My dog weighed 107 lbs. and had two bad knees. I started making him chicken, rice, peas and carrots with a little no sodium chicken broth, and in 8 months, he lost 25 lbs. His knees are so much better now and he jumps up on his designated couch with ease. Best thing I could have done for him.
I had a Dalmatian that had bladder stones (typical in the breed) and I made his food as well (the UD prescription food was high in sodium and some Dalmatians was suffering heart attacks), I did chicken and/or turkey, potatoes, carrots, zucchini, rice, barley, canola oil and a can of tomatoes he ate it for 11 years, I used to make a big pot of it every 5 days, I froze it to keep it fresh and because he was so active I had to add pasta to it just to maintain his weight.

I went there a few years ago and stayed at Cottonwood campground too. The long drive there from Fort Stockton is desolate and beautiful..you really feel you are in the middle of nowhere. Your still photos were breathtaking and absolutely captured the beauty of the park.
I actually loved the still photos of the park. We are so used to video now but I really enjoyed your gorgeous photos that I could pause and really appreciate. You hand picked them so they were stunning lighting and composition that you wouldn't get with video
My aunt had a beagle that had many food allergies, and she fed her a cooked meat and veggie diet. She would brown some ground turkey or chicken and when it cooled she would mix in some shredded raw veggies like broccoli, carrots, cauliflower, cabbage, and when she could, she added pumpkin or sweet potato. Her pup thrived on that diet. Good luck!

In 2015, Terlingua (TUR-lingua, not TEAR-) was the subject of a tv miniseries called 'Badlands, Texas.' Fascinating story. I have a friend who lived on the ranch for several years.

I have wanted to go to Terlingua for awhile now, and I am thrilled you got to enjoy it Carolyn. This was an excellent video all around, great photographs, great history, and you and Sadie just taking it all in. Oh bye the way, when my cat Hook reached 18 years of age I had to cook him ground turkey every couple days. I put it in small Tupperware containers that I would then freeze, and thaw out as needed. Hook was a wonderful cat, a real lap cat, and it was my pleasure to repay him for his friendship. Ya those Farmer's Dog commercials get to me too. Thanks, & Take Care Carolyn.

I'm a woman who has lived in Texas my entire life. I love it here and am proud to be a Texan and a Texas woman. I'm sure Texas doesn't give a rip what you think about it. Hate is a strong word,but I get it. I hate California and everyone associated with it. Glad you enjoyed your stay in my beautiful state! 😘

I don’t think you mentioned that Big Bend is the ONLY National park that has a mountain range completely within its borders.
Additionally the Basin is the most scenic area in BBNP, did you not go there?
Big Bend is the best kept secret in America - if you love the desert! The Museum of the Big Bend in Alpine is also very good.

I don’t feed my fur babies raw meat, I do however, cook them chicken, green beans cooked in beef broth, sweet potatoes, sometimes pumpkin, and if I’m cooking hamburger or pork chops, I usually save a little bit for them. I also give them Hills Science dog food. So they get a good balance and my vet says they are both very healthy. Love the photos you took! Just beautiful!!!

cooked chicken can even be substituted for or added to his regular meal. Most sources recommend against raw chicken, due to the risk of salmonella or bacterial infections.

So glad you were able to visit Big Bend and Terlingua. We have property in Terlingua off the Ranch Road. We built a hang over where we parked our RV for about 15 years and would stay there when we could. Beautiful nights with millions of stars, I believe it was the first place I saw the Milky Way. Ghost Town has an interesting history. If you get a chance again to visit you would love to see more and one of my favorites is driving through The Big Bend State Highway. I too would not live in Texas but it has beautiful places. Happy to watch your video...

Big Bend. My favorite place on earth. Great video.
For people traveling west on Highway 90...Del Rio is the last big town and has affordable gas. From there it only goes up.
With that said if you are headed to the Big Bend area fill up in Alpine because gasoline is expensive in Study Butte and Lajitas.

Oh Carolyn, those pictures of Big Bend were absolutely beautiful 😍 ❤. I've been there three times, and it keeps calling me back. It's the only place I've seen black bears in nature. I know there's larger NP's with higher elevation, and what may be argued more beautiful scenery, but there's just something about this NP that has grabbed my heart ❤️; maybe it's because I'm a Texan, I don't know. I love Big Bend Ranch SP also next to Lajitas and Terlingua. There is such an amazing change in scenery from the Pine Forests of the NP and beauty of the desert in the SP.
My grandparents took me to Big Bend in their RV when I was a kid. It was marvelous then and now! I go every couple of years. 😊
Carolyn, please, please, please , take a drive to Presidio…absolute BEAUTIFUL DRIVE and stop and see the hoo doos formations on the way for a nice hike!! It’s only about 50 miles from Terlingua and well worth it!! Also, try Long Draw Pizza, closed Monday and Tuesday!,

It's a ghost town.Sadie is an extremely sensitive and protective dog.Notice even the way she was sniffing the lot where you found purple glass.She was sniffing,lifting her head as if to register/ recognize that scent.Dogs get spooked easy with ghosts, supernatural things That's what makes dogs unpopular with the dangerous ones.Dogs know who or what they are, dangerous one often are very vocal saying "Get your dog away from me or don't allow dogs to be near,to socialize.110 % of the times I've traveled,camped,hiked the dog always knew.If I waited,observed her enough I could figure where or the direction she was guiding me away from.You can always find another sight to see,but you only have one life (esp.if danger has a gun,knife,is drugged out,or genetically enhanced or predisposition to be violent,deadly.Its a whole new world,not like the era I grew up in,though things did happen then too.Dogs teach,please don't be harsh on her.Its stressful for them.They need to be goobers afterwards to let off steam.Taje Care you too

My husband fed his dog Old Roy. She was 17 or 18 when she finally crossed the Rainbow Bridge. I fed mt dog Science diet and she turned her nose up when she discovered Old Roy ! She is now 14 and nobody believes she's that old.

My home base is in Texas. I’ve lived in Texas for 45 years and never been to big bend. It’s on my soon bucket list. Thanx for sharing.
The Big Bend area is a geologist’s dream come true. That plus the birds and history make the region an amazing place to visit November thru March. Was there once in early May and the temperature was 108F!
The white “billboard” panel on top of the hill was used as a passive repeater for bouncing microwave signals off of. They’ve since been replaced by today’s microwave towers with the round cone shaped things pointing in various directions.
I can’t wait to get out and see them!!❤

The cemetary at Terlingua is very interesting.They have some good restaurants there as well. We stayed at Rio Grande campground at Big Bend two years ago and loved it. Great hiking in that area!

I had a Doberman growing up. She lived to be 16 years old. Her diet was good old fashioned Gravy Train, occasional raw egg and I know for a fact a lot of veggies under the table. Dog food isn't what it was when we were growing up
Visited BB last March and the flower bloom was amazing! And like you I was so intrigued with the ghost town…and the cemetery! Let’s just say quite a change from Ohio!! ☺️

I saw your doppelgänger at Espresso Y Poco Mas in Terlingua last March when we were there. Twice. Seriously! I even asked “Carolyn?” The only thing that dissuaded me that it wasn’t you were her tattoos. Hers were different 😂. Definitely hit up the cemetery the next time. You’re going to love it.

I follow Van City Vanlife. Chrome is a Canadian UA-camr who lives full time in his van. He has a bulldog named Cruz. Cruze can only eat raw food due to a digestive issue. He eats whole fish, duck feet and all sorts of "goodies". Chrome buys it frozen at pet stores. Just a thought.

I stayed in a motel, in Marfa. I was told by the locals not to let my little boy run around outside alone, because of rattlesnakes. I was told that there was a lot of them! 😮
The Starlight is such good food and cocktails!! Did you miss the cemetery? It's really cool.There is also another rv park further north and about 15 miles off the road. I accidentally ended up there, didn't stay, but I would definitely consider it on another visit. It's called Terlingua Ranch Lodge.

Most sources state that the name Terlingua is a corruption of the Spanish tres lenguas, meaning "three tongues," either for the three forks of the creek or for the three languages spoken by the Apache, Comanche, and Shawnee Indians who lived along the creek.
I've been a raw feeder for 6 years. There's a lot to it and a general formula that you follow that mimics what they would eat in the wild as a carnivore. 80/10/5/5/ is the general plan which is 80% meat, 10% bone, 5% liver, and 5% other organs. Most people also add sardines, eggs, and kelp and that's the short list! Glad you're enjoying our state of Texas!

We feed our dogs a very small amount of raw ground beef sometimes. But you have to remember a lot of animals are given food with chemicals in it that makes them grow faster and bigger.
Carolyn! There is legislation in congress now that will change that. It was reported as bipartisan with support from both parties! Hang in there!!!
@14:40 I read Australian vet Dr. Tom Lonsdale’s Raw Meaty Bones and started raw feeding in 2008. I was in a Yahoo group that was very supportive. There are Facebook groups now. Gotta be careful with chicken because many are injected with a sodium solution (pre-brining) and that’s not good for pups. Read the labels. Chewable bones like chicken backs, necks, wings do a better job cleaning teeth than any product I’ve ever found. 👍👍
Terlingua really isn’t a ghost town. The 1960’s and 70’s made it seem so when everyone left after the Chisos mining shut down. But folks still live there. It’s small but it’s fun and home to the annual Terlingua chili cook off which has been an annual event since 1967! People come from all over the world literally. I’m born and raised in west Texas and we go there every year. So glad you’re there and showing off some of the best parts of Texas!
We discovered a few years ago after we had 2 dogs diagnosed with cancer and took them to a holistic vet that feeding a raw diet is actually good for dogs. That's what they would eat in the wild. We heard about a BARF diet, which is Bones and Raw Food diet. We started feeding our dogs Darwin's Natural Products food - the organic raw food and we saw an amazing improvements with our dogs. The regular vet couldn't believe the difference in blood work done before we started feeding the raw diet and the blood work after. She said the test results spoke for themselves. Before we were feeding The prescription diet from the regular vet and had switched to just the Science Diet but the raw diet is what made the best difference. I would highly recommend checking Darwin's Natural Products out for Sadie.

We feed our dogs Fromm out of Wisconsin. But we add green beans at ever meal. And add sweet potatoes and other goodies along with the dry kibble.
Western ghost buildings/towns that have so much history have a spiritual feeling to them. Big Bend Natl Park is awesome. Glad you were able to visit this historic area.
As far as dog food goes the raw food diet can be healthy but so much more expensive. There are recipes out there so you can make your own, but living in a RV with limited refrigeration is a game changer. Dogs guts were never meant to digest soy or corn. It is recommended to feed a single carbohydrate( rice, sweet potatoes, pumpkin) single meat kibble especially for sensitive guts and allergies. Since wild dogs ate the partially digested food from their preys intestines and stomachs they do tolerate some greens and berries on their diets as do our pet dogs. You can add some eggs and raw meat to the kibble, but the high end kibbles are complete.Just as human diets have fads so do pet food. I have many friends who feed raw meat in addition to a hard kibble and there certainly is nothing wrong with that. What a full time RVer needs certainly are different than a sticks and bricks life style. I always remember that if I can feed myself high end organic food then I should spend money for the healthiest food for my animals who are my children. I do hope you will explore the dog food options that do not have corn or soy in the first 6 ingredients if at all will . Best wishes from San Antonio, TX

Hey I’m a woman and I live in Texas in a 24 foot motorhome with my chiweenie Rosie
I have a Pitt bull/ black lab dog & I feed him cook chicken breast mixed with dry science diet food . My dog is 14 yrs old & still going healthy . I always had a lot of dogs but he is the first dog that I feed chicken breast to instead of canned food . He is the only big dog I had that has lived past 11 &12 yrs of age. I think it because I didn’t feed him processed can food.
Yes, for no processing food. Maybe no raw food right away slightly boil until she gets used to. ❤
