yea of course he needs a small margin of profit because after all, he operates a shop, not a private collector And this highly sought-after over 200 year old masterfully crafted by legendry goldsmith golden antique would sit for a long time and take space and cost money
His reaction at the end is the British version of jumping out of his seat and ripping off his clothes screaming. Lady behind him lost it even more. A scandinavian might have raised an eyebrow AND drawn breath and it would be talked about in his family for generations.
Not many, these items are rare anyway, things are much easier to research nowadays with the internet, a quick look on your phone and you know what you've got, however consistent searching does sometimes pay off!
I know what you mean, but Crawley caps it for me. That backstory to the Crawley silver was fascinating and there is a good clip on here if you don't know about it.
Roughly 116,000 pounds in today's money, or $144,000. These were worth roughly two to three years salary for most people around 1990. Incredible. Surely, they must be worth at least $100,000 today.
"Where did you get these?" "Well, my father gave them to me about a year or 18 months before he died." "Oh. I was hoping you had bought them for 5 pounds from a rubbish dealer."
They are certainly exquisite, but I wonder whether they’d be heavy or fit in the hand easily. I would enjoy them as art sculptures. I hope his heirs held on to them. 😊
@@bullet-catcherhohoho250I think you may be incorrect. There atlre four holes visible at 0:10 on the side where you do have the option of sprinkling the salt but it does look like pinching the salt is also a possibility.
The spoons are missing. The bowl of the spoon is a scallop shell and the handle comes up to a trident. Neptune's trident. I bet worth alot more if he had the matching spoons.

Please BBC Roadshow, please show the original date this aired on television. It's fun to see what the items are worth in today's money-pounds sterling and US dollars. (American fan of the BBC for 30 years!)
This was back in the day when 40,000 would do more than just pay your electricity bill.
You could buy a house in 1991 for that much. Quite a nice one, too.
Well said
How about it…$40,000. 4 cars or a house!
It’s insane - I bought my first new car in 1994 for just under 13k
Truth
Genuine piece of art is priceless.🤨
The intrinsic value of that much gold would be worth quite a bit. I am curious what the melted down value would have been vs the intact artwork value.
Melted down... A few quid.
Theres a bit where he said "guilding"
40,000 pounds??!! Geez, they don't look that heavy!
& how about if you were selling them?
About $80,000 American back in 1991
George III ….! Did he mean George II. ?
Typical English understatement, " Good Lord, you do surprise me"
Rick from "Pawn Stars" would offer you £1000!🤣

He’d have to call in an “Expert” first.
Nice to see people so well dressed and not schlumpimg around in their pajamas in a public place.
Exactly...and not continually clicking on their phones😮
Pajamas would be an improvement for many people.
A British tradition.
After 2019 your own government distroyed America.
Nice to see someone can spell pyjamas ?

The lady is likely his wife.
How many items like this are on thrift store shelves or sold at yard sales for pennies?
I guess some education and research could potentially pay off.
I watch alot of resellers they make a huge wage as you said.

One of the greatest moments in Antiques Roadshow history, next to the Crawley Silver.

Over half a million now easily
@@JonnyFunFun1 How do you know?
These are NOT gold they are silver gilt
@@stuartwalsh4381 I somehow missed that crucial detail.
Each one?
"Where did you get these?"
"Well, my father gave them to me about a year or 18 months before he died."
"Oh. I was hoping you had bought them for 5 pounds from a rubbish dealer."
"Antique" Antiques Roadshow.
WOW. I didn't see that coming...his dad done well.
Who would have thought gold tableware in perfect condition from hundreds of years ago might be valuable.
They are silver and gilded not solid gold
Do you think if you don't brush your teeth they turn to gold too? 😂
Love the expressions of people in the background when they hear the appraisal (probably relatives).
They are certainly exquisite, but I wonder whether they’d be heavy or fit in the hand easily. I would enjoy them as art sculptures. I hope his heirs held on to them. 😊
You would not shake them, the shell part would be open and you would pinch the salt out of the top of them.

@@bullet-catcherhohoho250 thank you for the insight 😊
That's crazy. Yes keep them as family item in case future generations have a hard time.
Why can't we have reruns of the old shows
1991 was around the end of the golden era for antique dealing, especially silver. I doubt these would be worth that 40k today.
And in 1991 you could buy a good basic house in several parts of the country for £40k
Isn't the goldsmith Ian Pickford goes googly eyed over?
Indeed, in a later episode he called Storr the UK's greatest native goldsmith.
Dose anyone know his name?how to spell it correctly
You do suprise me, such a British reaction
Beautiful
85grand?
Amazing!
The Brits are so reserved!
Those are made of plastic
Great clip!
The British have really mastered the art of verbal fumfering.
Yeah...got tired of listening to the expert go on and on.
Americans expert at developing a peculiar word for it

Today they are worth at least $150,000 dollars or more depends on the pounds! I wish that came across something like that! 🙂
€100,000 today

Nice to see people using words like schlumping
Holy Dooley! Imagine how much they would be worth now!
On his drive home he was rear ended and they were all broken.

My sister had some of these, she sold them for crack! Got a £110 each!
49,000 US dollars. Wow
in 1991 money
Back then the exchange rate was basically £1=$2 so you could say it was worth US $80,000 at the time.

I wonder if even the King has salt cellars this valuable on his table.
They may have come from King George's table, originally. Slipped into a pocket, one at a time.
The king and queen has their own silver goldsmith. The quality is even higher.

The year 1991 appears in the top right briefly at the beginning.
