  • Tired of spending money on bagged salad only to toss half of it away because it goes bad so fast? Watch this to learn how to chop your own romaine lettuce. It lasts longer and is cheaper than the pre-washed, chopped and bagged version.

I didn’t know that trick about cutting the spines. I’ll try that today. One tip I’d like to share that makes my lettuce stay fresh longer is leaving a damp paper towel on top of it in the storage container while it’s in the fridge. I find that it does not get brown as fast or that weird pink stuff on the spines.

Thanks, I always wind up with it kind of messy looking so this helps with presentation. I keep my greens in those Green Bags that you can buy in the produce section or at a health food co op. They really do keep the greens and produce longer. I usually put a paper towel in with them and change it every couple of days when I make a salad.

I once bought a bag of 6 organic Romaine lettuce hearts from Whole Foods Market. I just tore apart each leaf, washed every single leaf, and set the leaves aside. The white part was the best part, because that's where all the water was. The green leafy part didn't seem to have much water. If I were you, I would keep the white part and eat it. If you don't eat it, then feed it to your pet rabbit or something, because the white part, in my opinion, is the best part.
