- Tired of spending money on bagged salad only to toss half of it away because it goes bad so fast? Watch this to learn how to chop your own romaine lettuce. It lasts longer and is cheaper than the pre-washed, chopped and bagged version.

After drinking three cups of coffee and watching this video, I can confidently say that I'm really pumped about knowing how to properly cut a head of romaine.
May want to wait to use a knife till after the caffeine wears off 😉

Same. It’s the ADHD.
The only “proper” way is to have fun and be yourself
i always relied on my parents prepping my food , now that Im alone , i rely on these kinds of videos. thankyou .
Beauty of life my friend
Same bro
They should send directions in the package for folks like you....
I didn't think about NOT detaching leaves from stem. Useful tip! Thanks, Nate :)
I didn’t know that trick about cutting the spines. I’ll try that today. One tip I’d like to share that makes my lettuce stay fresh longer is leaving a damp paper towel on top of it in the storage container while it’s in the fridge. I find that it does not get brown as fast or that weird pink stuff on the spines.
It’s always the simple stuff that I am ashamed to ask on how you do them. Videos like this are a great help even if my issue is just being embarrassed
It's 2017, it's a Saturday and I'm here watching a video on how to chop lettuce up. What is my life at all lmaooooo
Its 2018 its a Wednesday and im sitting here doing the same thing...help me
The internet is empowering. I also learnt how to tie a rope for a swing on a tree! I didn't have to ask anybody! Pro's and con's. Pro's and con's. It ain't a perfect world. (Said in a slightly sarcastic Britsh way)
Damn Jack 2017... that was like 2 years ago. What you doing now.
2019 here lol doing the same haha
it’s 2020, a sunday during quarantine, trying to make a chipotle bowl at home and learning how to cut lettuce properly
never thought to do it this way, so helpful, thank you!!!
Methinks this is the best Romaine prep video
This segment was really helpful. Thank you so very much.
Break the leaves apart and wash with salt and vinegar water.
You just cut up the snail inside the head. I get a case each week and make feed 80 people. Have found slugs in there
Thanks for taking the time. Great, simple video!
Nathan, you're saving my butt today. Thanks
Thanks for this video, Nathan!
Thanks Dude! This really helped me out on making the salad. It's weird that I know how to cut everything that supposed to be in a salad except the lettuce... I'm such a dummy.
Glad I could help.
Thanks, I always wind up with it kind of messy looking so this helps with presentation. I keep my greens in those Green Bags that you can buy in the produce section or at a health food co op. They really do keep the greens and produce longer. I usually put a paper towel in with them and change it every couple of days when I make a salad.

I've always been a huge fan of romaine lettuce.
Considering the recent romaine scare, I found that actually washing it first decreases all chances of getting sick.
Osity I love that you have the same comment on each romaine vid I’ve watched... this was the 5th.
&& I completely Concur w your statement!
@@TheKMGOLD
I'm rather adamant about it thus my determination.
I even have a video about it.
Osity I’m going to have find yours!
Thanks for taking off a good 4 minutes from my salad prep time.
Thanks I like this easy tip to prep your salad.
Thanks! This is so helpful.
Lots of videos saying to put one paper towel at the bottom of your rubbermaid container, then put chopped salad in, and one more paper towel at the top. Helps keep the moisture out.
thanks!super helpful
Very helpful video, thanks!!
thank you!
all I can say is amazing video!!
Thank very very much. It was my first time every and I was a bit anxious.
Thank you so much!! :) I was wondering how to most efficiently get a bunch of little pieces. Haha! :)
Very helpful! Thanks!

I found a snail in my Romain lettuce. Cutting this way would cut up snail into salad
Now I separate leaves to wash them. This is 5 heads each week for large CR dinner
Escargot is a delicacy! You can still inspect the lettuce before or after scoring the lettuce, prior to doing the last cuts.
Simple and to the point thabks
Thanks*
You are a legend thank you boss 🙌
Great, thank you
Thanks A Lot!
thanks nate good vid
Ah thanks for this
Thank you :)
Good shit Nathan
thank you
I have red leaf lettuce. I'll ve cutting just like this. Thanks handsome.
Do you eat the head part or throw away? I am asking about the last hard white part where all the spines originate from?. Please answer? Thanks!
Thanks dude! I'm about to make some right now for my salad! I'll let you know how it ends up! :)
i dont feel so good
Yo, the romaine lettuce has a bacteria that can kill you right now, go to the doctor.
good video! Thanks for the video.
Thanks
What a great idea! Is this how the pros do it?
شكرا 👍
Oddly satisfying
I once bought a bag of 6 organic Romaine lettuce hearts from Whole Foods Market. I just tore apart each leaf, washed every single leaf, and set the leaves aside. The white part was the best part, because that's where all the water was. The green leafy part didn't seem to have much water. If I were you, I would keep the white part and eat it. If you don't eat it, then feed it to your pet rabbit or something, because the white part, in my opinion, is the best part.
I was just lectured at work by some 18 yr old whiz kid about how the white part should be discarded because it looks bad. glad to see the whole world is not 18
Mmm.. throw in some croutons, cherry tomatoes, shredded cheddar, roasted sunflower seeds & pumpkin seeds, some sliced pitted green olives, then pour a bit of creamy Caesar dressing on it.. and call me when its ready :-)
and some salmonella and ecoli
this is a good idea when your lettuce is bought from supermarkets etc and its cleaned otherwise you have to clean every leaf from the dirt and bugs then chop it
Genius
Well what do you know - after all these years I've been doing it wrong. Now I am a reformed romaine lettuce chopper. Thanks!
Line the container with paper towels. It will last MUCH longer!
Do you mind if I link to this video on a blog?
For instructional purposes, sure.
I bet your blown away with the views
dumb question, but why do you have to cut it along it's spines like that?
You don't have to but it makes more pieces. If you skip that part the pieces will be huge
How long can you keep your thumb in the fridge? Cos the way you chop mate, you are going to lose it.
haha especially on the first cut!
ha haha nice 1
Years later and I still have both thumbs 😉
Chop? more like saw.
Cut the root end off...cut in 2" slices then cross cut.. done
Best trick to not cutting your hand is to keep your hand away from the knife.
What?! You must be kidding 🤣🤣🤣
يا بنات انتوا هون؟؟
I'm the 1000th like just saying
Cut the top off and cut into smaller pieces
Come on my garden, I am a lettuce knife
instruction not clear, beak got stuck in lettuce.
this guy: i got some romaine lettuce
E:coli: hold my beer its free real estate
Shame to chop up romaine lettuce. Its long crisp can fill it up with load,s of yummy stuff ,😊😀
Don't waste that end piece! That's the crunchiest juiciest part of the whole damn thing!
Yuck, too crunchy. I throw that part in my backyard for the fawns and rabbits.
Oh... I didn't mean that real end piece, end piece... I don't like that either. I meant shave a little off the end piece, no man uses that
@@fluorcyl6112 That white stuff is too crunchy. The greener the lettuce, the better. To each his own though.
Oh yeah I like the crunchy part. As long as you don't overcook it.
@@fluorcyl6112 Wait what? "Cook it"?? Reminds me of this Gordon Ramsay clip: ua-cam.com/video/KDjBEY_3qCI/v-deo.html
thank you! teach a man to fish

I _really really_ wish you had told us not to cut all the way through in the beginning… 😑
I don't trust the pre-made bagged salads. Making salad from scratch tastes better anyway.
Use a plastic salad knife or it'll turn brown too soon.
I did not know this, thank you.
who said anything about a commercial kitchen bro?
signed, a youtube user - a real youtube user
You didn't even wash it!?!? Do you not realize how many insects get stuck on the inside of the lettuce head?
JB Braendel He said to rinse it after you cut it, then dry it off well before storing.
+Zebram Zee lol Got 'em!
+Vee C Pay attention to what I wrote - I said "Do you not realize how many insects get stuck on the INSIDE of the lettuce head?"
Key word, again, being inside. You actually need to rip off the individual leaves and wash them. Pull open any of those leaves and you can find dead bugs trapped inside
moths and silverfish looking things mostly in my experience. nothing like chopping a head of romaine only to discover approximately 1000 bits of moth fluff distributed within
How to saw Romaine lettuce...;) Good video otherwise
Gross! You don't wash the lettuce? I found bugs, dirt, and a fly in between. Enjoy chopped insects!
always use a plastic knife for lettuce.
Hmmm...why is that?
Why?
Yes why???????
thank you!
