Great list. You will not get any pushback with me on any of those. Just some honorable mentions on my part... from list of favorites. "Music and Lyrics" (2007) "What happens in Vegas"(2008) and the classic "Romancing the Stone" (1984)
I realized years ago most Adam Sandler movies were secret Rom-Coms. For a lot of them it is one of those tricky situations like is The Terminator or Predator a horror movie and they are some other kind of comedy with Rom-Com elements.
So, I just realized that in my "ground rules" for this list, I forgot to mention that my goal was to only make the list out of films I had ON PHYSICAL MEDIA! Pretty Woman made it because I didnt realize it until I had already made the list and it is universally recognized as an obvious Rom-Com icon! BLAST FROM THE PAST is an all-time favorite for me and would have been on this list for sure if I had it on physical media...When Harry Met Sally, Crazy Stupid love and a few others I really like (Fools Rush In, As Good As It Gets, ) and maybe a few others could have also been seen if I had them and did a Top 25!!
La La Land is a good one too. I guess it's technically a musical. There must be something special about it because I rarely like Rom Com's or musicals. I wonder why it stands out to me?? 🤔
I would have There's Something About Mary to be on my list, though I only have it on a digital copy. My wife has a few of these for her collection. Shallow Hal is another for a list like this.
I'm glad you mentioned why you left out classic rom-coms and I hope you do a top 10 or top 20 for them. A few rom-coms from other comments I agree could have been on your list include When Harry Met Sally, While You Were Sleeping, and Blast From the Past.
It’s nice to see some love for Rom-Coms. Here are some of my favorites: Crazy Stupid Love | What’s Your Number ( this is one of my favorite Anna Faris movies, and I don’t hear many people talk about it) | Blast From The Past | Fools Rush In | Grosse Pointe Blank (I feel like this one gets classified more as a action comedy than a rom-com, but I think of it equally as a rom-com)
I love Crazy Stupid Love! It and Blast from the Past would 100% have been on my list if I had them on physical media!! The only reason Pretty Woman got on the list without me having a copy on physical media is because it is a universally recognized classic
Return to Me and A Good Year are both great movies that are completely underrated and should be on this list. Your list was saved by the Proposal and You’ve got Mail. Thanks for your time in creating these lists, they help me branch out a bit in what I am willing to watch.
Again a great list! I missed French Kiss 1995 (Meg Ryan) , The 40 Year Old Virgin 2005 (Steve Carell) and my all time favorite Crazy Stupid Love (Ryan Gossling)!!! These are in my top 5
Excellent list. Rom/Com is probably my favorite subgenre of comedy. My top 2 weren't on this list. High Fidelity and Serendipity. Those are my favorite Romantic Comedies. I also really enjoy Love Actually. I actually like all of those interconnected story movies, like Valentine's Day.
I have to say…..When Harry Met Sally is the GOAT. It inspired Seinfeld, it had copycats like Forget Paris and Sleepless in Seattle and you’ve Got Mail. Harry Sally is the benchmark
Im a fan of the film, it has made some other lists of mine recently but for me, personally, I wouldnt have it that high.... Billy Crystal in a rom-com never fits just right for me lol
I feel like I am going to get that reaction from a lot of people who think they arent into rom coms because I was surprised when I started making this list! LOL
A few not mentioned I consider good ones. A pair of Mathew McConaughey films, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days and Failure to Launch. Cary Grant has a career built on Rom-Coms but a couple of my favorites are That Touch of Monk with Doris Day and Bringing up Baby with Katherine Hepburn. Doc Hollywood with Michael J Fox is a movie full of heart and a great cast. Blast from the Past is one of my all time favorite movies. A little bit of raunch is 40 Days and 40 Nights. And then there is Tis Means War. Yes it is action but the whole premise is partners meeting the same woman independently and then fighting over her.
I left off classics because I feel like that is a whole different list BUT Blast from the Past should have been on here...it is one of my favorites but I was trying to stay with ones I had on physical media - though, Pretty Woman got on the list without me having it because I would have been killed if it wasnt on here lol
Another really good list, I’ve not seen many of them but I do love The Girl Next Door, Wedding Singer, Coming to America and Just Friends would probably be my top choice. Ryan Reynolds and his brother constantly fighting cracked me up and Anna Farris was just amazing in her role. I also used to have a big Amy Smart crush so I many ways it’s the perfect rom com for me 😂
thanks man! I love him and his brother fighting in Just Friends! I have an older brother that is 4 years older so I can relate lol...I figured Id take this in between Halloween and Christmas season time to do some lists of movies that a lot of us dont normally cover....it isnt doing that well though LOL
LOL No way I forget Notting Hill!!! I love that one! and thank you for the care package! Some Like it Hot is one of my favorite MM movies! I am big Marilyn fan!!!
Coming to America seen countless times along with See No Evil Hear No Evil around the same time, those take me back to the good ol days. I like Return to Me for a rom-com, thats one I can watch anytime.
Aww, your Larry Crowne.story 🙁 Im.so.sorry , but you seem really happy now.🙏❤ Love your list , im not finished yet, but if not on your list.. love While you were sleeping and the family.stone.. both holidayish, too👍
Well my definition of Rom Com has changed. Low key Sweet Home Alabama is good too. I got dragged to it by a girl I was dating at the time and end up laughing and actually enjoying it.
Solid list but some movies I would have to have on my list would be When Harry Met Sally and Love Actually. Some that are coming to mind for me as I write this...Say Anything? Is there enough comedy in there? What about Crazy Stupid Love? My Best Friend's Wedding? Moonstruck? Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist? There are so many to choose from
I'm not a fan of romantic movies, but I love Shallow Hal, 50 First Dates, and Coming to America. My favorite movie of all time is the Last Dragon. It has a love story, but the plot is more action-packed.
Great list Chase! I have most of those on bluray. My list would have included along with some of your choices, Some Kind of Wonderful (More of a romantic drama/comedy) but one of my favs When Harry Met Sally Can't Buy Me Love Just One Of the Guys Kate & Leopold 10 Things I Hate About You She's All That Made of Honor Wimbledon Valley Girl The Heavenly Kid just some of the one I have on Bluray
@@AVAPopCulture I saw "Can't Buy Me Love" when it was released in 1987. I was 16 at the time. I've always loved this one and I hate it has never got a Blu-ray release. Since Touchstone Pictures is owned by Disney, I'm holding out hope because of the Sony/Disney deal, Sony may put this out sometime but I'm not expecting it. I'll have to stick with the DVD until then. Take care brother.
@@AVAPopCulture For me, I think it's we all secretly dream of that scenario...falling in love with a celebrity. Funny as I will be watching it today as part of my Thanksgiving challenge.
For reasons which will remain my own, I’m glad you didn’t put There’s Something About Mary on your list. Iknow 10 Things I Hate About you could be considered a teen flick but it is an adaptation of Shakespeare’s Taming of The Shrew which is also a romcom and I have taught it with TOTS for many years. I have also taught She’s the Man also because it’s an adaptation of Shakespeare but is technically a teen flick. I out loud, laugh my head off whenever I watch Overboard. I am not that into the later version where the roles are reversed. The Birdcage would be on my list as hilarious with some memorable lines. Of all Time makes this a big category because you could go back to Doris Day and Rock Hudson in Pillow Talk, or Marilyn Monroe and Tony Curtis in Some Like It Hot. Speaking of Tony Curtis, I love True Lies with Arnie and Tony’s daughter Jamie Lee Curtis. I do appreciate your list too. I have to have a romcom viewing weekend soon. You’ve inspired me. 🎉🎉🎉
@sallyannchappell5671 that's why I had to try and find a line to delineate what would and and wouldn't be on here... I left off classics as I mentioned because I feel like they are a separate category...same with comedies that are "sex comedies", "teen comedies" (which is where I would have 10 things I hate about you) "coming of age", or "concept comedies" like BIG or 13 going on 30 etc etc...I tried to keep it to more traditional and contemporary rom coms...
@ if you were in my classroom I wouldn’t teach TTIHAY as a coming of age, I’d teach it as a text about love, gender and power which is what Taming is really about.
@@sallyannchappell5671 I think that is going to be much deeper than 90%+ people are going to get out of watching 10 Things I Hate About You... and I taught film studies and English lol...if I have to go into an in depth explanation here as to how/why it is included, I tend to leave them off the lists

And I had a similar experience in 2017 with Blade Runner 2049, the main character experiences something that I was going through at the time. Very special movie to me.
