- 1997 Russia women team didn’t lose even a match either in all tournaments or friendly games. World Grand Prix had 12 matches in total including preliminary and final round. Russia squad won all matches including beat down Cuban twice.
Russian #8 Evguenia Artamonova (22yo, 1.9m) was the super star in 1997. Best scorer, best attacker, MVP were all her entitlement within that year. This match was the final round of gold medal match held in Kobe, during the time Princess Diana passed away in the car accident.
Post-Match Commentary :
In this match, Russia relied on the two wing spikers - #8 Artamonova and #6 Godina (20yo, 1.9m) to score. Cuba instead divided the scores by 5 spikers on the court. It was really a 50:50 game and both teams were in a very good shape. Their spike, blocking, receive were the highest level in the 90s.
In the 1st set, Russians stayed focus and got perfect receive. Besides #8 and #6, #9 Tishchenko (22yo, 1.86m) got high attack success rate. Besides, #3 Mireya Luis (30yo, 1.75m) attacks kept defence or blocked by Russians. But things started to change in set 2. Cuba attacks became more diversified and they scored by defenced the hammer attack by Artamonova. The luck of God stand in Cuba side. Even so, Russians didn’t give up as they did lag behind Cuba 0:2 set in preliminary round and turnover the result. By more mistakes made by Cuba in 4th set, the game turn to tie 2:2.
I admired #8 Artamonova a lot by that time, she was the key in the whole team and the old scoring volleyball system in 90s made she spiked 80-100 balls in a 5-set match. Convert to nowadays scoring system, it made her scored 50-60 points in a match.
In this 5th set, Russia led the score 12-7. There was 90% chance Russia can win this match. But #10 Regla Torres (22yo, 1.91m) chased the score back to 12-11. Both teams were under huge pressure and score was 13-13. But the most dramatic scene happened in the last two points. The luck to the Russian and errors caused by Cuban made Russia beat down the 5 consecutive champion Cuba by that time the first time. I would say there's no winner or loser given both team performance.

Principalmente el #2 Costa estaba de regreso y poner 4_2 era la mejor opción para el equipo. El Gran Premio Mundial de 1998 utilizó mucho 5-1 pero perdió mucho

@@flamesniper126 dont bash karpol becoz of him russia always had a finish podium though it may not be gold but still received a good finish unlike today russian coach were not like karpol but no awards Id rather have that kind of coach who thinks opportunity needs to be taken seriously and look at the repercussion in return
