    Attitude/arabesque turns!!
    And how to strengthen for lifting the leg in the front. I have flexibility, but I can't lift it higher than 90* to save my life!! Thank you for your videos!! I love watching them.

      I've had the same problem for ages and I am pretty sure it is ultimately a problem of core strength and core control.
      I'm not a teacher but I've been told (and have read) that as soon as your leg goes higher than 90°, it is 'held up' by different muscle groups (the iliopsoas) than when it is lower. If that muscle is weak, or you can't feel and activate it, there's little chance you're going to be able to hold your leg up there. The issue is, many of those talented kids we take class with figure it out on their own so teachers often don't seem to have a 'method' of helping us getting there. At least that's been my impression. If Katie can help with that, I'd be super thrilled :-D

    so many people think ballet, or even any dance style its all about your body or flexibility, but it’s actually all about your strength, it may seem easy, but lifting your leg up without the help of your arms is extremely hard, and remember everyone and anyone can dance! 💋💋

    Could you do a video on single foot balance? I've looked everywhere for basic technique and balance tips for coupe, retieree, and all that, and nothing is helping me. The counter balance advice helped in your other video, but I am still falling out of releve as soon as one foot lifts. You're awesome Kathryn!!

    Speaking of Vaganova vs Balanchine... I am am older dancer taking adult classes. I recently moved and for the first time, I live somewhere that doesn't have a Russian studio available. Balanchine style looks good on other folks, but it just feels wrong on my body. Even the way combinations are put together is massively awkward for me. The teacher told me that there was no problem with coming from a different style, but her corrections are very much focused on Balanchine aesthetics. I am not an aspiring professional, so do I have the right to ignore the Balanchine-specific corrections? Should I talk with the teacher about this?

    • @Milenaiguess
      @Milenaiguess 7 років тому

      Tikovka I had the same problem. I learned the vaganova technique and when I went to a studio that had more of a balanchine style I had to leave because I thought that it was horrible haha

    • @carlyheartsdance
      @carlyheartsdance 7 років тому +3

      Personally I think a chat with the teacher would be okay, but keep in mind that even if you have been trained in a different style in the past, it's always correct class etiquette to listen to what your instructor is telling you. If you're taking a class in an unfamiliar style use it as an opportunity to learn. Teacher's are there to help you, not to be ignored.

    I love these videos. Would you also be able to include tips for beginners? For example, how an attitude should look for someone who doesn't have professional level turnout or leg height? I am assuming it would be held lower.

    • @emilypersinger1762
      @emilypersinger1762 7 років тому +3

      AriRHen turn out is the same maybe improved over time and leg height does not change

    • @BudgetingwithEmilia
      @BudgetingwithEmilia 7 років тому

      AriRHen yes,you would go as close to the position as your body safely allows, so if that isnt that high, dont worry about. With time and practice you will notice that you can bring the leg higher or hold it with more turnout. Same with arabesque and other things, just go as high as your body allows with correct positioning,and if you are struggling slightly then practice at home! Hope this helps

    I'm forever looking for tips on balance in general. I have great flexibility and a lot of core strength, but I have a lot of trouble finding my balance. Are there common mistakes that I should be watching for? I'm coming back to dance after a long hiatus and a lot of injuries, so I'm relearning the body, and balance is really hard. Aside from strengthening the foot/ankle, what are the other balance pitfalls?

    • @alinaj1707
      @alinaj1707 6 років тому

      Alex Mirov Make sure from the top of your head to your foot, everything is in proper alignment. Butt in, use your upper back muscles, stomach in and up, staighten your supporting leg as much as you can, and practice counting how long you can balance for so you can track your progress instead of just being like "oh I balanced for a long time woo" or "that wasnt good."

    Would RAD fall into the classical/traditional that you mention Kathryn? Thanks xx

    • @JoanaTomlinso
      @JoanaTomlinso 7 років тому

      Yes, it would. Usually the rule on attitude from english technique is that the angle of your closeness on an attitude should be the same closeness you have on your working leg when you're doing a coud de pie on a straight support leg. So it seemed like it was the traditional one that Kathryn showed. I hope this was helpful.

      Here is a post which illustrates what I mean really well: aballeteducation.com/2016/03/28/notes-on-the-styles-of-attitude-derriere/ I am sure it varies, and of course it looks different on everyone's bodies. ( I do not a have the body of a russian dancer.)

    • @alinaj1707
      @alinaj1707 6 років тому

      BrokenPointeShoes now looking back on the image, i think the reason everyone thinks the Vaganova one is more extended is because most russian dancers nowadays have hypermobile backs, so they look like the hypermobile one.
