. “Seasons In The Sun” is actually a Jacques Brel song which Rod McKuen adapted into English.
Shut up!!!
The Poppy Family's That's where i went Wrong is also a classic song like this. And it also brings out Susan's beautiful voice.
Poppy Family - That's Where I Went Wrong (1970) and Good Friends? (1972). Another great one to react to is One Tin Soldier by another Canadian band - The Original Caste. Great song by the Poppy Family. Another great song from the era worth a listen is the New Seekers’ I’d Like To Teach The World To Sing.

Yes. Her solo song "All The Tea In China" is another one of my favourites. Susan made a hit out of every song she sang.
@@sadee1287 That one is way up on my list as well.
I always liked *Evergreen" the most.
I have a couple of her albums and were hard to find!! I literally searched through a million disks before finally getting what I have. Before the internet explosion
Great choice
If you want another song that really brings out Susan's beautiful voice, Try the Poppy Family's You don't know what love Is, Susan's beautiful voice really shines on that one. Her voice is so crystal clear.
I've ignored this song for many years because all I remembered from hearing it in my youth was the "which way you going Billy" verse and it didn't do anything for me. Listening to it today probably for the first time since the early 70s and as soon as the chorus kicked in, I recognized it and thought, why have I been avoiding this all these years!
Canadian band Edwin Bear has a favorite song from my junior high era, “Last Song.”
