This song was Canada's contribution to the psychedelic 60's. It went to No.2 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart. Written & produced by Susan's husband, Terry Jacks, he had an even bigger solo hit in Canada with "Season's in The Sun' which has a very unique dark tone for what was pop music. He had produced it as a Beach Boy's recording but when they decided not to release it he recorded it himself. 'Seasons in the Sun' would be a great song for a reaction. I'll bet Amber & Jay have NEVER heard another song like it.

Poppy Family - That's Where I Went Wrong (1970) and Good Friends? (1972). Another great one to react to is One Tin Soldier by another Canadian band - The Original Caste. This song, redone by Coven, was the theme for Billy Jack (1971), a movie you really need to see as a seriously-themed window into those times.

I wanted a tribute reaction but couldn't really decide on a song because they had so many hits. A nice tribute song would be Oh My Lady or Minstrel Gypsy, although Ronnie plays a bigger part in Hit the Road Jack. I remember my mom had a few albums when I was little that she'd often listen to, but the unfortunate environment I/we were in made those albums leave me with unfavorable memories. One of those albums was “Poppy Seeds” by The Poppy Family.
A few years before my mom passed away, I was thinking to myself... “what could I get mom for her birthday?” I was wracking my brain trying to come up with something extra, extra special. So, I thought I'd do an online search for some of those albums that she had when I was little, that had been long gone. She had given them all away several years prior. I was really excited to find a CD of The Poppy Family ~ "A Good Thing Lost: 1968-1973", which contained many of those songs she used to listen to.
Mom and I met for lunch at Applebee's for her Birthday, and afterwards we went out to my car, and she opened up her present, which was that CD and we sat there and listened to that music, and I felt such a connection with her. As I said earlier, all that music had less than favorable memories do to the unfortunate living circumstances back then, but here we were getting to listen to that old music together. I very much enjoyed it and I know she did, too. Those memories, to this day feel priceless!! Our most favorites are "Winter Milk", "Tryin'", "I Was Wondering" and "Which Way You Goin', Billy?" I liked your awesome thoughts and comments on that nationwide smash hit! I hope you will do more of their music in the near future. Thank you.

The original Poppy Family was a four-piece folk-rock-Indian band, with Terry Jacks on rhythm guitar, Susan Jacks on lead vocals and various percussion, Craig McCaw on lead guitar and sitar, and Satwant Singh on tablas. They stood out among all the Vancouver bands of the late 60s. Their recorded sound was more pop-oriented (and very good), but their live act was unique. Susan was indeed a beautiful long-haired blonde, and remained that way her whole life. I was Facebook friends with her (along with 4,999 other people, admittedly), and I had several good discussions with her online about music, politics and other topics. She is missed by many people.

The family moved to Nashville, Tennessee in 1983 where she recorded the Juno-nominated song, "Another Woman's Man".[3] She was voted the best new country artist in Oklahoma for her song "Tall Dark Stranger". She became a staff songwriter for a Nashville publishing company and had several songs recorded, including a children's song on a Grammy nominated album entitled "Snuggle Up".

True story Billy is Susan's brother Bill Pesklevits, The original title was Which way you going Buddy but Susan didn't like it so she said Which way you going Billy after her Brother Bill.

The late 60s, very early 70s has got to be my favorite era for music, Sooo many great songs along the same lines as this one Another Canadian group l loved was the Belles and the song Stay Awhile. I would also add the group New Colony Six from Chicago and their hits Things I' Like To Say and I Will Always Think About You.

I had forgotten this song, and the memory of it came flooding back. Thank you for that. It's now on my playlist. For no particular reason, another song popped into my head that you should hear. It's a country song, from 2006, called Brand New Girlfriend by Steve Holy. It's a good one!

Always loved this song since I was very young. Her brother singing with jer had his own big hot SEASONS IN THE SUN.

She did have a very soothing voice. Susan & Terry got divorced in 1973. That's when Terry had his first solo hit "Seasons In The Sun" a #1 in 1974. Reminds me of another Canadien band The Bells. They had a song called "Stay Awhile". You have to react to Jacki and Cliff's voices on that song and tell me it doesn't give you goosebumps. Thanks. 😎

Susan had a FB page some years ago up until health problems made it unable to keep it going.
I remember her saying she wasn't crazy about only singing "sad love songs"
    "I wanted to rock"
Her personal favorite from what I remember is-
    "No Blood In Bone"
    Psychedelic Rock.
She did the backwards spoken part, it was her idea.
    Btw
The "Billy" in the song is a real person
Her brother, who later donated a kidney to save her about 20 years ago.
There's a video showing the two of them together not long after the operation.
She had a few albums after they disbanded
"Evergreen" is one of the best along with
    'Anna Marie'

Yes. Her solo song "All The Tea In China" is another one of my favourites. Susan made a hit out of every song she sang.

@@sadee1287 That one is way up on my list as well.
I always liked *Evergreen" the most.
I have a couple of her albums and were hard to find!! I literally searched through a million disks before finally getting what I have. Before the internet explosion

If you want another song that really brings out Susan's beautiful voice, Try the Poppy Family's You don't know what love Is, Susan's beautiful voice really shines on that one. Her voice is so crystal clear.

I've ignored this song for many years because all I remembered from hearing it in my youth was the "which way you going Billy" verse and it didn't do anything for me. Listening to it today probably for the first time since the early 70s and as soon as the chorus kicked in, I recognized it and thought, why have I been avoiding this all these years!
