I've only been gardening for a few of years, so I'm still in the learning stages. Each year I learn a little more and experiment with a different plant. Last year I decided to plant some herbs in a 3' planting container. Lemon balm was among the selection of herbs. I live in the North East, so my winters are cold, and the herbs all died off. Well, all but the lemon balm. It was dry looking, but I could tell it was bouncing back in the Spring. Only then did I realize that lemon balm was a perennial. I cleared out the remains of the old herbs and allowed the lemon balm to grow freely in the whole container. They filled in the container nicely. The tea that comes from them is great!

I'm in the NE too. I just did lemon balm last year, by accident when it piggybacked with some bulbs that were gifted to me. I'm happy to find out that it's perennial so I won't disturb the soil. I found that oregano and sage winter over just fine here as long as the soil is well drained. Good luck with your herbs🍀

I recently purchased a lemon balm plant from a nursery and I have it in a well draining pot but it’s dying and I’m not sure if it’s been too much water or it’s too much heat. I live in central Texas and the days are over 100° now How can I save my plant?
@@jilliansen1 I'm not sure. I didn't have issues with mine, but I'm in the north east, so maybe too much heat as you suggested? In fact, my plants over wintered, which I didn't expect, and popped back up the following year.
Apparently banana is great as a rooting agent for cuttings and cinnamon is helpful when planting the seeds! 😊
Is the cinnamon just for controlling mold? You can also just have proper air ventilation by running a fan and that should do it.

You said it! Pesto. I've made a mint chilli pesto last week. Awesome stuff. Washed the mint leaves, add green chillies, veg oil, bit of garlic, blended the whole lot, voilà. Really nice with pasta 😻🍜

Glad you mentioned the pesto - Italian cook Genaro Contaldo always says you can make a pesto with any leaf & any nut or seed in (preferably) olive oil, but logically you could use another oil too. I'm so looking forward to having some solid growth of different living mulch under my citrus trees by the time summer comes. It'll help them survive the Adelaide weather better.
I use lemon balm as I use real lemon with fish or as lemon flavor for pie filling my favorite ways

good morning beautiful spirit lady. I too LOVE lemon balm. it blasts fever blisters into oblivion. i made an oil with it and it cools down, feels almost like the icey part of the icey hot. It has helped me through anxiety attacks. i LOVE it. also, thanks for your vids. I am trying to do my own permaculture garden. given today's circumstances, it is difficult to gather supplies, but i am going for it any way using stuff we have around. thanks so much for the inspiration you give. thanks for normalizing my wild desire to plant seed babies everywhere. clap! clap! yippity skippity!!

In Pennsylvania USA my lemon balm self sows and ends up being aggressive. I love pesto though and never knew I could use lemon balm in. Could be so much easier than tender basil. Love 5his idea! Thank you so much!
If you want to reduce it's self-seeding trim back after flowering before seeding.
Also mow it! Great smell!

@@MoragGambleOurPermacultureLife have tried mowing. Sometimes works and sometimes spreads it. I think I'll just embrace it! Lol. Seriously though, I have a homeopathic doctor friend and am going to donate surplus to him this year.
I planted my herb garden three summers back and the lemon balm I got “just to try” has become the hardiest, lushest plant in my garden. I couldn’t get rid of it if I wanted too 😂 plus, The bees really do love it ❤

We have about 4 variants of Melisse officinalis in our garden. The nicest one, I think, is Melisse officinalis 'Mandarina' which smells stronger than the others and has an orangy flavor to it. But the Mexican one we have (forgot the proper Latin name) is also great. It's almost pepper radish like tasting. Highly recommended!

I have to disagree that lemon balm doesn't spread like mint. At least here in the Pacific Northwest (Southern Oregon - zone 8) it self seeds and is all over the place. I used to regularly pull or dig it out, while also drying some for tea and using it for both medicine and cooking. However, after finding you and your many informative and inspiring videos Morag, I am taking a permaculture view of this plant, and unless it settles itself into a bed that I had other plans for, I am letting it be (for the bees). I'm doing the same with borage, which flowers much earlier in the season. The bees like my backyard garden :-).
A lady that has garden in your area cuts hers to the ground a couple of times a year and keeps it from self seeding and she says it’s well behaved that way ❤
In the American northeast it’s also borderline “out of control”, self seeding and spreading wildly…
I allow it because it outcompetes more unpleasant weeds, AND because it makes lovely, fragrant greenery for my garden cut flower arrangements… Best one-plant gift I ever got.
Heck yeah, that just inspired me to plant a big patch of this in an old sandbox I'll amend. It was going to be fallow this year. The bees will love it and I need some more pollinators!
In Upstate NY it will soon block out the sun! :) Seriously, if you can't grow lemon balm you have no thumbs let alone green ones. It has runners and seeds.
Maine here. Totally invasive. And I never planted it. Bought one small herb pot years ago, and now I can’t control it.
Thanks for the info. I love Lemon Balm, I live in the US GA and I eat this everyday and crave it raw. It will grow best in spring to the fall. If I get more rain. I wonder how to grow it inside the house. I have a stressful life and it seems very calming.

I eat it picked fresh. Used to make the tea with chamomile, but I prefer the effects when eaten fresh.

I absolutely love lemon balm tea especially as a cold infusion but where I am it takes over and the roots are tough to get out. If I miss a year of not getting them cut down before it seeds, I am I trouble!

hello Morag...from the Clarence Valley .... just wondering if my lemon balm is a different variety .. it spreads everywhere in my vegetable garden .. i bought it to help with insects around the vegies.. but in the last few months.. it has rampanged :)... and now having to move it else where......but thank you for the lovely information.. love these videos of you talking about herbs and vegies... thank you again

I was also puzzled at how it doesn't take over like mint. Maybe a different type of Lemon Balm? In NE it crowds out everything else so you don't exactly end up with the diversity factor.

will lemon balm cross with mint. i have 12 different mint varieties. i also have lemon balm. i still haven't seen my lemon mint flower, so i cant see the diff lol.
i keep at least 20 yards between the diff flavors of mint but do i need to do the same with the lemon balm? i let them all spread out.

Best to do an internet search for this and you will see pictures for both - then you can tell which one you have.

Dear Morag. Need some advice here. I bought 5 leamon blams plants in approx 20 cm in height. I live in Thailand and at this moment we have rain season after got them I relocated them in bigger pots the weather here is full sun for some hours but it seems no matter what I do they are hanging. If they stand in the shadows the temp is around 32. But if I place them in the sun they also look like they are dying what to do? Not possible for me to place them inside
They do indeed struggle with heat. Even here in the subtropics they prefer to be in a shady understory place, otherwise they wilt too

My lemon balm spreads like crazy. It’s even escaped the large shrub bed and has come up in force through the gravel path next to the bed. Zone 7a

I’m sitting here grinning because I planted one small lemon balm plant years ago and it has spread over an area of 10’ x 20’! In fact it is the dominant plant in that sunny spot! No need to help it propagate!
And yes, the bees adore it when it flowers & the baby bunnies use it for cover. I even have a barred owl who perched in an ironwood tree beside it, watching for rodents & lizards.

I’m carefully wintering over my lemon balm plant inside along with mint and some other herbs. Loving the tea. I’m in snowy Wisconsin.
I’m also in Wisconsin (Green Bay Area), and my lemon balm self seeds and overwinters easily. I don’t do anything special to it and it thrives and spreads easily. Great plant.
Interesting; I’m in southern Minnesota and the lemon balm and mint come back year after year here. 😉
In michigan. The lemon balm stump we have in the garden almost 10 years now, it lasts over very cold 2F winters for sure. Every year the bush is huge by July 1st, and spreading around the entire garden edge now, plus other parts of the yard (we are guessing from bugs relocating the plants offspring far away from the veggie garden somehow) Very invasive for sure and hardy plant that helps with bug and IPM sprays big time for pests. Also good for animal to keep the flies away from horse and dog

Lemon balm makes your home smell lovely when used for dusting your furniture. So many uses for this herb.

Great informative video Morag. I bought a lemon balm plant for 50 cents and love the tea. Looking forward to taking some cuttings and spreading it around the garden to bring in bees, and perhaps having a bee sanctuary.

It only crowded out the less hardy mints in my yard, but I agree, it could be invasive. It is on all the walkways in my garden. It surprised me how pleasant the tea tasted because it truly smells like citronella!
2 hours north of you, lemon balm stump we have lasted so far almost 10 years, and the entire bush has spread around my entire yard now.
We use the leaves to make a tea, and then use that tea in spray as a bug spray for humans and plants both, to keep pests off the plants. A lot of bugs cannot stand lemon terpene oils.
i have lemon balm and lemon mint... i cant tell the difference without the flowers. looks like catnip to me ;)

I've got some lemon balm seeds in a little cup right now under a grow light. The little plants smell so good. It's fall now so I think I will keep the plant inside until next spring. If I had more windows I'd just keep it in my apartment
