Ported VS Stock Intake Manifold - Tech Tips
Вставка
- Опубліковано 26 січ 2022
- Today, I go over two manifolds, one 2020 Mustang GT Manifold ported by 1320Junkie and another, just a stock 2021 F150 Manifold. While both started out life with near identical ports, you'll see how big of a difference a ported intake manifold will make for your 5.0.
Key Points
- Ported Manifold is going to allow for more air volume.
- Stock Manifold has factory defects, which are removed when Ported.
- Ported Manifolds provide a higher CFM rate.

I ported my own 18 manifold, removed all that glue that was restricting the runners, sanded it all smooth to 1000 grit. Funny thing is, I had to get a tune revision because I was actually making MORE torque than I was tuned for. Triggering a P061A code because I was exceeding the expected torque limits. After 7K RPM is just keeps pulling.
However, I have over 5+ years experience using a dremel, 10+ years with sanding and polishing, so unless you know what you're doing, just leave it up to the pros to port your manifold, because you're taking a risk on actually losing power rather than gaining it. I was careful not to over-port. I used pictures of professionally ported 18 manifolds as reference. Shop vac worked great for cleanup too.
You aren't wrong; but, if someone wants to try learning how to port, doing it on a stock manifold is a great way to start. Hell of a lot cheaper than if you screw up an expensive aftermarket intake, especially when it isn't too hard to find a used stock replacement for much less from someone who's upgraded.
By glue, do you mean weld (plastic) flash? You’re probably better off locking out the cmcv system and glueing the flaps shut. Probably getting more restriction from the flap pockets more than the small weld flash intrusion into the air flow 🤷♂️
Saw no difference in hp on dyno with ported intake in n/a. 10 cars zero difference made same hp and tq.
Thanks for the comparison info in this video. I would like to see a ported intake dyno shootout for the Gen3 5.0s. Ported 18+ vs Ported Boss vs ported GT350. Maybe throw in a ported CJ for fun. But I don't care much for the CJ one though. The point, for me, would be not to spend that much money on the intake.
Great video and information. I can't wait to put my 2018 Junkie Performance manifold on my 2015 Mustang Gt. Still gathering parts . Hurry up UPS. This Intake manifold is awesome pulls like a freight train at higher RPM.
Just purchased mines cant wait to install it
You bought some mines? What are you doing planting them around your house ?
I need help, my truck is a 98 but had a 99 pi motor installed along with my same non pi intake manifold, im looking for more power and im hearing different answers from different people, so I would like to know should I get the pi intake manifold for my pi 5.4 motor or should I stick with my non pi intake manifold
Can the ported L86 handle boost. Or is it not good to be ported if I'm going to add boost
Will this part direct fit onto a 2016 f150?
Would it be worth it to port my boss or js leave it as is?
Will installing this intake mani without a tune damage the engine? Or more so just not allow
You to fully hyaline the ported mani
Not at all, I spoke with palm beach dyno, and they told me I did not need a tune what so ever, and they don’t even make tunes for a ported intake
It'll throw a code at worst, but no way should it be a big enough difference to cause damage on a stock tune.
This literally my question bro!
I just got my first CEL on my 20’ GT and it’s coming back as a Intake Manifold Runner Valve problem, I’m taking it to the dealership tomorrow for diagnostics but I’m sure they’ll just tell me to replace the entire intake which if they do I was just planning on buying a ported one but wanted to make sure first that it didn’t require a tune immediately since I wanted to wait until I got longtubes installed to tune it.
Not needed those items done in the vid wont make any real difference
You need a tune. But you’re not gonna damage anything. You will throw codes
Would a gen3 truck intake manifold be a good upgrade for a 13 f150 5.0
The 90s explore with the 5.0 had a gt40 intake. If you find one in a junkyard.
@@pranays I heard it’s an increase of 100hp on these Coyote engines
No tune needed for a 18-23 mustang with a ported intake
Will 1320 18 mani fit 11-14 mustang ?
Yes, will bolt on with no issues. Although, you may have to get a 18+ Intake, like a Cold Air Intake, to work with the 18 Manifold's upward angle unless you can get your current intake to adjust far enough.
2020 gt.. 10r80. Want the best top end pull.. ported 18 or unported 350mani... not many comparisons on a 3rd gen. Vmp test was misleading because they only revved it to 7400... lame. And the 350 mani looked like it would have held on better past 7400. But that was also on a 2nd gen... don't care about cost. But not CJ money. Lmao
Similar thoughts on my 19 PP1 with the 10A…
I have tested both manifolds unported and bret barber ported. My unported gt350 picked up 2 mph in the 1/4 mile From the bret Barber ported 18. I just recently sent off my 350 mani to get ported (bret barber) and throttle body adapter port matched paired with a accufab 84.5 mm throttle body and gained another 2 mph. You will pick up good even unported.
Stupid question ported manifolds need a tune or factory tune good enough?
No tune needed. I had my Boss ported and runs perfect with no revisions
Its ok ,, but u need tune for best
results
@@AndrewBaker302 I've read that the Boss 302's were ported at the factory? Double ported?
@@JamesWilliams-dj2bp No, the Boss manifolds are not ported from the factory.. The heads are though
Can i pass a state ref wit a ported manifold?
that small lip and fins do have a function. I cant see those things making any real improvement. If you just have to fool with it diy thats one thing but I wouldnt pay $ for it.
The fins are there to distribute the PCV gases back into the air flow.
A whopping 5 hp gain lol
IF that.
5 free hp 😂
Every bit of ho gained is a plus. Not every mod gains you 50-200hp
Will this make me break my tranny faster ? I drive with a heavy foot everyday and wondering
Nah usually it's fine unless you can't drive your car right lol. Also you wouldn't be pushing enough power with a ported intake only to break the Trans
Heavy foot will break it..those things in the vid wont do much of anything except make you poorer
