As an eagles fan, I will always say this. I don’t believe the NFL “caught up” to chips offense, chip just destroyed the perfect offense for his system. His offense was built off speed and uptempo, and Djax, maclin and mccoy were PERFECT for his system. And what does he do? Release, trade and let them all walk. He tried turning a north and south runner like Murray into an east to west RB. Well, you had the best east to west RB and traded him for a LB coming off an ACL tear. I don’t think he’d win a Super Bowl or anything, but I believe chips ego didn’t want to win with Andy reids players, he wanted to prove his system works with any an every player, and that was his biggest failure.
Not sure you're aware of it but you hit upon something there. Pretty much _ALL_ NFL coaches are more keen to impose Their Way regardless of the talent they have. Reid is So Lucky to have had players willing to adjust to it like Alex Smith. But he also lost tons of games by refusing to adjust to the talents he had. I remember watching an Eagles game where they Did Seem to be flying. McNabb had an amazing rhythm going with short to mid-range passes & runs & the other team (WAS?) was getting trampled. Then the camera panned over to Reid & he looked like he was gonna puke. Before analysis channels & better coverage existed we didn't know, but we do now. He looked sick & put a stop to the hyper-efficient offense that I'm guessing he allowed his OC to call & while they didn't lose the game, the offense stalled & it was clear he Didn't Care so long as they played His Way. Most people are very simple: either he's great or sucks, mo in-between. Well, a guy with a winning record doesn't suck, so people overlook everything wrong he does.
He was a bad coach, it’s not hard to say. He was gifted in to a poop conference with a ton of flowers to throw at high school players, then recruited players “legally”. He bought success, until he couldn’t. A certain god of mythology had nothing to do with an ass coach becoming great, then being ass when that god disappeared. Nike *cough*
My roommate was on the team when he was coaching Oregon. They RAN ALOT. ALOT ALOT. More than me Damn near and I was on the track team. Professional sports are totally different than college. Athletes don’t need to be coached like students or kids. They come in already trained already in shape strong and ready to gameplan. Kelly didn’t understand that.
Yea I remember reading something back then about how some players were complaining about how Chip Kelly ran them too much. I understand the point of conditioning but when you have pros complaining about how much the coach is doing it then you know something is wrong.
That 3 year post harbaugh pre Shanahan era was such a miserable time as a niners fan thank GOD that’s over and we went from bums to constant Super Bowl contenders
Usually when a HC from college can't make it in the NFL it's because they were great recruiters and not a great X&O's guy. It's easy to be a great head coach when you have all the best people on your team. That isn't the case in the NFL, everyone is Alabama
College Coach who became NFL coach seems to have the same problem. they treat players in NFL like they are 18-21 years old kid and they think they don't have to answer to anyone. Nah man. in NFL you have owner or an executive who own the team not an AD who just hire you. NFL players are grown man and some of them have more success than you in Pro level.
Exactly and you can’t talk to NFL players like you can talk to college kids lol…. You gotta motivate a 35-year-old man different than a 18-year-old kid.
Been a 49er fan since the early 80s. Kelly's tenure there as HC was awful. I'm also not fond of Trent Ballke as the GM, either. Interesting video and brings back some nostalgia from that era of the NFL seeing those players, hearing those names again.
Chip kelly just never knew what a good DC was. This video acts like the time of possession was like 10 mins less than everyone else. It was more like a few mins from middle of the pack. In College he made it work with plug and play guys. Didnt matter if they were 2 stars or 5 stars in college, he'd put them in and the offense would work. In the NFL you have to be more scientific with the roster. In the NFL there were grown men that might challenge the coach and he's gotta have thick skin. Im sure in college NONE of the players challenge the coach. Afterall most people call them "kids" . Just a whole different dynamic. That roster blowup is what hurt him. I mean i bet after he made the playoffs in year 1, he thought he could go even further with hand picked guys that maybe werent going to talk back and challenge him like Djax and Shady. Instead he got Murray and Bradford who seem like super quiet dudes.
49er fan here. My lord that year with Chip was just terrible. The whole Kaepernick kneeling thing/drama surrounding it and the team being just absolute dog shit was a real dark period for the Niners.
He could have succeeded if he was willing to self scout himself and integrate his concepts rather than try to convince everyone (and himself) that he invented football. I believe handing Shady away was the single greatest gaff in his demise. BDN was out there looking like an NBA PG, shady was shredding EVERYONE breaking ankles and two pro bowl WR’s had that offense humming. Better roster choices and a willingness to change speeds, not act like possessions and TOP were nonsense. Could have been different but it wasn’t in his DNA to adapt.
to be fair when he took over the eagles he had the pieces to keep being good, changed up too much though. this is crazy for me cuz oregon was my favorite team, play style, good team, and looked good while doing it, some of the best ncaa jerseys, i was hopefully to see him do well but we know how that went
Because of the talent level of his last 2 seasons. First two years 10 wind each season, two top 5 scoring offense with foles, McCoy, Jackson, Maclin, ertz & more. Next 2 years kaep,, Gabbert, Bradford, Torrey Smith was his best wr, Demarco Murray. Coaches need talent to succeed no matter how good ur scheme, system or play calling is
I don't understand the rumors about Dan Quinn wanting Chip Kelly as OC. Why would a defensive coach want to burden his own defense with an up-tempo offense like that?
as a ucla fan I really thought Chip was gonna revive the program and at least take ucla to a consistent 10 win a season program but it never panned out. His approach to recruiting and all that is unimpressive. Idk y ucla chose to extend him. So far he’s been terrible. However, I do cut him some slack as he was forced to play DTR as a true freshman.
I really wonder how things would’ve turned out for Chip in Philly had he not been made GM. Naming your head coach as GM never works and I don’t think it ever has.
Chip Kelly is one of the worst NFL quarterbacks in history. This guy literally destroyed what could have been a dynasty team to win a super bowl in Philadelphia. What a clown 🤡
There is a huge difference between NFL and college football. in NFL, HC is one of the manager in the organization unless he is HC/GM. On the contrary, HC is the authority in college. Especially when the transfer was not easy, college players have to listen to HC, sometimes have to pretend obedient to HC. So, HC could act as king in college but not in NFL. Chip Kelly might not understand the difference between coaching college and NFL.
Thought he was the smartest man in the room, got figured out after one year , and got WAY TOO MUCH power by being the gm and getting rid of the star players.
The crazy part about this is chip probably could have won a Superbowl if he kept all the good players on the team I mean seriously he replaced Nick Foles with Sam bradford? I forgot Bradford was a first-round draft pick buy knew for a fact he wasn't going to be good.

5:38 and the players did nothing but moan, whine and complain.....and now look at nfl offenses. 🤷 The nfl took all of his ideas then banished him. That's how i feel.
Better, yes. Tennessee tried making him a dropback passer. They didn't adjust to fit his skill set at all. But Mariota still wouldn't have been worth the 2nd pick, especially if Kelly traded a fuck ton of picks to move up and get him.
Can't let that Kaep stray slide. He was NOT a bad QB. I'll stand on that. We all know exactly why Chip benched him and it shows why he should never get another sniff at a head coaching job in the NFL. He's a garbage person who tried to sabotage careers. Unfortunately, he was successful with one.
Who in the hell said he was one of the greatest coaches of all time!? Why because he's coaching the NFLs hand picked team to replace the old hand picked team the patriots

chip kelly offenses consistently had the same feature stat, lowest time of possession on average per season. he put up good offensive stats his first year, but he left his defenses out to dry.
I think coaching is very different in the NFL. The “win one for the team” is less important than getting paid a lot of money and good stats. College still has some interest in honor and team spirit while the pros are more cynical.
