Attitude/arabesque turns!! And how to strengthen for lifting the leg in the front. I have flexibility, but I can't lift it higher than 90* to save my life!! Thank you for your videos!! I love watching them.
I've had the same problem for ages and I am pretty sure it is ultimately a problem of core strength and core control. I'm not a teacher but I've been told (and have read) that as soon as your leg goes higher than 90°, it is 'held up' by different muscle groups (the iliopsoas) than when it is lower. If that muscle is weak, or you can't feel and activate it, there's little chance you're going to be able to hold your leg up there. The issue is, many of those talented kids we take class with figure it out on their own so teachers often don't seem to have a 'method' of helping us getting there. At least that's been my impression. If Katie can help with that, I'd be super thrilled :-D
Can you maybe talk about devoplope devant. I feel like if I have correct placement my leg can't get any higher. Thank you so much Katie, I love you and all of your videos!
This is a great video! My teacher always tell us that out attitude position is the same a coupe derrière, which helps you engage your back and hold it. Hope you have a great day!
so many people think ballet, or even any dance style its all about your body or flexibility, but it’s actually all about your strength, it may seem easy, but lifting your leg up without the help of your arms is extremely hard, and remember everyone and anyone can dance! 💋💋
THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO! I've been struggling with attitude derrieres so much that my teacher has to tell me to square up and all sorts of things every time but I didn't know how to actually square my shoulders. You're a life saver.
super helpful, especially with the different training versions. I have a teacher who was trained in the russian style and one who is more traditional. this definately cleared up alot of the corrections i am given about attitudes
Thank you so much for this video Katie, I always improve after watching you! I was wondering if you could do a video about winging the foot, I have a lot trouble with it. Thanks so much!
Could you do a video on single foot balance? I've looked everywhere for basic technique and balance tips for coupe, retieree, and all that, and nothing is helping me. The counter balance advice helped in your other video, but I am still falling out of releve as soon as one foot lifts. You're awesome Kathryn!!
Hi Katie, this has helped me so much to understand the different styles. Could you please do a video explaining how to properly place and move your lega in a barre frappés, they're really hard for me, especially when my teacher asks me to do them quickly like in doubles.
Perfect video for me today because I'm pas de deux today we did the attitude promenade!! This helped me so much as I was a little off balance!!😊❤️❤️ Thanks!!
thank you for this video, it really helped, and brought back childhood memories of tea cups on the foot!! I would love it if you could do videos on: Attitude/arabesque turns, pirouettes from 5th and how to be quicker and neater in batterie exercises xx
My teacher once said the way to find your attitude is easy: do a coupé and lift your leg. That's how open/closed it should be. She is from a more RAD background, but it is a very useful tip.
Thank you for these amazing videos Kathryn! I'm not sure if this would be a popular request, but I love watching character dance. Could you do a class or a tutorial of some of the key steps? There are basically no places that teach it for adults.
Hello Katie!!! I have natural leg flexibility, so I struggle a lot when I'm doing grand battement or high developpé with my hip, they are never squared as much as I try, any tips? Also when I do arabesque I also have a hard time getting my leg behind my shoulder without completely crossing over the leg. Also thank you very much for the video you've helped tremendously with my technique and my artistry. 💗
Thank you for that Video Katie. I have been struggeling with my attitude for years, especially with Balance. All your technique Videos are so helpfull. I'd love if you would do a Video for por de bras because my arms are always a problem for me. Ly :*
Thankyou so much for your helpful videos Katy. I was wondering if you have any tips for raising the attitude leg so that it is directly behind the shoulder. As I am looking forward in attitude I can't feel whether my raised thigh is going out to the side too much.
Speaking of Vaganova vs Balanchine... I am am older dancer taking adult classes. I recently moved and for the first time, I live somewhere that doesn't have a Russian studio available. Balanchine style looks good on other folks, but it just feels wrong on my body. Even the way combinations are put together is massively awkward for me. The teacher told me that there was no problem with coming from a different style, but her corrections are very much focused on Balanchine aesthetics. I am not an aspiring professional, so do I have the right to ignore the Balanchine-specific corrections? Should I talk with the teacher about this?
Tikovka I had the same problem. I learned the vaganova technique and when I went to a studio that had more of a balanchine style I had to leave because I thought that it was horrible haha
Personally I think a chat with the teacher would be okay, but keep in mind that even if you have been trained in a different style in the past, it's always correct class etiquette to listen to what your instructor is telling you. If you're taking a class in an unfamiliar style use it as an opportunity to learn. Teacher's are there to help you, not to be ignored.
I love these videos. Would you also be able to include tips for beginners? For example, how an attitude should look for someone who doesn't have professional level turnout or leg height? I am assuming it would be held lower.
AriRHen yes,you would go as close to the position as your body safely allows, so if that isnt that high, dont worry about. With time and practice you will notice that you can bring the leg higher or hold it with more turnout. Same with arabesque and other things, just go as high as your body allows with correct positioning, and if you are struggling slightly then practice at home! Hope this helps
Im watching this because our dance teacher told us to do a dance with thirty different moves she listed on a piece of paper this is one of the moves (over winter break)
Im not a dancer but my friend is and we have to make a dance up to a song and since she’s taught me ballet and jazz she picked me to do the attitude with her
Dear Kathryn, knowing that the pelvis must be kept square in an arabesque, how much can one,,steal,,or,,cheat,,on the hips,to make it look nice and presentable? I look forward to your suggestion!
Could you do dancer opinions a la tsiskaridze/melmoth on tumblr? It'd be really cool to hear your opinions of other dancers from a professional's point of view. Also, love how you explain these slight differences in style for someone with no actual dancing background :)
I'm forever looking for tips on balance in general. I have great flexibility and a lot of core strength, but I have a lot of trouble finding my balance. Are there common mistakes that I should be watching for? I'm coming back to dance after a long hiatus and a lot of injuries, so I'm relearning the body, and balance is really hard. Aside from strengthening the foot/ankle, what are the other balance pitfalls?
Alex Mirov Make sure from the top of your head to your foot, everything is in proper alignment. Butt in, use your upper back muscles, stomach in and up, staighten your supporting leg as much as you can, and practice counting how long you can balance for so you can track your progress instead of just being like "oh I balanced for a long time woo" or "that wasnt good."
Yes, it would. Usually the rule on attitude from english technique is that the angle of your closeness on an attitude should be the same closeness you have on your working leg when you're doing a coud de pie on a straight support leg. So it seemed like it was the traditional one that Kathryn showed. I hope this was helpful.
Hello Katie! I really hope that you see this comment: did you ever hear of the page wish.com? u can literally get everything there, the point is they also have A LOT of ballet stuff and it's all so cheap, I wish you would make some kind of testing video where you review stuff from there - I'm really scared the quality is shit - also it would just be a funny video I mean they have pointe shoes for 6$ like what the hell
BalletByNight really? actually my friend ordered a few things from there (non-ballet stuff, sunglasses and a shirt) and was quite happy with it and it actually was just a few dollars but I never ordered something myself so I can't really tell
hello, i liked your video! but i have one thing... i have lived in Russia and studied the Vaganova style my whole life, but my teachers have always told me to keep my back up and not forward... i just wanted to point this out. sorry i dont want to sound mean!!!:)
When I do a turn across the floor in attitude, I slide into a releve rather than popping on to releve. Is anyone able to tell me if there is a term for that?
Here is a post which illustrates what I mean really well: aballeteducation.com/2016/03/28/notes-on-the-styles-of-attitude-derriere/ I am sure it varies, and of course it looks different on everyone's bodies. ( I do not a have the body of a russian dancer.)
BrokenPointeShoes now looking back on the image, i think the reason everyone thinks the Vaganova one is more extended is because most russian dancers nowadays have hypermobile backs, so they look like the hypermobile one.
Attitude/arabesque turns!!
And how to strengthen for lifting the leg in the front. I have flexibility, but I can't lift it higher than 90* to save my life!! Thank you for your videos!! I love watching them.
I think she has a video on attitude turns! ^^
Me too my extensions are absolute garbage 😩 the struggle is real 😂😂
I've had the same problem for ages and I am pretty sure it is ultimately a problem of core strength and core control.

Core workouts like Pilates help.
thank you so much for your tips, they make me feel a lot more confident!!
Hope you have a great day!
i haven't danced in years but you inspire me with your videos. Thank you for your passion
This video was super helpful, I have always struggled with attitude so thank you for this. Could you do a video for ronde de jambe en l'air?
I am in awe of how easy you make this look.
The shoulder thing just changed my life tysm!! :)
You make it look so easy and elegant
Yes! I love technique tuesday, it's always so helpfulxx
You are very generous in your knowledge
so many people think ballet, or even any dance style its all about your body or flexibility, but it’s actually all about your strength, it may seem easy, but lifting your leg up without the help of your arms is extremely hard, and remember everyone and anyone can dance! 💋💋
THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO!

This helped so much, thank you!!! ❤️
miss kathryn, i really hope you do a video on the coupe jete leap and also the firebird. they are both quite confusing.
super helpful, especially with the different training versions.
Looking fit Katie! Great video
This is just what I needed! Thank you for all of your great tips!
Me too 😊

The counter balance advice helped in your other video, but I am still falling out of releve as soon as one foot lifts. You're awesome Kathryn!!
thanks so much for this, from your personal experience and *very* informative.
I really like the food videos! Can you do more of those? Love your videos❤️
So well explained, thank you Kathryn 😊 I’ve recently started ballet and I’m really enjoying it!
I would love some tips on correct placement. I am struggling with it, and I notice as the exercises get harder, I can not keep my torso square.
Can you do a video on darning pointe shoes? Thank you!💕💕💕💕
I lost it when you showed the vaganova attitude! 🙈 Guilty!! I'm studying Cecchetti now.
Thank you!!!
Do you have any tips for practising spotting and balancing during turns in general? :)
I can't do promenades. Can you do a video focusing on promenades? In pase, attitude, and arabesque?
Seconded!
I will write that down! Thank you!
Alexa DeSanctis "Heel! Heel! Heel!" is all I can hear when I think of promenades :-D
thank you for this video, it really helped, and brought back childhood memories of tea cups on the foot!!
I would love it if you could do videos on: Attitude/arabesque turns, pirouettes from 5th and how to be quicker and neater in batterie exercises xx
Helped me so much thank you❤️❤️❤️❤️💛💛💛💛💚💚💚💚💙💙💙💙💜💜💜💜
Thank you this was very helpful
Oh and the colour of your leotard is beautiful. Looks Very good on you ^^

These videos are soo helpful Kathryn. Thank you so much. Could you do a chassis steps please ? Xx
My teacher once said the way to find your attitude is easy: do a coupé and lift your leg. That's how open/closed it should be. She is from a more RAD background, but it is a very useful tip.

I haven't taken ballet in forever but I remember that teacup on your foot!

Wish you could be my teacher!!!! You're sooo amazing!!! 😘😘👏👏
This video was so helpful! But can you please do a video about point hops? I'm struggling with them.
I'm not sure if you have seen it already, but she did a video called "Improving Hops on Pointe"
AriRHen oh really? Thanks
Graciaaas
No entendí mucho de lo que dijiste porque no hablo ingles del todo bien pero lo hiciste entendible para mi ❤
Dear Kathryn, knowing that the pelvis must be kept square in an arabesque, how much can one,,steal,,or,,cheat,,on the hips,to make it look nice and presentable? I look forward to your suggestion!

I would love to see you do a video like this with a partner, to share some helpful tips for working together in pas de deux!
Hii, I'm struggling with the arabesque ponche from diana variation, I'm very flexible but I can't do that ponche on pointe :c
How do you deal with big and nasty blisters?
I'm forever looking for tips on balance in general. I have great flexibility and a lot of core strength, but I have a lot of trouble finding my balance. Entendi nada, mas, compreendi tudo.

this looks like scam on the first sight this is no ad omg
Yes, everything says $1 or $2 is actually $25+ plus $10 shipping. I don't know how they can blatantly advertise such a scam!
BalletByNight really? actually my friend ordered a few things from there (non-ballet stuff, sunglasses and a shirt) and was quite happy with it and it actually was just a few dollars but I never ordered something myself so I can't really tell
attitude turn
hello, i liked your video! but i have one thing... i have lived in Russia and studied the Vaganova style my whole life, but my teachers have always told me to keep my back up and not forward... i just wanted to point this out. sorry i dont want to sound mean!!!:)
When I do a turn across the floor in attitude, I slide into a releve rather than popping on to releve. Is anyone able to tell me if there is a term for that?
Amanda Stevens Is it like a pique turn? I'm pretty sure that's just a pique back attitude turn.
Alesicone turns!!! Please!!!
Ich First Video in the new studio? :)
No she's had quite a few already actually. Like the advanced ballet class... I think
hmmmm, in my experience the classic attitude is used in Vaganova and the lengthened/more tipped one is more of a RAD thing?
BrokenPointeShoes really? I do vaganova and the vaganova one she showed looks like what we do. interesting
