if you play osu theyre not bad tbh. They give a little extra rebound and noticeably shortens the travel distance of the keystrokes. (this could be good or bad just depends on preference) if you have a 65%+ keyboard you could use the o-rings on the arrow keys and nothing else
No worries I have o-rings and at first I hated them! I decided to get rid of them but it was late and went sleep, I completely forget about them for 6 months! And yesterday I was modding my keyboard and when pulling off the keycaps I remember I've forget to get rid the o-rings, I try with and without and now I actually like the feeling they give better 🤷😅. Just give them a (long?) try 😉 (Sorry for my English I'm French)
I really like the O-ring mod. It makes my keyboard quieter and I have cherry-red switches. I want to be able to play at night without everyone hearing.
same, at least for playing i really like them, also for the faster bottom out, imo you get the advanteges of membrane like softer bottom out and quieter tapping while still retaining the advantages of a mechanical switch such as the higher actuation point
They're mostly designed for the change of sound, and are heavily preference, I use them to remove the clack from my blues so I mostly hear the switch actuation. Besides it's not quite like going back to membrane, they're still mechanical switches with mechanical switch actuation, they just have some rubber inbetween the cap and the switch. They feel poopy at first but they're fine to use, I don't always bother with them but sound is an issue, they remove some of the most obnoxious part of the sound for the people around me, and leave enough of what I care to keep. Of course, if you can't play osu! at night, you're still not gonna be able to play osu! at night so, you have to decide if they're worth it for you.
@@FLMKane They also do that. But their main function is to reduce the sound when you bottom out your keys. Which...it does help a ton. I wont even use a mechanical keyboard without them because of how annoying it is to hear that plastic clack every time i push down. I want to be able to hear the tv and stuff around me when im typing. Not be overwhelmed with clacking from a keyboard im typing on. This video, is an opinion piece. Dont take it as gospel fact. Its just a subjective opinion he's pushing as fact.
Just because a board uses rubber elements in it or part of the switch has rubber, resulting in a mushy bottom out doesn't mean it is a membrane board. The same goes for the Niz board you mentioned being "membrane" when it's really not, it just uses rubber domes as a method of generating tactility over a PCB
I think this video just showed how much of modding is just preference. The typing clip meant to show how bad they sounded actually sounded really nice to me. That being said, I generally like a soft, squishy linear build.
When orings do suck when you put them on switches or keycaps, they are actually great when use for the screws on the pcb or tray standoffs. It makes the keyboard sound and feel alot nicer.
Why I use O-rings - I'm playing osu!taiko. I need linear switching characteristics, short travel distance, durability. I don't care about sound. I use two o-rings for one keycap which reduce travel distance. It also causes little rebound which helps the wrists make better movement. I didn't find any membrane keyboard that offers this. Maybe there exists some, but mechanical keyboards have better described characteristics.
Not so much as they suck but they're commonly used for the wrong use-case. I use them on my lubed gateron clears and the reduced travel makes them feel even lighter, its nuts. I use that keeb primarily for typing out paragraphs upon paragraphs of stuff as well as some light coding here and there. Its my favorite keeb in my collection to date. Have yet to find a keeb that can offer me something like that. For other purposes, though, that fake Holy Panda (lubed and filmed) has replaced my Zelios keeb.
O rings can be good, depends on the material and the keycap, and how you type of course. Using for "faster actuation" is definitely wrong, o rings are used to prevent bottom out and using it with mechanical keys still better than membrane's wobble. O rings also get bad reputation because it feels inconsistent. This is because most key caps are OEM/Cherry or maybe SA profile, which is shaped differently Random opinion here don't mind me
will it sound quieter if i use O-rings on my cherry profile keycaps but with north-facing layout? i wanted to use o-rings to remove "keycap interference"
@@ARCHONFella just my opinion but I don't think it matters. O ring doesn't extend the stem, so I doubt it will help with interference, and regarding cherry profile and quietness, refer my original comment for details
I agree mostly, but almost 10 years ago when I got into this hobby and the amount of mods and materials is nowhere what it is now, the o-ring mod was as popular as todays tape or force break mods. If you had a specific need on a keyboard this could actually fix it (reduced travel distance, more quiet bottom out keystrokes, etc) the key for a "good" o-ring mod is finding the right size o-ring and the right hardness. I got some that came with a switch sample pack recently and they were all really gummy and soft. but when I did this mod like 10 years ago, we used car parts and had a nice firmness to it, just enough to help with the issues but not so soft as to recreate a membrane keyboard feel. I think my Cherry MX Blues with o-rings was about one of the fastest typing keyboards I ever had, and I wanted to hear the switches but nto the loud key stroke bottoming out.
Honestly, I never actually looked at O-rings that way Tho I wouldn't really say that it feels like Membrane? At least in my experience, it kinda does reduce the vibrations but not really enough to make much of a difference imo

Unless you have a top tier switch/board, keyboards do sound better with o-rings (they basically mute the bad sound). Also, the o-ring cushion the bottom out, not simulate a "rubber dome". Rubber domes have initial resistance and then almost nothing... it's a really heavy tactile experience. Like having a weird tactile switch. Completely agree. Thought they were needed for a silent board, but when I took them off it felt so much better! Just as quiet without, but a little deeper which is nicer to me.
After buying a Womier K98 as my first official mechanical 6 months ago, I did o rings as a newbie/easy/first mod I noticed playing rust my pinky has always been sore AF from the shift key (evading death with a bow.) I just took out all the o rings from 6 months ago and idk why I ever thought it was a better step, everything feels so much more comfortable. Hello Squashy boy. I have been a big fan for years. Although your channel is a bit lackluster once a year, your videos still strike me emotionally. Thank you for saving me.
I had accidentally x out of my browser so I went to skip forward and landed on 1:01 ...I am now deaf in one ear and will be going to therapy for earrape
Don't know what kind of buggy o rings you bought, but mine don't affact my keeb in any other way than sound 🤔
It’s literally rubber, you can feel a immediate difference if you have nice board that is set up right. Like Lubed, nice case, decent keycaps, ext... and you can feel it even more if you have a Clicky Box switch like Boxed Jades
It will make a difference if you compare them side to side, whether it’s positive or negative is just preference
my friend puts an oring over the membrane on his rubber dome thinking it will sound better
O ring? more like BORING
The ligjtning gets me all the time even after watching this a lot.
The first time I used O rings I had to get my other keyboard and type on it. The other one felt normal and the o rings were... Disgusting, don't use them, follow this guy's advice, please don't waste your money
i saw a guy use o rings on only his screws for his brass plate and it was perfection
it's a tofu65 video somewhere on youtube
Lack of space in your pockets...
*pulls out a 60% mechanical keyboard*
